View Full Version : Points you play....

How many points do you play- What is the standard where you live, and where is it you live (general region is fine). Would you consider yourself a casual gamer, or a tournament gamer?

We have been playing 2250 ever since 6th edition came out, it became the tournament standard, and is played that way all over Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and New Mexico that I can tell... Our friend moved up to Seattle and they played 2000, until he showed them that the tournament standard for the biggest and best tournaments (Indy GT circuit) was 2250.

I just wondered what other people's standard points game were. The strategies employed can change dramatically at 2k, compared to 2250, and 3k.

Here in aberdeen, there is no "set" points limit we generally stick to, we play based on what each player has in an army, usually no smaller than 1500, up to 3 or 4k. But i play mainly 2k games.

1000pts are the norm for me, not sure why but I tend to enjoy these more then 2000 pts.

Strange poll options.

At my club we usually do 1.5k or 2k most commonly. Fits a 3 hour club evening fine.

I'm running a combat patrol tourney at the moment - which is 400 points.

Well here in the UK 2000pts i standard. However i went to Aus last July and they have standard pts size of 2250pts

We normally play 2000 points, but now and again, we try to establish 2500 as a new standard ("It's the new two thousand, Sigurd! The NEW TWO THOUSAND!!"). I think I prefer 2500 over 2000, because of how a lord choice often sucks up so much of the points you spend going from 1000 to 2000. 1000 to 2500 gives a slightly more natural progression in the army.

2250 is a format I have no respect for. It just seems a silly number, like some kind of symptom of the american "bigger is better" phenomenon. Why not 2500? I don't get it. Might as well play 2319 points then.

In our gaming group we play at 2250. We play very competitive and well most tournies in Denmark we know about is about 2250 points.

Anyway i think its a great pointvalue, the extra 250 points makes the slightly more tactical and still able to play on a standard table (6"x4" as far as i remember).

Our group plays a minimum of 3000 points to 5000-points per player, with usually two players per side.

In my area (NYC) 2250 seems to be the standard -- although 2 or 3 thousand point games aren't entirely uncommon.

Usually 2000pts I haven't had a chance for anything bigger in years!

We usually play 2000 or 3000, but more often it's 3000.

In my area we use 2,250 when playing 1 v 1. We do play a number of 2 v 2 at 3,000 (i.e. 1,500 per player). Sometimes we go bigger in the 2 v 2, but generally time constraints prevent this.

I'ama pretty regualr gamer, and normal sort fo level around me seems to be 2000 points or 1000. more than anything this is for time constraint, as get in 3-4 games in a night.

however i should say I don't normaly go to tournaments and only play with about 25-30 odd people, from where i live in Reading to varrious service bases around the country. so possible i don't play with enough differnt people.

2000, 2250 and 2500 with 2k being the most commen as WHFB isn't as popular as 40k over here. (Hence, smaller armies)

I like to play at 2500 in friendly games.

We used to play 1500 or 2000, but 2250 is becoming the norm (in UK)

After playing 2K since 7th edition me and my gaming group decided to try 2,250. It was ok but in the end we decided it was less satisifying as it was easier to get everything into your list. We found that it was too easy to write a powerful list and negated certain weaknesses/strengths.

For example:

The skaven player just swapped his greyseer for thanquol so you get practically free castings of plague on warpstone like 3 times a game.

The He player added 2 Repeater bolt throwers and got a few more bodies in.

I (hordes) was able to get 2 more chariots in by dropping a chosen warrior.

Ogres got another butcher (with skrag + butcher already) and another small unit of bulls.

Vampire player decided he wanted 2 black coaches (yawn)

In the end we found it too be not so satisfying.

See I've had the opposite experience.

The people we play with are usually quite friendly, and having 250 points more (or 500)usually goes onto core, or filling out the army, making a more troop based game, rather than heros +1000 points.

We do however find 3k games a bit boring, because they are just 2500 + another mage lord usually. However, 4 player 1500 points we have found to be extremely rewarding, lots of tactical ways to play as you only have heroes but loads of troops.

For WFB, the common army point size is 2,000pts per player.

Current campaign army sizes are 1,999pt, which are all gamed out with various scenarios. (see sig) ;)

As I may be spending some time in Canada, specifically Vancouver, I was wondering what the usual amount of points you play there is?

2000pts usually, anything less just doesn't seem worth it, considering the relatively high costs of worthwhile sized units in fantasy

2k usually.
Although 1,999 or 2,999 seem very interesting.

The going standard in our area had been 2250 for quite a while. This is simply because it represents the 'standard' tournament points value and everyone seems to take every game as a 'test run' for potential tournament play.

Amusingly enough it was 2150 for many years before that for exactly the same reason. The amount of 'why the extra 100pts' griping of a general 'change is bad' nature that went on for months after the tourney points were bumped was pretty funny in retrospect.

As to pick-up and fun games we really run the gamut and 3500-5000 are common choices although the smaller (2250) games make for shorter games which are easier to squeeze into a narrow window of opportunity.

In addition to my previous post as the reason we play 2250 is because that is becoming the norm, I gotta say - 1500 is what I prefer.
Purely because at that level - you dont have uber lords on dragons running amok.
I beleive that is the reason that 2250 is also the standard now, because 2k was basicly - 1500pts, plus a Lord choice.

1999 Pts is our preffered pointsvalue, gives us enough models for a 2K game, but limits characters (max 3 heroes, no lords) & rare things like stanks & monsters.

Yeah here in Toronto we play at 2k. Seems to work nicely, but I want to start trying out 2250 sometime...

4000 is our standard game with the occasional 8000.

We're usually playing armies of 2K points, but are considering going down to 1999, as lord choices (w. dragons etc.) suddenly puts a lot of focus on characters. None of us bother with tournaments, as the game is usually a warmup for a hangover the day after ; )

since i have just only recently finished my 2k army i usually play small games of 1k-1.5k
or big double ones of 3k

I'd say about 4'000pts for me. We don't get in as many games as we'd like to these days, so when we do play we try to go all out.

Lately we've been using 2200 points armies for our battles.
Sometimes we play bigger battles.

Our store/club normally plays 2,000 but has had to move to 2,250 to keep inline with the GT circuit. (we are going to Chicago and Las Vegas this year)

In the UK it tends to be

Small Games - 1500
Normal Games - 2000

40K is -

Small Games - 1000
Normal Games - 1500

Those are the tourny standards.

If im playing over 2,000 though I like to make it at least 3,000.

We've actually been playing 2,500 in all the tournaments in New Orleans for a couple of years now. I really like the point limit.

I actually enjoy being able to round out the list with whatever it is that I couldn't get in at 2,000. I'm not sure which part of the army the points normally go into for most people but mine seem to go a different place each time I make a list.
