I'm sure this has been posted before but I'm curious that with the new codex's and the sneak peaks we've had at 5th edition rules what armies will be the most enjoyable to play against.
After all that's why we play this game, to have fun.

Orks will always be great fun to play against.

For the moment orks, as its always fun to kill heaps and heaps of green guys, and they have great fluff and models. Eldar are fun to play against too (except for stones/holo field gravtanks) and CSM aswell. Generally speaking, the more heterogenous a list is, the more I enjoy playing against it (a good paintjob and/or conversion job can help too).

I voted imperial guard just because I never see them. Have maybe played them twice ever out of my ~5 years playing... That said, I hate Armored Company :)

I like to play against most armies and I really enjoy using the same list regardless of the opponent.

Imperial Guard because as a Guard player I find the most interesting games are Guard v Guard ones! :)

I voted chaos, becuse it's not a specialized list and thus a take all comers list will work fine against them.

Orks! Definetly.

I didn't expect nobody to vote for Tau, Eldar and Dark Eldar. Why aren't these armies fun to play against? Are they just frustrating to deal with of easily abused?

Surely it depends on the opposing player as opposed to the opposing army?

Well for one thing two of those just shoot the crap out of you while you can't even dent one of their units even if all of your army concentrate fire on one of their units (because of invulnerable saves, evasion and skimmer rules) and they do it all at a low cost.

For the other, it's the fact that they are allowed to max out on very powerfull and cheap guns, something newer codices tend to eliminate and the fact that they can reach close combat on the first turn with nigh invulnerable CC specialists.

Basically they can annihilate your stuff without breaking a sweat and if they think things are starting to go the other way they can start running circles around your slower stuff effectively ignoring your threats. It's like a watching a dude with a spear poke a guy in a wheelchair.

With Tau I can see their special jetpack rules as being a source of discontent for opponents. It generally irks a lot of people when Crisis Suits can jump out from behind a forest, shoot, and jump back without fear of retribution. Stealth suits tend to **** people off even more due to the spot checks.

As for Eldar, I suppose it's just the (generally unfounded) stigma of cheese.

As much as that is true, some armies are just boring as hell to play against regardless of who is controlling them, ie) Necrons

This depends largely on your personal motivations for playing the game in the first place. As someone who plays almost entirely for the tactical and competitive aspects of the game, I enjoy playing as and against Necrons very much.

But this is the opinion of someone who, while using appropriate WYSIWYG conventions, wouldn't care at all if his opponent used checkers instead of models as long as they were clearly labeled. Fluff and variety don't matter too much to me.

I voted IG. As an Ork player, some of my favorite games over the years have been horde IG vs horde Ork....its always fun to see the IG player simply mow down orks, then be mown down in CC.

I still have fun playing them, but I'll have more fun once they get some teeth back. Those lasers really have a hard time hurting the new ork codex.

ORCS, hands down. Mainly this has to do alot with the people I play with because there is a wide variety of armies I go against with them. Also most of the orc players really get into it by speakin orcy and such :P

two armies are missing daemonhunters and witchhunters. personally i dont care who i face i like to play against all armies. I dont care if the person i face is a WAAC or totally fluff oriented either so long as the person isnt obnoxious or rude.

I play Tau and even though its pretty rotten of me I have to admit I love playing against Guard.

Infantry that dies in the double figures a turn and tanks that are far to slow to be a realistic threat.

So yeah Guard get my vote.

My first choice would be Orks. Orks vs Orks, Orks vs Guard and Guard vs Guard are always the best games in my book. Although ive found this more down to the players, than the armies. It just so happens that most of my best games have been against people playing Orks or Guard.

I wonder if a persons personality has something to do with the army they play and there for, what we see as a fun game against a particular army, is in fact against a particular type of person we get on with. Just a thought.

Horde Tyranids. They have their own balance system built into their army with their poo-poo Leadership and Synapse, so any Tyranid list that tries to spam anything will meet massive failure against somebody. (Show me a Nidzilla list that "can't be beat", and I'll show you Skarbrand and Fateweaver.)

I enjoy playing against Space Marine armys. Rhino rush armies, I can pop them open with some missle pod shots, or if all else fails, my basic infantry weapons. Or pouring shot after shot into a terminator squad, and watching them come up with 2+ dice rolls, its just funny. That, and if they want to shoot you, they have to walk towards your guns to hit your infantry. You can also park your hammerheads far out of their range of their Lascannons, and pop their predators, while they try to get range on you.

I love playing against Necrons. Around here, they're not a widely played army.

I also played them for a long time, so I have alot of insight into how the army works. Its also fun to pit your army against something that has the unique ability to not die. It definitly brings the hero aspect of my army (Dark Angels) to the fore;

A band of heroes fighting against an utterly alien and implacable foe. Good times.

A close second would be infantry Guard versus Horde Orks (like there is any other way!) in a city fight. Saw a game like that once, and it was amazing. Both armies just grinding each other down in the streets. It was brutal as only a street fight can be.

Orks! It has to be Orks! No other list are as fun due the the Fluff, the diversity, and the sheer randomness of Orks (my opponet shot hit Shock Attack gun at my Assault Squad and ended up teleporting himself right next to them!! ;) ). Even when they are kicking my butt the Orks are fun to play against.

Strangely enough I like playing against Tyranids with SM armies.

It reminds me of Space Hulk

and the fight can really go either way when the genestealers land on those terminators in CC

i voted space marines because i love facing fluffy balanced marine lists that strike fast and effectively. it offers a really fast paced killy game that is great fun. on the other hand i hate versing tau, theres something about those crisis suits that just don't make sense to me..feel no pain..ridiculous!!!
the general idea in my group of friends seems to be starting xenos armies and honestly i hate versing pretty much every xenos army if they are played in a mech style.

The trend is going to be pretty predictable, I think.

The most satisfying armies to play against are those horde armies where you can kill tons of them. Even if you lose, there's a part of you that can look at your opponent's dead pile and think, "Well, at least I got mine." That is going to mean IG, Orks, and horde nids, which are coincidentally the more common votes.

The least satisfying army are those armies that have been given an overwhelming share of GW's attention and love in the form of lavish special rules that seem to really overcompensate for their T3 nature: Eldar, Dark Eldar, and Tau. Honestly, the the players who play those armies love it, but it's inherently not fun to play against indestructable transports and troops who can remain "invisible" to shooting because they can vanish in and out of LOS or just have magical powers that prevent you from shooting them even though they're advancing brainlessly through the open. It probably doesn't help that the players of those armies tend to be the ones who cannot spot about how much finesse and tactical skill it takes to play their "fragile" armies. That last part is obviously not always, I have a few opponents who are pretty cool from Tau and Dark Eldar.

Obviously both sides could change. For instance, the one that most commonly flip-flops is nids. Going from horde nids to nidzilla turns nids from a fun army to play against to being a ho-hum army - even if you burn down his MCs and win the game, there's no big dead piles and it's just a handful of models. Similarly, if the Orks find some way to base entire armis around Zagstrukk and constantly depstrike behind your lines as a win-button they'll rapidly become a frustrating army to play against. IG can instantly go from reasonably fun to bleh by playing IG's ghetto version of nidzilla: Armored Company.

I like horde vs horde armies. They are always very bloody and most of the time matched battles.

Hey, I resent that. Tau don't have many (any?) friends in GW HQ since Andy Chambers left. The only reason we're getting any attention is because of sales alone...GW hates us just as much as everyone else does.

I dunno, I can see why Tau might get complaints, but really, when it comes to WAAC gaming they aren't half as bad as some others out there. I personally don't run a cheesed-out list (only two hammerheads in 1750 points, and 5 crisis suits in the entire army), and I don't ever make silly claims about my army requiring "finesse" or "skill". Really, does any 40k army require a lot of "skill" to play? :eyebrows:

And I voted Orks. 'Ere we go!

Orks VS Orks. Me and my friend played a Mek ork vs Mek Ork list so lots of heavy weapons and I think we nearly killed as many of are own troops as the enemy did. That was fun :)

Used to love fighting orks the mentality of the ork player laughing as somthing blew up in their face or grots got skashed don't know what its like now. Guard players are great too they try so hard and every time one of your marines go down you feel you are getting the one finger salute

I voted for space marines. I just enjoy it very much when I see a 10 model squad of power armoured space marines die when Tau unleash their firepower.I HATE their 3+ armour save.Of course that means i enjoy playing against Chaos too but in my city there is only one person that plays with this army.

I believe that is exactly it. Around here in Ky. the people who play orcs have tons of......er......personnality and get into there army which makes palying them a blast whether I win or lose.

When I played them (many, many, many years ago) I was the same way and hope that my style influenced the current players somewhat. LOL, I even went as far as getting the Orc horned skull (half blue-faced) tattooed on my chest and would flaunt it win or lose and providing an excellent WAAAAAAAGGGHHHHHH!!!!!

Am i the only one who enjoys fighting tau?

I like the brave dash through cover taking casualties on the way in and then butchering them in close combat.

For me, the most satisfying games are close and edgy, with me behind for the first few turns and then gloriously winning the game with some triumphant last turns.

My favourite games, recently, have been against the Tyranids using my Ghost warrior Eldar. Nidzilla hunting with wraithcannons and declaring bladestorms against Gaunt hordes!

I have also thoroughly enjoyed playing against Tau by out-jump-shoot-jumping Crisis-Suits with Shining Spears and Warp Spiders. It's the added fun when they run out of scenery to hide behind and the sweet smell of instant death inflicted by the Exarch's Star Lance!!

i've played against both Space Marines and their Chaos chums. both have given my Tau a solid hiding but hell, even losing is fun, as long as the game is fair and enjoyable for both. i'd quite like to play against tyranids though, great to look at and , i imagine, great to blow huge holes out of...

orks i find are most fun to play against.. i see them as the comic relief of 40k.. heaps of random weaponry that works only cos they believe that it should so much that it actually does work.. and plus who doesn't like killing orks, thats fun right there!.. i mean thats one of the reasons i started 40k back in 2nd ed, i got to kill orks.. lol

best of all the massive ability to customise their vehicles and weapons that you can pretty much make them out of anything lying around the house lol so fun to build.. they're so rag-tag feral like that it almost seems like sport.. that saying, they're certainly still very dangerous..

any army is fun to play against as long as it is based on cool models or fluff, prefferably both, and all players are playing for fun.
once it is based on effectiveness or a single rules exploitation or trick and army will start to be less fun to play with or against.

the most enjoyable games are the closest ones.

i loved the khornate ideas and built a fluffy world eaters force. i retired it when i won 8 games in a row by annihilation before turn 5. each army was from a different race! it is no fun winning all the time. mind you that was 5 years ago and the rules have changed a bit since then.

i've been playing orks recently and they are so much fun to play with. the numbers of dice you get to roll just add to the fun. every ork unit is ace.

the only thing that really needs sorting is the supa lifta droppa on the big mek stompa. where is the fun in something that automatically hits?? no skill, no chance, no fun.
the tempus fugitives had a good idea. their lifta droppa had to beat the target vehicle's front armour on 3D6 in order to work. my stompa will be using these rules untill GW come up with something better.

both tau and marines are excellent opponents. didn't enjoy playing guard as much.
but as my orks have not faced any other opponents i could not possibly cast a vote

i chose eldar msotly beacause you jsut don't know what to expect when your told your opponent is Eldar. most other armies you cna gaurntee some units will be put down in heaps, Eldar I'm jsut a little less sure.

however i guess it all comes down to your opponent, they make the armies enjoyable.

I like some type of narrative to the games I play so that adds to the enjoyment. I was once involved in a Campaign with 3 Eldar players (I played Black Templars) and was worried about my ability to defeat them. Over the course of a long, gruelling Campaign I was the only unbeaten army. Most satisfying.

Orks are good fun, too. Codex Armageddon lured me into the hobby and Black Templars v Orks will always be the measure for me.

The most enojoyable battle I ever had was My Guard vs a infantry foccused Tau on a Jungle map. Shooty army vs. Shooty Army with very heavy cover makes for very fun games in my oppionion.
