View Full Version : Pake's Heresy Era Death Guard army finished.

27-05-2008, 19:17
This army has been a real love/hate project. There were times when I was sick of painting white stripes on brown undercoat,
and I would just stop painting. But the little unpainted men on my desk just kept calling to me so I just sat back on my desk and went on.

I now have enough models to come up with just about any kind of army list I wish, so there's no reason to add models anymore.
So I concider this army finished. It's time to start working on a pure Nurgle Daemon army.

SO here we go, and I apologize for the crappy pictures...

HQ: Daemon Prince, Cthulhu GUO, Lord Lothar Bubonicus & Typhus

"Assault Squad 1"

"Assault Squad 2"

27-05-2008, 20:45
Those look really good.

Typhus and the GUO are awesome as is pretty much everthing else.

The DG symbols on the rhinos are made of plastic card?

27-05-2008, 21:00
Awesome. Any chance of some close ups?

The Laughing God

Nice looking army, looks like a lot of time went into these guys.

27-05-2008, 21:45
BOLS! Awesome...

This is a seriously nice army, and one of the best representations of the Pre-Heresy Death Guard I've seen.

27-05-2008, 22:39
I remember seeing these over at deathguard.org back in the days. Looking really nice! Highly inspirational! Could we see some close-ups of Typhus and the Lord with jump-pack?

27-05-2008, 23:00
great looking army, I've seen it before on belly of lost souls and I love it!
Looking forward to see your daemons!

27-05-2008, 23:33
I love the way you did the white and making it look really scratched up on both the tanks and the marines. Definitely awesome work, and I second the call for closeups!

28-05-2008, 05:05

Squad 4

Predator w/magnetized sponsons

Vindicator (the brown stuff on the Dozer Blade is real rust)

Its always good to see this stuff, do you have anymore pics? I'd love to see that new hq model you've got there, one of those chapter master bastards. Where are the rest of the flicks? I'd love to see some more of this army since DG.org. Dope isht as always. Toodles.

Land Raider

And the whole army (without Plaguebearers) on their home field where they have won every battle but one...

And finally, my two-year-old daughter who is determined to start painting as soon as possible.
Thank god she practises on sentinels !

Thanks for looking, C & C welcome!

29-05-2008, 04:59
Geez!

Since there is a limited number of pictures I can post, the whole army can be seen @

So close-ups coming up @ B&C.

30-05-2008, 07:58
are you intending on using that ultraforge plague deamon as an unclean one by any chance?

30-05-2008, 08:04
Great army - are you still going to be working on the epidermus model?

any tutorials for the white would be really appreciated

Love that dreadnought by the way.

30-05-2008, 09:34
are you still going to be working on the epidermus model?

Yes. Epidemius has the greens ready, I just have to snap some photos.

are you intending on using that ultraforge plague deamon as an unclean one by any chance?

No daemons in this army. He'll double as a Daemon Prince in this army and in the WIP Chaos Daemon army. The Cthulhu is my beloved GUO.

Where are the rest of the flicks?

Coming soon, dear sir!

Interesting, great work. A very strange Army. (And I mean that in a good way!) Not bad at all for Heretic.

30-05-2008, 20:41
WOW I love your Death Guard! they look very, very good - I usually hate that "stripy-stripy" style, but you have made it work very well for those Death Guard.

30-05-2008, 22:16
Great looking army, Pake. Could we get a close up of Typhus? (He's a Lysander conversion right?)

30-05-2008, 22:31
I've seen the... Streaking? technique several times.
However this is the first time its REALLY impressed me.
Can you give us a quite tutorial on your technique?

The army looks bloody brilliant man, among the plethora of heresy era armies these days yours certainly stands out!
Good looking white with a dirty style to it? That'd drive me nuts!

31-05-2008, 18:11
Close-ups as asked.
I really hate posting close-ups 'cause they tend to show every mistake and lazy spot.

"Chapter Master Bastard"

Tutorial on painting the white coming soon...

Metal Fingered Villain
31-05-2008, 19:14
That chapter master is seriously dope son! The conversion is ace and the painting is perfect. Bravo, bra-vo. Where them epidemius greens at? I've got some soulgrinder greens in my Project Log. Check'em.

06-06-2008, 19:18
A quick tutorial on painting "stripey styley".

Undercoat white, then basecoat Vermin Brown. (or other brown, if You wish)

Take Vallejo Bone White or GW Bleached Bone, add water 1:3 and paint random zig zag pattern. The thinner the brush, the better the result.

Take Vallejo Off White (GW has no substitute) and paint straight lines, leaving the brown stuff showing here and there. Dillute the paint A LOT, because if the paint is too thick, the streaks will come out too strong. When the 1st layer is dry, go back and add more streaks where You see fit. Repeat this until You're happy with the result.

That's basically it. The same method works with basically any color if the goal is to achieve a rusty effect.

This was a quick tutorial, please feel free to ask if something was left unexplained.

Holy mother an Cooorrrr !! ***** .....Brilliant ,was the phrase that came in my head . To me enjoyment personified ,death guard as death guard should be .....Bo who Who !!! why did I get rid of mine .A BIG thankyou for sharing them with us .

19-06-2008, 19:10
Did I say finished?
Oh no! I had a Baneblade waiting to be painted! It seems I'm bound to paint white stripes for the rest of my miserable life...

I want this Baneblade to look like an old relic. Like it's been around forever.

This will be a slow project, so updates will be few and far between. But here's the plasticard work so far:

To be continued...

Metal Fingered Villain
19-06-2008, 19:55
What sir, did you use for those rivets? Looks a lot less time consuming then cutting individual ones from plasticard rods. Looking forward to the slow, tedious updates.

19-06-2008, 20:08
Those rivets, dear sir, are the rivets chopped off from the tank itself. ;)

de Selby
19-06-2008, 20:36
Nice army, and very original. Good use of the chaos ogryn, I love that figure. Also it looks like I am not the only person to think about combining the FW renegade torsos with marine parts; good job.

Good luck with the stripes.

Metal Fingered Villain
19-06-2008, 21:39
Those rivets, dear sir, are the rivets chopped off from the tank itself.
well crap. I guess I'll keep looking.

20-06-2008, 13:22
If You're looking for an easy way to make rivets, look no further.
This is Your weapon of choice.

A leather hole punch tool.
They cost about 7 bucks and are ideal for making rivets of different sizes.
Just attack a sheet of plasticard with it and You'll have a ton of rivets in no time. :)

20-06-2008, 14:13
Inspirational. Great army, great paint job, great conversion. Thank you.

20-06-2008, 19:18
1st update on the Baneblade.
It seems that the stripey styley looks better on large models. But I do HATE painting it on and over those rivets. And there are a few of them

Took me about 4 hours to paint the white area, so there are many, many hours of painting ahead...

Whaddaya all thinksaboudit?

Metal Fingered Villain
20-06-2008, 19:24
As usual, it looks good. The stripey effect does lend itself well to the larger models and such, I had a trouble painting my traitor tanks like that though, after a certain point all the stripes were going goofy directions and the whole thing was painted over. stoked to see how this one turns out. I'm off to gs the rest of the plague marines, big BIG update in my log soon.

Totall awesome paint job . Look forward to seeing baneblade the rest of the army is well cool

22-06-2008, 16:46
Wow im totaly likening the whole thing, yeah i like the paint jobs and also i like the way you have done typhon, just the way how ive imagined him in the book "the flight of the Eisenstein" im likeing the whole project, i cant wait to be seeing more,

24-06-2008, 18:56
Next update.

In case someone asks, the two side panels are unscratched 'cause there will be some sort of freehand painted on them. Not sure yet.

The tracks, the sponson, smoke launcher and the freehand work yet to be done, then I can attack the other half.. Or dear... :eyebrows:

24-06-2008, 19:03
That is breath taking. It looks so smooth!!
Free hand could just be brass skulls?
Then again, anything you paint would probably look marvelous.

24-06-2008, 19:08
first saw ur stuff on bell of lost souls and they were amazing, if you convert the baneblae nice enough though it could top the rest. ;)

25-06-2008, 10:52
keeping an eye on this looks great

love how you paint like thats so sweet

28-06-2008, 18:39
Another small update.

I decided to skip the freehand. And although I had some custom work done for me by an incredibly talented artist to use on the panels, I decided to skip that too. I just didn't feel like Death Guard would be the type that would draw fancy pictures on their tanks. I'll save the beautiful artwork for later. Thanks, Jayzn!

C+C welcome.

28-06-2008, 20:14
The painting is beautiful, my only gripe is the uniformity of the scratches on the hull, they are all much too straight.

28-06-2008, 20:34
Looking great, but seems odd to me that scratches look much deeper than the rusted metal on the hull. But it's still awesome, though.

29-06-2008, 02:12
i wish my death guard looked that good... :cries:

great stuff mate

29-06-2008, 04:52
seems odd to me that scratches look much deeper than the rusted metal on the hull.

If You think about it, scratches ARE deeper. A scratch can go all the way through the paint and into bare metal, and rust is only on the surface.
PLUS, it's still WIP. This is exactly why I post WIP pics; to get feedback.

But it's still awesome, though

29-06-2008, 06:30
that hull is looking spiffy, but i have to agree with MFV (can i call you that? :p). the scratches seem too straight

29-06-2008, 07:22
Now that I look at it, You fellas are right. I reckon You are talking about the horizontal scratches, right?
I'm trying to figure out a way to paint them more crooked without it looking too obvious that I've painted straight lines to look more crooked :p

Thanks for the critique.

14-07-2008, 14:09

Now I have to paint something else, or I'll go crazy with the stripes...

To be continued...

14-07-2008, 16:28
looking awesome.

14-07-2008, 19:15
yep i gonna copy that because its brilliant!!

Wow that Baneblaed looks awesome love it! ummm thats all I can say realy

14-07-2008, 19:21
Wow! This army is amazing! Your painting is brilliant!

14-07-2008, 22:30
I love the stripy white effect. I may have a go of it myself.

14-07-2008, 22:42
I must say, your stuff has always inspired me to take it to the next level. You pulled off the millenium old look very well.

By chance, what does it say on the side?

Titan Wolfe
14-07-2008, 22:49
Superb looking stuff ,this baneblande is going to look awesome

15-07-2008, 01:24
Outstanding stuff. I particularly like the weathering on the baneblade, as well as the characters. And the FW renegade heads work really well with the marine bodies.

15-07-2008, 05:25
Thanks for the comments, brothers.
At the moment, the BB is a side project, but eventually I will finish it.

By chance, what does it say on the side?

"You are my unbroken blades. You are Death Guard".
Mortarion's words to his people. :chrome:

Now that just makes it a 11 out of 10. Your my new role model.

15-07-2008, 09:44
Wow pake! Those minis sure looks sweet. But that BB.... my jaw almost snapped in two when it hit the floor. The wheatering is top notch, propoably the best BB I ever seen. The text on the side is a very nice addition. Great to see that you are still working on these babes

keep it up mate

15-07-2008, 10:35
Don't get disheartened with painting all those white stripes...the results are breathtaking! Well done!

08-08-2008, 04:49

Been fiddling around and building my new gaming table for the last few months. It was extremely therapeutic to chop bits and pieces of cardboard and glue them back on in more or less random patterns. I'm very happy with the table and terrain and in two days I'm gonna kick some puny Darn Angel ass on it. Here ar a few pics of the table & terrain.

And since the table/terrain project is finished, I have had time to slap some paint.
Here's the FW Nurgle Sorcerer who will have multiple roles in my army. Typhus/Lord/Sorcerer WIP:

More to come...

08-08-2008, 04:59
Have to say I really dig the paint job on the sorcerer. I'm ordering mine today, are you pleased with the model?

Your terrain looks really great too. I get the impression you put some effort into painting it.

Metal Fingered Villain
08-08-2008, 07:46
This model looks way better with some paint on it other than the FW studio scheme. good ****.

08-08-2008, 08:10
are you pleased with the model?

I have to say that I was surprisingly pleased with it. No awkward flashes as most FW models tend to have, parts fitted together nicely, and the quality of the cast was good. But, as all FW models, they are a pain to paint. That's why I'm painting mine bit by bit. That way I can focus on one part at a time, instead going back all over again just to see that there was something I forgot to higlight/shade....

good ****.

Sir, thank you, sir!

Deus Ruinus
12-08-2008, 14:38
you sir know how to make death guard look good! :D im wanting more!
im impressed with the conversion and paint work!

12-08-2008, 15:14
i am heresy obsessed and yours are one of the most fantastic i have ever seen they are the most true to background as opposed to other PH DG who just do white with green trim. I first saw them on BoLS and was very impressed cant wait to see the fellblade complete but as a firm believer in infantry you need more basic power armour wearing, plague carrying, boltgun wearing traitorous angels of death, sorry did i say basic. anyway, more infantry!!!

12-08-2008, 15:26
I love your marbling. I have enough trouble finding the time to paint, so it's something I'm not going to have a play with (at least not for the next few months).

Your Felblade is looking great. I like your idea with the studs! Been busy painting my own lately, it's such a lovely model.

12-08-2008, 16:30
your painting skills art awesome and winiard, the fellblade looks like it's coming along nicely.

12-08-2008, 16:45
Nice looking army, I am very impressed with the weathered white effect, top shelf work.

The R&F is a mixed bag in my opinion. I like the heads of the renegades as a sorce of we are breathing our own foul stench hjoods, but the marines just look to skinny with the human torso and marine arms and legs.

The characters and Cthulhu GUO well that is just bad@$$ modeling well done.

Fellblade is definitely giving me ideas for my traitor baneblade.

Keep up the good work.

14-08-2008, 20:24
I hate this mini.

Too much detail, places you can't reach with a brush... A typical FW model, I'd say.
But here he is, all painted. Except for the back pack. I'm not sure if I want a back pack on him.
If I want to use him as Typhus, he should have a Terminator armour, and a BP doesn't fit in that.
So the BP will have to wait...

Oh dear... Next I'll be attacking the Ultraforge Plague Demon. That should be fun...

14-08-2008, 23:18
HOW?! How have I missed this thread?

Absolutely awesome. Words can't describe. Must rest eyes. Win... Overload.

25-03-2009, 20:11
Update, didn't want to start a new topic...
I built my third DG army. I just don't know how to stop...

Oh well, here we go. If there's something I feel I need to say or point out of something, I'll point it out after the picture. And a deeper analysis after the pictures.

Three of them, One w/extra armour. I wanted that one to be more weathered than the two. Also I think the regular Dozer Blades look too big so I slapped on a piece of a Corpse Cart to represent Dozer Blade:

The Land Raider:

25-03-2009, 20:12

Some might think the weathering is over the top, but I wanted to make it look like an ancient relic. It had to be more weathered than the Rhino.
Oil leaks, soot, rust and scratches. The sponsons are scratch built.

The Termies/Deathshroud:

I'm pleased with these fellas. I fixed the Autocannon since someone pointed out that is should be a Reaper Autocannon. So chop! and a little plastic tube. I think that the red contrast color works especially well on these boys.

1st Squad:

2nd Squad:

3rd Squad (squad Pa-hill):

Nothing fancy, only a little soot/explosion marks from Plasma overheating.

25-03-2009, 20:12
Squad 4:

Close combat monster Dread Garro:

Again, I used the red as a contrast color. I was going to use white on the scarf to tie him with Mortarion but I went for red and used it as a "rank color". The PM's have no red, Termies have a little and Dread Garro has even more.

Well, folks, that's basically it.
There are still some minor detail here and there to be painted but I will paint them over a long period of time. I'll take a long pause from painting and concentrate on gaming. When my painting finger starts to itch, I'll go over and paint the detail. A little tuning and updating...

That's it for now, I think I have done quite a massive work in two months.
Now I have to rest for a few weeks and then it's time to give some tender loving care to him:

Thank you and good night!

25-03-2009, 20:30
And what, prey tell, is HIM? Amazing looking model aside, is he scratch built or did you buy that? Also, what'cha gonna use him as?

Beautiful work by the way. Saw this log quite a while ago and been hunting for it sense. I love the stripey look and have been trying to replicate it. Not as easy as it looks at first, I'll say that much.

25-03-2009, 20:37
This is him pre-primer:

I'll use him as a winged Lord w/Scythe.

25-03-2009, 20:53
Oh, you know I love this stuff Pakey boy, but you need to get monty painted i tell you^^

25-03-2009, 22:04

This log is pure awesome and im going to try out that white scheme because i think it looks really good. Plus that lord you have scuplted looks really good.

26-03-2009, 10:35
seriously the best death gaurd i have ever laid my we pepers to man they are very beautifull you deserve the rest man i carnt wait to se mortrion done like ill be keeping my eye on this.

26-03-2009, 18:29
i dont think he sculpted that new one, i believe i've seen that before, heresy miniatures?

26-03-2009, 20:11
It's Grytz Minis from Poland and I bet you saw it on CMON.

26-03-2009, 20:33
how many pts of death guard are you at now?

26-03-2009, 23:35
It's Grytz Minis from Poland and I bet you saw it on CMON.

i didn't actually, i was following a link about primarch models and now i remember grytz, cool site and very daring against the might of gw legal.

29-03-2009, 19:43
Very nice stuff Pake! Good to see Pre-Heresy/Heresy Era Death Guard getting some love.

This reminds me, damn, I need to work on my own DG. :P

29-03-2009, 22:06
Nice lord and I digg the scorcerer, nice to see one painted. Im currently cleaning up mine and getting him ready to paint.

17-05-2009, 05:31
Here he is, finished.

17-05-2009, 16:17
sssssswwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwweeeeeeeeeee :breath: eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetttttttttttttt

17-09-2009, 08:26
Here he is. Mortarion 2.0

I know the public opinion was on behalf of a grey cloak but I wanted black. Black is more "death-like" PLUS it was a great chance for me to practice painting black which I hate.

As always, comments appreciated.

16-06-2011, 11:34
very nice looking army could be so kind and share your armour reicpe?
