Items that come with special characters do not count. And you can replace "item" with rune/gift/etc. Magic item equivalents.

Mine would be Gaze of the Gods. Having your lord mutate into a horrible spawn is always funny.

I have a few favourites-
Cadaverous Curiass/rune of fortitude- Immunity to killing blow? yes please!
The humble staff of sorcery- with all of these new spam mages, it can stop things inn their tracks!
Gem of blood/other first-wound stoppers- Effectivly give you an extra wound, and can rebound things? yes please! the dwarfen 2+ ward vs first wound, and a rune of +1 wound, makes for a 5 wound, toughness 5 lord... give him a 4+ ward as well, and make him immune to killing blow? try and make him dead!

Dwarves: Rune of Fury. Every Thane/Lord has at least 1.
Vampires: Bood of Arkhan. Its in every list for a reason.
Orcs N Gobbos: Skull wand. On a savage orc great shaman w/ kickin boots its brutal.
Empire: VHS. Good old mr Horstmen. Oldest trick in the book. (or any other book)

High elves: The Trickster's Pendant. It is always deliciously evil to choose the miscast for your opponent. That way, I also have more potential to shut down a magic phase, if any of the two dice rolls comes up an 8 or a 9. Pretty good chance if you ask me.

O&G: Magic Warpaint. +2 to cast? I'll take it, my Savage Orc Great shaman likes being in CC. And since almost all the spells can be cast while your in combat, why not? ASF Savage Orc Big 'uns with re-roll to hit on a 5-6+ is plain nasty.

Dwarves: (forgot name) The Master rune that makes all attacks aimed at the Dwarf Lord S5 max. Couple this with a good armour save (1+ and/or Ward save / and/or re-roll AS) and you have a tank.

I'm going to second the tenderiser. I've yet to see a 2000pt Ogre list without it.
The hellheart I feel is a much maligned Ogre magic item. All doubles are miscasts for one turn only. The main thing I hear is "well they just don't cast for that phase."

Read that line again. Stopping the enemy casting for a whole magic phase can make or break a game. And if they do try to cast, they'll typically do it with less dice (to avoid doubles) then either they're going to miscast or be very easy to dispel. I've played many a game where that item has saved my ****.

Master rune of immolation-destroys a warmachine, and hurts any unit in combat. OK, so a lot of the time I've just incinerated some minor warmachine hunting unit, but its the principle that matters.
Elsewhere, the master rune of stromni redbeard is a wonderful boost to a dwarven battleline, and I also have a taste for the more destructive runic weaponry, to give two examples a master rune of alaric the mad and 2 runes of fury(+2 attacks, ignores armour) and a rune of might and master rune of smiting(D6 wounds/hit, double strength agaisnt T5 or greater)

Got to agree with Black Amulet, nothing better than seeing the look on the opponents face when you tell him anything you don't save he loses himself, deliciously dark elven!
You rebound when you save, not when you fail the save.

My favourite is Blades of Loec, nothing like having your "weak" elf lord putting out 6 str 5 attacks and re-rolling anything that doesn't wound :)

Fellbalde. Sometimes you just have to go with overwhelming force instead of fancy tricks.

Though I have been enjoying using Warpstone Armour and an Enchanted Shield.

But the biggest "screw you" has to be the Speculum.

03-06-2008, 23:45
Sword of Might. It's dirt cheap and not only gives you +1 strength but allows you to negate another point from your opponants armour save. It also allows you to belt those nasty Undead ethereal creatures as well. Very rarely do I go to battle without one of my heroes toting one.

Guzzlas Battle Brew and Wollopas one hit wonder. Pray for the hatred with the brew (frenzy a bonus too) and give a Night Goblin big boss on great cave squig the honour of destroying an oppossing character with no problems. Also laugh as you put big dents in those lovely steam tanks.
Except if he gets shot by anything better than a night goblin archer of course (and sometimes even then).

ah yes... that sword of might has had its place over the years...

You guys saying Hellheart do know that you have to roll on the Butcher miscast table, right? this means that it's very dangerous for your own magicians.

1) Flaming Sword of Rhuin
2) Red Fury
3) Hand of Dust

Honorable Mention: Forbidden Lore :P

I like surprise items, but those 3 still top the list. Hand of Dust is a surprise though.

Every list I make for my Druchii has the Seal of Ghrond, but more because of natural paranoia about magic than love. My favorite weapon is the Draich of Dark Power, partly because Draich is such a wonderfully odd word (with apparently endless pronouciations)!

At the end of the day though, the Black Amulet is particularly awesome just for the look on your opponent's face when he takes wounds he can do nothing about!

For me it has to be the Destroyer of Eternities. 2 S7 auto hitting attacks wth killing blow on everyone in base contact pretty much kills everythng. Champions, characters, nothing can stop t. And the best part is, it only costs 70 points, leaving you free to take a bunch of other goodies.

Me, gotta say I'm a sucker for the Blade of Leaping Gold. An extra 3 attacks for my High Elf general, swooping in on his dragon and busting heads left and right. I just love that thing.

Iīve always had a soft spot for a certain item each & every edition of warhammer:

4:th edition: Skull staff, when only rolling a single dice to dispel spells the +1 it had was 10 times as useful than +1 is now.

5:th edition: Actually had 2 favorite items back in this edition which I never left at home, Jade Amulet (2+ ward vs single wound, but it could be against any wound, not just first or last, for a mere 5 pts) & Flail of Skulls (+2S & causing double wounds for 30 pts).

6:th edition: Helm of Many Eyes, ASF used to be a lot better than it is now when each & every army has some way of either doing it themselves or negating it.

7:th edition: Right now I just love Black Periapt, I used to like it a lot back in 6:th edition as well, but invospamming makes this virtually yet another spell cast each phase for only 15 pts, itīs chea, balanced & just perfect.

I'm a pretty new beasts of chaos player and they have barely had a mention yet so i will throw in the one that stands out to me.

The Staff Of Darkoth. This thing is awesome, combine this with a march and you get 20" bestigor charges. I like to save it for the last thing in the magic phase and combine it with a power stone when the oppenent thinks I am out of power dice. It draws dispell scrolls like nothing else though.

Also in general the humble Sword Of Striking. This has already been the difference between all hits and all misses several times for my wargor. A great weapon for a hero's 50pts allowance.

For 7ed: Shaga's screaming sword: in big games it is nasty, I placed it once on a great shaman and did a challenge my opponent accept. Then I told him that my shaman had 10s10 attacks:p the look on his face was priceless.

Ahhh, the good ol days of Heroe Hammer, i remember fondly my 90 strong NG unit:
1- with 2handed weapons + bad moon banner = ASF,
2- 3 fanatics + mad cap mushrooms = 2d6 hits each,
3- Forgot name of the item, but it made the unit immune to magic
4- A banner that would double the rank bonus, forgot name
5- Crown of command = stubborn on ld 10.
6- Front rank full of characters.

Black Gem of Gnar - 50 point goling hero on a wolf taking out a 1000 point slann for the game.

Heart of Woe = BOOM, little goblin hero blowing up and doing like 2d6 dmg to its killer.

Didja miss the part where the Staff of Darkoth says "Shaman only" under it? Any characters with the mark of tzeentch become sorcerers, not shaman. Only the two unit entries "Bray Shaman" and "Great Bray Shaman" can take the staff. That said however, it IS a stupidly awesome item. Give your shaman Chaos armour for a 2+ save in H2H. (Note that you don't get the option to give a shaman a shield.)

My personal favorite though, has to be the axes of khorgor. Those things have bailed me out so many times after some bad rolling. I play pure tzeentch beasts, and although yeah, I typically get orange fire on at least one of my characters, a Tzeentch beastlord is so expensive that some built in redundancy is always handy.

You mustīve missed the FaQ that was released a few weeks after the Beasts of Chaos book, it clearly said that a Beastcharacter w. the mark of Tzeentch also counted as a shaman, so Staff of Darkoth is useable on any Tzeentch character...

I think Bloodrinker is a good one especially if the vampire is in a unit of Blood Knights, for each wound caused you can resurrect a 60pt+ model, combine it with red fury and its one unit that is hard to keep down.
