Latley I have been thinking about starting 40K and I think that I wan't to start an Imperial Guard army. I am going to have a beginners game at my local GW sometime soon and I really want to get cadian Battleforce set. Any advice that you have will be very appreciated

Wait until the new guard codex comes out, its due very soon and it would be a shame to build up an army and have to rebuild it once the new codex hits. Plus having to do so might turn you off to the system.

my advice is ask for a raise, you will need a lot of army men!

really though I don't think you need to wait for the new codex if you don't want to.. the book won't be out until next year.. It's been said marines are next, followed by space wolves around xmas time, so at the very least it's not till next winter.

If you read through just the first post in the guard rumors thread you can get an idea of what's coming. I would focus on a troop heavy platoon kind of army with some tanks for backup.. It will be easy to add to that or change a few minor things when the new codex is out. Possibly the HQ command squad and 2 platoons with 3 squads each should be a good core army to build off of.

I know some people don't like vox casters due to the fact that your platoon officer gives free LD, but IMO LD9 for 5 pts is way better than LD8 for free. Voxes also allow you to still give your men good leadership if your platoon HQ dies, or if you have to move out of the Cmd HQ radius to capture an objective or something.

Another thing I have been doing lately is adding my heavy weapons as anti-tank HQ squads instead of putting them in the platoons. You can focus fire for better results, and you can move your troops if you need to get objectives, instead of sitting your deployment zone letting the other guy get them all while you watch.

But there's so many ways to play. Just buy your men and start playing, you'll develop your own style as you go :)

I agree with Necros, the new codex isn't due for quite some time, so you can get a good mileage out of it yet.

Good idea starting with the battleforce, and I'd get an extra box of troops to flesh out the numbers a little. This will also help make use of as many of the weapon options as possible. There's plenty of ways to get the most out of the heavy weapon sprues in the battleforce, so search around for some advice on that. That should give you some freedom to try out all the different weapons available.

The best way to really get to grips with the guard is really just to experiment. Your playstyle might take some time to find. For example, I'm still fine-tuning my style after a year of playing guard (currently trying out my heavy weapons as part of dedicated squads rather than dispersed among infantry squads, which leaves the infantry more mobile). Don't worry about losing a few games, most people do when starting out with the guard. It just takes a bit of time to get used to their style is all. :)

First of all, welcome to the game. The Imperial Guard is a fun and characterful army that has huge scope for creativeness and individuality, but is difficult to play well with. The best solution, as ever, is practice. The next IG codex is expected in Q1 of 2009, so probably sometime between January and May. My advice at this point would be if you want to start collecting now, you can, but concentrate on simple, bread and butter units that we know will always be there in a future codex and will have roughly the same abilities. It takes some time to build up and paint a Guard army in any case, so starting soon would certainly give you some extra preparation time for one the new codex arrives.

The Cadian battleforce would be a very solid place to start, in terms of models. However I would strongly recommend you buy the codex first. We have 9 months till the next one, so it's hardly a waste. As we don't know which specialised armies we will be able to build under the next codex, it would probably be best to stick to basic units like infantry platoons, heavy weapon squads and tanks. The battleforce has all of these, so no worries there. You will also need to buy a command squad, because I don't think it's included in the set iirc.

For more help, look to the Tactica Imperium: Guard (http://warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=101&page=239) thread. There's always lots of Guard fanatics on there, but don't try to read the whole thing. It's size is biblical.
