View Full Version : Orc mortar carrier (fluff)

The start of the carrier to date. It is being built from a vindicator and various bits from other AFV kits and some scratch built components. The premise is to supply the Tankbustas some armoured mobility.

i love the forward gunner position, looking good.

P.s i see your new to warseer,

if you open a photobucket acount you can upload photos there and have full sized images in your post ( like this, max of 4 per post )

Thanks for the tip. I just didn't bother to upload these pics to my account. I'll put the next batch there first next time.

I built the mortar today and got a coat of primer on it. Sheeted in around the frontend and started to detail the engine. More pics in a day or two.

tankworks
28-06-2008, 04:31
I have been attacking the wheels and tracks and doing a bit on the engine. The wheels are pretty much ready to be installed (but the hull is still wet) and the tracks have been painted and washed and await trimming to size. The engine is ready for wiring and plumbing and that other lump is the base for the spigot-mortar.

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn242/tanker49_2008/wheels.jpg

tankworks
02-07-2008, 06:14
Well, after trimming the tracks to length, it turned out that a small adjustment had to be made in the position of the rear idler wheels.
I also decided to open up the top of the vehicle which required a little more redesigning. Finally got the road wheels finished and mounted and the running boards attached. Detailing the engine compartment and building a gunner to fit the front gun position next.
Trying my hand at sculpting by making some squigs, HESH and HEAT, I think. (I am reserving judgment until they are finished and paint applied!)

Holy crap my good sir, it is like watching a convert-a-car show on tv, aka Pimp My Ride... or that British show... ummm... scrap heap challenge (hooray!).

I love this thread, there's so much ... little details about it that makes the overall project so... well done.

Bravo, and keep it up.

I had to manufacture a gunner, he turned out to be a misserable little sod but I got him sorted finally.

i have to say i was a bit dubious of this when i first saw it - it just looked like a rhino stuck on top of some real-work tracks

though its shaping up really well now! its beginning lo look orky.

do you plan on covering up the rhino parts much or will it remain largely as it is now?

I managed to get the engine plumbed and exhaust in place and painted some details. Also worked on the gun position but no pics as yet. The radiator/fan housing has been added and some other parts made and paint is drying.

Synapse:
I will be adding a lot to the upperhull but I am still deciding what to do. There will be a rear blade/platform and a mesh roof of some kind. The usual orky chunks of armour will be added so hopefully it will look a lot different than it does now.

How did yoiu get that metallic colour in the last picture there, on the bit of hull at the bottom?

Awesome stuff :D

tankworks
05-07-2008, 05:50
Thankyou for the compliment. The engine started out as a 1/18 scale C type Jag engine that was very basic and all together wrong detail-wise for a car of that scale, just did not pass muster.
The lower hull is basic olive drab with a flat black and red brown wash done very haphazzardly. The interior is painted like the bit behind the exhaust pipe, light gunmetal with black and red brown washes. Most of the vehicle will probably be painted this way except for the mandatory orky red.

tankworks
05-07-2008, 05:55
I should add that parts of the hull have various amounts of light gunmetal overspray but I just add the washes to what ever colour is left, it makes no difference to the finsh.

tankworks
06-07-2008, 02:11
Not much to show today. Finished the bow gun casemate and glued in place. Found room to put ammo feed inside the casemate, thereby simplifying the work involved. Added a safety guard to the exhaust pipe ( not because I think that orks would ever consider that necessary but just because it is a cool looking detail!).

You may be right! Or it could get so heavy that it would look squashed to the rubber stops! Anyhow, the latest update. The blade is welded on for extra armour and is not functional beyond its fixed position. Today was a look at it and think day but some bit of painting was done as well. ( I may intall a big burna next to the driver, nothing like sitting next to a hundred gallons or so of some nasty, flammable liquid to focus the mind!)

Quick question, where did you get those rivets on the side panels from?

sj

tankworks
10-07-2008, 04:35
They are actually designed to be put on the back side of a piece of wood so that the barbs are pulled into the wood and the bolt can be removed and replaced without having to be able to reach the nut. You can find them at RC airplane type shops. As nuts go, I think that they are very Orky!

Today was mostly a paint day but I did get the napalm/air containers finished and the final roof design painted. Tomorrow I should be able to get the door gunner squared away and the flamer built and mounted.
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn242/tanker49_2008/DSC00321_edited.jpg
Here we have the 'crew' to date in various stages of completion. The black primed 'hammer' wielder will be painted differently and classed as a 'grenadier' rather than crew.

Snotlings are usually the lightest of the greenskins... other than that, I don't think, as with Greenskin traditions, any strict rules on what Orks and their cousins look like, eat or do...

Only an ork would swing a hammer from a moving vehicle while attached by a chain. lol. Brilliant crew.

Thankyou for your kind words. A buddy of mine was clearing out old armour kits that had been superceded by newer and better kits so I have lots of 1/35 scale parts to convert. The tracks are Tiger which fit the PzkwIV sprockets on Crusader wheels and running gear modified where needed to get the desired look. The lower hull is M3 mated to various GW parts. And you are right, it is fun to be able to let the imagination run wild.

This is one beautiful vehicle. Loving the level of detail. The worn and scratched red paint and the rusty metals. It really brings the vehicle to life. Like the big exhaust pipe from the engine shown in the rear shot. I might have done a slightly bigger one but yours is fine.

And the wire hooking up the big gun to the railing in the last shot. Is it a real metal wire or painted thread? Its such a small and perfect detail that your work seem to have in abundance! Awesome! Cant wait to see it finished.

It is actually some thread left over from a ship kit, it is pre-stained that metallic colour. I have decided to re-do the ladder. Hope to have it done today. Thankyou for the compliment, it is just fun!

I decided the ladder just did not cut it so I made another to double as a grapple. A couple of pics with the steel under-coat, all that I was able to get done today. Hope to finish painting it and to get it and the two completed figures mounted tomorrow.

This installation screws up the place where I was going to install the Nob so now I am in the middle of making a platform over the engine fans.

Very nice vehicle! Love the ramp and the platform is good. Your paintjob on the vehicle is sweet. The attention to details like the welded joints and rust is awesome. Im missing some weathering on the wheels and tracks though. They are way to clean atm. But you knew that :P And another detail Id love if you went over is the highlights on the orc skins. They have so sharp edges. Maybe blend them a little? Or a wash?

tankworks
09-08-2008, 16:02
I gave the Ork hide a bit of a satin sheen and it is not photographing well. I was trying to vary the wheels and some do look a little too clean. Hopefully it will all come together in the end.

I like it! Rocket on shoulder is classic. Would like a shot of him from behind too when you get the time. So I can see how youve hooked it up on him.

That red tape wound around the banner pole. Is it something actual that youve wound around or is it painted on? It cant be painted. It looks too real....

My plan atm is to either take one of my sons toys and convert (he has some nice little construction vehicles) or Ill get a vindicator or some such and convert into a looted truck. Not sure which yet. Have a ton of other projects too. :P

Not much today, a bit of work on the Nob. I dug through the scrap box and found some smaller chain and chained the snot to the rokkit launcha instead of the big chain to the Nob. I am not sure if it shows up in the pic but all of my snots will have a yellow striped back.

Made another Ork 'Grenadier' for the rear deck. Sort of a mini-mek with a hashed-up power-klaw and power-choppa. The mail is 'real', just my analism surfacing again (but I think that I may have knitted when I should have purled in the middle of the thing but I put it down to Orks being lousy knitters!) May add some little bits after painting (or maybe not depending on how he looks).
