Well, I decided to start a project log for my Orks and Space Marines.
First, my Big Mek:

Side shot:

My Battlewagon:

And for the Marines, my Forgeworld DA Venerable Dread (with a cool-looking standard if I do say so myself)

The Ork skin on the mek is pretty impressive if you ask me, much better than my own orky efforts. How did you achieve it if you dont mind me asking?

Arkaedin
30-06-2008, 00:52
I based him in Orkhide Shade and then progressively added different mixes of Catachan Green and Camo Green for the different shades. I also use a wet palette which makes mixing colors really easy and gives the paint a perfect consistency.

Ok, here's a Killa Kan I built:

Very nice work mate. What draws my attention especially are the blue goggles - they look very...well real. Is that using a blue wash of some description.

That's a big old wrecking ball on the back of the wagon. You might be able to actually put a hole in a Leman Russ model with that as your battlewagon passes by! ;)

Arkaedin
30-06-2008, 17:30
Ha, that's what I was shooting for with the wreckin' ball- big and killy! :D

The goggles are just based Regal Blue and I progressively added ice blue to the regal in order to blend everything nicely. Then I just put a Regal wash over it.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Everything looks great. Do you plan on finishing the big meksoon? If not, when will you begin work on the venerable dreadnought?

Arkaedin

Hopefully my Big Mek will be finished by the end of the week (I say hopefully)

The Vennie I'll probably start soon, depends on how I feel TBH. Kind of want to work on the Stompa some more though. I like big Killy things

Are you planning on leaving the dread black? 'cos if you aren't you're gonna have a hell of a lot of trouble painting the base colour of it now you've done the detail.

I like the cape on the terminator, always looks good. Remove the mould line on his left arm as it sticks out a lot.

The ork skin is lovely.

Arkaedin
03-07-2008, 20:31
Yeah, the dread is staying black (It's the color of my Deathwing- they're a successor chapter to the Dark Angels named the Keepers of the Crypt. Regular marines a bone white with left black shoulder pad and Deathwing and Ravenwing are both black)

As for the mould line- thanks for noticing, I totally missed it!

nice use of the chaos lord cape for your terminator, and the orks look cool, and i cant wait to see the big mek.

My god, the skin on that Big Mek is stunning! And for painting those burnaz that quickly, they look great!
I like the Stompa, but it looks a bit. . . plain. Glyphs would definately help it out IMHO.

The flesh and cloak on the Termie sarge look great too, and that venerable dreadnought looks REALLY detailed! Good luck with finishing all that man!

for some odd reason, When I look at your stompa I think Jurassic Park... could be because of the portapotty... could be because that thing could DESTROY a T-Rex! some great work there, especially on the "shooty" arm.

Ok, here's a commissioned piece. It's a Space Marine painted in Pre-Heresy Emperor's Children colors. There's slight battle damage too, but the pictures don't do it justice.

I really like your orks. I'm just starting to paint my orks but I have problems finding a ork flesh color I like. Could you tell me how you painted your ork flesh?

Arkaedin
18-07-2008, 18:41
Normal orks:
1) Basecoat orkhide shade
2) Thin layer of Dark Angels Green (cover all but the deepest recesses)
3) 50/50 Dark Angels Green to Goblin Green (leaving a little DA showing near the recesses)
4) Goblin Green highlight
5) Only in the most extreme places, highlight 50/50 Goblin Green to Bleached Bone
6) Thraka Green Wash

Nobz and the like:
1) basecoat Orkhide Shade
2) Thin layer of Dark Angels Green (cover all but the deepest recesses)
3) 50/50 Dark Angels Green to Catachan Green (leaving a little DA showing near the recesses)
4) THIN layer of Catachan Green (leaving a little of step 3 showing near the recesses)
5) Highlight 50/50 Catachan to Camo Green
6) Extreme Highlight of Camo Green (very thin though)
7) Thraka Green wash

Maybe I'll post a tutorial for both of these so you can see some pics for each step ;)

Ok, here is the Sepelio Infidelis. This warhound was one of very few of the Legio Accendo who escaped a massed Chaos invasion around 372.M34 (All Imperial records of this event have been exterminated for reasons only known to the High Lords of Terra, but the crew of this mighty war machine holds a date of 3045372.M34 for when their planet was evacuated. The name of the planet, however, has been lost forever.) The Sepelio Infindelis has been moved from planet to planet, aiding any Imperial force where aid is needed. Up until recently, the Sepelio Infidelis was station on Valhalla, but now it has been called to duty on the war-torn planet of Armageddon due to Imperial intelligence suggesting that Ghazghull is returning in a bold attempt to take the planet once more. . .

(if you're wondering, I'm building into a huge Apocalypse campaign that's going to be taking place in a few weeks)

Also, keep in mind that these pictures a still a bit PIP (there's still some plasticard showing through and some painting mistakes I have yet to fix) but I wanted you all to see the color scheme and whatnot (plus, it's ready for table-top games so at this point that's all I care about)

Arkaedin
26-07-2008, 22:52
Yeah, i fixed the Stompa, made more bits boltgun. thanks for the crits!

So here's my first (of two or three) Looted Wagons with Boomguns is finished (aside from the treads, still have to make those). My inspiration behind it was basically a looted vindicator with some very orky modifications. Built entirely from scratch mind you (oh, and I even accidentally made it EXACTLY the same size as a Rhino without having anything for reference. It was weird lol)

Ok, work is starting on my Pre-Heresy Blood Angel, but I don't know what weaponry I should give him?
I was thinking like a meltagun or something or maybe a flamer. Possibly a combi-flamer even? I could just settle for a bolter but that seems so dull for a son of sanguinus!

Dictator
30-07-2008, 04:38
The vindicator/wagon is awesome. I love that thing. Also, the boom gun rocks. Great modeling on it. Make you you spend lots of time on its paint job with some awesome looking flames! I think a combi-flamer is best for the preheresy blood angel. It would break up the monotony. BUt I am not sure how to model a combi-weapon Preheresy bolter. Due to the clip being in the front. Perhaps, the clip could be on the side?

Arkaedin
30-07-2008, 06:20

im liking your pre-heresy conversions, not over the top. very well done.

one thing however, youre painting much too thick. I can see 'caking' on many off the models. thin down your layers and your minis will look even better!

that said your ork skin is pretty nice.

Arkaedin
01-08-2008, 17:08
Well I use primarily washes and with my paints I use a wet palette. What model are you looking at though?

straightsilver21
01-08-2008, 18:28
well, in a general observation to all of them, but i noticed it mostly on the first emperors children marine, and again on the back of the scout.

paint just looks a bit thick and coarse in places.

what brand paints are you using, if its GW then thats the source right there. they tend to be thick, dry and coarse. which i think may be the source of what im talking about.

if you are watering down your paints then perhaps it could be the drying time in between coats, which may describe the 'streaking' effect i see on the last red marine.

but again, id like to just say that your conversion work is very good, i like all your orky things!

Arkaedin
02-08-2008, 00:00
Yeah, the scout was a re-do so it had other coats on him which would explain that. And I think for the EC I did go over some places while it was wet and definitely with the BA. It all boils down to the fact that I get very impatient. Lol.

And thanks for the compliments on my conversions!

I have a suggestion for the stompa. Instead of being all red like suggested, but rather than adding more metal which will make the red ever more extreme, why dont you just spray the thing black, and on the armor plates paint the bottom half red in teef' lines.

like so.

___________
| . . . . . .| <--- armor plate
| . . . . . . .|
| /\ . . . . ..|
| / \ . . . . .| but instead of just one make em different sizes along the bottom half
|/___\_____.|

iono just a suggestion which will make the red and metal not so "bright"

I like Azurias, I think he came out nice. And the dreadnought looks good, too.

And once you finish the bike, that model could be pretty awesome too.

Keep it up!!

I really don't like that power weapon- it will be repainted.
