Heres a few that I need motivation to finish.

This inquisitor has been sitting at this stage for over a year.

This IG platoon command only needs some decal work. I need motivation to finish the rest of the army. I'll post pics of it later.

I guess I could paint eyes on them too :(

Don't worry man, I don't paint eyes either. But, it does look good, I'd love to see more Imperial Guard!

They look very nice. The cloak on the inquistor is cool, how did you do it?

Eyes don't matter, ;) from across the table top models look awesome, and in your case they look awesome up close and far away.

I want to see more...

Thanks for the comments.

@The Laughing God: I painted him so long ago that I couldnt tell you what colors were used. I know the base coat is Valejo's English Uniform but Im not sure what the shade and highlight are. I do remember it being a very long wet blending process that was mostly trial and error (hence very long). By the way, I checked out your Tyranid army, its very cool. I've never been a big fan of dipping because most people do it to be lazy and never quite pull off a good overall look. You do it justice however, kudos to you good man. I think if I ever build a nid list I'll have to give dipping a try. How much dull cote do you have to put on them afterwords to take out the glossy?

Anyway, here's more pics.... some stuff I painted earlier in the year.

You did so a good job on those orks, subscribed!

Could you share the technique you used to make the winter greatcoat on the DKoK? Thanks in advance

Oh, and it's nice to see some more flames of war on this board

Thanks everyone, its nice to get such great feedback.

I'm very happy with the DKoK guardsman, that was my third try at a white coat and its definitely the scheme I'm sticking with. Its actually warmer in real life, the photo is a bit washed out and it obscures the blending a little. I have a full army of these guys but I'm in no hurry to finish them, I want to take it slow an make sure that everyone gets the same treatment that this guy had. Plus, I'd like to get my Cadians finished first so I can have a fully painted army to play with

Toschenko: The model was primed using Duplicolor grey sandable primer. It was base coated with GW foundation Dheneb Stone. The shadows were blended in using Valejo Grey Green. The highlight was P3 Menoth White Highlight applied only on the hard edges like the rim of the helmet, cuffs, sharp folds and edge of the coat.

I started a new project log in the Sci-Fi forums for my Cadians you can see it here...

Hmmm... so last night I posted a reply to all your great comments, I was informed that a Mod had to approve the post before it would be shown (I assume its because I'm a new user and had less than 10 posts at the time) but now, more than 12 hours later, its still not up. How long does stuff like that usually take? I guess I'll try again....

*edit*... Ok, I guess it takes about 15 minutes after I re-post.

Rabid Monkey

Sorry for the lack of updates, my computer went on the fritz and I couldnt get my pictures off of it.

So I have a few limited edition models that I'm not quite sure what to do with. I love the mini's but I'm seriously debating selling them off to fund another project. Any opinions? Maybe I'll just paint them up for fun and then sell them off.

http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/8858/admech01bf6.jpg

Also, heres an update on the space marines I've been working on for the To40K painters thread. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to post finished models in that thread until next month, so I'm giving you all a sneak preview of my chaplain. The tac squad is still WiP so I'm not shy to post them.

I still need to put decals on these guys and touch up a few fiddly bits like grenades and they will be finished. I'm quite happy with the way the bases turned out on them, it was real easy to do too. :)

http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/1498/ultramarine004qk3.jpg

I took a picture of the WiP Rhino for these guys but I've done so much work on it in the meantime that I think I'll take another shot tonight and post it instead.

C&C welcome as always.

I had to take a few pictures of some stuff I did a while back so I figured I would post them here for your enjoyment (at least I hope you enjoy them)

First off is some stands from my FoW US Airborne company. These have been painted for a while but I just finalized the bases last night so I guess their kinda new. I havent shown them here at least

http://img65.imageshack.us/img65/9085/0102bz2.jpg

Second is some of my Khador army for Warmachine. These were shown on the PP forums a long time ago but once again they are new here. The pics are a little darker than I wanted, the highlights are a bit washed out. But it was late and I was tired and in a hurry so they'll have to do.

http://img65.imageshack.us/img65/4197/0105pr8.jpg
http://img65.imageshack.us/img65/2617/0104rt1.jpg

Last is a base that I threw together real quick. I'm applying for a position at a stop motion animation studio near my house so I wanted something that would relate to the set building that I hope to do. Wish me luck...

Rabid Monkey

Yeah, it was a limited edition model that came in the space marine army deal back in third edition I think. It was quite a while back at least. You can find them on eBay from time to time but they usually go for a rediculous amount.

A small update to the SS Panzergrenadiers I started last summer. Battlefront is hosting a Market Garden painting competition this month. I'm trying to finish up my PaK 40 platoon and a Panzergrenadier squad to enter. I've finished up two of the bases for the guns but could only manage to get decent pictures of one of them. At any rate, I should have the platoon finished by the end of the week (yeah right). Please leave as much criticism as you can for this one, I still have a few weeks til the deadline so theres time to correct anything.

Hell, I've got a reaver titan thats sitting half finished in my closet and a warhound thats still in the box Forgeworld shipped it in. :( I have half a Death Korps army, an enormous Cadian army and some Ultramarines that are crying for my attention but I just keep going back to FoW.

I actually had some Kerr and King bases that I got as a prize when I won best painted for my Canadian armored cars. They're pretty nice. In the end I wanted to have something unique so I gave them to a friend for his birthday and built these for myself.

I snapped some shots tonight just before I put the finishing touches on the last two Pak 40 bases. I'm done with the guns and bases now so time to finish the crew. Two weeks left to go on that competition...

The bases on the right are sans weathering powder. They're currently on my desk and the turpentine is drying so I'll take more pictures tomorrow. It will be interesting to compare the before and after shots.

They look mighty fine, mate.

One question though: what do you use to file off the metal "base" of the crew to put them on those bases? I tried with the GW hacksaw and it worked well on a standard rifleman (a standing one, so attached only by his feet), but I was curious to know :).

I honestly hate to base the little buggers as I tend to dirty up them all when I put the filler on to build up the soil. I have some K&K bases too, but that problem arises as well, so I was thinking to file off the bases on ALL infantry figures and glue them on the finished game bases. Could it work :wtf:?

Wow, awesome guns! I do have a question...what do you use to make the guns go from that bright airbrushed picture to the finished muted result? Is it a wash of some sort?

Rabid Monkey
04-04-2010, 05:58
Light of the Emperor: I used an oil paint wash. It was about 3 parts burnt umber to 1 part mars black diluted in turpentine until it had an inky consistency. I think the airbrushed photo shows them off a bit brighter than they really were. Thats not to say the wash didnt tone them down a bit, cause it did, its just that the photo was rushed and I didnt worry too much about color correction before I posted it. They were still bright, just not quite as bright as the pictures suggests.

Toschenko: I used some clippers and an exacto knife to trim the bases off the figures. I took some crappy pictures while I was working on the panzergrenadier platoon today to kind of show off the process.

Tools: Clippers, exacto knife and pin vice.
http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/6513/wip7.jpg

Process: Clip small bits one at a time to trim it down to the feet then use an exacto knife to carfully trim the remaining tabs off the feet. Use an exacto knife for the last part, clippers might be faster but its real easy to slip and cut half the foot off. Then carefully drill up through the foot small enough to insert a staple (yes, I'm pinning them to the bases with staples) Oh, and I HIGHLY recommend doing this BEFORE you put paint on them. My PaK 40 crew were halfway finished before I cut the bases off and now I have a lot of touch up work to do on their camo. :(

A small update. The weathering is done on the last two bases so I think they're pretty much finished. I'm going to go back and repaint the wood planks on the rubble piles. Right now they match the floor boards which I've painted to look stained but I figure the wood planks in the rubble are probably be structural so they wouldnt be the same color. (thats a logical way of saying I'm not happy with the way they turned out) I also have a few more things to do on the guns, I'm not quite happy with the way the candy canes look so I'm going to shade them with a darker red and an off white to give them a little more depth. I also forgot to highlight the paint chips so I need to go back and do that.

If any of you are stupid enough to paint six stage skin tone on a 15mm miniature you should get yourself a Windsor Newton Series 7 (http://www.dickblick.com/products/winsor-and-newton-series-7-kolinsky-sable-pointed-round/) paintbrush. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up. Its so choice.

On the other hand, whats the point of going through all that trouble if your camera just washes out most of the color? Oh well, I guess I should be happy I can get pictures like this from my telephone.

Dont hold back on the criticism now, only a week and a half to go. I'm starting to doubt my ability to get the infantry platoon finished in time. I'll see about getting some better close-ups of these so you can tear them apart better.

Well, I'm kinda maybe sorta almost finished with these. The painting is done but I might try to put some camo netting over one or two of the gun barrels. Let me know what you think. The contest is due in one week, time to get the infantry platoon done.

I don't know, I wouldn't add nettings, leaving them as they are now - they are already stunning :D

Tha candy poles looks much better now that they are a little weathered. Have you fixed the pigments the way I suggested you?

Can't wait to see the infantry platoon based and ready to go.

I havent had a chance to yet. I'm not sure if I can find Humbrol spray locally. I'll probably wait until after the contest anyhow just in case something bad happens. Screwing them up at this point is also my biggest fear with putting some nets on them.

You could also spray vallejo (or another brand ) matt varnish by airbrush - I haven't tried yet but since my humbrol spray can is almost empty I want to make an attempt; the can is more nifty because I don't have to set up all the needed stuff (properly thinned paint, compressor, spray booth) but every time I spray finished models with a bit of concern - I trust a lot more my trustworthy and controllable airbrush.

So you'll have just to wait and I'll be your experimental cavy :p

I know. I have so much pent up guilt right now cause my guard have been neglected. I've only played one game with their new codex.... ONE GAME!!! It's been out for a year! I could probably sit down and hammer out a fully painted 2000pt force in a month or two but I'm just not motivated for 40k right now. I've also decided that this year I will only be painting for the sake of painting. Nothing I do will be forced, if I feel like painting it I'm going to regardless of what I'm playing at the time. I've spent so many years telling myself I need to get this or that finished that I almost forgot what it's like to spend more than a week on a single figure (or small group of figures as the case may be).

I'll get back to them eventually.

Thanks for all the nice words everyone.

Toschenko: I eagerly await your experiment.

Well, the competition ends today. Its going to be a hard one to judge, there are some amazing pieces entered. If you get a chance, check out the other entries, they're definitely worth looking at. http://www.flamesofwar.com/Default.aspx?tabid=126&aff=10&aft=511634&afv=topic I posted my pictures last night, I hope they do the trick. Wish me luck!

I finished up part of my panzergrenadier platoon. I didnt have time for all seven stands so I submited it to the competition as a scout platoon.

You know what? I think they're still missing something... infantry is great, but bases are a little too uniform, I'd add a bit of light green glazes here and there over the paving to add some "moss" spot for example - to me they look a bit plain (but with some very cool details added like the paper on one of them).

Just my two cents,

Toschenko

The winners of the painting competition were anounced today, sadly it was not to be.

http://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=1908

There were some amazing entries in this competition, I knew it would be a tough one.

Toschenko: You're right about the infantry bases, I rushed them a little bit. I think I skipped two washes that I did on the guns cobblestone that added some variety (you cant see it anyway because its covered by a gun). I'll try your suggestion, I wouldnt have thought of using green, could be interesting.

I'm taking a break from FoW for a little while. I busted out space hulk for a game the other day and ended up painting the dead terminator objective. Its not finished yet so I'll wait to post it.

Nice cats, and some really good weathering on them. The only critic I would make is that they lack some edge higlight to give them the definition they're missing at the moment - I guess this would take them a step further in the way of coolness (and they're already high), in fact some evident extreme highlight is much needed in such a small scale.

Just my thought,

Toschenko

Awesome everything. Those tanks look great. I love airbrushed FoW tanks. It really tempts me to get into the game. I love WWII history and how armies look like lined up together. The level of detail that you achieve on your infantry models amazes me. Bases are pretty cool too. Keep it up, and continue working on those buildings.
