View Full Version : New GW website, love it? hate it?

I"m curious what you all think of the new layout for the GW website. Personally, I think it's a web designer's nightmare and it's hideously grotesque. I can't stand it and how it's formatted.

What are your takes?

Everything is too catagorized and there's nothing but selling articles. The few that deal with aspects of play that don't involve you spending a horde of money are short, poorly thought out and in most cases downright useless.

And don't even get me started on the complete lack of any updates. Would it kill them to get one guy to write a weekly column?

I voted that I like it. That is with the presumption that it will start to run better in the future. Sometimes it is unbearably slow, which didn't seem to be a problem with the old version.

havesome,

I was more referring to the layout more than load/run times.

By the way, this only pertains to the US GW website.

I hate it.

I'm getting used to it, but it is a mess from the way the old website was. Also a lot of the handy articles that I used to reference for modeling tips and painting techniques are gone. I will admit that it is a bit more organized and user friendly to someone new to the site, but it feels like it's a website that is just pushing products and sales, where the old website had lore, stories, and cool artwork.

There are no more "fluff" articles (at least none that I can find) and the extras that pertained to the various armies are gone.

I'm glad someone else out there has distaste for the new US site. ;)

I love it. Being able to zoom in on the pictures is awesome.
I also find the format much more intuitive.
Less scrolling is more ergonomic, or so goes current design theory.

I like it, I like also how you can get the stats for each model as well. I think it's nicely put together.

Its a fantastic improvement over the old site. Technically superior, graphical interface is much easier to understand for non techs and the ajax systems they have introduced (for stats and pop-up images) are great. Well done GW, and I bet it cost a shed-ton of cash too....

surprised it is not up for the rest of the world though!

1.) It blocks off all warseer links for me, I only get the front page
2.) The programming makes the website slow and wobbling, major drawback in functionality.
3.) Less content in the hobby area -> bad. Let's pray that we don't lose the French conversion articles soon
4.) Weird navigation, that puts single CoD kits on the same level as whole races.
5.) "40k books" lists ... Codices and rulebooks, not what you would expect: Black Library.
6.) Let's not talk about the 40k bitz range

It's horribly, horribly laggy.

QFT

I spend more time at the UK store now than I ever did in the past. I enjoyed the old site because if I wanted fluff/hobby info I went and got it, if I wanted to buy something I went to the store. Now I have to search the store to get to the hobby articles.

I do like the fact that the stats are listed on the store though.

ps. Yes I know you can go to the hobby articles directly, but they are listed in no order, just thrown up there like a crap.

it this day and age the delays between loading pages are unacceptable and I find it very difficult to get the information I want, unless im buying stuff :\

The stupid frontpage selection screen thing that happens all the time basically means I don't go to the GW website anymore.

I loathe it - every time I try to follow a link, I'm instantly redirected to the frontspage, it's slow, full of unresponsive scripts, searching for an article (eg - Apocalypse) simply shows me tonnes of products, the content is negligible. I really, really can't stand it - it'll be a sad day when the UK site is pulled for this.

QFT, couldn't say it better.

My biggest problem with the page is the incredible lag rate it has. It is just not acceptable to wait for half a minute to get something loaded, including error pop-ups. It may everything be nice and fancy, but if I can access it only with lots of problems, I simply don't bother at all.

It's terrible - they've basically done what they did to White Dwarf, to the website. All people's links to content are broken, it's damn near impossible to find the good content they did have, and the integration of Specialist Games is sloppy. Not to mention the delays and the fact the whole thing feels like an online store with a few attached articles. Makes you wonder if they consulted anyone outside the company before they went ahead with this train wreck of a redesign. still, they might improve it over time.

yeah I hate it I cant find anything that was there before even with a ridiculous comp and really fast internet speeds it still times out/lags when scrolling down the pages etc. It's seems so based on the online store it sucks

I only hate it because all of the Black Gobbo articles are gone. Perhaps if there was a general "Hobby" section where all of the articles were in pdf form it would redeem the site.

I spent an hour or so looking around the new US site, and I'm extremely glad that the UK site hasn't changed to mirror it. Yet, at least.

yeah the US is by FAR worse then teh UK at this point

I both like and dislike it. Visually it is an improvement over the old one, and the layout is appealing but the merging of the online store with all the general information and hobby content was a poor decision. The two should be kept separate for ease of navigation.
The loss of all the Black Gobbo material is tragic. I used to love the wealth of great hobby articles on the US site, the UK site always seemed sloppy and lacking by comparison.
What clowns consulted on this decision and design?

TheDarkDuke

Pros:
Layout is visually appealing.
Speed is faster then it use to be.
Easier to "shop".
Pop up/zoom in is great at actually seeing what models look like.

Cons:
No linkage to anything but front page.
Removal of hobby articles. (Hopefully its simple reformatting going on).

All in all the US site is still a work in progress, that has a huge upside over what it was before. People do not like change, so it will bug a fair few people for awhile. My real concern is that of my home country site (Canada) the news page was great and informed me of tons of events going on without having to make long distance calls, it has not been working since roughly the Ork releases/Daemon sneak peaks.

I cant vote in the pol..

While graphically it is superior, the navigation and speed make it subpar.

It has, hasn't it? I only ever get the new site these days, have done for a couple of months now. How do you get on the the old UK site?

The new one's awful - It barely loads, and when it does it redirects you to the homepage making it impossible to follow links.

15-07-2008, 15:42
It is driving me bonkers following links to things and getting redirected to the front page. Things also seem to be generally difficult to find from there.

Hopefully some things will get better over time (and we'll learn where stuff is) but at the moment I'm hoping that at some unspecified future point it will be as easy to use as the old version, which is not saying much.

I wouldn't be so annoyed if the site wasn't so damn slow. Also the lack of hobby material is irritating, especially when I can't find articles that I need. If I want to look at hobby material, I usually just go on the UK site because I don't feel like dealing with the US one.

Phunting
15-07-2008, 20:36
I'd not really checked it out before.

My God, they actually have proper pictures of the models instead of tiny thumbnails!

A tad too slow though. But overall an improvement.

I think it's crap. It's slow and also redirects me to the front page. It's difficult to find anything and the layout of some of it is quite confusing.

The worst thing is it is pretty much an online store. There's no real hobby stuff and everything is aimed at selling stuff. I know their goal is to make money, but I'm personally more likely to spend if advertising is not shoved down my throat.

Thye worst thing about it is that they seem to have effectively shed any pretence they had that the website was aimed at gamers/modellers - as far as I can tell, the new website is an online store with occasional seasoning. The old army homepages used to be about background, fluff and modelling articles. Now it's a list of 'featured products' with a couple of articles hidden away. Not impressed at all.

I have been on the site once ever since they have changed it. I can't stand it, in my opinion it is ugly, slow, and has no content. I can only find the store, and I can Barely navigate that. This is a poor call on Games Workshop's part, and I hope they change it back.

My guess is that GW made a big mistake and bought all this "web 2.0" crap the IT-marketing people stuffed into their throats. Making a website that only works with javascript-enabled browsers is a strict no-no in my world. (I make websites for small businesses for a living, so I have some intel to back my opinion up on this)

The load and rendering times of the pages I tried are just unacceptable, and I bet it would not take much DDOS to bring their servers down with so bandwidth-heavy pages. The only way it could possibly be any worse would be if they had made a 100% flash site out of it :cheese:

Here's hoping the UK site will never adopt the 2.0 style

I think the new site is horrible…HORRIBLE. The design is ok but then again I get the feeling that everything is squeezed in a small frame so that every time you want to see something new you have to load a new page and even then…there is nothing pertinent found on these pages to begin with. IMO, the previous site was much better as it let you scroll down more not the mention quicker loading times.

Also, as many have mentioned, we lost blackgobbo along with the rest of the wealth of information about the hobby that was there in the previous site. That is really tragic as I used to regularly visit the US site (it was waayyyy better than the UK’s) and now I find myself not even bothering to take a look. It just looks like an online store more than anything else with no new hobby information other than new releases. All I can find are prices for this and that and a few crappy articles discussing how foundation paints work and why you should buy them, etc…

All in all, I think it was an improvement in terms of how it looks but a total miss in terms of user-friendliness and utility. That’s two thumbs down from me!

I went with meh. It's different, and that's fine. Doesn't really affect me though, as I don't spend all that much tiem on the GW website anyways.
