View Full Version : BDJV revisits Warzone

Time for some sci-fi diversity.

One of my Marine Corps buddies just retired and is moving into the area. Very cool!

When he used to come home on leave we used to play a ton of Warzone. He's said that he'd like to start playing some ultra small warzone skirmishes. You know the type of game; a very small elite force taking on a horde of Baddies! They call them Doom trooper teams in Warzone; they are small super elite probably not gonna make it out alive squads.

So I need to touch-up, refresh and probably repaint some of them. So here we are, I think we should start with some before pics.

Up first the Baddies for the dark legion, these were all painted in the mid 90's and need work.

Who dosen't love zombies! Here's a small squad of Undead Legionnaires.

Here we have a squad of Necromutants. These guys are tough they mutated captured soldiers.

The is a pair of Praetorian Stalkers, they are meant to hunt down an kill the Doom troopers.

How about a little fire support, this Razide fits the bill nicely. He needs the most work out of all of these guys. I see a red glaze and some better highlighting in his future. (especially because none of the current highlights show up) :o

Here is the leader of this motley crew a Nepherite an apostle if Algeroth.

Everything will be rebased with the big guys going on 40mm rounds.

Here's a WIP of my first newly painted minis. She will be my first Doomtrooper!

I'm really pleased with how nice she's turning out.

For those who don't know the Mutant Chronicles has beat 40K to the big screen. Mutant Chronicles teaser (http://www.thomasjane.com/mutantChronicles/)

While it may not be 100 percent faithful to the background (what movie ever survives contact with Hollywood) It looks to be action packed.

Those zombies are awesome! I love the look on the far right ones face, its pricelss.

Im gonna have to look into warzone.. shame on you for getting me hooked to yet another wargame.

Subscribed! Warzone had some cool minis back in the days and the background material was really great. I'm especially interested in seeing how that Razide turns out.

Thanks for the comments, it helps keep me motivated!

I've been busy diggin' out all of my Warzone stuff; although I still haven't found a couple of boxes. Here are the last miniatures I painted before taking my hiatus from the game.

From right to left. Capitol "Sea Lion", Bauhaus "Hussar", Imperial "Blood Beret"

I generally like the schemes; the only thing I'd change for sure is the blue under suit on the Hussar.

As a side note; I do not plan on using many if any of the Early Corporate minis. I'll be filling in using Urban Mammoth's Urban war line, Void and maybe even some GW IG conversions.

Here is some progress on the Razide.

Those zombies look very cool. I like the female Doomtrooper too. That Razide chap is looking alot better already BDJV.

Thanks for the comments!

I'm currently working on three minis the Razide, female Doomtrooper and an assassin from the mystic Brotherhood.

Here's an initial progress shot of the Assassin.

Damn, these models are legit, why did Warzone die?

20-07-2008, 01:06
Warzone died from mismanagement and disputes with the IP holders. It sucks because it is a great system and the miniatures were getting better with each release.

Here's a progress shot on the assassin. This guy has totally sidetracked me from the Razide. So I'll finish him then go back.

Wow like the look of the Assassin, nice paint scheme. I appologise in advance for asking this if it looks or sounds stupid, but what is Warzone? Keep up the work though its looking great so far.

Not a stupid question at all. Here's a little of the Warzone background for you.

It is the distant future, the Earth is a baron wasteland. Humanity has migrated to Venus, Mars, Mercury, Luna (the first settlement following the exodus from Earth), and the Asteroid Belt.

Over the centuries, the traditional nations of the world have merged into huge corporations, of which five are large enough to be called mega corporations: Bauhaus, they have a very Germanic feel, Capitol is American-influenced, Mishima has a Japanese theme, the British-inspired Imperial, and Cybertronic these guys have a very tech based theme complete with cyborgs and robots. Each Mega Corporation has it's own military.

Luna is considered to be neutral ground and is home to the massive city-state known as Luna City. The other two major power of this universe are the Brotherhood a fanatical religious organization, and the Cartel they are the watchdogs of the Corporations. The Cartel also formed the Doomtroopers; an elite force comprised of soldiers from all the Mega Corporations to fight the Dark Legion.

The discovery of the Dark Legion happened when mankind went exploring Nero, a fictional 10th planet beyond the orbit of Pluto, where they discovered a seemingly abandoned citadel. As they entered, the Imperial Conquistadors – a group of interplanetary explorers – accidentally broke the First Seal Of Repulsion, a thin ring of salt spread around the citadel. Inside, a mysterious iron plate was found, and as it was touched, the Dark Legion was brought to our dimension, and along with it, the Dark Symmetry.

Now onto gameplay.

Warzone is a Skirmish level Wargame it uses an alternating activation system instead of the IgoUgo that 40K uses. Each model may preform a number of actions based on it's unit profile. Actions include things like moving, shooting, climbing, throwing grenades.

Warzone has a more realistic feel compared to 40K. For example say your trooper has 3 actions; He can step out from behind a building, shoot the enemy, and them move back behind the building.

Look what I found in a box! :D

This is a Grizzly tank; the fig on the front is roughly IG sized to give a sense of scale. I need to finish tricking it out and fix a couple of the tracks.

22-07-2008, 05:42
It's a beast!!!

22-07-2008, 15:35
This stuff is all looking great!

I love WarZone. Can't wait to see more of your minis.

Oh, and I am totally jealous of the Grizzly.

Thanks for the comments, it helps keep me going!

I finally dug out my sand for basing so expect to see the finished Doomtrooper and Assassin tomorrow.

Here is the first member for my Capitol Light Infantry squad. He's not quite finished but he's almost there.

Damn this brings back memories... it's a damn shame that warzone died. It was a damn good game. Sure, the models could look alot better but then again the early GW models where pretty horrible aswell :P

I still have that cool poster with the grizzly tank and a mounted... marshal (?) infront of it in a box somewhere. Warzone and Mutant Chronicles really had amazing artwork.

And about the movie, sadly it doesn't even use 1% of all the awesome background in the MC-universe.. all it uses are some character and corporation names... but oh well, still a decent movie if you got nothing better to do.

24-07-2008, 08:05
Yeah the most of the early models were rough.

I have a friend that saw it at a hollyweird screening he enjoyed it and he's a Mutant Chronicles nut. I've enjoyed what I've seen of the new movie. I know about the background departure I'm ok with it as long as there is plenty of B rated Sci-fi goodness.

24-07-2008, 08:12
I really like the steampunk feel they got in the movie to be honest.

But this is becomming a bit off-topic I guess... Anyone remember if they ever made any Mutant Chronicles models before warzone came out? I remember an Alakhai (sp?) model where he talking on the phone/sucking his pinkey that looked damn good compared to the warzone nepharites.

24-07-2008, 08:21
Yes they did, I've seen that Alakhai mini I wish I had one he's kinda cool. The Assassin that I'm working on pictured above is from the pre-warzone miniatures line.

25-07-2008, 03:22
Here is the completed LI trooper. I'm not so thrilled with the hose to his gas mask, but it'll do.

27-07-2008, 03:01
Here's the finished Covert Ops Spec.

27-07-2008, 14:32
Lovely stuff. There were some great miniatures made for Warzone.

You do realise the Grizzly is worth a fair amount of cash? The last one on ebay went over $300.

Excellent work! I dabbled a bit with WZ minis about ten years ago, but none of my gaming friends were into it so I let it rest after a while. I still got an absolute truckload of minis for both WZ and Chronopia stashed in my hobby room - perhaps time to revisit them, methinks...
