So I'm getting back into the the game after a years break, and I'm hearing that GW has put out a new core rulebook where, among other things, in order to get a rank bonus you have to have 5 men in a rank not 4. Is this true?

Yup, this is true. Makes all those plastic boxes of 12 or 15 warriors a bit odd, doesn't it? :)

I think 2,5 years ago is about right.

I don't think 12 and 15 boxes are weird. Just gives a rank bonus of 1 or 2 instead of 3, and I think this is pretty okay, since it actually provides the bigger not-so-elite units with a numbers-bonus over the more elite units which should not be big and therefore should not normally have the maximum bonus available.

2 yrs ago fits. It just sucks for me, cus now i either have to field 15 and only have two ranks or 20 and use up 270 pts.

Not Orcs and Goblins man who field 25+ orcs and 40+ goblins in a reg. All that happens to them is it takes less men to kill before they lose a rank bonus.

The 7th edition release was in September 2006, so it will be soon the second anniversary.

Right, and having to kill fewer of something that's easy to kill affects them adversely. Just because I'm curious, what army do you play?

Yeah, but it'd make more sense if everything came in 20, 15, or as it is now, 5 or 10 models/set :)

I play Lizardmen. So fighting orcs is a long, teadieous process, hit on 4's wound on 4's, orcs aren't easy to kill, average about 2 a round when i fight without spears. With spears, kill on average about 3 a round. But with 5 to a rank that goes up to about 4 a turn with spears.

What was the last edition you played in?
If it was fifth then this list of changes (http://warseer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1414817&postcount=8) might be helpful. :)

Lizardmen are my primary army as well. I've never played them against OnG but I can see what you're saying. My normal opponent is Ogres and it's a similar problem except that they have 3 wounds each of course :(

I have a feeling salamanders do quite well against those Orcs and especially goblins.

oh, I love salamanders against goblins, they rip through 'em like no other. But my favorite unit to use against 'em is a unit of scouting skinks (usually 12 so they can take a little more damage and get more shots off) w/blowguns. They slow down the main block (if you can get them there) and 12-24 poison shots a round is deadly.

Socialist: you'll find in this edition that defeating OnG isn't all that hard.
