I have been active in the fantasy forums, and a lurker on the 40k forums for quite some time. I have gone through all the 40k armes and 2 really stand out for me. Orks and tyranids both seem like good choices, and my question to you is... Which one is cheaper, and hasn't been screwed over by the fifth ed. Also, feel free to make points about which one is better, just don't hate on other people. Thanks:)

Depending on the build, Tyranids can be a godzilla list (lots of really big things) or a horde list, or a mix of the two. Orks for the most part are a horde list from what I understand, so you would need a lot of miniatures to make an army.

Both are really good and neither have been screwed over. The only problem is that both require a lot of modals so bear that in mind.

It doesn't matter what army you take as long as:

1) You approach 40k as a beer and pretzels game that costs hundreds of dollars/euros/pounds.

2) You approach 40k as a fun game and not a game that stands up to a competitive environment.

If you keep that in mind, you are going to do just fine.

In my opinion, I'd say play Orks. Both Orks and 'nids have a lot of models (but cost about the same as smaller armies, as each model costs less. GW prices on efficiency, didn't you know?), but Orks are genuinely fun to play. You'll have a lot of laughs using them, and I think they're a great army environment to start 40k in.

It really depends on how serious you want your army to be. If you're in this game to laugh as your guys waddle across the table blowin the world to bits then Orks ho! But if you feel like you've got some dignity to hold on to (I know I do) despite nids being slimy monster they take this killin thing seriously

THanks for the advice, Eryx_UK, I WANT a horde army, I'm just wondering which is a cheaper/ cooler horde army

Well, orks are cheaper by far, since you can build nearly any ork model out of some plastic boyz and a heap of plasticard. Conversely, if you are not much of a modeler then I'd stay away from orks.

Tactically, both are fine in 5th.

And as far as inate superiority, the orks win. Their complete disreguard for safty, human/orkoid life, and every philisophical concern makes them amazing from a background stand point. They don't have any angst, they don't debate which course of action is "What the Primarch would have wanted" or "For the greater good." They just blow stuf to bitz, and have a laugh doing it. They have a purity of purpose that most other races lack. Granted, the tyranids are also extremely pure in purpose (Eat stuff).

But yeah, orks for the win! ;)

Out of those choices I personally would pick Orks. The newer models look really nice.

Though as stated either of these armies will be pricey simply due to the large number of models that would (generally) be required.

Generally depends on your preference... an army can look cool and have good background, but if it's not something that you like than it won't last for you. I'm speaking from experience.

Personally I'd go with the Nids, their cost really isn't all that different from the orks in a sense. Also the play style is pretty simple in the long run, Run-Eat-Run, while getting support from carnifexes and warriors. The paintjobs for the Nids normally are badass and one of my favorites to see on the tabletop.

I prefer Orks for reasons stated above, mostly because they're just hilarious :D

Both armies are typically hordey and can run up the bill quick, but you can play it smart and make each army entirely out of plastic.

Tyranids:
-Gaunts, Genestealers, Rippers, Carnifex, Warriors are all plastic and make up a good fluffy army.

Orks:
-Boyz, Trukks, Lootas/Burnaz, Warbikes, new snapfit Boyz, Nobs, Warboss, and Deff Koptaz from from the starter set. Also, you can convert all the specialist Orks from the regular boyz kit and whatever spare bits you have lying around (and if you don't, the kits come with plenty of gubbinz). All vehicles can be scratch-built (this is actually encouraged) or converted from other armies' toys and you really can't go wrong with it, so long as its Orky (big, shooty, stompy).

With the new 5th ed boxed ruleset on its way, you will be able to throw together a big horde for a tiny amount of money just by picking up the unwanted Ork stuff from Marine players (or buying a few of the boxes yourself and flogging the Marines). Tyranids have been only mildly hurt by 5th Ed overall, and Orks not at all really. So yeah, do Orks.

Very good advice.

Orks will be much cheaper once the new box set comes out.
