Well, Firebase's #7 is out, and I'd love to hear your thoughts about this issue's Epic-tastic SG Section...

... and should you feel like contributing to the next issue, please don't hesitate to PM me!

well, I liked it ;)

Hope folk liked the art stuff. Appologies for the shocking Ork Glyphs, they were mine. I'm still getting over the trauma of Art college, so my stuff will pick up going forward. Thanks again to Sam (my missus) for doing the good art in the SG section.

As C+E says, please feel free to contribute. I'm building up a library of art to use in any gaps, so even if you want to send over a sketch or two, go for it.

As I say in the issue, rogues gallery needs your submissions. The standard has been set very high by the various peeps that sent me Epic pics, I have soooo many more amazing pics saved to my cpu, so maybe more later...

If you are submitting art/pics, please send them in as high res as poss. One issue with thie issue is that some of the pics are quite pixallated due to the originals being around 1000pixels wide. I need them sa big as poss, preferably in the original format... camera phone pics sadly don't seem to cut it... (luckily Sam has a cool digi SLR that I have mostly figured out, so I get ok (ish) pics...)

Anyway, onward ever upward... expect better things to come.

Hope you like the slight visual tweaks... next issue I should have nailed down grids and base line grids so we will look even better!

Regards.

Jon (design monkey and sub for FB:SG)

I'm still digesting that Raiders supplement, but this is exactly the kind of stuff I love to see the fans do.

I also liked that the bulk of the Specilaist articles were included in the actual Firebase Mag instead of as a seperate section. I think that increases their exposure to people who don't normally play a specialist game.

Making the Raiders took over a year so they aren't small things to do. End result was spectacular though.

One thing to notice is that there was few places with one line of text by itself. That should be avoided. Like p. 137 the third column first line. One supposes that trying to get text edited (or layout or something) a bit to remove those would be quite good idea. Or p. 141 last line of third column.

Edit:
Btw, what's the deadline for next issue? I need to know how fast to paint my models if I'm going to finish the ToeG by then :).

@ Hena:

Cheers for the crit. This issue I was really trying to hit all widows and orphans. Layout shifted a couple of times right at the end so I might have missed a few layout issues. Suffice to say that I am a self taught layout designer (my journo college course element of design was basically us all left to our own devices!)

I'm still reading a lot of theory, trying to get my design up to spec, so any crit like this is very helpful! I try not to interfere with the words too much though, so serious editing to remove lines is a touchy subject (I don't want to upset our submitters or play with their copy too heavily.)

Keep it all coming people, it all goes to making things better than ever.

Regards.

Jon.

Would it be possible to send a copy of article to writer and ask them to do the edits for you to fit properly (doc/odt or text + pdf or something)? I would have no problem to changing the text in order to fix these things (happens on my ToeG as well, p. 145 first sentence).

I thought the intro to Epic section was well worded and did a great job breaking down the game. While it isn't directly beneficial to me, I can guarantee that I'll keep that print out when I go to the game store so potential players can read it.

trouble is as I make pic adjusts and what not then it will keep changing. Don't worry, I will keep a closer eye on things for the next issue :)

Can I request your next batch of pics to be taken on a neutral backdrop, I think some peeps find the pine a little distracting. Don't be afraid to show some close ups too! I like to see the detail peeps cram into their Epic armies.

Looking forward to part three of the article.

Cheers.

Jon.

I think I read in the advert that you no longer want pics embedded in Word docs, is this correct? Do you just want them zipped and sent en masse then?

I'm curious as I have an article for next issue, but the pics are all ready embedded.

First, thanks for the comments everyone.

Yes, Easy, no embedded pics ever please! We need high resolution stuff to work with.

As for the next release date, we're looking at October, so I'll get an official submission date down soon, but I'd say Hena you should try hard to have your article done by the middle of September. Sooner is always better though.

Carry on,

Hi,

actually, if the embedded pics are high resolution in Word there is no problem in transferring them into another program (InDesign for example) and keeping the good resolution.

And I agree, fiddling on others people work with text is hazardous. As Hena suggest on sending back and forth: that may work with one article but Firebase has lots of article which means the mail traffic back and forth would become a nightmare for the editor.
Although on larger articles I personally ask a go ahead from the author on the final layout.

best regards,
Horizon

This is true, but if you get several articles like this...say with 20 maybe more pictures each, it becomes a time consuming affair, something I've heard my other layout designer (not dancingmonkey) moan about for ages. :D

Oh dear Emperor, I have enough headaches with this magazine as it is! Thanks for the input Horizon.

What is the prefered method/file type for sending pics?

MS Word Document
(High Quality) Jpg pictures.

I just finished reading through all of the Raiders stuff.

The tutorials at the end for building all of those things was great. I'm considering how I can make some Ravens and Razorwings now, but for AI.

Inspiring stuff all around.

Thanks for the good words, Easy E. Please post your work so we can see what you do. WIP pics are good as well.
