View Full Version : Xeno Biologis: Ork Autopsy

01-08-2008, 11:52
Inspired by Xenology and the 'women' thread currently running in the background forum, I got to thinking about Xenobiology, so I thought you might enjoy this. It let me play around with different takes on orks ('what colour is their blood' etc?)
Let me know what you think – it might be fun to do some more!

Full Autopsy Performed

Unknown (Autolocutor's translation engine malfunctioning)
Coroner's Case #:

Relative Date of Birth:
13 (Gleaned from C14 dating)

Date of Death:
Body Identified by:

The corpse is presented in a sanctifed bodysack; and de-sanctified appropriately by the Purificator by the application of holy machine oil to the distal portions of the limbs. 0.00.410, under the auspices of Loon, brands the corpse with the twelve-pointed cog to protect the Xenologists from spiritual harm. Purifcator Adept Gen begins intoning the Rite of Protection and lights the brazier to cleanse the air of miasma.

The body is that of a normally developed ork soldier caste measuring 90 inches (spread out– giving an approximate standing height of six foot, once orkoid posture is taken into account) and weighing 388 pounds.
Initial studies show the body is cold and unembalmed. Lividity is fixed in the distal portions of the remaining limbs. The left eye is open, the right absent (judging from scar tissue, this was lost in a pre-fatal incident).

The sclera equivalent of the remaining eye is turgid and near black; on closer inspection the eye is filled with clotted blood, which has taken on a thick, spongy texture. Initial suspicion that this is due to the skills of Mechanicus chaemomancers or biological weaponry in the field is dismissed after the right eye socket is found to be plugged with old layers of the same secretion.

[Magos Loon queries at this point whether the eye is normally black; Vane responds that the sclera-equivalent is normally thick and yellow with a slitted pupil like a feline in dead orkoid specimens. Blood is pumped unconsciously into the eye during times of heightened excitement, giving a red-eyed look. This appearance is very changeable; the iris-analogue is extremely muscular and adaptable, and can appear slitted or round. In addition, the cornea-equivalant is thick with algal blood vessels; so in low-light levels, the eyes can appear entirely black, entirely red; or in rare cases of super-oxygenated or nitrated – orks being able to metabolise either acceptably – blood, the eyes can glow green. Vane ordered to be silent and continue with the damned autopsy at this juncture].

Further study of opticals find lighting to be insufficient, Adept Gen sent out to bring more candles. On return, petechial hemorrhaging found to be present in the conjuctival analogue of the eyes. The pupils measure 0.1 cm; unusally dilated for this pig-eyed species.

Upon removal of the subject's clothing, an odor of decay was detected. Areas of the body were swabbed and submitted for detection of hypochlorite. Following removal of the shirt, the missing arm is noted (Personal note Adept Gen: arm was not supplied with corpse). The wound is not fresh, and appears near black with encrusted haemorraging. The wound is consistent with Imperial chainsabre damage, crossing the anterior midline of the neck just below the laryngeal prominence and continuing in an impressive sweep to the ribcage, whereby the arm was removed. The width of the mark is ragged, and varies between 4 and 8cm and is horizontal in orientation; consistent with Skitarii chainsabre training in 'assault sweep Nu'. The skin of the anterior neck above and below the ligature mark shows petechial hemorrhaging.

The genitalia are absent, as usual in this species. Remaining limbs are unequal, asymmetrically developed and show evidence of multiple injuries (see subfiles Alpha–Pi). The claws are medium length and claw beds are a deep brown-green. There are multiple residual scars, markings and tribal tattoos; all burned off by Purificator Adept Colloquios Gen under Loon's supervision.

HEAD--CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM: Subsequent autopsy shows a broken hyoid-equivalent bone and multiple cranial fractures. Hemorrhaging penetrates the skin and subdermal tissues of the neck. The brain weighs 606 grams and within normal limits.

SKELETAL SYSTEM: The hyoid bone is impacted but not fractured; and shows typical acromelagy and overgrowth.

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM-THROAT STRUCTURES: The oral cavity shows minor petechial hemorrhaging present in the mucosa of the upper lip. Otherwise, the mucosa is intact and there are no injuries to the lips, teeth or gums. Numerous teeth are impacted and obstructing one another; a stench of rotting meat reveals trapped foodstuff (see subfile Omicron 'squiggly beast'), which is removed and ritually burnt.

There is no obstruction of the airway. The mucosa of the epiglottis, glottis, piriform sinuses, trachea and major bronchi are anatomic. No injuries are seen and there are no mucosal lesions. The hyoid bone, the thyroid, and the cricoid cartilages show impact trauma that has left them ribbed and buckled; but the bone has remained intact.

Adept Vane is keen to demonstrate orkoid resilience, and instructs 0.00.410 to 'strike the beast as hard as he can'. Repeated strikes with a nearby iron bar result in much wonderment as first the bar bends and then 0.00.410's primary arm motor burns out. A replacement is sent for. Vane reprimanded for goading 0.00.410 to 'lo; try to push the bar through the beast with the strength of the Machine God. And then see if you can pull one of its fingers off.' with excessive and unbecoming glee.

The 'lungs' weigh: right (top part), 840 grams (missing part) guessed at ˜400 grams; primary left 904 grams (excluding debris), secondary left 210 grams. The 'lungs' are unremarkable, except that the right has been cut in two with a single laceration, resulting in great bloodshed. On closer inspection, the left lung appears to have been impacted with a bolt shell in the past (subsequent analysis reveals it to have been fired from a M36 Diomedes boltgun, consistent with the Hawks of the Emperor Astartes chapter, despite the chapter not operating in this area for three centuries); and the shredding has caused a secondary lung-bud to swell. Closer inspection reveals numerous lungbuds, indicating that the heart-lung-stomach organ has massive regrowth and repair ability, as well as extensive trauma specialisation and redundancies.

CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM: The heart section of the heart-lung-stomach weighs 3 kilograms, and has a normal size and configuration for an orkoid soldier. The thick, glutinous blood has formed a black plug in the missing section through massive haemmoraging, and inspection of the plug reveals that blood cells at the edges of the plug have somehow begun to develop into cardial/respiratory tissue. The plug seems to have been formed after trauma, indicating the ork was alive for at least two or three hours after losing the arm (and the majority of its lungs and lights). Given a constant rate of alteration, Vane predicts that the plug would have become fully operational as part of the heart-lung-stomach within a standard day, demonstrating levels of regeneration and toughness well above human norms and approaching (if not surpassing) Laramman cell-enriched plasma/platelet solution.

Dissection of the plug reveals brown-red unclotted blood; mixed with dull green algal blood from the subdermal vascular system. The two vascular systems (cadiovascular and gastrovascular) seem to intersect at the heart-lung-stomach, perhaps accounting for conflicting reports of orks having green or red blood. At the intersection, the bloods mix into a brown and odiferous substance; seeming to gain in purifity (if such a word can be used) from the sub-dermal algal strands.

GASTROINTESTINAL SYSTEM: The mucosa and wall of the esophagus are intact and green-grey, without lesions or injuries. The gastric mucosa is intact and without injury below the . Approximately 4l of partially digested semisolid food is found in the heart-lung-stomach, which continues to digest. No duodenum, jejunum analogues exist. The ileum, colon and depositing rectum are well within normal orkoid limits.

URINARY SYSTEM: Absent. See cardio-gastro-intestinal system notes.

GENITAL SYSTEM: Absent. See cardio-gastro-intestinal system notes. (Loon's personal note – how efficient!)

TOXICOLOGY: Sample of right pleural blood and bile are submitted for toxicologic analysis. Stomach contents are saved. (On consideration, stomach contents are burnt and discarded owing to stench.)

SEROLOGY: A sample of right pleural blood is submitted in the EDTA tube. Routine toxicologic studies were ordered.
After splitting the blood into faunal and algal strands; it appears that this is a complete symbiosis – strands do not develop separately and are inviolable. Consymmetry of strands is near-perfect, and supports Anzion's theory of forced evolution such that [CLASSIFIED]

Cerebrospinal fluid culture and sensitivity: Low in general; algal strands of DNA-equivalent seemed not to respond to light stimulus.

Gram stain: Unremarkable (Personal note Fermis Vane: rather unpleasant-looking, and more unpleasant stench)
Culture: Massive growth after 24 hours – culture burnt. Area cleansed with promethium.

Cerebrospinal fluid bacterial antigens:

Hemophilus streptococcus B: Negative

Drug Screen Results:
Urine screen {Immunoassay} was NEGATIVE.
Ethanol: 13 gm/dl, Blood (Heart-Stomach)
Ethanol: 0 gm/dl, Vitreous

Time of Death: Body temperature, rigor and livor mortis, and stomach contents approximate the time of death between [CLASSIFIED].

Immediate Cause of Death: Unknown; multiple possible causes. Likely cardial collapse after seventeenth las-shot though heart-lung-stomach.
(Secondary opinion from Fermis Vane: clearly death was caused by despair at the might of the Machine God, though haemorraging of primary and secondary haemolytic systems, missing limb, ragged tear in chest and multiple las-shot and shrapnel wounds may be pertinent).

Manner of Death: Righteous xenicide.

Remarks: Decedent originally presented to this office as casualty of war. Findings proven accurate. Decedent burnt as proscribed.

We feel that your Anti-Imperial stance on the Orkoid Regenerative process does not just border on heresy, it surpasses it. You referred to Orkoid Regeneration as approaching, if not surpassing, Laramman cell-enriched plasma/platelet solution. For this you have been sentenced to subsequent execution by Commissariat Personnell. Your report has been expunged from Imperial Biologica Records.

I loved your report, though :D

Why are all the talented ones heretics? Such a shame...

Seriously though, good job.

I just have 1 thing to point out...Streptococcus should come first in terms of correct nomenclature as in Streptococcus hemophilus. Or it could be Hemophlic streptococcus. I know I know, you must be saying...Demrush you idiot this is just sci-fi...not some post-doc paper. I'm sorry! I couldn't help it!

I just thought it would be worth pointing out to make your post all the more credible. I'd give you more criticism but I don't want to get into physiology during summer...I do enough of that the rest of the year hehe.

Once again, excellent work.
