Hi, I've been a long time lurker on Warseer and have been really impressed with the project logs. Hence I decided to create a project log which will record my progress in a crusade to improve my painting and general hobby skills i.e. sculpting, photo taking and also to act as a sourse of motivation for myself.

As a starting point I have post a pic of a Terminator Chaplin I paint recently, so any ideas regarding how I could improve .i.e. painting, photo would be great.

What’s next, well I have a stack of 40k stuff to paint and I'm planning a large order of FW Death Korps :D

Coolhand! :D

I bow before you, sir. (I'm jjward on SFM) Love your work, as always.

Couple of notes... The photo isn't all that bad. I have certainly seen worse over the years, but three things do strike me.

First, it's a little small. Second, there's a fair bit of grain in the image, and third, the back ground clashes a little with the mini, so...

General pointers;

The camera has an easier time focusing on things that a reasonable distance away. Stand back from the subject and zoom in to preserve detail.

Provide the miniature with good lighting. Either next to an open window - remembering to white balance - or a desk lamp or two. If you're familiar with 3 point lighting, and being so adept with 3D I imagine you may well be, try to use it where possible.

Turn the flash off. A pretty obvious one.

Mount the camera on a tripod, and have a reasonably long exposure time. (say, 1/4 of a second or better)

Put the miniature on a fairly plain background. A white piece of card bent up against a wall would do nicely.

That's about the limit of my knowledge on mini photography. Hope it helps. :)

Nice to see you around here.

Hi Coolhand, just wanted to say that is a fantastic paint job. Is it for a specific marine chapter at all?

There isnt a lot to improve on there. The skull helmet looks really nice. Maybe a bit more of a highlight on the handle strapping on the crozius? But thats really picking at nothing.

Would you consider any text on the scrollwork?

Thanks, not decided on a chapter as yet any suggestions? I agree regarding the handle strapping and text on the scrolls, but I can never seem to get any text to look right.

I think a chapter of your own creation might be best as it lets you run free with regards to colour schemes.

The only advice I an offer over the scroll text is maybe get one of those 0.5m fineliner pens and practice on a model to see if that helps? Its easier when youre not fighting a flimsy set of bristles that run out of paint after a while! :)

Thats a very nice terminator chaplain you have painted there. There isn´t that much to say about it (other than it´s very nice). The handle on his Crosius has allready been mentioned, a couple of highlights more and it will be topnotch. the scrolltext is also something that I miss, the dedication on the details on the rest of the model is very good so it´s kind of sad that you will leave something like the scrolltext out.

My advice is just to doodle some black (brown, grey or other color of your choice) lines to represent the text...it doesn´t really have to be real letters/text to give the impression that something is written on the scroll.

Whist waiting for my Death Korps to arrive I'm working on a Khorne Lord mounted on a Juggernaut of from the new chaos Bloodcrusher of Khorne boxset. Not sure if I should try and sculpt a saddle of some sorts, let me know what you think or any suggestions.

Nice onversion mate. You know what Lord Khorne likes! Skulls!! :p

How about a seat thats based on the chaos terminator trophy racks? A load of skulls on spikes would look cool.

Good work, cant wait to see your FW stuff painted though.

Death Korps arrived yesterday, it felt just like xmas. :D

Painted up a test mini to try out a colour scheme is was a bit rushed so not the best finish wise , anyway I’m not to sure about the green great coat or the cables for the hell-gun. Suggestions or criticism welcome

After doing a test mini I'm no longer sure of my colour for my death korps, I now thinking of going for snow bases.

I think of a doing the mini's either to like camo style 1 or 2, not sure which to go for.

Camo Style 1
