Hey all, joined the forum recently thou been lurking for long time. Especially the modeling sites have looked good and active. And few days ago finished my latest project and thoughed that I should share my work.

Started this army few summers ago, and now started painting it again couple of weeks back for a tournament here held last weekend.

Theme was to make camo pattern Tau with detailed urban bases and quite strong weathering.

Here's some pics.

HQ suits:

Crisis suit team 1

In the tournament last friday I had a good time with them. I like how 5ed handels for most parts. Finished 8/38 with one 20-0 win 17-3 loss and 15-5 win.

Future additions include Broadsid unit, two Piranhas that I have assembled, and maybe few Forge suits to pose as new HQ ones. Also thinking about another FW unit and giving them both devilfishes. Thou might take a while before I add something for this army, but I post it here on blog side cause I do plann to make some additons.

C&C are wellcome

Wow, Great stuff. usually I hate camo, but that looks smooth!

12-08-2008, 08:33
must send this to my friend who wants to do a tau army...

12-08-2008, 08:59
Like the Kroot, never normally like them but you make them look really good. Well done! A very nice Tau army.

12-08-2008, 11:01
Awesome! *itches to do jungle camo Tau*

12-08-2008, 11:55
Great looking Tau, I love the camo, very nice! :D

12-08-2008, 12:12
Those tau look awesome! Great work on the weathering and camo!

12-08-2008, 12:33
In one word: grand! It should be an impressive sight on an urban table.

12-08-2008, 12:45
Amazing army Northern!!! I demand a tutorial on how yuo do your camo, for it is among the nicest I have seen to date.

Very nice. I particularly like the XV8 Crisis Suits. Hope I can see more in the future.

12-08-2008, 19:08
Wow, very nice MARPAT. Despite the fact that it clearly isn't digi-cam (it's too not-blocky), it still LOOKS like digi-cam... amazing.

12-08-2008, 19:18
That's indeed a super sweet army you got there.

12-08-2008, 19:55
Thanks for all the comments people.

Yamagon: Hope your friend finds this inspirational.

Girathon: For the camo I used:

First black undercoat and then...
Brown-Vallejo earth/GW Graveyard earth
Green- Vallejo Cayman Green/ GW Catachan green
Khaki- Vallejo Khaki/ GW Kommando khaki

I painted in 2-3 layers first the rough shape with fairly large brush and then additional layers with fine tuned pattern done with smaller brush. I'll try to make more throughout tutorial if I have time.

Horus Covenant: Yeah, I too hope to see them more :)

This is all very well done. Interesting conversions on the Crisis suits and very smoothly done camo. The photography is also good which can really make a difference when presenting a project like this.
It would be extra cool to see a full army shot!

Will you be adding to this army or is this a complete project now?

25-08-2008, 11:20
Very nice stuff. The camo is brilliant.

How do you do the pattern? I've tried a couple of times to paint camo, but the pattern always ends up awful. Any tips?

Has been a while since I last posted in this thread, but here's some new stuff.

Since Tau got their update in April I have wanted to do some new stuff for my army. I attended one tournament week or so ago, which was a perfect excuse to paint some new stuff for this project. And now i even got some photos taken.

First of a Broadside unit, two Shas'ui and one Shas'vre with High-yield missile pods and Smart missile systems. Love the new design for these guys, gorgeous models. I was disappointed about the High-yield missile pods design thou, which looked like the good old ham hands IMO, that we saw in so many plastic kits in early 2000s. As the Rail rifle from this set looked so cool I decided to combine the weapons to get more Ummmff look for the models. Ended up with this result, which I am quite happy with, glad to hear your comments on them as well.

And the new plastic Pathfinders, really nice set. Some really cool SWAT/modern military poses. I wish GW would do a plastic set that had these kind of poses but with humans.

Sorry for double post but here is still Ethreal to be showcased. My local store didn't have any on stock and I was running out of time before the tournament. So I ended up converting mine from Island of Blood HE mage.

Glad you brought this thread back to life, just the kind of camo colours I will be attempting on my tau. Any tips?

Love the broadsides consider that idea stolen!

07-08-2013, 13:37
Thanks SilentSnake,

Here is a link to tutorial I did on Dakka few years ago on how to paint this camo http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/242021.page

Not sure how it would look if I re-post it here so I'll put just the link on safe side.

Additional note from the tutorial, on this newer patch I painted bit more khaki colored components as on these you can show the weathering effect quite nicely, on the camo parts I would keep the weathering minimum because it is already quite busy pattern. Also some solid color parts calm down the model and give more effect for the camo pattern.

Hope this helps, and feel free to use the broadside idea :)

That is a most awesome camo tutorial and I will be putting it to work very soon.

Many thanks!

Edit: what colours do you use for the dark gunmetal parts on your models?

09-08-2013, 16:40
Thanks, hope it turns out ok.

If you mean the actual metal, it's Runefang steel/Chainmail with some Nuln oil wash over it.

As an update, here are the Riptide pics. Overall very nice set, very tempted to do another one for the army.

Some close-ups. Did some detailing with Tau transfers, they are surprisingly big, can't see them being used except on this and hammerhead.

Fantastic work on this army, I'm especially liking the HYMP conversion, as like you I hated the goofy/hammer/toylike look of the originals and have been wondering ever since they came out how to make them look good. You hit the nail on the head, mark another blatant idea theft here too :)

11-08-2013, 14:26
Just found this log and mightily impressed with the broadside conversion, can consider that idea stolen (I just need to figure a way of putting that onto the forgeworld broadside suits now....). The camo is also really well executed, nice to see proper camo on Tau. Im working on my own winter Tau with real world inspired camo so its nice to see that it can work aesthetically

13-08-2013, 19:39
Impressive Tau, a phrase I don't use that often. Broadsides stand out in particular, really like the mml-guns!

13-08-2013, 21:00
Your broadsides look awesome. I wasn't even going to consider the missile pod variant because it looked so stupid. Now i just might steal your idea. :)

20-08-2013, 12:22
Thanks for all the nice comments people and sorry for late reply.

And feel free to use the Broadside conversion, greatest rewards of modelling to see someone else getting something concrete out of your work, spread the word of feasible looking HYMP :)
