Hi Warseer,

This will be my new Eldar army log. I got bored with my first army (just the colourscheme really, but that warrants an entire new army right?) so I decided to paint a completely new army.

Introduction:
This army has to be ready in time for the dutch GT in about two months, so I have quite the challenge ahead of me. That's also the reasen to create a log for it, as you guys can convince me to keep going at an insane pace.
My army will consist mostly of aspect warriors taking the fight to enemy lines on foot. I won't include any falcons, serpents or prims, because back in 4th everyone did that and I decided to let my army go at it on foot. I really enjoyed the way that army played, so I'll go for something similar with my new army.

Background:
You know. Eldar, the Fall, Slaanesh. The usual. I'll take some time to create a more interesting background later on.

What I need Warseer to do:
- Remind me to keep painting.
- Remind me to improve my painting.
- Remind me to write some background material.
- Do whatever it is you guys do to keep project logs going.

Mandatory workspace pics:
What it used to be:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s303/Niels_fotos/Eldar/DSCN2219.jpg

What it is now:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s303/Niels_fotos/Eldar%20v2/DSCN4184.jpg

How it got to be so neglected:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s303/Niels_fotos/Eldar%20v2/DSCN4185.jpg

Where I paint now:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s303/Niels_fotos/Eldar%20v2/DSCN4186.jpg

Yup, my laptop really sits on a box so I can place mini's and paints underneath it.
Anyhow, as you can see I had a really nice (if somewhat cluttered) painting desk, but I somehow managed to create a pile of stuff in front of it. Therefor I had to move a portion of my paints to my other desk and continue painting there. Try to guess what sort of crap is in the pile, as not even I am sure of it anymore.

Next post: first pics of the army!

Sorry for the long wait guys, it's been a very busy week for me. And everything that could possibly go wrong, went horribly wrong Murphy's law in pratice...

Anyway: update time!

The colours are a bit different on the actual models. I know it looks like Iyanden, but it'll work out somehow... Just don't ask me how yet :P.

Wraithlord:

And his tabbard thingy:

Rangers:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s303/Niels_fotos/Eldar%20v2/DSCN4189.jpg
These guys need a little touching up, but you get the idea.

I really need to figure out how to take some quality pics, but these will do for now I think.
So tell me what you think.

Next up: my Autarch conversion (when I actually get some work done on her).

That pretty darn brilliant.

It doesn't look too much like Iyandan IMO. The colours are the same-ish but Iyandan is more bright and .... well Yellow.

Keep up the good work and go faster :p

Very nice yellow colour on the wraithlord, subtle and not bright like the classic Iyanden scheme. Can't wait to see more stuff in this log!

Thats some damn nice blending.

Radium

Thanks guys!

@ rickie8437: The yellow is quite a long process. It's something like this:
- Grey undercoat (vallejo primer)
- Iyanden Darksun basecoat
- Wash with Graveyard Earth + Snakebite Leather (4:1) + matte medium + lots of water
- Repaint Iyanden Darksun
- Highlight with Iyanden Darksun + Bleached Bone (start with very little BB, increasing the amount with every successive highlight)
- Extreme highlight with pure BB
- Extreme extreme highlight (????) with BB + skull white.

Take a while to get it right, but I think it's worth the effort.

Time for another update!

I call this one "Prince Yriell's gender change"

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s303/Niels_fotos/Eldar%20v2/DSCN4197.jpg

I just need to connect the loose bit of hair with the rest of the head. I should have some pics from before I attached the head, but I can't find them right now. Hopefully I'll find the soon so you guys can see what I did.
I'll have to wait to tomorrow to finish the hair, ears and other details, and wait another day after that before I can even start thinking about undercoating. Oh well, leaves more time to paint other stuff I guess.
I'm quite happy with the GS work so far, as I've never really done anything like this before, and I always seem to screw up my GS. I used to hate to work with it quite a bit, and it hated me back.

Again: let me know what you think. C&C is very welcome as always!

Best and most realistic looking Iyanden colour scheme I have seen so far ;)
Why not admit it? Not all Iyanden are Wraith Guard, there are Aspect warriors left.

Idaan
30-08-2008, 22:32
Or just make them some grittier and less shiny Iyanden splinter-faction that went into exile, started a colony or created their own Craftworld (before the tyranid attack Iyanden was the greatest craftworld, so it could well suffer from overpopulation despite the "dying race" catchphrase). You could create some interesting tension in your fluff regarding their attitude to their mother-craftworld's peril.

Ah, whatever. That's one helluva blending. I'm most impressed and begging for more.

I will be using 5 aspects I think. I really think any Eldar army should consist mostly of aspect warriors.

The original idea was to make it a craftworld founded by Yriel's sister with all the people the farseers cast out when they kicked Yriel out of the craftworld. This means your piece really fits what I had in mind, and only makes my ramshackle story a lot better!

I just woke up, so I'm going to shower and eat first. After that I'll start painting again.
Today's work will be a unit of Dark Reapers. Let's see if I can get them done in a single day :P.

He is a bit rushed, so I'll have to do some more work to blend in the highlights a bit. But overall I'm quite happy considering I'm painting with a major hangover right now. Curse you beer!

Anyway, C&C time again! Let me know what you think and what I should improve.

Very inspiriting so far :) . Fluff sounds interesting and your wright lord is top notch. Although magenta reaper launcher is a little too much for me as I prefer more monochromatic minis.

Can't wait to see more ;)

Radium
31-08-2008, 12:05
I was afraid of the same thing, but IRL the reaper launcher doesn't look quite as bright, it's purple somewhere between Liche Purple and Warlock Purple. I'll try to take a pic where the colours are more accurate.

Right, real life has finally caught up with me and leaves me with less time to paint and hang around warseer than I like.

Only a small update this time, Striking Scorpions!

They will end up looking something like this:

I'm not real happy with the details, as they're sort of rushed. I will improve on them when I have some time. Probably tomorrow.

*EDIT*
That's very interesting Alsharoth! I'll try and build her later on.

The rest of the army is intented to look better ;). I might start my Warp Spiders this weekend, and they'll be insane if I manage to pull of what I intend to do. Then again, given the tim eI have left to finish the army I will probably stick to this level of painting.

Thanks! People like you get people like me through the day ;).

My question for Warseer: should I include warwalkers (the nasty Scatter Laser variant) or go for more 'other'. Other being some form of infantry (preferably aspect warriors), or maybe vypers?

I still need to learn how to take proper photos, and I need a new lightbulb for that. I'll fix that in due time.
For now you'll have to do with crappy pics...
Right, I'm off to finish (and retouch) my Dire Avengers, which I started on for my other army, but never really finished.

Again let me know what you guys think, and you'll see some boys in blue later today (I hope I can finish them that fast, leaving tomorrow for some guardians or warp spiders).

Nice work so far.
As to your camera you need to find you macro point for the camera which is the distance form model to camera with 0 zoom ( on mine its 90cm).
place the camera at that point, set macro and zoom in till you loose focus then back off. if you have a compatable camera you can buy filters which improve your maco distance

this is my f5.7>f57 camera @90cm
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f352/AJB2K3/Althan/banantree.jpg
with a +10 filter I get to 30cm

Cursed parties... Always tempting me to go and stop painting...

I got dragged to a party last night, so I had to finish the blue boys this morning. They're almost done now, just need to finish the power weapon on the Exarch, paint his shimmer shield and do some crazy freehanding on his banner.

Thanks! I started off with a white undercoat, then followed something like this:

Skull White
Sunburst Yellow
Golden Yellow
Blazing Orange
Blood Red
Red Gore
Scorched Brown
Chaos Black

With lots of mixes in between...

It still needs LOTS of work though, the colours really need to be smoothed out some more, and the black needs to be highlighted etc etc etc. And that's even before I start all the details, which will probably take forever.

The hair was relatively easy. I started with the lowest ends, then did the hair on her head and finally connected the two. I thought that was the easiest way as it gave me the guidelines where to end up with her hair.

Also, I'd love to see your farseer, I intend to give that one a go some day too, and more inspiration is always a good thing.

I'm still toying with that idea. Might just go for it. But I'll wait untill I'm done with all the gems, those will brighten the Avatar up a LOT. Maybe even enough to darken the skin to the point where it seems really molten.

I think it's called "Spandepace Armour" - not quite as durable as power armour but feeks like you're wearing nothing at all (and Eldar seem to like that).

"Spandepace Armour" & "panzee skinsuits" LOL! I partial to calling it spadex with plastic plates velcroed on top!

Radium, I'm using the standard floppy haired dude found in the plastic guardian box set.

I know, I know, its not anywhere near feminine enough so massive plastic surgury is called for.

I've filed it and GSed it to a more suitable "bone structure". I used it as the base because the nose IS feminine enough and I figured one less item to sculpt would make it easier to work from.

Will post WIP pics of it soon, once I get the hair done!

BTW which head is on your Autarch? Surely not the original Yriel one with plastic surgury? o_O

I used a head from some wood elf thingy. Don't ask me which set, I just asked a clubmate for some WE heads :P. Then I resculpted half the head, to be more Eldary...

Be sure to post the WIPs here too, I'd very much like to see what you manage to do with that head.

stunning.

I've been painting up eldar all week, I'm going for a similar blue/yellow as you but sadly I cant paint like that!

I was going to go with all original RT minis for my Aspect warriors as I dont think those Goodwinn sculpts have been bettered but seeing your scorpions I am changing my mind! I still prefer the old old reapers mind.

Radium
18-09-2008, 09:08
Agreed, the old Reapers look way better.
But I don't really have the time and money to find the old models. Nor do I really want to, the new ones fit in with the Exarch, and I really like the new Exarch!

And you really should show us some of your Eldar, I'm always curious to see what other people do when they have a similar colourscheme.

Radium
18-09-2008, 13:33
Sure Aegius, see my post #42:

I'm glad you think the avatar sticks out, my previous avatar (from my other Eldar army) was not so big a succes...

Alright, update time! Only a small update, try and enjoy it though.

Spear tip:

The spear shaft still needs a LOT of work, I've just done some early work on it. As you can see I've done the hands, speartip and some touching up on the body. Also, note the glowing hot part of the spear where he holds it.
I'll probably get the spearshaft done tomorrow, and hopefully get the gems done as well.

As always; let me know what you think and enjoy!

looking at the way you've painted the Avatar has made me want to get one now, I like the lava effect that you've achieved and wouldn't mind having a go myself. have you thought about playing with some lighting effect going onto the tabard?

Radium
20-09-2008, 14:02
No, I haven't thought about that Aegius. I might add that some time.
What exactly did you have in mind for lightning effects?

Although for now, this will have to do, as I'm sort of getting tired of painting the dude. I will probably improve him some time, but I have to do some guardians first.

Enjoy!

Thank you! I'm sure you could pull it off just as well ;). I'm no great painter or anything remotely near that. I just take my time and know where to place a couple of highlights.

Anyhow, I got two guardians done (except for the heads or the bases). I'll try and finish a couple more tonight or maybe tomorrow and then I'll upload some pics.

Such a striking Avatar! I have some trouble with the tabard, and the intense glowing heat of the Avatar...maybe he could've had a tabard of molten metal, with heat crafted markings?

Radium
20-09-2008, 20:23
I agree the tabbard looks a bit weird, but it is one of the few things to tie him in with the rest of the army.

Some work the guardians. The models aren't real fun to paint, but it's a necessary evil I guess. As you can see, a lot of work still needs to be done. Only two are really done bodywise, and they all need heads.

And even more reason for happiness: today my little brother got me a ticket for an upcoming Arch Enemy show!

Thank you! I really like how your farseer is coming along, I'm gonna check your blog later on ;).

Yeah, it's all freehanded on. How I did it?
Well, I first painted the canopy as normal, then outlined the freehands in black (the craftworld sigil, and the space between the breaking thingies) and finally added colour to the now black outlines.

I make it sound real easy, and it actually is :P. It just takes some time to get the black outlining right, after that it's back to kindergarten and colour within the lines.

I'm still in the middle of painting guardian armour (which really, really BLOWS CHUNKS!) I decided to post my armylist while the paint dries.

Princess Yrenna (Prince Yriel)
Avatar

8 Striking Scorpions - Exarch, Claw, Shadowstrike
6 Fire Dragons - Exarch, Firepike
5 Wraithguard

9 Dire Avengers - Exarch, PW/Shimmershield, Bladestorm
10 Guardians - Scatter Laser
5 Rangers
4 Jetbikes - Shuriken Cannon

8 Warp Spiders - Exarch, Power Blades, Dual Deathspinners, Withdraw

Wraithlord - Shuriken Cannon, Scatter Laser
3 Dark Reapers - Exarch, Tempest Launcher, Crack Shot

total @ 1699 pts.

That's my armylist for both tournament and casual play (1700 pts is the standard around here). Not the toughest list ever, but I don't want to go into the cheese-zone (okay, maybe Yriel is a bit iffy) and I generally want to play with models I like.

Tell me what you think about it.

Guess you're right... But I had to make up an excuse to show something as lame as a couple of bases ;).

This particular cat will play the part of Ynnead, as soon as the farseers feed enough souls to him so he comes to life and all that :P.
And he's also the main reason I don't paint nearly enough when I have to, he thinks it's funny to sleep wherever I decide to paint.

Thank you on the painting part! I feel I'm going downhill on the quality aspect with the guardians and the jetbikes though.

Although he is known to do amazing feats like wrecking stuff by lying down on it, eating insane amounts of cat food and opening doors (yes, I have a cat that can open doors all by himself... somehow). So curing hangovers sure sounds like something he'd do.

On a more serious note:
Guardians:

Why, thank you kind sir. I'm really happy with how everything looks together. Even though every aspect is painted in their traditional colours, I think it's still somewhat coherent as an army. Hope you guys agree with me!

Great army! It'll look so ace on that display base...

I certainly hope so. It'll take some time to get that beast done, but it will make transporting my army a lot easier, with all the bases magnetised and all that.

Very, very nice. I've missed your painting log over the last few weeks. Glad you are back, please don't leave us again.

I'm sorry for that. It wasn't my intention to leave you guys, it's just that things came up...

Dude, please tell us how you painted the Striking Scorpion armour, i love the turqoise shade in the bottom and all the way up to yellow, it's beautiful.

Thank you! It's quite easy really...
I started with a black undercoat, then painted the whole thing scaly green. After that I picked out all of the panels with snot green, and highlighted that by mixing snot green with golden yellow. Keep adding yellow until you're almost at pure golden yellow for the final highlight. Takes a lot of layers, but the result is worth it!

I just found this through a friend of mine. You have a very good looking army there my man! I'm looking forward to seeing it in person at the GT!

Which brings the total of aspect temples in my army to a whopping 6.

Fantastic ! love every model :)

Thank you! Comments like this really keep me going on, spending all my free time painting little metal men ;).

Thanx for the pic.. but hmm i wanna see how they turn out more for this army :P might be interesting :P

Agreed. Some day I'll add banshees. And a lot of other stuff ;). Right now it's a race against time to get this done in time for the GT.
But I think I have a couple of left over banshees lying around, I'll try and get those painted in a week or 2.

wow, as someone who's been slacking in painting up my own Eldar army, your painting is very inspirational!

could you share how you painted your others aspects and also the yellow parts on your scorpions? I really like the effect you achieve with your painting style.

Do you use wash at all coz the effect looks really smooth.

No washes for me, I don't really like how you lose control over the painting, I only use washes in the first stage of painting, to shade the models.

The yellow on the scorpions is something like graveyard earth + snakebite leather, iyanden darksun, iyanden darksun + bleached bone. Repeat last step a couple of times with more bone after each layer.

As for the other aspects, which ones are you interested in? I don't really think I know exactly how I painted them all (of some I do, but just not all).

@Radium: I know what you mean... It feels strange that I finished my army one week before the GT. It almost feels like cheating. ;)

Yeah, I had that feeling last year. But this year I'm going back to basics, and over the next week I'll curse myself for not starting earlier, and stuff like that.

ahh thnx for the tips. For other aspects, I'm interested in the Dire Avengers and Fire Dragons, particularly how you did the white helms on the DA.

Radium
18-10-2008, 11:48
Right, that makes stuff a lot easier for me ;).

The Avengers are painted roughly like this:
- Grey undercoat
- Regal Blue
- Wash with midnight blue + liche purple
- Regal blue to pick out the armour plates
Highlights with Regal Blue + Ice blue (start with very little Ice Blue, adding more with each layer) up to pure Ice Blue.
final highlight with ice blue with a tiny bit of white.

Helmets:
- White undercoat
- Couple of layers of white to make sure it's really white
- Very thin glaze of codex grey around the gems and deeper areas (the base of the crest etc).
- Highlight with white again.

Fire dragons (I painted them about a year and a half ago, so my memory is a bit fuzzy):
- Black Undercoat
- Dark Flesh
- Bestial Brown + Scab red on the plates
- Highlights with bestial brown, scab red and blazing orange (again, adding more orange for each layer) up to pure blazing orange.
- Some final highlights with blazing orange + golden yellow (about 1:1).

Hope this helps!

Once again thanx for the painting tips! I'm just really curious... how do you find time to paint before GT and STILL POst here O.o???

Radium
18-10-2008, 15:12
I don't...

Which means less sleep for me. But I don't mind, it's nice to get some feedback from warseer, and it gives the little distraction I need to keep painting (I can't paint for hours on end without losing interest).

Another small update:

Did some work on the hawks. As with most of the aspects, I'm going for an old school (2nd ed.) look (for those of you who have the 2nd ed Eldar codex, check the painted aspect warriors on pages 38 and 39).
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s303/Niels_fotos/Eldar%20v2/DSCN4500.jpg

On another note, I've done some work on the display board. The first coat of magnetic paint is now drying, hopefully that stuff will work out nicely.

Awesome color scheme on that dreadnought and the guardians. I'm getting ready to do some Iyanden stuff and I was going to go with the more traditional bright yellow but you tempt me greatly to to go with these colors instead. I'm probably not up to your standard of blending though. Great job sir!

And again a minor update on the hawks*:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s303/Niels_fotos/Eldar%20v2/DSCN4502.jpg

And I got bored, so I took a picture of the 3 generations of Dire Avengers I went through, from left to right*: about two years ago, a year ago and finally a couple of months ago. You can really see the progression from wanting to paint codex-style to doing my own thing, to doing something in between.
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s303/Niels_fotos/Eldar%20v2/DSCN4503.jpg

Wow, thank you! Maybe I should go into comission painting :P.

Yrenna waited in the council chambers for the return of the seers. When finally the solemn procession returned from the crystal dome, they had but one onimous message for her; "Gather your chosen warriors for war. With the next moon you will walk unto an enemy unknown to a fate unknown."
She had felt the anticipation for a while now, and the seers confirmed her suspicions, she would have to lead the craftworld to war once more, perhaps for the last time. And she also realised there was but one thing to do, so with a nod she left the seers and headed for the aspect temples.

I finally wrote a piece of background! Anyhow, I wanted to let you guys know I'm still working on the board, should be done tomorrow. Which would be just in time, as the GT is this saturday....

Well, I still have a bit of painting to do, some touching up etc. And I have to paint the entire display board... So your prediction might come true after all ;). And that has been the way of the past 2 years, this year I wanted to finish it somewhat more on time ;).

Thanks! Of course you guys will hear the results. And this isn't finished by a long shot ;). I still have a LOT of things to paint, and even more incoming very soon. You'll see more of this army than you'd like (that is, if you keep looking through my log in the future).

I just got back! Yay!

I got to see Melchor (and his amazing chaos army) in person. Turned out I already knew the guy, just not who he was on warseer.

On to the results (which are somewhat disappointing due to abyssal dice):
Battle 1:
The first battle was vs Nico (who is a VERY good player) with Nurgle Daemons. We played a seize ground with pitched battle deployment. Loss 14 - 6.

Battle 2:
I had to face a black templar army in an annihilation dawn of war game (he had very little kill points so it was a tough one from the start). His saves were truly blessed by the emperor as he only failed about one in 10 or so.
I tried my best, but he got some very lucky shots towards the end of the game. Loss 20 - 0.

Battle 3:
Capture and Control in spearhead vs nids. He had 4 shooting fexes, a flyrant, 2 zoanthropes and lots of genestealers. I got really lucky as all of his genestealers outflanked on the wrong tableedge, where my scorpions came in my turn. The scorpions decided to rampage through 2 squads of the buggers, but that was about all I managed to do in the battle. He rolled unbelievably good on his saves (about 50% on warp field invul save), so I had very little impact on the game.
Loss 12 - 8.

Battle 4:
Annihilation pitched battle vs Blood Ravens. Everything went according to plan and I only lost 13 models while I slaughtered every single marine in sight.
Win 20 -0

Battle 5:
Dawn of war Seize Ground vs Marines with 2 land raiders. My hawks actually managed to immobilise a land raider with their haywire grenades, and if we would have had another turn I would have vaporized his army, now he got off real good.
Draw 10 - 10.

I got 28 out of 30 points for painting, 16 out of 20 for the quiz and 15 out of 15 for WYSIWYG.

At the end I placed 32nd out of ~90. It could have been better had I rolled a bit more statistically sound dice. But I had fun, and that's what it's all about!

Sorry I don't have any pictures, I completely forgot my camera. However, others have taken enough pics, so when I find the link I'll post them.

Wulf;3040330']Whaaat? You didn't win Best Army?
What army was even better painted than yours then?

I dare say none. But they changed the award from best painted army to best army, which means general impression, conversions, theme etc all count for a lot as well. And one guy spent the last 7 years of his life converting and painting an army of Adeptus Custodes, and he won. I must admit he was the best of the 5 selected armies, but the other selections were all rather crap.
Oh well, better luck next year. With another army once again :P.

About the titan...
It's still in its box...

I pinned most of it already (and magnetized the arms), and gave the thing a good scrub to remove forgeworld's cursed mould crap. I plan on undercoating all the pieces later today, and start painting somewhere this week.
I'm going to paint all the parts separately, so I'm really sure I don't miss anything (or create an unreachable spot).

I'm also working on an Autarch and Farseer (both heavily converted).
The Autarch will look a lot like the Autarch on the cover of the codex, but with wings. I know a WJG is better than wings, but wings look way cooler ;).
The Farseer consists of parts stolen from Ahriman, Eldrad, a normal Farseer and lots of greenstuff.

I'll take some pics soon and try to revitalise this log!

Radium

So soon got more like soonish...

Update time! As usual, a rather small update, but an update still.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s303/Niels_fotos/Eldar%20v3/Foto0019.jpg

I've more or less finished one toe of the titan. Don't mind the ankle, as that will be covered by the leg.

Painting it this way is rather time consuming as it is all wetblended, so all further progress will be at a snail's pace I'm afraid.
I still want to tidy it up a little, paint the gems and then I can continue to the lower leg part.

I'm going to do his standing leg first, then continu down the other end (hip, then other leg top down) so I can glue whatever parts are done painting to the finished product immediately. Less handling is always better when dealing with this kind of model.

Hope you guys enjoy this first tiny part of my titan!
Let me know what you think. Also, let me know what you think of the picture quality, I took it with my new phone (samsung M8800).

Thank you, I hope the rest of the beast will be done in a reasonable timeframe (like 2 months or so...). It will be awesome when finished (I hope).

Furthermore, I got some questions on how I painted my Avengers, so I decided to post a small tutorial. I might even update it with pics when I have more avengers.

I started with a basecoat of regal blue.
Wash with a mixture of regal blue, midnight blue and a tiny drop of liche purple.
Repaint regal blue, avoinding the adges of the armour, so there is some depth in the amour.
Highlight with regal blue + increasing amounts of ice blue.
Final extreme highlight with ice blue and a drop of white.

I started the highlights with covering most of the armour (with very little ice blue in the mix) to just edges (almost pure ice blue).

The helmets are painted white, then washed with a very diluted grey.

Update!

In the end I decided I didn't like the way the foot turned out. So I decided to paint it over, and start the lower leg part at the same time.

Warning, the following is very much WIP:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s303/Niels_fotos/Forgeworld/Foto0024.jpg

You can't really tell what it looks like based on the photo, but it's all very much wetblended from a yellowish brown (halfway between snakebite and bleached bone) to a off white (between bone and white).
Now to retouch the foot some more, and finish the lower leg (including gems) and I can continue happily!

First of all, nice log you've got going here. It's always nice to get some comments from people who know what they are talking about, be it good or bad. I must admit that I've never looked at your army in detail before and now I see it looks a bit better than I gave you credit for. ;)

Second, I like the work you did on you titan, but when will you become man enough to tell the nice people on Warseer that you've started it over again? Will the "bad word" thing ever get finished? :D

I think we all hope to see some more pictures soon and with some more painted parts of Sir Phantom Titan on them.

But, thanks for all the great comments you guys (ja, jij ook Bas)! I will get back to painting saturday, as I don't really have time untill then. That will (hopefully) be the final time I start work on the titan, so I can finally make some progress and some day finish the thing!

Hi, I just found your thread and can say: amazing work.

When I saw your Avatar, I was wondering, wether it is a source lightning on the loincloth (or just a special blending). Because if it is, I would think of adding this OSL to your free hand as well.

I am looking forward to see your titan fully painted!

Good luck painting the Avatar, it's a tough model (I know, I have both FW variants ;)).

Thanks!
The loincloth on the avatar is actually blended from purple to orange, so no OSL. I'm still toying with the idea of adding OSL to the beast some day.
Anyway, thanks for the input! It's a good thing when people come up with constructive criticism.

Radium
26-01-2009, 18:03
The fire dragons were done using a basecoat of dark flesh, then using a mix of bestial brown, scab red and increasing amounts of fiery orange to highlight until you're almost up to pure fiery orange. Then do a final highlight with fiery orange a tiny bit of golden yellow.

About the avatars... I'm just nuts, and I really liked both models, so I bought both eventually :P.

HELP!

I've sort of put the titan on hold until I'm really sure what I want it to look like...
As of now I'm sort of considering going Ulthwé(ish). Something about the dark look really draws me in right now.

What should I do? Go for an Ulthwe-like army, or continue down the path already trodden? Please do not consider the army already painted as I'm doing an entirely new army again...

Providence
29-01-2009, 12:00
If it has nothing to do with the previous Iyanden army i would definately choose Ulthw'e they are very good looking models when painted well, which you can obviously do ;) I dunno maybe its just me but it gives me an excuse to use an Avatar and Eldrad and a horde of Aspects :D

Also the Titan images ive seen have mostly been of Ulthw'e and other Craftworlds just seem to look out of place on such a beautiful model.

Could you be talked out of changing the current theme?

I know it's easy to get bored with what you are doing, but a suggestion would be to maybe change it on a per-squad level? That's what I had to do with my necrons.

TheGeneral
29-01-2009, 20:08
If you like the dark look of Ulthwe you could change your own colour scheme to dark in using a dark blue for most parts of the titan (going from black to blue) and then add some yellowish details to it. In this way you would have a dark look, which would fit well in your army. Especially for such a great model as the titan I would think of altering your theme slightly anyway in order to let him stand out even more. I have done this in my eldar army quite often and it works well.

Azhrarn
29-01-2009, 20:21
I'd have to agree with TheGeneral. A deep blue and bone scheme might work very well on a model as big as that.

Dear Sir Cant-Make-Up-My-Mind ,

Since you use a lot of aspect warriors i think you shoul try a Biel-Tan spin-off with like a different shade of green. Like going from a shade darker than Scaly Green through Scaly Green up to what used to be Jade Green. Combined with black, grey and white. Using blue gems you get a cold colour scheme or use red for more warmth.

Of course this is an idea that i've wanted to try myself for years now but i lack the skills to execute it properly. :cries: I would like to see how it looks when a more skilfull painter like you has a go at it.

I think I've figured it out now. It'll be dark grey undersuits with dark yellow/bone armour plates and blue helmets/shoulder thingies. Sort of a comprimise between Ulthwé and what I did before.

I'm going to really go at it tomorrow, I've tested it a bit on the foot, and it seems pretty much to be the way to go with this colour scheme. I'll post some WIP's, although those won't be very interesting. It's basically a basecoat, then that basecoat blended to both shades and highlights :P.

Radium

what do you use to strip the paint off the models?

I use a simple liquid cleaning agent (groene zeep in dutch). Drop the model in water, add some of that stuff and let it soak for a couple of hours. That's usually enough for resin.
You can also use turpentine on resin models, just be sure to wash that crap off before you go on painting. At least, that has worked for me, I guess results may differ with different types of resin.

Groene zeep oplossing removes acrylic paint from (any) models? You mean the soap bars.. or liquid soap?

If so, I didn't know that!

Radium
10-02-2009, 19:14
The liquid stuff. I use Driehoek groene zeep:
http://i100.twenga.com/10/tp/83/08/5155374121145748308.png

On plastics it takes a good while to get everything off (like two weeks or so), and undercoat seems to be a bit of a problem. But I like the security of knowing I won't melt models or anything even if it just takes a bit longer.

UPDATE!

I started painting again, and this time it will be final, trust me ;). This will also be somewhat of a tutorial on the GW airspray thingy, as requested by some.
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s303/Niels_fotos/Forgeworld/Foto0034.jpg

It may be a bit hard to see, but it's basically a white undercoat followed by an airspray coat. Then touched up a bit here there where I managed to miss it with the spray. You can still see the sheen of the whet paint in the pic, so you know it's really a new paintjob ;).

As soon as the paint dries, I'll continue painting, and hopefully get some updates later today, or tomorrow.

Question to all you guys and gals though: should I go for a very light colour at the wings like blended to off-white; or more like what I did on the jetbikes, where the main colour sort of falls apart and some other (darker) colour comes through?

Radium
14-02-2009, 12:46
Yay, another update!

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s303/Niels_fotos/Forgeworld/Foto0035.jpg
I've filled in most of the lines, just to add some distinction between the armour plates. Those lines will be redone when the plates are almost done I guess.
I've also begun painting the piece behind the cockpits, between the wings. It takes the better part of forever to get it done, but I really like the way it's looking so far.

Enjoy!
Oh, and don't forget to give your opinion about what I should do with the wings, light or breaking up (see previous post).

Gropius

Hey Radium

How's the spraygun working for you? I think you should keep the Jetbike type colours for your Phoenix. I also have a question that i keep forgetting to ask you at the club so i'll post it here: we both use the same unit of Warp Spiders and Deep Strike them every battle without using the Surprise Assault Exarch Power, but i think we've been cheating a litle while doing that. Is that true or am i missing something (the reason why they are able to Deep Strike without the Surprise Assault Exarch Power) regarding the Warp Spiders?

When you´ve got the paint - water ratio figured out it's quite a handy tool. Basically you can spraypaint a model in any colour you like, and you get a nice coverage while at it. No crapping about with colours that are usually a pain to get an even coat with or anything.
In short: it works like a charm for me.
On the warp spider bit: see page 52, last part about jump infantry. All jump infantry may enter the game using deep strike. Surprise Assault is basically an artifact power from 4th ed, and su=erves no further purpose in the game. So no cheating for us ;).

As you can see I did a large portion of the first wing, and finished most of the center of the thing.
While I'll be painting the rest of the hull, I need to think what to do with the runes and gems. Either the runes will be red with grey/blue gems, or the runes will be grey with red gems. I too have just seen this log and read through it with awe. Some excellent work. I'm particularly impressed by the quality of the layering and highlighting, and the blending. The yellow on your earlier guardians and wraithlord was just superb.

Looking forward to seeing the Phoenix progress. As you asked for feedback, I would opt for blue gems, although I might be tempted to go with green, either for the gems or the runes. As for freehand, have you thought about combining or intertwining the runes into a sort of Celtic / Biel-tan (minus the thorns) swirling pattern?

Respect.

Thanks, I agree the first few things were a bit better than the later additions, but I had a major deadline coming up.
Green is absolutetly out of the question, as I'm going for a very subdued colour scheme, and green always seems to come out very bright when I paint it. But thanks for the input anyways!
On the freehand part, I might actually do something like that, I'm still toying with some vague ideas in my head.

And here is another update for all you guys!
Got some more work done on the phoenix, still a lot to do, but a large part of the hull is now more or less done. It needs a lot of small touch-ups, and the part in front of the cockpit needs to be done. Also, all plates on the edges that still look like crap now need to be done, but those will be another colour. Anyway, you get the idea.
Hope you like it!
And before anyone asks, all those different shades are really painted like that.

Oh I didnt mean to suggest that your later work wasnt as good as the early work - its all good man! I just wanted to point out I was really impressed with the yellow, as its such a hard colour (for me anyway) to get right.

I think Brother-Captain Antilles may be correct.

A deeper moss green or forest green may work very well as contrast, just don't highlight it up to the bright emerald green used on your scorpions, keep it shadowed a little. (or atleast, don't hit that bright green unless it's a thin final highlight, keep the body of the colour darker)

Radium, are you using a compressor for the airspray gun or the canned air?

I found I didnt have the best result the first time around with the air spray gun. It beaded up on me. But there were several variables...

It was cold, around 35 degrees, I didnt undercoat the model prior, I used a vallejo airbrush paint that I watered down and probably didnt need too.

So I will give it another go... but I am seriously thinking of plunking down the cash for a real airbrush if I continue to have issues with the gw spray gun.

Radium
18-02-2009, 14:39
I had some serious trouble with the airspray the first time I used it, you really need to get al your 'settings' right. I fumbled about with all things I could adjust and in the end I had a working airspray. You do need to remember it was designed primarily for foundation paints, so regular paints need a lot less thinning.
And I use GW canned air. I don't really have the money to buy a real compressor (all my money goes to new models basically...) and for what I want to do with it it's good enough.

Do i spot a Brightlance on that Wraithlord? Is it finaly starting to make sense to you to arm your Wraithlord with one just like mine? Nice repositioning on the leg by the way. Put up a picture of you test model for the new painting scheme because your stories are making me wanting to see it so i can judge if it looks any good (wich i guess it will ;)).

Yeah, I'm going for the exact same loadout on my new wraithlordS. Yes, I will have two of them.

*EDIT* I only now notice the rather low quality of the pic, I'll try and fix that later today.

Nice colours on the Dire Avenger! I think you should keep them that way.

So here I am again, this time with some better pics. You may also notice I painted the undersuit of the avenger in between these pics and the one in my previous post.
I'm still not sure whether or not to add battle damage to the armour plates. Might look cool, but it's not really 'eldar'. What do you guys think?

And the nice mailman brought this for me today:

Yes, that's about half an army worth of gaming peripherals.

You said it yourself, so don't do it. :skull:

I think, you should not do it, because I wanted to be the first to do it:evilgrin:

No, really, I think it would be absolutely great to have an Eldararmy with weathering!! Maybe not too many scratches on the armour, but mud from the battlefield and at least some scratches. Is it written ANYWHERE that Eldar armour has a lotus effect or does not get older...? (If so, I would appreciate a quote!)

Great to see this army coming along again!
