I have been looking at this old GI Joe whatsit and wondering what to do with it and decided to start a thread to get me going!
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn242/tanker49_2008/DSC00590_edited.jpg
First, tear it apart and clean it up and see what it is made of,
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn242/tanker49_2008/DSC00591_edited.jpg
So it is a start. Yes, it will be Orky and yes, it will take forever. Please try and contain your excitement!

Having opened my new 'Assault...' box I looted one of the 'copters and proceded to chop it up to make the pilot and ejection-seat for the new project. Now for those of you that do not think that the Orks would employ an ejection-seat, take note, it does carry war-heads, thereby making it more effective. (also the pilot is locked into it) First, a couple of shots with a coat of primer to get a sense of where it is at (his head is on a stick,to be painted separately).

They look really good, and a lot less fiddly than chopping off thin slices of plastic rod...

OK, here goes:
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn242/tanker49_2008/DSC00622_edited.jpg
I start with a syringe, the needle comes with the proper edge but any steel tube will do with a similar edge filed on it.
Take an appropriate size pin and CA and crimp it in the needle just proud of the end. This acts as a guide while the needle is turned. This is for pre-cast holes for the pin does not cut and the edge of the needle grooves the plastic.
A drill bit (or reshaped pin with a bit of a cutting edge) can also be used, this will cut the central hole and reshaping the edge of the needle will also cut the plastic.
The needle 'assembly' can be trimmed to length and used in a pin-vise. Different sized tubes for different sized circles.
A tube filed flat and 'teeth' cut into the edge will make a circle without the central hole but it is prone to wander when getting started.
There, I hope this casts some light on this 'trick'.

IncrediSteve
17-09-2008, 21:20
Aah, clever. I had a feeling it involved a syringe. Very straight lines you draw too, my shaky hands and I are jealous!

Not yet. I am bouncing around between a full blown two gun mount and a simple scarif-ring or maybe no gun at all and a search light instead or a co-ax mount. Meantime I'm just trying to pile on more detail to crank up the Orkiness.

it could use some serious fullblown gunmount. couple of rapid fire machineguns
like the ones that are on the bikes.
big ammo drums and ammobelts feeding into those machineguns.
you also could put a searchlight on it and make it a real ''night hunter bird of prey kinda thing''

It was a simple but tedious process. I cut the cases from 3/32" brass tube and stuffed 1/16" aluminum rod inside for the bullets. I am lucky to have a small lathe which I set up to cut the case shoulder and at the same time trim the case to length. I made a little jig to enable gluing the aluminum 'bullets' to the same depth in the cases and then some clipping and filing and presto! three hours later a pile of ammo! (I finished making the feed chute today but no pics yet) A by-product of the cutting process forms a small rim at the base of the case so I did not have to cut in an ejector groove (not that I am totally anal, just focussed!)

Some shots of the turret mounted. I decided not to go with a chute to catch the empties and just let them fly free in the wind, hence the cases stuck in various parts of the aircraft (I'm sure some of them would get through the prop). My ammo linking method did not stand the test of time so back to the drawing board on that.
