View Full Version : Hortwerth's venture into Iron Kingdoms - painting Warmachine and Hordes models

Hi all,

This might be my first thread outside the 40k section of the forums, but then again - I'm all 40k... Erm, that was until lately we discovered Warmachine in our gaming group! As the group is closely associeted with Spidergames.com indy, they quickly stocked on Warmachine and Hordes models, and soon from a system unknown in our region it became almost as large as 40k.

Anyways, as a painter hor hire I had a few Warmachine models I won in a painting contest held by a Dutch forum laying around unused - and these were mercenary warcaster Ashlynn D'Elyse, Mule heavy mercenary warjack and mercenary unit Steelhead Halberiders. This took the decision of what faction to choose off me, and boy I'm happy with Mercenaries!

The background and the models just keep amusing me, and where other gamers already have 500 -ish points of 2 or 3 different factions, I'm all Mercenaries.

Here are the first few models I painted. I went for a NMM technique as with the priming technique I devised it goes much faster than normally, and allows me to have at least one personal army painted to the top of my skills!

First up, I don't like the original Ashlynn model. I have it, I resculpted her face, I painted her, yet I still don't like her. You'll understand me better when I show you the replacement model I have for her: Werner Klocke's Pirate Queen. She has the same weapons and similar pose, but the model is 10000 times sweeter!

Plus, she comes with her own Reiholdt Gobber Speculator in the form of young boy (or halfling - I'm unsure on that):

And the original in case I go playing somewhere where they're stiffer on not using "counts as" models:

Then there's the Mule heavy warjack - it was the model I painted first, and it sort of defined the colourscheme for all the other models. I tried to make it look used and worn. I hated the ridiculous and ugly mace it carries, so I just removed it, leaving him with a bare fist.

His torso and right (empty) arm are magnetised for ease of transport

Then, there was the Steelhead Halberdiers unit. I tried to make them look like veterans, with different campaign markings painted on their armour...

On paper the unit seems overpriced and not really strong or durable, but I found them to be the most reliable piece in the Mercenary contract for me! they saved Ashlynn's @ss more than once!

There's more, I'll post more when I find time. Anyways, please feel free to express opinions, ask questions, etc.

You are truly a champion!

Looks great! I'd like to see more Warmachine/hordes painting logs.

This is the shot of the Mercenary warband as I had at the beginning - notice I added Gorman di Wulfe, Rogue Alchemist - I really love the model. I tried to emphasise his ability to disappear in plain sight with the colours I painted him in.

More angles of Gorman:

I just love the model, and the rules. Combined with one of Ashlynn's spells, her feat, Steelhead's and Mule's special rules, these models all play in a very subtle "denial" style. it's possible to orchestrate a situation when the enemy has to react prematurely or he will be on the receiving end, and then feint!

Then there's the second (light this time) Warjack: Vanguard. Notice it looks kind of strange compared to most of the other Warjacks. Its legs and arms are too long, it's body is shaped in a different way... It looks kind of awkward, but it grew on me. Then I found out that it's of Llaelese design (Llael is the homeland of Ashynn, occupied by Khador now), and then I painted the shield - when I put these stripes on I just loved this model.

Very nice there, but why does the Mule have no mace on it's right arm?

Try reading the text too, sometimes there's explaination of something shown in the pics :p

I hated the ridiculous and ugly mace it carries, so I just removed it, leaving him with a bare fist.

When it has to use the mace it means something went horribly wrong anyway.
