Ok, having never done a log before, or posted more than 1 picture of any of my minis, I thought it might be fun to break the ice and finally put up pictures of my diorama entries for the last 3 UK Golden Demons. Hope you like them.

First off is my 2006 entry "Leave No One Behind", Space Marines vs Tyranids, depicting a rescue of Uriel Ventris (NB this isnt a scene from the books or anything). This was my second foray into Golden Demon and was a finalist.

Last years entry, Orks and Imperial Guard will follow, along with this year's Dawn of War themed entry.

First, here's an initial WIP of the first diorama, showing for one the green-stuffed Rhino tracks where the tank will be rocked on its side by Mr Carnifex:-

And here's a couple of the finished pictures:-

Amazing. I just commented, but it didn't post!!!
I love the carnifex especially, it is a very good rendition (if not on purpose) of the cover of the Tyranid codex, where the Carni is destroying the rhino.
Seriously awesome stuff.

Truly awesome! I really love every part of this and your attention to detail is brilliant. It's very Black Hawk Down, and exceedingly cinematic. Great work!

Wow - thanks very much for all the comments guys, they really are appreciated.

@ Dictator - it is indeed inspired by the Tyranid codex, glad you recognised and liked it! Originally I was going to use a Land Raider, but it was too big, and I felt the Carnifex needed to dwarf the tank rather than the other way around. The hardest part was balancing the Rhino against a (at that time) blue-tacked Carnifex, to get the leg and talon positions right!

@ Elazar - I love Black Hawk Down, and that was also an inspiration for this. I always like to think that Marines would have the same mentality of not leaving anyone behind, even as in this case, a brother from another chapter.

@ Trizin - yeh, a lot of people like the Champion taking on the Carni. Opinion is usually divided as to who is in the ascendancy in this one, Marines or Tyranids?

@ Kain - thanks man!

Okay, will post up some pics of the 2007 diorama next.

Cheers!

Ok, here is the 2007 diorama. The painting is I think better than the 2006 entry, but there is less "going on", as I wanted to go for a little humour instead. This one didnt make the cut unfortunately.

I had an idea of an Ork salvage team looting a crashed shuttle, who happen across a small Imperial Guard squad. The Orks decide to "salvage" the Guardsman instead, hence the cooking pot and one chap up a tree. All is going well, until Da Boss arrives that is...

And now we come to this year's Golden Demon entry, themed around elements from the Dawn of War intro sequence. I hope you can recognise some of those elements.

I'm fairly pleased with this one, and was just a little (!) disappointed that it didnt make the cut, particularly as I like to think that my painting has come on in the last couple of years. Ok, I dont hold any delusions that I can walk away with a Demon, but hey one lives in hope.

Last year was my first foray into painting Orks, and I really enjoy them. This year's new thing was object source lighting for the burna boy-marine confronation, hope you like it.

If any of you are in the Warwickshire area, the diorama is now in the cabinet in the Leamington store.

Here's the wide shots first, taken from each side, then I'll post some close ups.

One more set to come, namely the burna boy.

27-09-2008, 15:47
And last but by no means least, is the happiest chap of all:-

There all pretty darn good :) I really like the Fex tipping over the Rhino in the first one.

Right question time. I am thinking of creating a diorama, purely for fun more then anything, and was wondering how you personally go about it. Do you plan out each detail at the beginning or do you just let it form as you go along?

Hi Casper, and thanks for the comment.

I tend to plan it out and work roughly to that plan, although inspiration should in my view always take precedence. Have a rough idea of where you want to get to, and you'll have new ideas as you go along.

Hope that helps,

While it's easy to understand why *some*;) don't make the cut, I imagine the competition had to have been pretty stiff for these to have not made it...:(

Excellent work all around...especially the inspiration for improvements on one I'm working on. Not that it will ever be GD worthy (to say nothing of the transport distance;)) but it's fun nonetheless. :D

I really like the first two dioramas, they are amazing!
The DoW diorama, on the other hand, requires you to have seen the introduction movie, otherwise it's just a lot of random blood ravens and orks fighting in a relatively barren area. I can really see the similarities, but I don't think it can carry itself on just recognition.
It's not about the way you paint or anything like that, it's just that I think it looks cluttered and random.
I hope I haven't crushed your spirit, 'cause I really like what you do. I just wanted to give some constructive criticism.

Thanks very much Warhound. I will certainly put up whatever diorama I do for next year, now that I've finally learned how to put photos up. Not got anything sorted yet, although I do have one idea in the works...

Thanks Starlight, that makes me feel a little better. I didnt really have a good chance to have a look at the finalists or the winners on the day (too crowded around the cabinets), so will have to wait for the pictures on GW's site.

"Fun" is indeed the best reason for doing any diorama in my opinion. I love having the opportunity to tell a little story that a diorama presents. I'm also glad I've provided you with some inspiration :)

Good work you can clearly see you have progressed painting wise over the last few years.

Thanks for your comment Coolhand, its appreciated and nice when someone gives that kind of praise

Ha ha, glad you liked it. It actually turned out different to my initial sculpting attempt, which ended up looking fairly bad! I'm pleased with the lighting paint effect, which had scared me a little before trying it out. Drybrushing FTW!

Thanks Okinava. Hey no worries, and I take your point re the DoW diorama. Unfortunately, photos tend to make it look more cluttered than it actually is. Most of the people who've seen it tend to say "ooh Dawn of War" straight away, so I guess I was kind of assuming that people would recognise it, but you make a valid point which I take on board.

Once again, thanks to all who've commented - they are appreciated :D

all very nice! the first one is my favorite just because it is so epic,a fierce counter assault to rescue an imperial hero against such odds. And whoever said very black hawk down esque... YES!!!... that explains it just right, also love the messages on the front.

Brother-Captain Antilles
12-10-2009, 20:41
Ok, so its been a while since I've posted in my diorama thread, well a whole year to be exact (thanks for the post talon216 BTW), but its that time again. GD UK 2009 is now over and done with; another year, another diorama, and I'm pleased to say, my second Finalist :). Congrats to the winners, wherever you are.

I'm quite fond of "last stands", so I thought I would do another one, this time with my favourite First Founding Chapter, the Imperial Fists. I deliberately left the Marines' enemy out of the diorama to allow the viewer to wonder who is attacking what's left of this command squad. This was my first real attempt with the dreaded yellow, and my first attempt with the armour chipping paint effect.

Ok here goes, main shots first, then I'll post close ups.

I love all these dioramas, its the only category I ever enter at golden daemon so its great to have some inspiration. What i like most about this log is that you can really see progression, the latest diorama in particular stands out as a massive improvement in painting ability in only a years time. One day i will be able to paint yellow like that, you mark my words.

Ha, thanks mate. The DoW one was certainly a lot of fun to make, probably the most enjoyable one to date actually. I love that burna boy vs heavy bolter moment from the intro scene and just had to include it.

Not sure about UnDave, who is he? There has in any event been a bit of a staff change around at GW Leam in recent times. Re the store, for anyone who wants to see it, the diorama is in the window there now.

If I may, your painting skills are very good and vivid if that's the right word. Nice reds and the Orks look nice- I DO like the humor in that second diorama! It's the craning necks on the boyz made me laugh for some reason!

You're most welcome sir, and thank you for the kind words.

Glad you enjoyed the one with the Ork 'salvage' team. Although when I look at it now, it is a little 'static', it does still make me smile. Orks are just so much fun to work with and paint (although I dont think I could bring myself to do a full army - too much green skin! :p).
