Mordheim, one of GW's Specialist Games, uses warbands. Check it out. "mordheim wiki" should be your Google.

Other than that, I guess it's just a generic term for a small group of soldiers/fighters.

No, not at all.
'Warbands' are some extra rules (though not officially legal) GW gave us to play games at 200-500 points.
Can be really fun.
I'll see if I can find them for you...

Seems they don't publish them any longer.
Anyway, it boiled down to allowing smaller units, less heroes and items, and some army-specific rules.
Probably, if you're interested, someone can post the PDF file here.

Were those the Border Patrol rules from the 6th Ed book, or am I confusing it with something else?

They were lots of fun if you can find them.

Warbands allow small unit combats with anywhere from 200-500 points. Great way to see if you like the way an army feels small scale since your minimum unit sizes are 3 infantry, 2 cavalry and single anything larger. We have found that they really help you to learn the tactical uses of your core troops since you only get 1 special and 1 rare (or 2 special and 0 rare) choices. Plus, the games usually last about an hour so you can throw down several games in an evening. I highly recommend this variety.

You can play Warabands with 1-199, but then it's pretty much Skirmish.

There were three White Dwarf issues in a row that supplied them and I'm sure you can download them off the GW site.

They were not border patrol.
Indeed they featured in White Dwarf, however since then a new 7th edition was published only on the web.

I just don't know where they put it? Can't find it on both the UK and US site...

I got the file here. Its too big for an attachment on warseer, but if you PM me I can mail it to you, if you like.
