so have a few extra dwarf models after my chaos dwarf amy so figured would try and use them to do squat conversions.

the painting and conversion were pretty quickly done but just to show a general idea what I'm aiming for (definitly need to darken that orange alot). Though think my guy still looks too much from fantasy so any suggestions to make it more sci fi (espically how to modify the guns).

Yup, definately too Fantasy. Actually, Squats look quite different to WHFB Dwarfs. For once, he shouldn't be wearing this armoured skirt thing but pants. Then, the helmet needs to be way different as well as the gun (as you pointed out). So I'd suggest to get a box of Cadians. The gun itself can't be modified. Get some Lasguns and some Bolters.

It's quite difficult to convert Dwarfs to proper Squats; it's not something you just make of your Dwarfs bitzbox just like that. I suggest you have a close look at various pictures of Squats (pictures published by GW) and then decide what you need. Also, do a forums search; there has been a little Squat fad about two years ago IIRC and the threads still should be there. It will probably be more helpful than people posting their suggestions here.

Good luck with your project. It's not easy, it can be done very, very well and the result could be really inspiring and honoring the history of 40k and the Squats so plan ahead and plan well.

I want to stick to GW models though so that my army (while questionable) is legal. Plus not trying to recreate squats just create them (don't see any easy way to make pants with GW dwarfs).

helmet shouldn't be too hard, make it more rounded maybe with an antenna or something

:D I'm afraid it's harder to make a proper army than taking it's fantasy equivalent, make it rounder and sticking an antenna to it.

Seriously, it's hard to base a squad in a WHFB Dwarf really. Of course you can do it but most of the time it will look like a Thunderer or Clan Warrior with a Lasgun in his hands. Did you do the forums search yet? This is not an easy project, you should do research and planning and you should consider that you will have to pay extra cash for this army.

I don't mean to be discouraging or to put you down but I think that doing a 40k army without any miniature support is a serious and not easily done thing and it would be a pity if it would be done without the full enthusiasm and ressources it requires since then it would not turn out to be very rewarding.

Search results for Squats threads in M,P&T (http://warseer.com/forums/search.php?searchid=995480)

I think that this would be a good start to do research.

hmm should have extended my search beyond the sci fi part. looks like most people use outside models to do squats =(

Are you sure you are familiar with the GW model ranges? From what I have seen in the several threads I browsed, I haven't seen any third-company models used apart from Olly's Miniature's Scrunts but they weren't used for conversions.
