So this might seem like kind of a dumb question but what exactly is the purpose of magical attacks? I understand that there are some different things that don't work against magical attacks, such as the forest spirit ward save but aside from this is there any benefit to having magical attacks?

As you said in your post, they are good vs things that don't get saves vs them...;)

Or things that can only be hurt by magical attacks.

But no, in general being a magic attack doesn't actually do anything. It's the models being hit by magical attacks that will have a special rule saying if it does anything special.

Against ethereal models for example, its quite nice to have magical attacks. Otherwise it is difficult to hurt them (except for CR ofcourse).

The only benefit of magic attacks is against things that don't like them. Against 98% of all things you will come up against in warhammer, having magical attacks won't matter one way or the other.

Well, not entirely true... Since a magic weapon often has a lot of nice bonusses. Being magical is what they are, having extra bonusses is what the magic does. Being magical also gives some advantages in itself.

You guys mentioned a few things I forgot about such as the ethereal models, thanks!

So what exactly counts as magic attacks? If you simply have a magical weapon does that mean the attacks are magical, or does it have to say that it's magical?

If it's a magic weapon it have magic attacks.

useless now against anything but ethereal. Daemons used to not get ward saves against it.

Forest spirits...

The demons used to be so underpowered with those fake ward saves and whole unit wipeouts, but changing it back would balance the new book out a little better...

Magic is a lot like Flaming that way... Useless on its own, until you run into someone that is specifically vulnerable to it.

And than your happy to have it!

@ Sneroplex:
AFAIK, attacks made by magic items, spells and anything that has the rule 'magic attacks' are magic.

Flaming = what people do in the Internet.

Then we of course have the age old debate of which attacks should really be flaming attacks in the first place.

A magic weapon/item from your armory section that does damage does magical attacks. Things like ensorcelled weapons, daemon attacks, etc that say they do magical attacks also do magical attacks. Magical attacks are only good for things like as stated above, same for fire-based/flaming attacks. As for what exactly is flaming (or lightning, for Dragon Ogres), is always up for debate to some extent.

Flaming is only an issue because GW is unable to answer questions about flaming in their FAQ's. Like the flame cannon, or salamanders, or soulfire.

Lightning is much less of a problem, because it is less common, and because it does not have its own rule so we are required to use our own judgment.

Tell that to someone playing against Dragon Ogres (or is it Shaggoths?)

All I know is that it would be nice, especially now that trolls can be used in WoC armies, exactly what all current flaming and lightning attacks are. I'm sure that Tomb Kings and O&G players have wanted these for sometime.
