Hi all, I've been a long time member of this forum hiding in the shadows trying to learn all I can about WHFB. I have the rule book and now I'm looking to start an army of my own. The sort of army I'd like to play would be to have elite troops that can take on many times their number and prevail. I know this is probably asking for the perfect army which I'm sure doesn't exsist in this game :p

Model-wise I'm quite taken to the forthcoming 'Warriors of Chaos' but I've been reading a lot of bad things about them and it's a little offputting, as I'm willing to learn this game and take losses but I don't want to have a hard time learning if you get me?

This also brings me to 'High Elves' I love how they are portrayed in the artwork but the models do not do them justice (I'm speaking of the Spearelves and Swordmasters) is there a chance these models will be re-done?

But back to my original question. I'm looking for an 'elite' type army that will be forgiving while helping me learn, can any of you point me in the right direction?

Thankyou for you time :)

Hey, let me just say Warriors of Chaos sound exactly like what you are looking for, they lack a shooting phase however for a beginner you would not want to be working with artillery anyway. Shooting troops are not THAT big a loss for a first army and if you like the game you will most likely move on to something else which fills the shortcomings of Chaos in the shooting phase.

All that said, I do not want you to get the wrong idea about chaos it is a very nice army with great variety.

Do not worry about the bad things you have been hearing about the book, the negativity has come mainly from veterans of the army who happen to be unhappy with certain changes made in this edition (I fall among these people) however I do believe the book is sound for anyone just getting into Chaos.

Honestly the fact you like the models and the fact nothing else fits your asking requirements better.

I agree about high elves they would be a good choice but I have problems with their models too so I'd stay away from them. They will not be getting the bad models redone anytime soon as they just enjoyed a new book recently.

IF you are willing to drop your requirement of "forgiving" you could then look into Dark Elves, they are a finesse force, a scalpel rather then the club that is Chaos. But they can fulfill your elite army requirement and seeing as they are the last release before Chaos they are very fresh new and good to get into right now. I would say you're choice falls between those two right now, just giving you a heads up that Dark Elves require a different brand of skill to use and may be more challenging for a beginner.

Hope that helps and good luck also feel free to PM me Chaos questions if they become your choice =), have lots of fun.

Yes, warriors of chaos is a great book and army. I personally like it better than hordes in some ways. Everyone on Warseer is criticizing it, yet half of them haven't even read the book. I have, and I like it quite a bit.

As you like the models for the WoC thats reason enought to start to play with them. Their new army book sounds like a good one, just ignore all the whining.

WoC probably is the best for you now, but a couple of other alternatives to consider are Bretonians and Lizardmen

The Brets have about the best heavy cavalry.

Lizardmen currently rely on fast skirmishing infantry as the saurus their ranked melee specialists are overpriced, but the rumours about the Lizardmen saurus being fixed in new book (due February) mean that it may meet your current needs, plus be able to grow with you as you develop more tactical skill. And it has lots of dinoaurs...

I would also put my vote in for Warriors of Chaos. From what I understand of the new book (for I don't have it yet, but I've read my local store's copy) there is a lot of variation that you can use when building your lists, and if you're willing to spend the $ you can have armies ranging from lots of monsters, to lots of basic infantry. The sky is the limit. And who doesn't like crushing your opponent in the CC phase with vastly superior troops?
Bretonians are another good choice though, although if you like magic, from my experience with them, their magic is kind of weak. But who needs it when your entire army is heavy cavalry?

I've had a good look through all the different armies and tried to find out a bit on each of them on different forums and I think I do have my heart set on the 'Warriors of Chaos' it's the models if anything that grab me, I love thier imagery :D

Thankyou for the responses
