Hi folks!

Some of you might have noticed I've not updated my 40k log in a while. The main culprit for that is the fact that Urban War has really kicked off in our area recently, so I've been putting together stuff for that to the exclusion of everything else.

For those who haven't heard of this great game, Urban War is a sci-fi skirmish game by Urban Mammoth (http://www.urbanmammoth.com/), played with "strike-teams" of around 8-12 models a side in standard-sized games. In contrast to 40k's turn system, in Urban War each player takes it in turn to activate one model at a time, which means all players (the game is designed to cope with 3 or more players as easily as just 2) are much more involved through the whole turn. The sequence in which they are activated depends on who has initiative (dice-off at the start of the turn) and which orders they were assigned at the beginning of the turn. All models under "Lock-fire" orders must wait until all those with "Snap-fire" orders have been activated in order to do anything, but "Snap-fire" actions tend to have penalties (less accurate shooting for example). There are also next to no armour saves, making cover absolutely crucial. I could go on and on... suppressive fire, morale, overwatch etc... suffice to say I enjoy the game a lot more than 40k. It's much cheaper to get started as well. The rulebook contains all the faction rules (and if you don't want to buy the hard copy you can download it for just 1!) and a basic 18 strike team is all you need to play. I suppose what helped matters is that two of the Urban Mammoth crew paid a visit to our club. They put on some demo games, gave out free stuff, and we got a good long chat about things that are in the pipeline for the game. All of which is why it's doing so well in this area right now.

Anyway, before I start sounding like a salesman, I'll get on to what I'm doing. I'm aiming to have strike-teams for most factions, if not all. And given that it would be cheaper than a whole 40k army, I reckon it should be easy enough. My primary faction is the Viridians, so I'll be expanding on them a little more than the others. I'll also be putting together plenty of terrain because in this game you need tonnes of the stuff. Luckily Urban Mammoth have an affordable range of industrial-ish platform kits (of which I have a few already) so that'll be a piece of cake. The great thing about these kits is that you can take them apart and reassemble them as you please, so it's much easier to get some diversity and avoid playing with the same old buildings every time.

Now, on to the pictures. I picked up two boxes of Viridian Colonial Marines and a box of Viridian Snipers at the Claymore show in Edinburgh back in August (they were doing 3 for 2 on boxes) and painted some of 'em up. Here's the resulting strike-team:

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a321/eek_107/Urban%20War/StrikeTeam170.jpg

This is basically the same strike-team that you get with the Viridian starter set, I just switched out a couple of the models. Both the sniper and the front left marine are from other sets.

Here's one of my favourite minis from their range (also my first attempt at painting eyes for several years):

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a321/eek_107/Urban%20War/sniper2.jpg

C&C is appreciated. :)

Right, that's what I have, what's next? Well, I picked up a whole stack of goodies at the Targe wargames show last week, and on the painting table right now are my Syntha strike-team. They just need to be based and varnished and they're good to go. After them I have both VASA and Gladiator starter teams that need to be painted, but I still haven't decided which to do first. Probably Gladiators, since we already have two VASA players at the club. I'm also painting up one of the several building kits that I picked up at the show (again with the 3 for 2 deal). So next update will have some Syntha goodness at the very least.

Take care!

Nice stuff, post a few more pics of them! I went in late to Claymore and there were no Viridians left, sigh.

I like urban war models and discovered them on the net a few weeks ago, not into the game that much but I have bought a few and they make up the majority of my necromunda gang :D.

Wow! These are some very nice miniatures! And after checking out the page, im even more chuffed! I used to love Necromunda back in the days, and although the rules still are pretty valid, the miniatures are starting to feel old and its hard to build stuff from the 40k range since they dont overlap that well.

heh... that was probably my fault, sorry! :p

Yeah, the whole range is pretty cool. It's what got me interested in the game to begin with.

Love those Viridian models!

Thanks!

I started off thinking about using them for an IG army when I first saw them, but then I got hooked on the UW rules instead. I hope they do some sort of campaign system for it.

Anyway, took some more snaps this morning. First, some close-ups of my Viridians here (http://s14.photobucket.com/albums/a321/eek_107/Urban%20War/Viridians/). They look a little shinier than I thought... I'll have to give them another coat of matt varnish sometime. There's a couple of extra marines in there that aren't in my strike-team.

Next, a little peek at the building in progress:

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a321/eek_107/Urban%20War/WIPbuilding1.jpg

I basically just sprayed it with a metallic basecoat and then painted on some dip, both from the Army Painter. A nice quick way to get through the 5 boxes I got. Each box has 12 sprues of components on it so there's a lot to get through! I'll take some pictures of a couple of assembled buildings later.

Finally, a WIP shot of one of my Syntha Androsynths:

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a321/eek_107/Urban%20War/Syntha/AndrosynthWIP.jpg

Just to put the finishing touches on the base and give it a few coats of varnish.

Again, thanks for looking, and all comments are welcome!

Looking good, do these models come in plastic or metal? Also how easy are they for converting and stuff?

Lord Malorne

Metal, I found them very easy to convert for my necromunda needs, they are either slightly smaller or slightly larger (or same size) as GW models, varying from model to model, so just having people in al shapes and sizes not all the exact same height ;).

All metal, but they're pretty easy to convert. The metal seems slightly softer than GW's so it's easier to cut, and many of them are multi-part.

You're in luck, I just finished my Syntha strike-team. Group shot:

When I got my first building set back in August, I decided to clip it all off the sprues before painting it... which in hindsight probably wasn't such a good idea. However, it did give us some more interesting terrain for our games. Here's how they're looking just now:

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a321/eek_107/Urban%20War/WIPbuildings.jpg

I managed to get both of them out of the one kit, with this much left over:

Pretty good for 13 I'd say.

Comments are welcomed as always. :)

I like your clean style of painting, simple but effective looking. The models look pretty cool for the most part, Pointman & the crouching Viridian sniper especially, but there is something about a few of them that just makes me think they could be a little better sculpted...I'm not sure what though...

Great log, keep em coming!

Thanks! I agree, the sculpts do tend to be a bit hit and miss. Having said that the "misses" are starting to grow on me a bit.

Hey folks!

I took a break from painting Urban War stuff to get my Sallies done (as you'll know if you've been reading my other log). However, with the Urbanisation tournament in Edinburgh less than three weeks away, I figured I'd better paint up my force and get some practice games in. The painting score for the tournament is "all or nothing" for 20% of the maximum points available, and let's face it I'll probably be needing the points!

So I knuckled down this week and now I have enough to test out a few different 300pt lists. The new stuff:

HMG Team
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a321/eek_107/Urban%20War/Viridians/HMGTeam1.jpg

Shock Marines
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a321/eek_107/Urban%20War/Viridians/ShockMarine1.jpg
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a321/eek_107/Urban%20War/Viridians/ShockMarine2.jpg

Special Forces
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a321/eek_107/Urban%20War/Viridians/SpecialForces1.jpg

I know I'll definitely be using my Shock Marines and at least one sniper, as well as my sergeant (who seems to perform really well most games) and the mandatory 4 marines. It'll take some testing to see what else I'll need though.

As always, comments are welcomed!

those shock marines look great, very clean.

Is there a big scene for UW in Edinborough? Thats where Urban Mammoth are based isnt it?

Thanks!

I think there's quite a decent player base there if they're able to host an event like that. I'm not entirely sure though - I live quite far from there.

Just stumbled onto this blog and things look great. Kinda makes me a little nostalgic, as the first model I painted up for 40K was a Tactical Androsynth (who still leads my army from time to time). Having never played the game, I cannot comment on Urban War, but I will say that Urban Mammoth makes some kick @$$ models, and they fit really well with GW stuff. I have quite a few of their models in my Blood Pact force and am planning on adding more.

Hi folks!

First of all, I'd like to report that Urbanisation was a great success, and a good day out for everyone. I've written up a report of my day here (http://eeksimplethings.blogspot.com/), complete with pictures of my games.

Now, on to the newly painted stuff.

Viridian Urban Interdict

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a321/eek_107/Urban%20War/Viridians/Interdict1.jpg

I haven't had much chance to use him in battle yet, but I like the idea of how they work. They're basically a "deep strike" unit, good for taking out those pesky indirect units and weapon teams (which my regular opponents are starting to field more often).

Gladiator Strike-team

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a321/eek_107/Urban%20War/Gladiators/170a.jpg
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a321/eek_107/Urban%20War/Gladiators/170b.jpg

One of the starter strike-teams. Gladiators specialise in close combat and short range firepower. A particular favourite is the Myrmillo (crazy flamethrower dude). Everyone gets nervous with a flamethrower on the table - the template is considerably larger than 40k's version.

Next up will be my VASA starter strike-team. I've always had a soft spot for them, but with two other VASA players in the club, I held off on getting them until I had a few other strike-teams first.

Wow those models are actually pretty nifty looking... I always thought they'd be quite boring. I own several of the scenerysets, though everything went into Cities of Death or Necromunda projects for me.

Good going!

I can't recommend the game enough. Cheap to start, easy to learn, and the ruleset works brilliantly.
