Hey everybody,

I have been lurking around on Warseer for quite a while now, but haven't really posted much.

I thought I should remedy that by starting some sort of project log, which will also hopefully motivate me to get some painting done!

I have been playing 40k for about 20 odd years but still don't actually have a finished army!

Trouble is I have a short attention span, and I'm a slow painter so I tend to get about two thirds of the way through something and then see something else and think "ooh shiny..." and that's why nothing gets finished!

So no more rambling and on to what I'm working on at the moment.

I unfortunately only have one figure to show you at the moment, but have more to follow shortly.

This is the beginnings of my Black Templar army. I have also started some Terminators and a Dreadnought.

This guy is not quite finished, but not far to go. I have to admit that I am not a huge fan of the plastic marine scouts, and so wanted to get this guy done to see how they painted up, and apart from a couple of things here and there I am pretty happy with him.

I also have a fairly substantial (but of course unfinished! :)) Imperial Guard army which I am hoping to get some decent photos of too, so I'll post those up at some point.

Hey guys,

First of all a big cheers for all the positive comments so far, it has inspired to me to get a bit more painting done.

Unfortunately though I am still having problems getting pics from my camera to the computer, so once again not a whole load of stuff to put up, but hopefully I will have some more to upload tomorrow.

So here is one of my Terminators that I am working on.

Assault Canon Terminator

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff258/geekfilth/untitled.jpg

As always not finished yet, but he's getting there. I have to say that I struggle a bit with freehand, so the name plates / scroll are a bit messy. Anyone got any tips on this? Mine always look like they have been written by a three year old! :)

And for some reason my Golds look too shiny on these guys so I may have to dull it down a bit.

Dreadnought

And then this chap, who I have just started. The arms were just whacked on for the photo and haven't been started, or even stuck on for that matter.

This army is gonna be the sex when it's done. Really, really great painting there! I'd be tempted to add a little weathering though. I think it would compliment the ultra clean painting style very nicely.

Again, lovely smooth painting. My only comment would be that the terminator and dread look a little devoid of any extra markings or litanies. Some campaign badges or something would really add some visual interest to areas such as the terminators power fist arm.

Otherwise super stuff, looking forward to more.

Cheers,

Hey guys, cheers for all the feedback so far, it is getting me off my backside and inspiring me to get more done! :)

I definitely agree now that the Terminators and the Dread need some litanies / campaign markings. I hadn't really noticed the big empty areas before now but knew something was missing and this has solved it.

I am going to try my hand at some Templar crosses on the powerfists and need to think of something for the Dread's other leg. I thought about simply "TEMPLARS" but don't know if that would be a bit naff, and I must admit I am not great at freehanding lettering.

Or my Crusade Badge is a red and white bifurcated shield with a black Templar Cross in the middle, so may try that, although the Dread already has this on its sarcophogas.

I will also try some writing on the armour, maybe here and there so as not to overdo it.

And weathering the Dread is a good plan too, although I will keep this to a minimum as I am not a big fan of overly battle damaged figures. I reckon marines would keep their stuff mint! (I have a touch of OCD IRL and reckon Astartes would be the same!)

So what have I been up to? Well not really a lot to be honest. Have done some more termis, but think maybe I am rushing them a bit as looking at the photos they look a bit messy.

So I'm just gonna put this pic up for today and go back tomorrow and do some tidying up.

Terminator Sergeant

This guy is coming along, just need to do more work to his banner (which you can't see in this pic) and go back and redo his chest thingy. As always with my stuff he is by no means finished though, LOL! ;)

Hey guys,

I thought whilst I had access to the computer and had my camera with me I would show you some of the other stuff I have been working on which is not Marine related.

For the last four years or so I have been working on a Cadian Imperial Guard army. The Guard is probably my first love as far as 40K is concerned, and as someone on another forum quite rightly pointed out "You never finish the Guard".

And seeing as how I never finish anything anyway this was probably the worst army for me to pick (although I do have a desire to start a Tyranid army - but that would just be daft!).

So as ever none of this is finished, but I do have a 1500pt army that I can at least play with.

Also as I started some of these guys a while ago the painting is a bit scruffy here and there, but I'm pleased with them overall.

And my version of a Ratling sniper. I converted this up as I hate the current models, but love the unit itself.

Nothing too fancy here, made the body shorter by removing the belt from the upper torso, which also accentuated the models hips making it look more feminine. Didn't bother with breasts as I am of the opinion that they wouldn't show under the body armour.

Then added a head form Copplestone casting's future wars series and she was good to go. However she does still have "man hands"! :)

This is all really clean and nice painting. Good depth and highlighting too. I'm guessing you've had some practice, even though you say you've never finished anything properly.
I'm sorry if I'm ranting on your thread but since you really want engouragement finishing a whole army and I think that army, when finished, will look excellent with your apparent painting skills ... well .... here's my input!
On finishing armies:
I was also in the hobby for a long time in the late 80's and 90's, painting a mini here and there but without any direction. When I got back in a year ago I really set my mind on painting a whole army, not just single minis. It really took a diferent mind-set. I vowed not to play games with unpainted minis, so if I wanted to play I'd have to finish up first. It's good to have a buddy with a similar goal so you can play at the point level you've both reached. I also played some Combat Patrol tourneys, trying to bring a differnet list each time, and hoping to win best painted sometime, so they'd better be finished!
More importantly I started batches of 5 or more models and didn't allow myself to assemble or buy anything new until I'd finished that batch. And every little moment of painting gets you a step closer to the goal. If your paints and models are on the desk and you have 15 minutes to spare, you can use that, especially if you're a slow painter or, like me, have the attention span of a monkey.
On freehand lettering
On places small enough, scribbling unreadable dots and lines will often look better than trying to make actual letters. For bigger areas, if you just write, it'll often look too orky, not majestic enough for Black Templars. What I've done is to write it up in a computer, find some gothic font that I like and then imagine how it'll fit on the area. Then I look at the computer image and try to replicate it, as an image, rather than as letters, consentrating more on getting the curves right, than getting the letters readable. It gives a better feel IMHO.

I really like the minis you've posted so far and I hope you can muster up the consentration to take it all the way!

Hey Guys,

So in classic StraightSilver style I have once again got sidetracked and have started yet another new project....

However I am hoping that this time I will actually be able to keep on track and get stuff finished, as I have volunteered to take part in a Tale of Four gamers Challenge.

The idea is to paint 250 points a month for six months so that I can have a finished 1500 point army at the end.

For reasons I myself don't understand this means I have started a 2nd Company Ultramarines army, and have already finished my first squad.

These guys took me a week to assemble and paint which is much quicker than I usually do things although this means that they are not up to what I would consider my best. However they are at least finished, and I have to consider that if I want to play with a fully painted game legal army then I will have to speed up my painting.

So here's the first squad of the new army:

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff258/geekfilth/scouts005-1.jpg

Next up will be a Marine Tactical Squad with Rhino Transport, which should be finished in two weeks if I am to keep to my schedule.

T_55

Yours scouts are really good.

You should do a scout army!

However i do like the Guardsmen Veteran Sergeant with the gas mask, your painting is great!

StraightSilver
12-01-2009, 16:14
Cheers T_55, yeah I love the Vet Sarge with the gas mask, although I wish I had posed that Boltgun differently now, I never realised just how BIG it looks until I saw the photos...

And I am seriously considering an all Scout Marine army. The only thing stopping me at the moment is the lack of variety and quality of the plastics, but if I can get hold of some of the old metal ones or source some decent replacement heads I may give it a go.

Ok so in terms of painting progress, I have managed to get some stuff done this week. I have assembled a 5 man tactical squad plus a Rhino transport for them, and have started painting them up.

However for some reason despite painting solidly for an entire weekend I have very little to show for my efforts so far. I have base coloured the Tac Marines and painted up this one to work out the colours I will be using:

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff258/geekfilth/NewImage.jpg

Because I am having to work to a pretty strict schedule with these guys as well as fit in work etc I am not getting to spend as much time as I normally would on them. I would have spent more time neatening up the highlighting on the armour, and would have spent more time on the bases too.

However for a few hours work I think he turned out ok, and if I can get one a day painted then I will be on track to finish this month's Marines on time.

StraightSilver
28-01-2009, 15:33
Hey guys, sorry for the double post, hope that's ok?

I have a little bit of progress to show.

I am slowly getting through my 250 points a month (well I've managed one month so far....) and this is the last bit of it.

So to add to my 5 man Scout squad I have been working on a 5 man Tactical Squad with Rhino transport.

I just have to glue on the bolters to the marines and touch them up here and there and then finish off the Rhino, but they're about 90% finished.

Squad and their rhino look very good. Nice and clean painting and good layering all over.
Maybe the white tactical arrow on the rhino could use another pass of white though. Just cause you can see some brush strokes in it.
You worte that the rhino's not finished yet so that's probably it. I like the edge highlights on the rhino though!

@Solun Decius: Cheers, I am pretty chuffed with how these guys turned out actually as they have been done quite quickly (by my standards), but I think maybe I am just getting quicker because I am doing a lot more painting.

The Rhino is still not quite finished, and to be honest the arrow on the top was giving me a bit of a headache so I have left it for no and plan to have another go at it tonight. I have painted it in roughly in Fortress grey and am going to go over it with a lighter grey and then white, but I can't seem to get the consistency of the paint right, it's either too thin or too thick....

@daemonkin: Cheers, I pretty much followed the codex with these guys.

Armour:

Black undercoat.
All armour painted Regal Blue.
Armour painted Ultramarines blue leaving regal blue in recesses.
Thin Regal Blue wash applied tp joints etc to blend two blues together.
Ultramarines blue highlighted by adding skull white.

Gold.

Mithril Silver applied to all gold areas first to act as basecoat for gold.
Shining Gold applied to all gold areas.
Ogryn Flesh Wash applied all over.
Devlan Mud Wash in lowest recesses.
Reapply Shining Gold to tidy up washes.
50:50 mix of Shining and Burnished Gold uses as highlight.
Fine edge highlight of straight Mithril Silver

Lenses.

Basecoat 50:50 mix of Blood Red and Chaos Black.
Apply lighter mix of this colour by adding more blood red in one corner, and darker mix by adding more Chaos Black in opposite corner.
Highlight lighter corner with mix of Blood Red and Bleached Bone and add spots of light using Skull white.

Hope that helps.

Cheers for looking guys.

Hey everyone, sorry for the bump but I have some progress to my Ultramarines so I hope this is ok.

Unfortunately though things have been a bit slow during the month of Feb/March. My girlfriend unfortunately has been very ill and that has meant that my painting has had to take a back seat, but I have managed to get some stuff done.

So here is the next batch of 250pts of Ultramarines. these were scheduled to be finished by 9th march, but as you can see this didn't happen. However they aren't too bad and I reckon could be finished in a day or two.

Army so far: 500 Points

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff258/geekfilth/DSC00416.jpg

Overall I am very happy with these so far. The army is getting painted comparatively quickly for me, but doesn't feel rushed. Obviously I am a bit behind but think I should be able to catch up.

The scouts gave me a bit of a headache, I wasn't entirely happy with the sergeant conversion but now it has some paint it isn't too bad, although the greenstuff work is a bit messy and if given the chance I would do it very differently second time around.

And the Captain is shaping up nicely. I have really enjoyed painting him so far, until that is I realised he looks like Superman! I now can't shake that image and it is proving to be quite distracting!!

So next month I should have finished these guys, and will have a 5 man assault squad plus 2 land speeders to show too.

Thanks for looking. :)

Its looking rather good mate. I have tried and failed at painting ultra's a good few times, so my respect for those who do em up right is only growing.

Would a colour breakdown be too much to ask?

StraightSilver
19-03-2009, 13:20
Hi LegendFX,

Cheers, I must admit I never really liked Ultramarines so was surprised when I decided to do an army of them!

This army is an exercise to see if I can paint to a reasonably high standard in a relatively quick fashion, so I chose an army that i wouldn't normally enjoy to push me to my limits.

But now I am loving painting them, and when done properly I think can look cool. I am especially a big fan of Spiky James' Ultras on Warseer.

For mine though I pretty much stuck rigidly to the Codex which seemed appropriate for these guys!

I did actually post a paint recipe for them a couple of posts back I think which gives a basic rundown of the colours I used, but let me know if a more detailed step by stepp would help. I'm thinking of doing a tutorial for another forum soon as well, so may link it here.

Hi LegendFX,

No probs, a quick breakdown is as follows:

Armour:

All armour painted Regal Blue.
Armour painted Ultramarines blue leaving regal blue in recesses.
Thin Regal Blue wash applied tp joints etc to blend two blues together.
Ultramarines blue highlighted by adding skull white.

Gold.

Mithril Silver applied to all gold areas first to act as basecoat for gold.

Hey guys, sorry for not posting for a while but I have a small update....

A bit of a disastrous month for me this time around as I have not managed to stay on schedule at all, and am now a bit behind.

I didn't get last month's squads finished and this month was supposed to finish a 5 man Assault Squad and 2 Land Speeders.

Well the Assault Squad is almost finished, but the Speeders are currently only base coated unfortunately...

Any way here's where I am with the Assault Marines, should have these finished by the end of today but won't have the camera so thought I would put these pics up anyway

Assault Marines:

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff258/geekfilth/DSC00424.jpg
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff258/geekfilth/DSC00423.jpg

A bit of touching up here and there, some markings and purity seals and then their bases to do and these guys are done.

I think they have turned out ok considering they were done pretty quickly, but i have rushed them in places so may go back and redo some areas at a later stage,

Hopefully I can get back on target and get some more work done this weekend. I have to paint 5 Terminators for the next segment of the army.

Cheers for looking. :)

Cheers everyone,

I have enjoyed painting this army so far (blue is nice and easy), although old habits die hard and I have slowed down a bit.

However I plan to get really stuck in this weekend and finish off all the little bits that I didn't get done last month.

But yes I can see why it is very hard to get an army finished, I just get so easily distracted, and am already planning my next army! Doh!

I must stay on track and get this done, but the new IG Codex is out very soon and Guard will always be my first love....

Anyway hopefully will have some finished pics soon, and am starting on my Terminators this weekend.

And Cheers Sheep, I have been admiring your Death Korps on here for a while, they are lovely! :)

Sorry to bump, hope that's allowed....?

Ok so not much of an update at this point, just some photos I took to show what I am working on right now.

So here we have my Land Speeders:

Still got tonnes to do on this, and unfortunately one of them had a horrible accident last night when I dropped it and broke it, and I now cannot get the thing to glue back together.... DOH!

A tiny bit more work on last month's Scouts:

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff258/geekfilth/DSC00439.jpg

Really not a lot done here, just freehanded the Ultras Logos and stuck some squad markings on.

And now for next month's painting (if I ever catch up...)

Quite looking forward to painting these guys as they are nice and big! :)

Cheers Gonzo/Daniel I am glad you like them. I always tried to avoid painting Marines as I was never a fan, but now that I am having a go I am actually really enjoying them.

And thanks to everyone again for the comments, they really do help to keep me motivated, and it makes swearing at Space Marines seem almost worthwhile some days! LOL!

However I must admit that things have been a bit slow on the painting front, which is a shame as this challenge was meant to negate that. However having said that I have done more in the last 5 months than I would normally do in about 2 years, so it is sort of working.

I really wanted to post up some finished additions to my Ultras, but unfortunately as we are also gaming once a month I find myself having to start new things to play with (the points value increases each month) which prevents me going back and finishing other things.

So at the moment I have some progress on the Termis. These are almost done:

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff258/geekfilth/Picture007-3.jpg
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff258/geekfilth/Picture008-3.jpg

And a teeny, weeny bit of progress on the Speeder:

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff258/geekfilth/Picture003-3.jpg
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff258/geekfilth/Picture004-3.jpg

This guy was actually done very quickly last night, but I realise now that he was a bit rushed in places (in particular his arms) so I will touch him up a bit at a later date.

One thing I have learnt though is that I need to be a bit braver and try som new techniques for speeding things up. I am getting to grips with the new washes which are making life a lot easier (especially on metallics) and need to experiment more with the foundation paints, but I also plan to start using an air brush to base coat soon so I will let you all know how that goes.

Cheers for looking. :)

Thanks Flying Toaster.

Hopefully I will get some extra painting time as it's a long weekend (Bank Holiday in the UK - God I love the month of May!), so I should have the Termis and the Speeders finished.

Then the weekend after I just have to get a Dreadnought done for month 5. I have painted a Marine Dread for my Black Templars and found it to be a very nice model to paint. A fair chunk of it can be done using Bolt Gun Metal and Badab Black, and the Ultramarine Blue areas will be easy as they are nice and big!

So should hopefully have a bit more progress soon!

Hey Guys,

Ok so I have to admit that for one reason or another I got nowhere near as much painting done as I wanted to this month, but I have a tiny bit of progress to show (lots of pics but not much painting - DOH!)

Some more progress on my Space marine Captain:

I need to get rid of the "shiny decal" effect, but that should go once it's varnished hopefully.

Nice looking Ultra Marine you've got there StraightSilver. Are you painting random units or do you have an army in mind? Maybe you should fill out the Tactical Squad to ten men to make it better gamingwise. Keep up the good work.

Looks sweet - some nic elittle touches I'll steal if you don't mind (decoration on the dread and land speeder interiors)....?!

Cheers guys.

@ Spekkiebig: Yeah I must admit that I do really need to add in more tactical marines. I thought I could get away with 2 scout squads for my 2 minimum troops choices and then go with lots of elites / fast attack but having played a few games now I realise that I do really need more marines. Next month I plan to paint up a full 10 man Tactical Squad with a rhino and then hopefully the following month add 5 more marines to my initial Tac squad.

@ RTJ: by all means steal away! I must admit though that painting the interiors on the speeders has meant they have taken longer than I would have liked, but then again I don't think my OCD would allow me to leave them unpainted!

And the decoration on the Dread was purely to hide the fact that I had to cut off a Black Templar symbol off it (I cannibalised the dread from spares) and needed to hide a nasty gouge! It's just a Terminator shield with the laurel wreath from the coomand sprue (I think?) but i think it turned out ok.

Hello, have to say your army is impressive I suffer from the same things you do as in I am always starting new projects I am however trying to make ammends and begin to paint my enormous horde of models. I was wondering if you can give me your recipe for the rhino interior??? what colors did you use methods vehicles are my weakness I am scared to start one in fear of ruining it. Also your terminators are fantastic the painting is very clean well done.
One last question if you don't mind what colors did you use for painting and highlighting the red helmets on your sargants and the white terminator helmets. Thanks in adavnce and again excellent job!!!!!

only joking...

As ever a beautiful standard of painting, would love to see a few pictures of your combined Ultramar force, PDF and marines.

Cheers lennysmash, I really must get my Ultramarines finished, they have sat on the shelf for a good few months now, which is a shame as they don't need a huge amount done to them to be honest.

I have a newer blog for the Macragge PDF here:

But I guess you've seen that.

But you're right, I should really get a pic of the whole lot together, which I may do later today.

Hopefully if all goes to plan both armies should be finished by July this year, and then I can start finally playing Apocolypse with them.

I am also toying with the idea of painting up an Ordo Xenos Inquisitor and using one of the Inquisition Codexes for them, so that I can use elements from both armies in normal games too.

You have made me realise today though how long it is since I showed my Marines any love, so I may have to start my Scout Bikers now.....
