Im going to play Empire and I have som questions about the steam tank.

First of all, is it worth to play with one?
The main concern I have is when the tank is losing some of its wounds. When it has lost 5 or more its pretty much useless. And if you are playing against cannons and bolt throwers you better hide it behind a forest?

And the last question. How do you play with it? Is it worth fiering the cannon? Do you have it as a flank support unit och do you just have it in the middle of the army attacking anything that comes close?

Mine did pretty well in Warbands. I had an Engineer and some free company escorting one around the Empire doing its duties. It got reduced low enough I couldn't generate steam a couple times, but it was still entertaining to watch everyone target it and go after it.

Ok thats interesting. How about larger games of 2000p or more?

There's going to be a lot more around that can hurt it. I'm not sure its quite mobile enough for a large game... one of the biggest advantages in Warbands was actually the smaller table width. Moving and Firing is extremely difficult when you generate at best 5 steam points.

Every army has shooting that can hurt it or characters that can hurt it (Vampires with Great Weapons, Bruisers, etc...). The Steam Tank can't fight back during its turn and without CR, really doesn't stand much chance of convincingly defeating an enemy in combat (You really need +2 CR to get the much-needed panic, since most armies can get LD 7, 8, or higher in the core troops you'll be going after - there's no use taking a 300 point tank for goblin-murdering).

It's 300 points for a cannon that can be a decent chariot in combat. It has little to no maneuverability and the 18" cannon or steam gun really aren't worth it. It gets targeted with everything, and though its a warmachine (so it counts until it dies), it gets less useful with every wound. Also, people hate it because it is a hassle to eliminate, so even if it is only mildly useful every game, you still get terrible comp. scores and that can hurt you a lot. It really isn't fluffy unless you have a Master Engineer in your army.

It's good, there's no question about that. But is it worth 300 points to get some extra wounds on a cannon/chariot hybrid that gets less useful as the game wears on (losing a turn with it is huge because it doesn't fight during the opponent's turn, which is half the battle)? Would it be more economical to take 3 cannons (that can fire long-range and are relatively safe) or 1 Cannon and a unit of Knights, etc...?

You have to answer these questions in the context of your army, but as for me I find the generalist jack-of-all-trades Steam Tank much less useful than multiple separate specialist units/warmachines/characters that can accomplish the same tasks just as efficiently.

Im not saying you are wrong, but just some pointers.
If you manage to get 5 steampoints, move 6 and hit an enemy and use the 3 remaining points in close combat, thats 4d3 str 6 impact hits. That should be enought to breake a unit, sure you cant kill them but they still run away, so I would not say its uselsess in close combat. And if it gets targeted by everything that sounds good to me, or isnt it? I dont know if it is worth 300p as a vaccum cleaner. It still has a 360 degree charge.

Any other input regarding the tank?

Are you serious? You used a Steamtank in Warbands games? You are awful!

No it doesn't. The empire book states it can't charge against anything not inside it's front arc.

There is no way in .... it has a 360 charge. It is good in fun games and/or if you like making enemies. I was proud to get a draw against an empire army with one by feeding it rather cheap units whilst my elites ran around the table and destroyed all his other units. It is well worth its points so long as it isnt crippled early in the game so beware!
