View Full Version : The agonizingly slow creep of Waaagh! Slugface the slow

Hey all-

Recently got my hands on a substantial number of orcs and goblins for cheap so I figured it was time to go all out (well, all out as I go... maybe 5 models a week at best). The log should help me stay focused and motivated, get some feedback and ideas and maybe even get 1000 points painted by new years. With winter break coming it could happen!

I tend to paint very slow and detailed so this could take a looong time- I tend to do small models in groups of 3-4, like goblins, and bigger stuff in pairs, like orcs. I find it more satisfying, because the whole army is slightly differently colored and unruly, and it stretches my few and far between miniatures dollars that much further.

The horde!

(EDIT 3/8/10- Changed it to be my final "at least one of everything" wishlist, minus a few character combinations.)

The overall theme for the army is strongly themed, characterful units. My original army was lizardmen, and they are all over the place- different basing, colors, painting styles etc. If i can keep each unit consistent here I think it'll give the impression of a bunch of kooks somehow drawn together, with the only unifying factor being they're all strange.

Don't have a lot of pictures yet, maybe tomorrow.

Squig hopper test- Got the model a long while back because I liked it, painted it up just now:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/hop.jpg

Sprue thrower 1/2- Made mostly from sprue, a few bits of wire and wire spool thrown in for good measure:

A few more pics tomorrow.

Wow!! great idea using sprues for that "sprue trower" it’s awesome!! What are you going to use as crew? The goblin hopper is looking good also

Sprue thrower 2/2

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/SprueThrower2of2.jpg

In answer to your question Fenix, I use spicy peanut things for crew.

Seriously though, not sure what I'm going to use. If i ever wind up getting a couple non-BfSP goblins I could probably convert a decent looking crew, but for now I'm .

The warmachine itself was fun to make- for this one I spent about $10 on a couple thicknesses of plasticard, some strips and dowels. Much nicer results imho.

Black orc test model

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/Blackorctest.jpg

Black , red and gunmetal were just too cliche so I went with purple. I like to think they're emulating my also barely started purple night goblins.

Pink fists of doom- Front rank

Converted these guys from the 6th edition starter box and some black orc bits. Should be amusing when done.

Night goblin archers

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/Gobsofdeath.jpg

Got 12/20 of these guys done so far- unconverted BfSP guys but they look pretty good painted and based. They once took out a (small) unit of swordmasters all on their lonesome, much honor to them. Though more typically they launch a fanatic into themselves, charge through it and then flee through it again without causing any damage to the enemy.

That's all I've got for now. This weeks project is to convert some Sword and board orcs from 6th ed. archer boyz and finish the Goblin archers.

Got 2 starter boxes worth of 6th ed orcs(64 guys), some extra left arms and shields, let's see how it goes.

Ah, the fearsome strategic mind of the night goblin. If they behaved otherwise it just wouldn't be right.

It isn't quite that bright in real life- the one on the left is more than a little washed out from flash.

Just a small update this time- spent the last couple hours converting up a couple sword and shield orcs from those chunky, ugly, impossible to rank up archers from the 6th ed starter box, some black orc bits, and a few arms and shields courtesy of ebay and $5.17.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/Swordandboardorcs.jpg

I made a few others but the command and the "dragon slayer" posed guy are the coolest looking.

Reason #937 to love orcs: You can give one a propeller hat and it works.

I like the three in the middle...

"I shoulds be the boss, I got the biggest spike on me 'at!"

"Just gonna stop dis arrer with my shield and den... ARGH"

Lefty doesn't like using his shield.

So far I've just been lopping off the arrow fletching on the quivers, gonna say what's left is a bag or something. Haven't had much luck straight up removing it neatly, and I don't have any greenstuff to fix the gouges with.

Probably going to get myself some for christmas, it'll be a lot easier than trying to finagle bits into just the right spot..

Finished converting my unit of sword and shield orcs!

Most of these guys are 6th ed. archer boys, a couple 2x choppa boyz to get an even 20. Every single one is converted in some way, at minimum an arm swap.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/Done_SS_orcs_1.jpg

In the back you can see my favorite two of the 10 i did today- pompahawk and shieldy.

Well, almost finished, now that I look at them some more I want to reposition a few weapons, add a mace or two, and remove a quiver or two i missed, but the hard part is over. The shields that wouldn't get in the way i added now, the rest are going on after painting.

The pink fists of doom- 2/18

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/pinkorcs1.jpg

These guys were a blast to paint- really happy with how the pink came out, despite it taking 3 or 4 basecoats for me to be happy with it. Sorry for the terrible pics, I'll get one of my photography whore buddies to help me out when I've got more to show.

I know I promised agonizingly slow but i didn't mean for it to be this agonizingly slow- my car got a cracked radiator pump, my girlfriends car threw a piston rod and finals happened so I've been neck deep in car entrails, thermodynamics and differential equations for most of two weeks. Goals for the immediate future are to finish the front rank of the pink fists, then polish off my NG archer unit for my first painted and based unit ever!

Comments and criticism always welcome!

Hey all!

Sorry for the month between posts- been painting (slowly) but mostly been having things go wrong. On the plus side, I finally have a complete unit, my first ever! 20 NG archers are completed, fully based and ready to go. Once I get the move tray done (it's drying now) I'll post a picture. I've also got a spear chukka 50% done in the works and 8 pink fists of doom done.

Pics are forthcoming tomorrow when I'm less tired...

Braad: The fist is an armored black orc weapon fist, with the weapon removed, spikes added to form a really brutal knuckleduster, and the bracelet already on the model painted to match.

Thanks for the comments and encouragement guys!

Okay, here we go. An actual update for you guys!

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/NGarchers-complete.jpg

My first fully painted, based and movement trayed unit ever- 2- NG archers. I'm stupidly happy with them despite the middling sculpt.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/PFoD8of18.jpg

The pink fists of doom- now 8 strong. I personally love the banner, despite how annoying hard it was to paint right (you can see some sketches in the other pics @_@)

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/spruethrower1complete.jpg

Sprue thrower 1 of 2- Completely homemade from sprue, styrene strips, sheets, and rods. I really love this one too, and once I get some GS gonna sculpt some crew for it as well.

In the background you can see my current project- a BfSP cannon for my buddy. Gonna be a rocky base with snow, should be a nice change of pace.

After that, I'll be converting a few more 6th edition starter box guys into either a support unit of 10 orcs or adding a few more guys to both the pink fists and the sword and shield guys, finishing assembling the boar chariot and painting probably some spear NGs. I'm also trowing around ideas for a homemade rock launcher:

1) A standard-issue trebuchet

2) A see-saw thing, with a target on one end and a rock on the other. A bunch of goblins will be being shoved off a cliff above it by an orc onto the seesaw to launch a rock.

3) A bunch of goblins pulling back a tree, with a rock in it as a giant slingshot.

4) A horrifyingly cobbled goblin cannon, with giant heaps of gunpowder barrels everywhere, all the crew smoking and a snotling roasting marshmallows over a fire.

Right now I'm leaning towards 1 and 4, but let me know if you have any ideas! C&C always welcome about anything, and be as harsh as you want, I want to get better.

Thanks guys.

Finally all settled into my new digs- one of the many perks of which is I get my very own dedicated corner in which to nerd out!

No green for you this time around, just a smallish side project for a buddy.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/cannonWIP.jpg

BfSP cannon + crew + base. Pink foam on hardboard, drybrushed and some grass. I really like how the cannon turned out with the green and brown and metal subdued scheme. I'll be painting the crew in a similarly muted fashion to match.

After the cannon gonna do 5 or 10 rnf speargoblins, then a unit of 5 piders w/ mus. They'll be fun, i just get to use whatever insane color combo I want :D

Battle Report: O&G gunline (me) vs. Dwarves, 700 point, 4'x4' board

Part of the "escalation" style battles me and a roomy are doing. 500 Points was O&G vs. LM, got slaughtered. 600 point was O&G vs. Dwarves, minor victory for me. Standard rules, not warbands.

Me:

Blorc Warboss, Boar, Akrit axe, Enchanted shield

20 PFoD (Boyz w/ extra choppa), FC
20 NG bowmen, 2 fanatics
2x10 Arrer Boyz w/ Mus
5 Spider riders

3 Spearchukkas
Rock Lobba

vs.

Thane
Thane BSB

10 Hammerers
10 Ironbreakers
10 Warriors
10 Thunderers

Deployment:

Terrain was a hill and ruin, scattered from center. The hill went my way so I was hoping to put some arrer boyz on it and rain arrows from turn 2.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/Battledeployment.png

Turn 1:

He wins the first turn and moves everything forward, angling hammerers to my left, with warriors screening Ironbreakers.

On my turn, Rightmost arrer boyz squabble. Other arrer boyz take the hill, PFoD move up next to ruin. Spider riders run out to left flank, and NG archers move forwards. Stone thrower misfires, disabling it for 2 turns. Spear chukkas inflict 1 or two kills.

Turn 2:

Thunderers unload on the PFoD, killing 4. Hammerers move to engage the PFoD and iron breakers move towards center field. Warriors move towards the NG archers

Arrer boyz on hill squabble, PFoD squabbles but General quells (killing 2) and moves to get charge on hammerers. Spider riders prepare to flank charge Thunderers. Spearchukkas, NGs and arrer boyz unload on iron warriors, causing a panic test, which they pass.

Turn 3: Hammerers move in to PFoD, Thunderers unload, killing 4 more. Warriors move up 1" from NG archers, Rightmost arrer boyz squabble (again). Fanatics cause panic on warriors, they pass.

PFoD charge hammerers, wiping out most of the front rank (they are 7 wide). Their thane whales on orcs, killing 2-3. Spider riders charge thunderers, and they flee, leaving spiders next to the pink fists. NGs in front of warriors squabble. Fanatic scatters into rightmost Arrer boyz, killing 5 and the rest panic off the board.

Turns 4&5: Ironbreakers join fight with Orcs. Spiders get a 6 for animosity and are forced to charge the ironbreakers. One ironbreaker dies, all spiders are cut down. Pink fists are slaughtered when they run. Thunderers rally and shoot one of my spear chukkas crew to death.

Warriors kill 3 night goblins and they flee off board, despite rolling all hits on the dwarves. Let arrer boyz take charge from the ironbreakers and are cut down. Stone thrower fires one last shot at the warriors, who are now where the Night goblins started. It scatters on to one of the spear chukkas, destroying it and all crew. With two siege engines left and him down only his hammerers, half the warriors and 2-3 guys from the other units I concede a massacre.

Lessons learned:

1) Orc archery can't hold a candle to thunderers.

2) Stone throwers are not very effective in small games.

3) Orc boyz have a hard enough time on the charge against most core choices. When in combat for more than one round, against special choices and when the opponent remembers his hatred and reduced to 12 guys before combat starts, they are dead. Even when supported by my hero.

5 more pink fists are done, quick picture in an hour or so.

Another small update for you all- 5 NG spearmen, a black orc and squig hopper- 48 points of destruction and mayhem ready for the Waaagh! ...I aim low:cries:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/goblinorcsquighopper.jpg

I like the size differential in the O&G army- the smallest of the snotlings come up to about the knee of a black orc, and that black orc is knee height to a giant. Much more interesting than a force where everything is exactly the same size.

Also a bit of base work on some BfSP goblins I'm gonna call heros:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/NGheros.jpg

The bases are just the ever-useful pink foam, painted over so they don't melt when I prime them.

Other than that, just some based the rest of the NG spearmen and 5 arrer boyz.

Comments appreciated... I'd hate to pentapost (quintapost?) in a few days.

A little tired of painting green, but no money for something else (having just been laid off of my main job...) so I decided to give my greenskins some terrain to conquer:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/pinkrock.jpg

4 sheet of 1" thick pink foam at an angle, chopped up using only a hobby knife, some rocks from the road and particleboard. Surprisingly therapeutic to make.

Mysterious chunk of foam!

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/Pinkblock.jpg

Which hopefully soon will be looking more like this:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/pinkrockplan.jpg

@ Karlon- Thanks! The squig was my first try at using mostly washes instead of my usual layering . It doesn't show well in the pic but all the washes (I think something like 5) give the skin a nice organic feel.

Here's a WIP on the mega Mork monument (or maybe giant gork grimace?). Night goblin for scale- I was sick of little piddly 4" terrain pieces that you have to spend maybe one turn to get around and wanted to make something that would really alter the game, without being too impractical. It's based on a 9" circle. I'll probably go back to painting my army sometime in the next few days and slowly put this guy together when I get the urge to work on a larger scale. Any ideas for a next (orcy) terrain piece? I've got two impassables now, so a sizable hill or forest seems like a good next step.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/gork_or_mork_rock.jpg

I'm probably going to paint it granite grey, to match the rest of the rocks in the army, but my GF pointed out it has a badlands vibe, and a reddish brown or tan might work as well. What do you think?

C&C welcome, as always.

Thanks! I would have hated myself if had made yet another black, brown and red O&G army so funk it was.

When I was tossing around ideas for terrain the other contender was a dwarf statue- I might use you idea and just vandalize it some so I get to model something neat then cover it in orc cockney graffiti (or whatever the hell they speak in).

Major bummer when you melt something by accident... happened to me on a much smaller scale when I learned that superglue also melts foam :(.

The sword and shield orcs are fairly far back on my list (finish PFoD, characters Finish Speargolbins, squig hoppers, boar chariot, then them) but since you asked nicely I might have to bump him/her up some.

Inspirational stuff, love the monument!

Have you got a recipe for the rusty moon on a stick in your Night Gobbo archers? I could do with some help 'cause I'll be getting round to mine soon (if things go to plan!)

The Orange part of the moon is basecoated with scorched brown mixed with orange, then two highlights, the first with more orange in the mix and the second pure orange.

The metal ends are Tin bitz, 50/50 tin bitz/gold, then add mithril to the mix, then pure mithril. I may have used a black, brown or chestnut ink wash- can't really remember.

The gouges are black, then boltgun (leaving some black showing), then mithril.

The rough texture was pure accident- I didn't shake up the can enough and it left a fuzzy coating on parts of 6-7 goblins. Annoying everywhere else but worked there. You could probably get a similar effect with extremely fine sand glued to the surface.

Hope that helps.

I use a mix of old citadel paints, some of which might be out of production, and new vallejos (sp?). I also tend to mix most of my colors- the orc's skin is scorched brown mixed with dark angels green and highlighted with yellow, a lot of the colors are mixed with black or brown, etc. The only straight colors I use are snakebite leather, scorched brown and metallics.

Thanks! I'll have a group shot of 6 or so black orcs in a few days, they really are turning out nicely. As for the pink orcs I suppose if everyone liked the color then I'd have to find some other color to shock and offend with...

tutorial on your orc skin? :)

I don't keep a consistent recipe for skin, so every group of orcs or goblins I've painted look different. Here are my favorites, but sorry if these are too vauge, I really can't remember them well.

"Muddy" green: Dark angels green mixed pretty heavily with scorched brown. 2-3 layers of highlights by adding yellow to the mix.

"Stark" Green: Dark angels green mixed with black for basecoat, the pure dark angels. 2 layers of highlights with increasing amounts of white in dark angels green.

Night goblins: Mix roughly 2 parts goblin green, 2 parts snakebite leather, 1 part black and two parts white for a basecoat. Add increasing amounts of white for 1-2 layers of highlights. Wash hands and face with very thinned down black if not defined well.

Stuffburger, you mentioned creating a forest/wood terrain piece- perhaps you could do a dingy piece filled with signs of Forest Goblin life? I'm thinking feral snotlings in the trees and huge spider webs...

I like that idea. I've been planning to scratchbuild some trees for a while now (wire armature, sculpy and texture of some sort), just haven't gotten to it yet. Big 50' (scale) trees, not these little piddly hedges I see sometimes. Some snotling treehouses, webs, dried up spider husks... I think I'm doing that next.

Got a few more guys painted the last few weeks, enough so I feel like I can post an "army" shot of everything I have painted:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/army.jpg

Lots of half finished units- The pink fists need at least 7 more, goblins need at least 15, 4 more squig hoppers, 10 more Black Orcs, 5 more arrer boyz, sprue thrower crew (sculpt and paint :D)... So 44 Models before I will let myself start another unit. In there somewhere will be an orc general and 4 skull pass night goblin guys. But once that's done I'll have a good thousand points painted up, which was my goal back in december 2008 (to have done by new years )

The arrer boyz, who have decided that it is not the elves discipline and years of practice but merely their clothes which makes them such good archers:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/arrerboyz.jpg

@Codemonkey: Thanks! You're welcome to the idea. When I get some greenstuff for my birthday (Only 3 days!) I'll post a summary of struggling with sculpting a crew for it too.

@Wolf: You got it, just very slowly...

@Brazensix: You're allowed to say it, gotta have things to kill, you know? As for the humor I figured since O&G are the wackiest army in the game I might as well roll with it.

C&C, questions, random musings welcome as always.

Edit: Ran into a bit of a snag on the terrain projects with the gaps between layers... Anyone know a good (and cheap ) material to fill them?

Good evening all. What have I been up to the last month? Painted a thousand points of O&G to a golden demon standard you ask?

Nope. I tried my hand at sculpting and produced three goblin crewmen for one my homemade chukkas. Not too terrible for a first attempt if I do say so myself:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/goblin_crew.jpg

All things together I think making the spear chukka and crew took about 10 hours of modeling. Definitely not the greatest of cost-cutting measures to avoid buying a $15 spear chukka but a very fun experiment. Working on a fanatic next.

The "wizard" I think is going to get a big Gandalf beard, maybe a robe and some other fiddling. The BSB is going to have a giant freehand picture of himself on the banner, and the head on top will be in gold (can't see it well here, but it's the same head). http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/goblins2.jpg

My newest unit of night goblins. I liked the all red hero so much I decided he needed a unit to command. These guys have a very simple and fast scheme to paint- I only use Red, Black, White, Camo Green, scorched brown, snakebite brown, silver, and orange. The single guy is my test model, the clump of 5 is a homemade regiment base- just take thin sheet styrene, glue it to the top and bottom of the bases you want, trim of excess and bam! super cheap regiment base.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/troll.jpg

Standard issue BfSP troll. If anyone has two of these they don't want I'm buying.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/finalpinkfists.jpg

Finally finished the pink fists! I took some full unit shots but they didn't come out well.

That's it for now guys- In a couple days I'll post an army shot with all of my fully finished units and characters.

@mdiscala: Thanks! Super cheap character too :D

@Durloth: I like the idea but I'm not entirely sure how to make an obviously fake beard at this scale... I might fiddle around with it some.

Edit: I had a request to show my homemade pump wagon. It never really got past the rough assembly stage when I realized it was wayyyyy too big but I still use it as a proxy from time to time

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/pumpwagon.jpg

It's made of sprue, some black orc bits, sheet styrene of several thicknesses, and styrene rod for rivets- cut a 1" piece, glue it on, then use nail clippers to take off all but a little rivet. The remaining chunk can then be used abotu a dozen more times.

FE FI FO FUM! I smell myself going a little insane as I am starting to scratchbuild...

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/giantwip1.jpg

A giant! So far he's just sculpy over a copper armature. He's in a "drunk carousing" pose as I wanted to go for a goofy tone for the model. The one foot on the ground thing has me a little worried but if it's too unstable I'll just put the other foot stepping on an orc or something

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/sporcandbigboss.jpg

I also did a little work on an orc bigboss (the one who's gonna be all pink, hence the romantic rose vine base) and painted up a test model for my spear orc block. I often field black orcs on boars so I may be adding some greenstuff armor to make him fit the bill a little better.

@N0th1ng c4n b34t 3lv3s: Thanks! The spear chukka is probably my favorite so far... certainly took me plenty of time to create for a model worth only 35 points.

@Gargobot: Yep, twice... The first time it happened I hadn't yet looked at the O&G miscast table and rolled the "casters head explodes" result, much to my dismay :cries:

@El Aartos: Thank you, one of my goals was to avoid the most common colors and do something different. I'm not entirely sure what you're asking but it's entirely scratchbuilt apart from a few bits, mainly using sprue and styrene rods and sheets. I had looked at the current GW pumpwagon for inspiration but didn't follow it all that closely I don't think.

As always, comments and criticism are very welcome!

The skin was a 50/50 mix of vallejo paints- their snakebite leather equivalent whose name I forget, and what they call "light green"- the color is similar to goblin green I think, maybe a little brighter. I added increasing amounts of white for 2 or 3 highlight layers.

Hi guys, it's been a while but this log isn't dead just yet. I've done a few things in the meantime- some terrain, goblins, modelling my goblin landboatchariot, fanatic and giant. I'll be posting them at some point, hopefully not 6+ months from now...

Here's the orc character I just finished. Still needs a shield but everything else is done.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/orcboss.jpg

Photoshopped to get the colors more true to life. The skin is jade green and scorched earth with white added for highlights- it's pretty blue which helps set him apart from the masses of boyz and grotz. I know I was promising all pink but I just couldn't get a good mental picture of how it would work so I whimped out.

Those savage orc boars are on hold for the moment since 8th has rendered cav in general and boar boyz even more so pretty useless in game terms. I've got 15 in total, I'm hoping our new AB will make them more usable so I can include them at least some of the time.

Another update- 10 more goblin archers and a SOBB test I painted a while back. Since it looks like boar boys are going to be at least usable if not good with the new AB I'm gonna start building them again.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/strypers.jpg

Calling them the strypers (http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/Stryper.jpg) now. They're up to 30 now, may go up to 40 at some point. At the moment they're on 2 5x3 move trays for easy changes between horde and deep.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y81/Dahvzombie/sorc.jpg

Still needs a shield and maybe tattoos... I may go with red or just skip them altogether.

Both pics retouched to get the colors a little less brown.
