View Full Version : Painting my Orks in 6 days...

15-12-2008, 17:19
Okay so not the next six days but 6 days and quite soon!

I intend to paint the following;
Colours represent their completedness
Red is not started, Orange is startted and Green is complete!

Warboss in mega armour
10 Lootas
10 Kommando
4 Meganobs
1 Trukk
10 Boys
10 Boys
10 Boys
10 Boys
10 Stormboys
2 Deathkopta

This pretty much makes up my 1500 point army minus trukks for all the boys which will be bought from ebay over the next month or so and modelled and painted as they arrive

I have one completed paint test nob (free WD one)

Im not happy with the green or the red (trousers) so will be changing the base colour to the appropriate choice from the foundations range. As youp can see it is not beautiful painting but should look good when the whole army is done the same

C&C welcome as ever

Mate that is a lot of models to paint, your very much going for the horde theme [didn't initially see the truckz]? I've done speed painting before but not to that volume. I personally think the green looks good but would agree that the red needs a rethink.

Are you going to add any tattoos/warpaint/decorative paints to add a few more colours? I remember orks of old used quite alot of chequered effects and such which although is pretty hard to paint i'm sure i remember seeing transfer strips?

p.s. i hope this isn't going to emproach on our new years revolutioning!!

It is quite a few to paint but each one doesn't take long at all...
Do you not think the green is a tad too dark? It feels like a lot of detail has been lost as there inst much contrast between light and dark on the skin?

If push comes to shove i'l forget the painting, the revolution takes precendent!

I think the green is nice actually. very dark and brooding. Thats a serious ork.

16-12-2008, 00:58
I agree- the dark green is best; otherwise they all look like a bunch of vegetables.

16-12-2008, 01:10
Very nice, i'm always in the mood for more Deff Koptas as well, can't wait to see yours.

16-12-2008, 02:26
I like it so far. I'm watching this because I just got a boat load of orks and I;m very interested to see how yours turn out in 6 days. I'd like to try and mow through mine fast too.... GL with it! That's a lot to paint.

16-12-2008, 03:38
How did you do the skin? It looks awesome.

16-12-2008, 07:03
The skin is just snot green straight over a black spray and then inked with badab black. There really is nothing sophisticated about the painting on this model!

This guy actually looks real good...an army of orks looking like him would look quite intense on the tabletop. If I were to recommend something to you...it'd be for you to paint the entire army like this tester to see if you can get them all done in 6 days like that. Then you can go back and go over the details on your own time.

At least, that's how I like to paint my armies. Week 1 - Build the army, week 2 - get the basic model painted, and little by little get the details done. This way you get them out on the table and playing in a very short amount of time, and you can see how they look on the table and add little subtle changes to draw the look of the army together.

16-12-2008, 07:14
that is a very ambitious project. like the scheme, understated, and it works well, i think you can get away with the skin like that, anyway nobs are meant to have darker skin, but id stick with that colour for all the orks, anymore and you'll destroy your soul painting that amount of skin in 6 days!

I think a little planning is required before I kick this off so I haver devised the following plan:

Day 1: 10 Boys, 5 Loota
Day 2: 10 Boys, 5 Loota
Day 3: 10 Boys, Trukk
Day 4: 10 Boys, 4 Meganobs
Day 5: 10 Kommando, 2 Deathkopta
Day 6: 10 Stormboy, Warboss, Wierdboy

This gives me a maximum of 15 models a day to paint which should be easily achieveable as well as getting christmassy stuff and uni work done as well!

Can anyone see a flaw in this plan? Please say so if you can, anything to make this easier is much appreciated

My only comment would be that your gonna get so bored of painting boyz that you may not want to paint 10 on day 4, maybe shifting a few more towards the start of the week giving you extra bonus later in the week of painting more specialised miniatures when your enthusiasm is wavering...?

16-12-2008, 21:17
Looking good, more pictures soon?

16-12-2008, 23:37
Goodluck with the painting, everytime i start orks i end up getting rid of em cos i get bored painting em.

I finished modelling my deathkoptas today and here they are in all their ex-sentinel glory

Number one

Number two - the ork pilot is not the finished article, I just needed to put one in to ensure the rotor blades weren't too low!

They look awesome mate! Is that plasticard used for the rotors?

17-12-2008, 19:16
Yeah its plasticard cut to a rotor blade (ish) shape with plasticard tubing to attach to the 'hub'

Day one down and I'm behind schedule already!
Only managed to get the 10 stormboys done today but then again I spent all morning driving home and being force fed cups of tea by my mum!
Hopefully with a longer day and a desk lamp Ill be able to get 20 boys painted tomorrow!

Anyway progress for today:

Sorry for the poor photo, I should be able to take better ones tomorrow as Ill have a lamp, daylight and some white paper...

C&C welcome and requested as ever

Another day another sort of fail!
I only got 10 boys painted up today:

However I realised that ages ago when I put these together I had painted 10 boys... They are however rather bright! With a black wash they look like this:
only a little lighter as this image is quite dark?

Do people think this is close enough? I kinda do, maybe ill ink them up and leave them for now and if they stand out like a sore thumb when the rest are done I can replace them?
What do you think the great warseer community?

P.S. Happy christmas for tomorrow everyone! or happy hanukkah / holidays etc etc

That's a daunting task, painting 1,500 points of orks in six days, behind schedule! Best of Luck, Hwd. BTW, your most recent photos aren't showing up. Have a Merry Christmas!

24-12-2008, 15:56
I think it's do-able!! I did the majority of an 1850 pt orc mob in a week and that was 123 boyz, 3 kanz, 3 armoured meganobz, and 5 nobz and 8 stormboyz . The only thing I have left which I'll spend time on is the my mega-armoured warboss, my big mek, kommandos, 3 deffcoptas (which are points swappable with my kanz), trukk, and battlewagon

24-12-2008, 22:58
good luck dude! look forward to seeing this one progress, im guessing quite quickly ;)
merry Christmas!

25-12-2008, 05:22
Keep going, you can dooo it!!!:D Keep posting pictures too! I'm really interested to see how everything progresses - I have at least 2000 points of ork goodness sitting here and need to get em painted!

Keep up the awesome work!

28-12-2008, 09:17
Well progress can be summed up in two words: EPIC FAIL!

I have completely failed to keep on track and as such I have only got 40 done and havent painted a thing since christmas eve... Still 40 in two days is okay! I hope to get some done this afternoon, maybe 5 lootas just to keep things tickling over but I really need to spend the day writing my dissertation, writing coursework, writing a phd proposal and revising for my exams!

28-12-2008, 10:49
oh dear! lol well you tried, and you should keep up the work, but i agree, uni work gets in the way of my warhmmer addiction too!
