Does only the 10th company have scouts?

Does only the first company have terminators?

Simple questions. :)

Yes I think so. Though units from these companies are attatched to the battle forces of the other companies as needs be.

Double yes.

I'm going to have to put up the Codex basic organisation charts at some point.

C:SM 3rd Ed had it all laid out on the chart in the back.

the 10th coy is primarily scouts, the First however is made up of vets, a proportion of these would have access to Tem armour, they have full support (predominatly land raiders) it is not organised along the lines of Tac, dev and aslt squads.

Hope that helps

Generally speaking, when a Space Marine is first inducted to the chapter, they join the 10th company as a scout, until they "earn their stripes" and are promoted to another company.

Terminator armour is owned by the chapter as a whole, but can only be used by those with appropriate training as skills. When a space marine performs exceptionally well, they are promoted to the first company, and are trained in the use of the terminator suits.

Technically speaking, anyone who is trained in the use of Terminator armor could wear it, such as a Chaplain, a Librarian or even perhaps a Captain of a Company other than the first, as long as they had been properly trained, However in most Chapters this appears to be rare.

Some chapters do diverge from the standard codex organisation and group all of the various types of marine together.

Notably the Fleshtearers and the Iron Hands do this. The Fleshtearers because of their depleted resources and size. The Iron Hands have a Clan structure where a recruit is inducted to a certain clan and remains part of it until they are a veteran or they get KIA.

Salamanders diverge as well.

Seven Companies, more Tac/Dev, fewer FA, much smaller Scout Company. Chapter Master is Captain of First Company acting as Regent for Vulkan.

The Black Templars are not organised into Companies but Crusades. Their terminators are members of The Sword Bretheren, who are all veteran marines.

They do not have a Scout unit at all. New marines are called neophytes and wear Scout Armour. A Neophyte is trained by a regular marine (an Initiate to use the Templar jargon - similar to a knight adopting a squire) both of whom are in the same squad.

Which has always struck me as odd, since the *upgrades* to turn someone into a Marine are done during their teens, this means that BTs have a bunch of drugged-up post-surgical teenagers following them into battle.

:wtf:?

The Space Wolves are also another example of divergence from the Codex Astartes since they are divided into 12 Great Companies which are completely self sufficient. Each Great Company has their own Scouts and Terminators.

The other thing with the spacewolves is that you join the FA units first, then you get to be in Tactical squads, then if you survive long enough they'll let you fire the heavy weapons or wear the Termie armour. Only if you have been around a long while can you be a scout.

Some chapters do diverge from the standard codex organisation and group all of the various types of marine together.

My DIY chapter The Sons Of Pain does this, each company is independant of each other company unless the Chapter Master [who is also the 1st company captain] says differently. The 10th company prefers to call itself a "Covert operations" company rather than a Scout company, as many of it's scouts have earned their power armour but are kept as Scouts as they are better for Covert operations.

Even the 1st company has scouts, ok, so they're veteran scouts, they're still scouts.

Despite the fact that each company has scouts, only the 1st 2nd, 3rd and 4th have Terminators. The first has 20 suits, the second would have ten but someone had to get shot by an Ork dreadnought so they have 9, and the third and fourth have 5 each. They are rarely used.

No, SW Scouts can come from any unit. These are the loners. They find it difficult to abide to the structure and social behavior of a pack because they have been touched by Lokyar, the great Lone Wolf of legend. Since they can not act as a full member of a pack, the Wolf Priests will have them inducted into the Scouts where thier individuality, silence, and natural talents can be used to thier fullest.
