View Full Version : Infinity, Yu Jing Miniatures WIP

21-12-2008, 18:01
Hi guys, after hanging around for a while I thought I might have a go at getting active here. I've never done a blog or anything remotely similar so please be gentle and any general advice is welcome. I will have a go at posting some images as well so if it all goes wrong I might need some help !
A while ago now I posted a request on this site for information on games other then 40K. I've played 40K since Rogue Trader days but was finding the rules more restrictive and stopping me doing all the things I wanted to do, after a while all the games kind of blurred into the same dice rolling format. Anyway, I was recommended to look at Infinity by Pokpoko on here (thanks !) and I haven't looked back since ! It is a truely great game to play and the figures are awesome - which kind of brings me to the point of this log. I've started collecting Yu Jing ( a Chinese / oriental super power) and have just got cracking on the first one. These figures are white metal, true proportioned 28mm and have fantastic levels of detail with very little mold lines or flash. I am a slooowwwww painter but will try my best to keep updating this when I can.

With any luck there is a group shot of my first miniatures below !

I'll try this out and see if I've used the right code.

Well that seems to work on my computer, if you can't see an image do let me know before I get too carried away !

Here is the first of my Yu Jing, he is still very much WIP as you can tell and the photography is not that great but I am sure that will improv as I go along as well - again any hints and tips are always welcome.

Here he is from a different angle

and again

Let me know what you think

Right, here he is slightly later, a few more layers and a bit more work on the base

and again from a different angle

He has moved on a bit since these and I'll try and get some better lit pictures up later, but at least it's a start . . .

Very nice! Your orange is very nice.

Did you make the base, it's really cool! :D

If it makes you feel any better, it took me about a year to paint one of the starter boxes & two extra guys! ;)

Looking forward to your progress.

Nice looking model, and well-painted.
I particularly like the base.

Nice fella you got there, Nephilim! The model looks really cool with the paint job you're using. It really brings the model to life.
Is there an Infinity main website? I've seen several other posters around here play it and it looks interesting. Thanks.

http://www.nomadarachne.com/infinity_ENG/ is the link to english language site, but as it is, the page's down due to (according to a notice there) their Hosting company having technical problems (of biblical proportions-the site's been up and down all last week).

Nephilim: really dig the yellow, looks spot on (as far as the pics permit) the official paint scheme. i;m not really keen on 30mm bases(regardless of their legality in tournaments) so i'll just say they look solid;) keep up the good job, maybe you'll inspire me to finish painting the three models i started and haven't finished for a month now...

Your paint job is very nice and the mini is interesting. I hope we'll see more of your stuff soon as these miniatures aren't seen here every day.

I have never even heard of Infinity before, but from the look of the model you are painting they look very good.

Great colour scheme by the way, nice contrast between the gun and the armour, and tubing on the back!

Done a bit more work on this figure, sorted the base out a bit more and tidied things up. For those that expressed the interest the bases are by a company called Kerr and King, they are cast resin, 30mm DS as Pokpoko pointed out. I've never used this sort of base before always sticking with traditional GW style 25mm but for Infinty I wanted a more diorama feel to the mini's. I'll dig out some links and pics of their bases later.

Hopefully the photo's are a bit better, but still a long way to go.

Nice progress! :D

Hi Lithian, that Pan O group shot looks great, I remember seeing the building with the removable roof on the official forum, is the other paper scenery World Works ? Looks like a good table to play on.

Always good to see some more infinity (hoping to get some paint on my Ariadna over the christmas break).

The orange looks really good, cant wait to see more :)

Hey BYT - a long time 40K'er friend of mine just went out and bought a load of Ariadna on the strength of seeing my Yu Jing. Ariadna has some lovely models and I'm looking forward to having a game against him soon.

Have a good Christmas

Quite a few people have been asking about the bases, as I mentioned they are by a UK firm called Kerr and King, here's the web link http://www.kerrandking.co.uk they have quite a variety of sizes and styles. I picked these ones up from a show last month, I would say that they are not the best cast I've come across and needed more preparation work on them then any others I've used, but I do like the end result. Here are the "official" pictures of the three packs I bought . . .

these last ones are 40mm and are for some Yu Jing drones I picked up.

I now also have a set of road / pavement bases by someone else that look very nice and I am about to buy some bike bases for these two additions to my army (not my painting they are by the Infinty official painter Angel Giraldez, awseome painter, here's his web site, check it out http://www.studiogiraldez.blogspot.com/ ) . . .

Thanks man, I appreciate it! :D Yeah, the buildings are World Works from the Mars Station set, but I also mix it up with a lot of hand made stuff as well. I'm going to try to drag everything out today and cobble up a little holiday bat-rep. :)

Keep up the good work! :D

Hi again, Christmas got in the way a bit with painting etc but here's a bit of an update. I have been reading up on photographing mini's and tried a lot of different ideas but I am no where near pleased with the outcome yet, I'll carry on trying but here we go for now . . .

Here is my WIP Hac Tao with Missile Launcher

and from behind

still a fair bit of work on her, I'm trying out a new technique on the black armour

this is my Zanshi hacker

and from behind

as you can see mainly the base worked on so far and the start of the shading on the uniform.

More soon (hopefully !)

Good stuff so far, keep going!

The black looks nice so far, especially next to the green on the missile launcher. :D

Infinity is still my favorite game right now. Loads of fun.
And your Yu Jing look great so far.
Is this the same Nephilim that used to live in Orlando?

Not to derail the thread, but are you still in the tampa area dr. mercury? Im maybe thinking about playing infinity again, but I want to have people to play against. Im in clearwater at the moment.

looking great, put my nomads to shame :D
does everyone use the rounded warmachine bases?
they look sooo much better than the GWesque 25mm ones supplied

05-01-2009, 14:39
Hi guys,

Dr Mercury I'm from the UK so that wasn't me (honestly I have alibi's, I wasn't there at the time, whenever it was).
redyellowpinkgreen - I don't really know, I wanted a more diorama feel to the bases and as the rules don't mind about the odd milimeter here and there I thought it was the ideal opportunity. I personally really like the look of the rounded bases and wish GW weren't quite so anal about it or I'd base all my figures on them.

I've spent a day trying different photography ideas, I think they are improving now, here's some more WIP updates - what do you think ?

Thanks for the replies so far

Nephilim:i have to ask, what colour is the black on Hac lady? it looks vaguely like adeptus battlegrey, but not quite. is it washed?

also,Red...pink, i think i said it already(maybe wasn't here?), i far prefer the normal 25mm to the lipped version. for a while i used to like them, but now i think aside from being impractical(most terrain is still designed with 25mm in mind, so these just don;t fit well) they take the focus off the mini itself firstly, and secondly, detach the model from the battlefield too much aesthetically.

05-01-2009, 16:12
Hi Pokpoko, you are of course spot on, the armour was painted Foundation Adeptus Battlegrey and then given about 7 very thin washes of black ink. Eventually it will be highlighted a little on the edges to keep it looking dark and not too grey. I would normally just paint it black and highlight the edges but I thought I'd try something a bit different this time. The camera is washing the colours out a bit but at "gaming" distance I am really pleased with the effect.

05-01-2009, 16:18
Very nice, i asked because i tried something similiar with my bots, but they turned out too dark(still kept them, as they look suitably sooty for enigieer bots though:P).but then i used one thick wash of the new GW badab black. And i'm still looking for an idea for sissy guard paintscheme too,so i may consider it now that i'v seen a better version:P

05-01-2009, 17:08
I found the thinner the ink the better and just let it dry each time as you build up the layers, if the ink is too thick it will just turn the whole model black with no variation in colour. Give it a go !

The Hac Tao looks very cool, the colour combo works well. The Hacker is looking cool too. Are you panning on adding those little plastic discs to her hands?

06-01-2009, 11:30
Hi HN, those acetate sheets are awesome, what a simple but clever idea. I will be adding it at the very end.

20-03-2009, 11:49
Well here's a bit of an update, my Photobucket account seems to be playing up and not letting me upload anything new but here goes . . .

All done with her now.

Very nice! I especially like the eyes. :D
