So, I came across this image, being sent by one of the local gamer guys.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v495/britboyinTx/Stormbird4PM2.jpg

He claims it's a Stormbird and it's clearly from Epic 40,000 (Those are dreadnaughts, not Marines!) It LOOKS like someone kitbashed it together with an OLD Galactica or Space 1999 kit, but lots of things were scratchbuilt back then.

Thoughts?

(Attachments still aren't working for me it seems...)

Chose the {img] Option to link images in forums :chrome:

Couldnt see the picture, but afaik the Stormbird was invented for the HH Series. There was a larger dropship for Epic Marines at some point, but it wasnt described as a stormbird.

The Space Marine landing craft does fit in with some descriptions of a Stormbird as a "transporter" variant of it. (like the Thunderhawk Transporter)

Which makes sense to me, while the Stormbird would be fazed out in favour of the smaller more agile Thunderhawk for infantry insertions, you'd still want to keep the stormbird around for insertion of heavy armour.

They use Stormbirds in Dark Apostle. It makes sense to use the large craft to land larger amounts of infantry as well, seeing the Legions were so big.

Its a conversion from a toy ship from the early 80s (the ship had a sound effect which changed tone when you tilted it.) Cannot remember the name of the toy.

cant see the pic..but if it was the toy the Grand Marshal mentioned its a 'Starbird' or the smaller villianous 'Invader.' I have part of my original invader and have used it as scenery in more than a few games.. course, its all converted and painted now. The starbird was a long craft with a little ball like turret at the back of it.. and was white. the invader was black, smaller and had folding wings.

The pic is moved or deleted. Anyway, here are the other Warseer Stormbird threads which all feature the following pic: http://warseer.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=14448&d=1161630858 :

it was theorised that theres a old epic pic ( from space marine ) with a storm bird on (deploying assault marines), basicaly because its so diffrent from the then thurnder hawk model, it looked a lot like the Drop ship from Aliens.

check Bregs 1st link, thats the pic... should have checked his links before posting)

I'm more partial to the (Naismith) pic that I put on pg 2 of the 4th link.

I understand (from others here) that it was destined to be an IG dropship for Epic but to me it just says SM "stormbird" with the delta shape and the chamfered block look.

That was it!

Edit: Yes the original pic did use the Invader as the basis for the Stormbird.

Thanks for the link. Now I want to get the Star Bird command base shown there, using it as a Tau or whatever terrain piece. :)

Sad thing was..Iused to have the command base when I was a Kid.. It was really basically just a cardboard Tower and platform and after a few years of play finally died..

Like I said, I still have the 'Invader', though all the electronics kinda rotted out, so I refitted it and painted it up and use it as a scenery piece in some games.
