View Full Version : The Great Host of Saim-hann

01-01-2009, 00:43
Well, I've been meaning to do this for a while now. Due to the 5th ed release I've been rebuilding my Eldar list. I'm working towards an army consisting of:
2 squads of 6 G. Jetbikes each.
2 squads of 10 Dire Avengers.
1 Six man Squad of Fire Dragons.
1 squad of 10 Howling Banshees.
4 Wave Serpent transports
2 Fire Prisms
1 Farseer

So, let's kick this off right with the obligatory workspace photo

And now for the first squad of Dire Avengers: (Please forgive them. They were painted over a year ago.)

Now, a year later, we have squad two

I'll have more picks up later. Currently painting Fire Dragons and Prisms.

C&C appreciated.

01-01-2009, 01:00
Next up we have Fire Prism #1

And Jetbike Squad #1

The other Jetbike squad is currently undergoing conversion to have regular guardians as riders.

And the test model for the banshees

01-01-2009, 03:43
I too am just starting with Saim-Hann! I have 21 Jetbikes, 6 Vypers, 3 Shining Spears and 2 Fire Prisms sitting on my desk. I'll be keeping an eye on this log! Keep up the good work. :)

01-01-2009, 20:03
With that kind of a start, you should pick up the Atuarch Jetbiker. Nice looking kit and attached to those Spears he is wonderful.

01-01-2009, 20:46
And here is today's work:

I painted the belt tassels red to show the craftworld affiliation of that temple.
One of them has the cosmic serpent on it also. Would've done the rest of them but it didn't look so great.
Next up will be prism #2 followed by banshees.

And a sneak peek of a little side project:

04-01-2009, 04:41
Well... here as promised is the second of the Prisms. I tried a different approach for the cannon itself this time. Wanted it to look more as if it were charging/ready to fire...

And I finished these a little early.

crazy, redheaded sword-wielding warrior women... my favorite kind.

So later tonight i'll be working on a Farseer on foot. and start work on one of the three Wave serpents I purchased last weekend.

04-01-2009, 23:43
Last night's work has yielded a Farseer.

Wave serpents to come later.

Any thoughts on the seer? Good? Bad? Ugly?

04-01-2009, 23:50
Looking good.

05-01-2009, 01:08
looks great so far, and should handle nicely in 5th ed. there's nothing like zooming across the battlefield and denying an objective on the last turn :)

05-01-2009, 03:36
Looks good, feel free to check out the old log in my signature for inspiration :) Keep it on!

05-01-2009, 04:51
Thanks guys.
@redyellowpinkgreen: I know exactly what you mean. One of my favorite tactics.
@Leonathion: I've seen your log. And your stuff looks amazing.

And next we have Wave Serpent #1

05-01-2009, 06:32
Looks good, but I'd like to advocate some shading on the red. It looks a little flat at the moment. Just a bit of shade in the recesses of the vehicles would make them look so much better.

The Dire Avengers and the Jetbikers look very good. Perhaps the Banshees and the Farseer could have benefited from a more thinned out paint, but still looking good.

Oh, and I want gemstones!:)

05-01-2009, 15:58
That actually saddens me a little. I did shade in the recesses for the Wave Serpent. Not enough i guess. And i have gemstones... everywhere. maybe my camera skills just suck. Could you maybe elaborate?

05-01-2009, 19:49
Oh, sorry, missed the gemstones. You've used the smaller ones. I'm more used to seeing the large gemstone-opportunity-parts being painted like gemstones.

I do, however still claim that the recesses of the red need darker shading. With perhaps Gryphonne Sepia or Devlan Mud?

06-01-2009, 04:25
alright. well i just started the second wave serpent so i'll give it a shot. thanks for the advice.

16-01-2009, 14:27
woo. page 12. I need to work faster.
So here is a WIP of the hull of Wave Serpent #2. I tried to shade the recesses more on this one. The Gems still need to be done before the first coat of hard coat. Then come decals. Then second coat of hard coat.

I've got work all weekend. Get a break from the Uni and my boss decides that that is a good reason to give me more hours. So... I should have more done on it sometime in the next week.:cries:

20-02-2009, 04:29
Right. So, i've been slacking off and not painting. I started back up today. Should have two serpents up tomorrow. Hopefully.
I also stripped my old Scorpions and will soon be repainting them. I had them the temple bright non-stealth green. I'm going for a more stealth looking design.
Should get some pics of them up here in a day or so.

20-02-2009, 09:22
How did I miss this log? Great stuff in here.

I really like the strong contrast of the red and black on the grav-tanks.

I'll also be keeping an eye out for that Jetbike Autarch.

20-02-2009, 18:03
I like your eldar.........it's weird, but I am doing almost the exact same army :)
You dire avengers look nice as does all the rest of your stuff.
How did you paint the fire dragons? Did you start off white? They turned out really nice. Those are the ones I am having the most problems with. Keep up the great work. I look forward to seeing your updates.

22-02-2009, 19:56
Those avengers look gorgeus.
BUT i'm not fan of the farseer hand conversion doesn't look right.

23-02-2009, 20:02
Thanks guys.
@lvyoda: I started with a white prime coat. Based with blazing orange. Highlighted first with a mix of blazing and fiery orange. and then again with fiery orange. the helmets are just Sunburst yellow over white.

So... unexpected work has prevented me from getting any painting done. I'll be in until 11 tonight so i should get some picks up in the early hours tomorrow.

23-02-2009, 20:29
Great.....thanks for the help. Good luck with the painting and update.

25-02-2009, 04:43
Great stuff! Your painting is very crisp. The Farseer looks awsome and I can't wait to see that side project come together. :)

25-02-2009, 19:12
Okay. So i finally managed to sit down and paint. Had a bad weekend. The mad dinosaur that lives in my room is very sick. Spent half the weekend at the vets office. But he is on the mend and things are getting back to normal.

First off, we have the first Serpent with a few modifications to the paint and outfitted with new weapons.

And the second Serpent:

So let me know what you think. I should have the test model for the new Scorpions up later tonight.

26-02-2009, 09:17
The Wave Serpents look great.

I like how each Grav Tank has it's own unique pattern of Red/Black areas. It allows each one to look unique without losing the cohesiveness of the color scheme.

26-02-2009, 16:18
Thanks. My general idea with the tank schemes is that each pilot/gunner crew would get to kit out their own tanks and paint them how they wanted it to look. I'm going to carry this concept into the bikes once i start converting and fixing them.

26-02-2009, 18:03
I also like those as well. The black and red really look nice together. Keep up the great work.

04-03-2009, 23:50
Thanks guys.
So here are a few pics of the Scorpion Test model.
I love the Scorpion aspect but hate the codex colors as they are supposed to be a "stealth" type unit and I just don't see how bright green and yellow are conducive to stealth.
So... here is my take:

Let me know what you think. I should have the Jetbike rider conversion test up in a day or two.

05-03-2009, 08:30
The Scorpion looks good. Definitely more stealthy than bright green and yellow.

Is the jetbike conversion the Farseer (or Autarch) that we saw in pieces on the first page?

05-03-2009, 14:07
@Gany: Well, that conversion is a Farseer. The conversion i was referring to having pics up for is putting normal guardians on my horde of old jetbikers. I should get pics of the Farseer up soon also.

05-03-2009, 14:22
Serpents are looking real nice! :)

And Good Omens is a fantastic book! Pity about Terry Pratchett though...

14-03-2009, 22:34
Thanks to some sort of freak electrical occurrence, all of my lamps managed to blow at once. And i don't mean the bulbs. The lamps themselves shorted out. So, I get paid in 3 days and will be purchasing new ones. Then i'll be capable of getting some painting done and I should have pics up that night.

@juicytomatoes: I'd never read anything by Pratchett before that. Picked up the book because Gaiman is one of my favorite authors. And yes, it's a fantastic book.

07-04-2009, 20:56
After a short, unwilling break from all things 40k, I'm back with new stuff.

Here is the first model for my new jetbikes.

I'm very happy with the rider. Not so much with how the bike turned out. I've done those decals hundreds of times and i've never had them bubble like that on me before.
Any suggestions on that form anyone with decal applying experience?

This is what the first 6 man squad will look like. Should have them up in the next few days.
And the second squad will have a slightly different scheme and be up by this weekend. Hopefully. The Farseer conversion has seen some setbacks. He's been stripped and is now being painted again. Still not sure with how i'm going to paint his bike either.

Anyways. C&C welcome and appreciated.

07-04-2009, 22:20
I would never call myself 'experienced', but that effect has happened to me before when the water has dried with the decal not on the surface (obvious, I know, but I'm getting there :P).

Did you wet the area you were placing the decal on first? If you drown that surface then it normally pulls the decal to the surface as it dries from underneath. Sorry if that's no help...

07-04-2009, 23:42
@rewolf31: Actually, I've never heard that before. I was putting it on a dry surface. Thanks, mate. I'll be sure to do that on the next one.
Which by the by. I have all 5 of the other bikes based red, now i've got to start the striping. So expect pics sometime later tonight.

07-04-2009, 23:52
These are just beautifully painted. Kudos.

As for the decals, the rewolf31's suggestion works for me.

I'd suggest going over the visible film with the color underneath the transfer, to hide the edges more. It adds time, but it makes them look much better. Ive done that with all of my shields on my bretonnians, and it makes the water slide transfer film much less visible.

Good luck!

08-04-2009, 06:51
The bike looks good, I really like the Guardian Defenders on those bikes.

I also concur with wetting the surface before applying any transfers. I also take a paper towel and dab the decal lightly to grab any excess moisture from the decal.

27-04-2009, 13:34
looking good man, looking really good.

28-04-2009, 19:46
well, exams are done. Summer is started. Which means... I should be able to get a ton of painting done soon. Hopefully.
I keep getting distracted. Started reading The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. Got addicted. It's a problem.

And here are the new shiny devices.

Got another 6 man of these on the way. Plus repainting the scorpions, the farseer and another serpent or two.
I've also got a commission job starting friday painting some grey knights for a friend.
And i'm about to start painting some werewolves for Hordes.

C&C welcome as always. Cheers.

28-04-2009, 22:31
great work, i love seeing good Saim hann armies, how did you paint the red?

29-04-2009, 09:30
The bikes look great! really nice work on the riders and bases.

29-04-2009, 13:10
Thanks guys.

@bob: The red on the bikes is just several layers of thinned down blood red over white.
The red on the bikers is blood red over scab red then washed with baal red.

Az has hot date tonight. No painting to be had.
Maybe tomorrow i'll paint something and put it up.

29-04-2009, 14:00
The Jetbikes look great! The grassy bases contrast well with the red on the bikes.

29-04-2009, 16:33
The Jetbikes look nice Azriel45. The only the that lets me down a bit is the decalls. You should paint over the edges a bit to make them blend in more with the painted areas. Also, try using Micro Set and Micro Sol to help you apply them better and let them set a bit better.

It really helps on my decalls. Good luck and keep up the good work!

Where do you get that stuff?

Thanks much, sir. I'd actually been having some issues with the decals on the bikes. My methods on the tanks have come out fine so far, but they didn't want to do right on the bikes.
I'll def give this stuff a shot.

29-04-2009, 21:03
Looks really god. Nice consistant colour scheme

29-04-2009, 21:13
Micro sol and set are the kings of decal work - here's what I do

Step 1: Varnish the area you wish to decal with GLOSS varnish

Step 2: Apply Micro set to the area

Step 3: While micro set is wet, apply transfer and get into desired position

Step 4: Allow to dry

Step 5: Apply Mirco sol IF required - dab the transfer while micro sol applied to get it to bond better to a curved/uneven surface

Step 6: Apply MATT varnish to the area

Step 7: Decal applied! (And decal edges have diappeared! Magic)

19-06-2009, 15:24
So, I haven't touched the Eldar in a while. I've been painting some Grey knights for a friend. And after I finish the Knights, Stern, a Librarian and a Chaplain, then I'll get back to the Eldar.

@Spekkiebig: I did grab some Micro Set and Sol on Amazon. I've played with it on some test models and I'm impressed. Can't wait to see how much it improves my Eldar. Thanks for the tip.

And here are some pics of what I've been doing lately:

Painting these for a friend like I said. I think he's planning on using them in addition to a Black Templar army he's painting.

I'll have the whole squad up later tonight I hope.

Let me know what you think.

19-06-2009, 16:08
Nice work on the Grey Knight Terminator, but i have one to nag about. It's the sword. I don't know what you've trid to achieve with the motled effect but it doesn't work :eyebrows:. I think if jou just repaint it blue and ad a nice highlight it would look much better, but that's just my opinion. It's nice to see you painting again by the way.

19-06-2009, 16:25
Very good Eldar log so far.
Keep it up! :)
Just 2 little questions:
1. Where did you buy the 'stickers' for the jetbikes?
2. What red do you use for the Saim-Hann army.

Would be great to know =)

EDIT: 5* for your log

19-06-2009, 16:48
@spekkiebig: i'm working on some tests for other versions of the blades currently. That was my try at "haze of energy". I'll put up a few versions and see what is more liked.

@schnatzke4: 1) Decal sheets normally come with the box sets of eldar stuff. ie. tanks, aspect warriors, guardians. Otherwise, most third party retailers carry them.
2) The red I use is the Citadel Blood Red thinned down and applied in several coats over a white base.

pics of other blades to follow soon.

19-06-2009, 17:49
alright. here are some other versions of the blade. Let me know what you think guys.

test #1:

Brother_Chaplian Raimo
19-06-2009, 18:06
#2. No question. Far and away the best.

19-06-2009, 18:13
lovin the wave serpent

19-06-2009, 20:30
I agree with Brotherr_Chaplian_Raimo #2 is the best.

19-06-2009, 20:53
Hey, Azriel's back!

The second one is definitely the best. It really has that glowing power weapon effect.

20-06-2009, 01:11
Progress Progress Progress.

and choice #2 it is.

Two of them still need to be "armed" but it's still progress. :)

So, I've been painting and listening to the Black Symphony by Within Temptation w/ the Metropole Orchestra. Which might be becoming one of my favorite bands. If you haven't heard them, you should check em out.

20-06-2009, 10:26
Grey knights looking good. Blades look good, though I would have gone for version No.3.

20-06-2009, 15:19
Personally I liked #3. However, the guy I'm painting these for liked #2.
Thanks folks for all the kind words.

I've got work from now until 6 tonight. I should get
something up after that though.

14-07-2009, 22:15
I'm back.

First, the updates.

Here be Grey Knights:

The squad is done. Finally.

And next for the commission work is:

The librarian.

Also there will be a Chaplain and Brother captain Stern of the Grey Knights.

Sadly my Eldar are still on the back burner. Once I finish up with these Marines, I'll be working on Privateer Press armies (I recently acquired the starter armies of Cryx, Circle, Khador and Everblight)
These of course will be getting their own log.

As today is my B-day, I'll be out all night. Hopefully, I'll get more pics up tomorrow evening after work.

oh, and Let me know what you think.

21-07-2009, 17:40
Hail Warseer.

A quick update:

The Chaplain is still very very WIP.

Although, I'm happy with how the metallics have been coming so far.

C&C appreciated.

21-07-2009, 22:07
there really good. I like the chaplin alot. What chapter?

22-07-2009, 02:33
I'm painting them for a friend. The librarian will be Imperial fists, and the Chaplain will be Black Templars.

04-08-2009, 00:26
Hail warseer.

The chaplain's torso section is done.
Overall, i'm very pleased with how it's turned out. He's more or less a clone of the codex one, but that's what Grindar wanted.

The lines came out thicker than i'd like on the tabard scroll thing... but that's my smallest brush using very thin paint and it looks decent enough.

The shadowed areas on the skull actually look a good deal darker, but I can't seem to get a pic that shows it without looking really awful at the same time.

A taste of things to come.

I'll probably finish up the Librarian's torso section this evening before doing the chaplain's arms and halo.

Hopefully there will be pics up soon. I've got some people showing up in about an hour for some Warmachine/Hordes action.

14-09-2009, 04:01
Evening. Here are some pics. More will follow in the next few days.

Old pic I forgot to post:
