UPDATE: 2009 In Review on Page 14

ULTRAMARINE STATUS: POST 2
ORK STATUS: POST 3
IMPERIAL GUARD STATUS: POST 4

Welcome!

This is my second foray into a running Project Log. The first featured the very beginnings of my Fourth (read: Imperial Guard) 40K army, and I didn't keep up with it.
This log, is updated frequently (at least twice a week, unless I'm busy, or forgetful, or lazy :))

I've always wanted a running log of my progress. Not so much that I want to speed paint, but so much that I can see real progress.
With some encouragement from my friend, Ganymene (who has an excellent Eldar log here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169965)), I decided to finally get one up and running!

That being said, here's some basic info:
- I play Ultramarines, Orks, and Imperial Guard
- I have a n'ere used High Elf army routinely collecting dust that I must get back into..
- I have no pets, so no pictures of them

This is my "Official" workspace. I say that only because I originally cleared this table off for all things modeling/painting related

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/osupoker85/ProjectLog002.jpg
More often than not I will be sitting at this tiny table painting!

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/osupoker85/ProjectLog003.jpg
That is because my entertainment area is around the corner of the main "workspace". Damn positioning...

The new battlewagon gun mount is perfect for the top of that falcon. The tiny gun will have to do until I can fashion a larger gun for the BOOMgun.

I might hang a banner between the front prongs of the falcon with some sort of Anti-Pansy phraseology. Got any suggestions besides "DIE PANSIES!!"??

One last quick glimpse at a project down the pipe: An Ork Submersible for Apocalypse!

Step 1: Find an old Micro Machines Army Sub playset
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Profit!

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/osupoker85/ProjectLog.jpg

Note the boy for scale. I've got a ton of Plasticard, and plan on removing the rear propeller portion and extending the sub a bit. Hopefully I'll get started on that later this week.

That's all for now.

Those Masters of the Chapter look sweet.

I demand that you finish the Looted Wagon! :D

Also, the sub is going to be awesome. You definitely need to loot some weapons off the Battlewagons to make it extra killy.

And maybe put some Grots in the cruise missile hatches.

I'll try and get that done before I go randomly cutting plasticard and gluing it to the sub.....maybe...

New Nobz Set. Note: I LOVE THIS KIT.

And a micro machines sub? Got any pics of it open? I had many battle bases as a kid, but I never knew there was a sub!

Thanks. If they weren't so damned expensive I'd love to do a looted titan...but, yea...

Anyways, here's a pic of the sub interior. And yes, the cruise missiles actually fire! (An aspect I kind of want to keep in the final sub)

Do you plan on mounting some sort of orky deck gun. Maybe mounted on the elevator so it can be raised and lowered?

I have a few ideas for deck guns and such. The sub will pretty much just be a framework for the Submersible, so I dunno how much of the original model will be visible.

UPDATE:

I ran out of primer mid spray, so I only have one small update today.

I couldn't resist not painting my new favorite nob, so here he is.

I still have a good portion of the army bases and such. Ever have the tank that transformed into a mobile base? I do..and that will probably be built into a Skullhamma or some other big Ork vehicle.

I figure I'll need one more box of Nobs in order to get all the configurations that I want for the two units I eventually contemplate fielding. Boo to only having one kombi-skorcha on the sprues.

Anyways, those bushes will play prominently on the Snikrot model base, and I'll definitely be picking up a Battlefield Accessories kit sometime soon to start on the "sneaky" kommandos.

More pics up today or tomorrow.

Quick update.

No new pictures as of yet, haven't had a chance to go get some new batteries for the camera.

I have been working on painting the following:
- The other 4 nobs I recently acquired
- Snikrot
- Weirdboy

I also started initial work on the Ork Submersible, and armor plating and restructuring is coming along nicely. Will post pictures in the next few days.
I can't decide what to name the sub. At the moment, current front runner is "Da Red Orktober"

Main reason for the update is this. I recently saw Death Race, and after a few minutes realized that the filmmakers MUST play Orks, as every vehicle in that movie is a kitbashed work of art.
I found some inspiration in the movie... :)

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/osupoker85/deathrace_dread1.jpg

Slight sneak peak of something coming down the pipe rather soon...just need to pick me up another Battlewagon for the parts.
Anyone who has seen the movie knows exactly what I have in mind...Muahahahahaha....

You said guard... waiting for guard lol.

The orky stuff looks awesome. You should definitley keep the fireable cruise missile, it'd be a great addition to maybe include a grot bomb based off of it?

Should be great, can't wait to see it.

UPDATE: School + Work + Fallout 3 has kept me from updating in a little while, so here are the latest fruits of my labor.

ORK SUB: No more progress as of late, creative juices have been stalled to paint more rank and file troops, will start up again soon.

ORK BIG TANKER THINGY: See sub entry.

Now, onto the stuff I HAVE done...

Near finished Warboss. He is just missing some detail work on his pistols, and his final washes.

Snikrot's skin is the basis for which I will be painting/rewashing all of my future orks.
For those interested in the process it is as follows:
- Chaos Black primer
- 1-2 coats of Snot Green (enough to cover all of the black smoothly)
- 1 semi-drybrush coat of Goblin Green on the raised areas of the skin
- 1-2 heavy washes of Thraka Green
- 1 heavy wash of Gryphonne Sepia
- 1 light wash of Devlan Mud.

Here are the first four Kamo-Kommandos

As well as another three. The two non-camo ones will pretty much be covered head to toe in bush-suits.

The three near-complete models from each of my three near-completed squads. Trukk Boyz one (red band), Trukk Boyz two (orange band), and Shoota Boyz one. I will be painting my two 20+ boy slugga squads in purple and blue armbands respectively. Anyone get the reference?
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/osupoker85/ProjectLog034.jpg

From left to right: Boy, 'Ard Boy, Nob. I wanted to do something different for the 'Ard Boyz besides just slapping on some armor pads, so thus Black Orcs will be used. While they are a tad larger, I always envisioned that the boyz who were smart enough to pick up 'eavy armor would have seen more battle, and thus be larger then the other boyz.
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/osupoker85/ProjectLog035.jpg

And last but not least, DA PROFFIT HIMSELF!!...well, mostly.
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/osupoker85/ProjectLog036.jpg

I'm torn at the moment how to model him. Which of the following options seems more epic: Thraka about to snap a guardsman in half in his giant Klaw? Or Thraka stepping on a guardsman?

Oh, and this is specifically for Remoah until I get a chance to put up more Guard pics. Here is Lt. Colonel Marko of the 173rd Cadian Guard

EDIT: Awesome Officer!

Astynax, Master of the Armory/Arsenal was the very last MotC I painted, as my boxed set neither contained the weapon loadouts or the special head for the guy. I always meant to call GW to get the pieces sent to me, but my lazy self sat the box on my computer desk for 6 months until I accidentally threw it away.

His power sword is just a basic sword from either the Assault squad set, or commander set. The official piece is supposed to be the sword stuck in the ground, but I already had two masters at rest, thought it needed some more action.

Since I didn't use the giant Storm Shield on Alathan (instead I just put a bolt pistol), I wanted to use it for Astynax, problem being that it is a right handed shield, but his left hand was free. I was about to mix up some green stuff and make a new arm, but it turned out the shield fits perfectly against the body and looks pretty natural. Some super glue and bam, new model. You can tell its just glued on if you look directly above the model at very close view, otherwise it looks great with absolutely no GS required.

Thanks for the compliments, I really enjoyed painting the officer. He's the Baneblade commander from the Baneblade box.

C: Drinking a headless Guardsmen's blood from his neck. Final Answer.

Did you end up pinning him or just use green stuff to hold him together? Also, I never realized you had that many Orks stockpiled in those boxes. How many points is that?

The Khorne Lord is coming along nicely. *cracks whip* Paint the Demon Prince! (he looks awesome) :D

ManusMarines
28-01-2009, 02:27
...I like that answer. Question is, how the hell do I model blood spurting? Or should I just make a straw out of GS?

Thraka's legs are pinned to his Torso. The rest is green stuff and super glue. I've still got to glue on the horns and his face, but that will happen after it is painted.

Total points for Orks if I were to field everything (illegally): just shy of 4400.

In comparison, I could potentially field 8250pts of Marines (without taking into account formations, nor the Imperial Guard detachment + Baneblade support)

Da WAAAAAAAAAAGH!! is gettin' bigga!!! (especially when you factor in 2 Stompas, the giant Tanka truck, and the sub...muahahahaha)

Huzzah!
Nob Loadout is as follows: 6 Nobz and a Painboy
- 2x Power Klaws & Sluggas, 3x Big Choppas & Sluggas, 1x Shoota/Skorcha & Choppa, 'Eavy Armor, Cybork Bodies, Waaaaaagh!! Banner, Stikkbombz

No bosspole in the unit, as they are almost always escorted by my Warboss.

After the painboy is done (washes drying now), that will give me 4 complete units.
- Nobz 1
- Trukk Boyz 1
- Trukk Boyz 2
- Shoota Boyz 1

Slooooowly getting there.

Also, Update on Ghazzie!!
- I finally decided on his pose. He will be mounted on the 60mm base, standing over a crushed sentinel, with a ripped open crew compartment, and he will be holding the pilot in his claws.

I'll prob start modeling it tomorrow, or possibly tonight if I can get through enough Henry James. Damn that man...

Oh, that's no Black Orc head. It's a normal nob head, but I added the Iron Gob, so it looks like a Black Orc head.

Oof, a long way to go before they are fully painted. But, now that the tournament has been pushed back, I think you may just be able to pull it off. I think the most time consuming thing is going to be all those Trukks (so much detail).

Oh, and I want to see those awesome Stormboyz painted up.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/osupoker85/ProjectLog058.jpg

Soooo much left to do.

I still need to:
- Assemble one more Trukk
- Purchase and assemble one more box of Stormboyz
- Purchase one box and assemble two boxes of Lootas
- Assemble 6-7 more boyz for Grimkill's Gladiators
- Paint a shoota mob (20), a trukk mob (11+Trukk), two loota mobs (20), two kopta squads (6 koptas), two more trukks, and 15 more Stormboyz.

HUZZAH!

Keep posted for my madness..

*UPDATE*!!!

Not much painting progress to speak of (midterms + papers = failboat), but I have been busy building.

First up, progress on Ghazzie!

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/osupoker85/ProjectLog066.jpg

This model is amazingly detailed. In the process of cleaning it and dry fitting now. I will definitely be assembling the model in two sub-assemblies: Bike and Boss. I will be taking my time on this model cause FW deserves some lovin'.

The warboss wasn't the only Forge World piece I ordered (I love the current exchange rate...). MISSILE SILO!
http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/osupoker85/ProjectLog067.jpg

As with the warboss, this silo is amazing. They didn't show size comparisons in the FW catalog or online so I took a chance. This thing is huge! I expect many battles will be fought over this piece.

And last but not least, here is a marine w/ some test colors for a new chapter I'm working on. It is very rough at the moment, but this is the general gist of the colors.

That leaves me with 10 boyz and a Nob to make for my Warboss' Trukk retinue. So close to being done building (for the moment). I should be able to knock out the second Shoota squad painting this week, as well as a Deffkopta or two...maybe.

Is the new Marine painted in Purple and Orange? If it is, good choice. I love those colors (but I think we already knew that :D).

As for the 'hill' that Ghazghkull is on, is it going to be rocks or grass? I think sinking his (40mm) base into the hill or building up the hill around his (40mm) base would be perfect.

Also, that Stormboy Nob is awesome. The dual Power Klaws are bad ass.

Current scheme is Necron Abyss for the armor (Purplish/bluish/gray), with Macharius Solar Orange for the trim, eagle, and eyes. Codex Gray makes up the interior of the shoulder pads. Unsure what to paint the backpack, but highlights for the model will be some regal blue on the armor, and some Fiery Orange/Sunburst yellow on the orange parts.

I was thinking it would be a dirt/rocky hill around him, with him standing on top. I think I will use some more GS and make it seem like he is sunken in.

Also, that Stormboy Nob is awesome. The dual Power Klaws are bad ass.

Hehe, he looks as if he fell of his bike and is sitting on the sidewalk, sulking :)

Seriously though, how solid is this model? I was under the impression that it had many fidly bits made out of resin. No snapped of bits or whatnot?

ManusMarines
24-02-2009, 19:45
OnnO: The vast majority of the bits are solid and it is easy to avoid snapping the resin pieces. However, some bits were not like the others.

There is a small pulley-ish bit that fits on his left shoulder that connects the Power Klaw system further.
The model isn't broken without it, but now it just looks like the spinny saw doesn't have a belt-fed connection.

There are also rather fragile ammo feeds from the bullet storage in the bike running up to the Dakka Guns.
I managed to snap one in half while trying to dry fit it, so now it looks like one gun is about to run dry. A cool effect, but not intended.

Otherwise, this model is great! I've got it fully assembled in three main pieces: Base, Bike, and Boss. I will be painting each separately and then attaching them at the end.

Stay tuned for pics!

Some sort of "Hands" or "Fist" successor, as Manus literally means "hand" or "fist" in Latin.

Scions of Manus is just a working name. Perhaps Disciples of Manus or something else would fit better. Although, Manus (FIST!) Marines sounds kinda cool...and strangely kinky.

**UPDATE**

While this week of midterms and preparation as such has kept my painting time down, I do have some awesome news.

The local game store I frequent had to move to a smaller location, and in the process decided to sell off a few of their awesome tables.

I managed to snag one of these tables (with contributions from my friends).

It is slightly larger than 4'x8'. I think the piece of MDF that makes up the table top measures around 4.25' x 8.25'.
Much nicer (and taller!) than our previous set up of a 4'x8' piece of plywood on card tables.

It is now the centerpiece of a constant sloooow renovation of my gaming room.

Next up for renovations: Finish installing the 3 large banks of Florescent lighting to replace the random lamps, clean out a giant old entertainment center for model storage, and possibly pick up a display case.

**UPDATE 5/15**

Wow, it has been a very long time since I updated this thing.

School is done until August, so perhaps I can get going on my painting updates again. Perhaps...

Anyways, with the release of the new Guard Codex I have temporarily shelved the Orks in favor of getting the 173rd Cadians up to a tabletop standard.

With that being said, here is my latest progress on the Guard.

I plan to run 4+ squads of Infantry Squads in Chimeras with Meltaguns. Here is the 3rd of 4 such squads already painted up (with proper squad numbers and such).

Now with some of the new Command Squad goodies there should be some more variation in Sergeants and Officers (as in the last bald guy :)) in future squads.

Although, having similar poses/loadouts for all of a platoon seems like an unintentional nice move on my part....maybe.

Working on the command platoon for the Melta squads to fully finish off that platoon (until I purchase/build/paint the remaining 4 chimeras needed...sigh), and then I might just lay down the base clothing/armor on the last two squads. Yay, summer vacation. Updates hopefully later.

Absolutely you can make suggestions, Dimitrios. I do need to pick up a finer detail brush, as the last one kinda broke a few months ago. The smaller brush would definitely lead to some more consistency between markings.

I've literally been painting just about everything Sentinel-sized and smaller with the same brush I picked up when the detail brush died. $2.99 special at a hobby store.

It isn't really visible in the picture, but the Bionics were washed with Black, Brown, Red, and Blue washes, giving it a slightly oily effect.

Only thing that caught my eye are the freehand figures on the shoulder pads, which could be "cleaner". I haven't tried that myself, so I guess its rather difficult :-)

I absolutely agree about the freehand markings, especially the "skulls" on the command squads. My lazy self still hasn't had a chance to get up to the hobby store for a fine detail brush. Today isn't looking so good either :)

I have the day off Wednesday, so barring any insane events, I shall be picking up that, perhaps a fine tipped white sharpie, and hopefully my pack of IG Advisors.

No, I'm not dead.

After churning out almost 75+ models, a Leman Russ, and a Basilisk in a few weeks time my painting juices kind of dried up.

After taking a much needed (although short) break, I'm back at finishing off the guard!

Picture updates will follow shortly (perhaps as early as tomorrow night, EST).

Updates include:
- Squad markings on the first LasCannon squad.
- Completion of the second LasCannon squad.
- Assembly/Priming/Near completion of the first of several Valkyries
- Assembly of a second Chimera
- Assembly of a third Sentinel

That is all for now. Pictoral updates soon!

Fixed that for you. ;)

The Valkyrie looks awesome! I think the highlighting really makes the difference. Now that I have had a look at it under full light, I can really see how nice the whole thing looks.

The posing on the Sentinels, combined with the fences gives the feeling that they are sneaking through a city and setting up for the battle. I also really like the way the Lascannon came out. The weathering gives it a very realistic look.

Now, let's see that army shot!

In regards to the lascannon, I've come to love the effect a heavy wash of Badab Black has on metallic paints. It dulls them just enough, but the results have been awesome.

The point total is just over/under 2000 if I throw everything on the table. It would actually make for a pretty coherent, functional army.

Up next on the painting block is finishing off the last Autocannon squad, then working on the Sentinels.

- I've been side tracked a bit from painting as I just HAD to put together the first Bastion and Aegis Lines that I added to the Planetstrike/Terrain collection. More will follow :)
- Resumed painting a bit on a Drop Pod for my Ultramarines. 75% done, will post pictures later.

The general plan is to firstly finish off this current 1750 Guard list completely.

After that I believe I will be having one unit from each of my three armies on painting table at once.

After I finish this last Infantry squad I will have the Stormtrooper/Veterans squad, and the two sentinels to finish.

When THOSE are finished, I will probably be working on whatever new Guard unit I purchased, a SM Tactical Squad, and the final stuff on a Shoota Boyz squad.

If you find some really tiny ones, you could use those for the 'centuries of service' markings. That would also break up the large surfaces if you didn't want enormous U's on both shoulders.

I also never realized how much detail the Culexus Assassin model had on it.

No offense taken. I'm still unsure on the sword. I might just take it back to black and try to highlight it to make it seem like it is glowing black.

I do still need to highlight the ridges and flowing nature of his cloak.

*UPDATE*

After messing around with basing ideas for the new WIP Space Marine Jump Pack Captain I'm building (pics up after I get the last bitz order in), I decided to sit down and paint one of the sentinels.

Voila!

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/osupoker85/Plog106.jpg
As my guard army was originally designed for cities of death, it's about time I started adding some more urban elements besides gray/dusty bases.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/osupoker85/Plog107.jpg
Despite providing some "cover" to the sentinel, the wall also acts as a bullet shield for the pilot-on-break hiding behind it.
Tsk, tsk. He's even left his door open.
Also, generic sentinel "Ace of Spades" freehand painted on the door.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/osupoker85/Plog108.jpg
This sentinel is the first walker of the 1st Recon element (R11).

That sure isn't water in that canteen. Amasec, anyone?
Notice his eyes rolling into the back of his head.

I fully blame his drunken nature for my uncanny ability to ALWAYS and ONLY hit with one of the two Autocannon shots from this sentinel.

I first tried sculpting a cigarette onto a bare hand: That did not turn out well.
I second tried sculpting a beer bottle: That also did not turn out well.

Solution: unattached canteen from the bitz box!

Not to be outdone by his fellow recon squadmate, this pilot has affixed an Ace of Clubs playing card sequence to his door.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/osupoker85/Plog113.jpg
The height difference between the two sentinels almost let's the first one shoot over this crouching one.

Nice work on the Sentinels!

The pose on the crouching one is awesome (even if it does seem physically impossible). I also like the cards on their doors, it is an very characterful way of tying them together, and fits the theme very well.

Thanks, Eriekiels! It has been a slow, steady process, but the initial 1750 list is one unit away from being 100% painted. Ridiculous!

And I promise that the Kommandos will be the first non-guard unit I finish up, after this Space Marine JP Captain :)

Nice Kasrkin man. I think the sergeant's sword is a bit gammy, and his eyes look a bit big.

The sword is a bit fragile as it is. It came rather mangled in the box, and the current status is the result of trying to bend it back into place. :(

I might just pick up another Sergeant model.

I'll post another picture tomorrow sometime, as I missed that HUGE eye. His other one is properly sized, and now so is his right.

The Stormtroopers are looking good! I really like the orange visors, they contrast very well with the blue and gray.

I agree that the sergeant's sword needs to be straightened out, but it is a pain to do that with metal models. Maybe slice it off and attach a plastic blade?

I love the Kommandoes! Very characterful, I particularly like the one hiding in the ammo crate.

The Sternguard are looking good. Giving them all Mark VIII torsos really suits an important unit like that. I also like the fact that they all have Bolters with scopes.

For the white, you can either paint the helmets Bleached Bone and then highlight with Skull White, or just wash the skull white with a watered down gray. Or if you want to add a bit of color to the white, you can water down a wash, brush it all over the helmet, then highlight the edges with some more Skull White.

His bike is currently assembled in two major sections (which will be painted separately prior to final attachment).

I don't believe I'll get much of anything painting related done tomorrow, but if I do I'll be sure to post.

Tonight's time was spent drawing against my friend Ganymene on the 6th turn of Capture and Control/DoW mission. Good times!

Like that Warboss Manus.

Thanks, Kibbles! He is far to sweet a model to let sit so long. Shame on me.

Also, the only reason I positioned the Sternguard Sergeant's arm like that is because on every other Sergeant with that PF it is pointing forwards.
It seemed a bit unnatural to have him pointing forward with one arm, while firing forward with the other.
The pointing finger hurts the pose a bit, I know. It still feels dramatic though, like he's just about to raise his arm and point at a new target.

I swear to God that you have some special forum ability that lets you insert replies in between those already posted, as I somehow ALWAYS miss your replies.

I chose to do the Sternguard in plastic after rummaging through my bitz box the one day and discovering 3 Mk.8 torso pieces. They just screamed out "VETERANS!", and so I ordered 2 more and used them.

The metal models do have some awesome sculpts (particularly the PF sarge), but I had to go with these guys.

Once my Apocabitz order finally gets here I will be converting up the last 5 members of the squad. This will include two regular bolters w/ scopes, as well as three more Combi-Meltas.

Lots of work around the house has once again nearly eliminated painting time. We'll see how the rest of tonight goes.

Thanks, Kibbles. It's ridiculous how many wounds that squad can put down, even more when I make the 3rd regular flamer.

In it's current state the unit (with Straken) can put out:
- 2x STR 4, AP 5 templates
- 1x STR 5, AP 4 template
- 2x STR 3, AP - lasgun shots
- 2x STR 3, AP - Shotgun shots
OR 1x STR 7, AP 2 Plasma shot.

And that is all before Straken charges in, giving the unit Furious Charge and slapping things around with his 5 attacks at STR 7 on the charge, ignoring armor saves.

As per Ganymene's request, here are some pictures of the Ironclad Dreadnought.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/osupoker85/Plog153.jpg
Here is the loadout I will usually be running him as: DCCW w/ Heavy Flamer, Seismic Hammer w/ Heavy Flamer.

BURN! KILL! MAI....errr, FOR THE EMPEROR!

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/osupoker85/Plog154.jpg
Side view of the Seismic Hammer. The thing just looks goofy from the front (four-fingered death punch!), but from the side actually looks pretty menacing.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/osupoker85/Plog155.jpg
Alternate weapon loadouts. The Chainfist is just ridiculous.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/osupoker85/Plog156.jpg
Close up of the re-cut DCCW. This one is far, far superior to the original dreadnought fist.

Still to do:
- Drill the Hurricane Bolters
- Mount some sort of symbol on that unsightly glue spot on the Hammer
- General clean up
- Some base enhancement

That's just about it for tonight. The Warboss is glaring at me, but I'm in a slight painting funk (read: tired!), so I probably won't get back to work on him for another day or so.

Thanks, Lazuli!

No update on the captain's work, as I was concentrating on something else...

WARBOSS UPDATE!!!!

The bike is completely finished! Just need to finish off the base and he will be 100% ready to use in-game! WAAAAAAAAGH!!

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/osupoker85/Plog157.jpg
I might need to slap another coat of Badab Black on the engine section to get it to (perfectly) match the front handlebars/spokes/etc. Otherwise, works pretty well!

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/osupoker85/Plog158.jpg
The guns might look mismatched right now, but when on the special base they are level.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/osupoker85/Plog159.jpg
Unsure why this one turned out blurry...maybe because the bike is ridiculously fast??

Nice stuff here, Manus. I have to admit I prefer your Orks to your Marines, but both are pretty cool and the posing is excellent. That biker boss looks proper rugged - he's definitely going to be smashing some faces. ;D

Thanks, Corrode! Honestly, I have to admit that I prefer my orks to my marines (in terms of paint jobs, at least). Marines were my first army, so now it seems that I'm not so much painting my Marines, as I am trying to clean them up with new paint jobs.

With the biker boss done, time to put in some work on other projects, like the Jump Pack Captain.

Thanks, Kory! I'm happy to see him finished after about a 9-month delay to getting to paint him. The metal technique is so easy, and so very effective. So much so, that I plan to paint most of the trucks and such the same way. Tin -> Boltgun -> Blood Red. Seems to work great!

And definitely go with that squad. It kills...EVERYTHING.

*UPDATE*

I finally got my hands on a can of Easy-Off Oven Cleaner (the no fume version, don't worry ;)).

That being said, my horribly overpainted Calgar model just emerged from a 2 hour soak, and looks just about brand new! This stuff is awesome!

Off of that conclusion, I believe I've made the dumbest/brightest idea I've had yet, and decided to soak just about every single one of my metal Space Marines HQ models.

Yup...every one. Even the Masters of the Chapter. Looking at them thoroughly, I came to the realization that I wasn't really happy with any of their paintjobs.

That means the following models are now soaking and will soon receive brand new (and slightly more talented ;)) paint jobs:
- Marneus Calgar
- 4x Masters of The Chapter
- 3x Honor Guard, 1x Chapter Banner, 1x Chapter Champion
- Terminator Captain w/ LC
- Terminator Librarian

*UPDATE*

The first step is done. All Space Marine HQ and character models have been stripped.

Now comes the painting....

Just waiting on the primer to dry, and then it is down to business. Well, after I get home from work at least.

Pictorial updates later tonight, perhaps.

I also primed the Catachan command squad, as well as Lord Commissar.

*UPDATE with PICTURES!*

Alrighty. Despite an apparent lack of progress on the forum end of my log, I assure you all that I have been working on the recently stripped Ultramarines.

And now for some proof! He is still PIP, but work is coming along nicely on the first of the Masters of the Chapter, Alathan.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk232/osupoker85/Plog166.jpg

I still have plenty of work to do on him. He needs washes, some more highlights, work on the axe, facial work, Backpack work, as well as finishing up his Storm Shield.

I'm sure my poker game tonight will run late, so there won't be any more pictures tonight, probably tomorrow though!

Inevitably, Marines must die. And that is why I picked up the "Marine Casualties" pack a few weeks ago and am finally getting around to painting them!

ManusMarines
04-08-2009, 18:49
The initial highlight I used on the Drop Pod and Dreadnought was a 1:1 mix of Ultramarines Blue and Skull White.

The last few UM posted have been with a straight SW grey, as it was late and I didn't feel like mixing up a batch of the UM/Skull White stuff.

Is it too much?

Wow, you really nailed those cloaks, they look great!

How does the Space Wolf Gray look in real life, is it any different from the picture? Because it looks fine on my screen. I have always liked the extreme highlighting technique, it really makes the models pop.

I take it the Masters of the Chapter are going to be Honor Guard? If not, they should be. ;)

It is almost identical to real life. I wasn't sure at first because it is magnitudes brighter than the UM Blue/Skull White highlight on the drop pod and dreadnought. Now that I like the SW Gray, it appears I will be re-highlighting the Pod and Dread. /Sad panda

I take it the Masters of the Chapter are going to be Honor Guard? If not, they should be. ;)

I do have a full 5-man Honor Guard Squad now (3x Guard, 1x Chapter Champion, 1x Chapter Banner Bearer) that I will use if/when I want some extra punch to go with a random chapter master.

However, I do believe I will be fielding the Masters of the Chapter as Honor Guard when I bust out Calgar in anything but Apocalypse. Nice suggestion..

Another night, another Master of the Chapter completed!

Presenting, the freshly repainted Jothux, Master of the Fleet!

Yea, that head reminds me of the Terminator as well, Kibbles.

Past couple of days have been quite busy, so my painting time has been quite low. Also, I rediscovered how much Left 4 Dead kicks ass, which also explains my lack of painting :p

Anyways, here is what I have been able to accomplish:

The Vet Squad is now 99.9% complete! I need to find another Melta backpack for the second gunner, though. Looks like one more blister is needed..

Back detail of the Melta Vet/Storm Trooper. The troopers have been some of my favorite guard models to paint, yet.

Here is progress on the first 5 of an Assault Squad. I have 15 more to paint after this one...grrr.

Remind me tomorrow to take a picture of my current Battle Company progress. I have all the infantry models, just not all the Rhinos yet.

And that's all for tonight. I also picked up an built another Bastion. After I finish the Assault Marines (just the 5) I will probably start working on the massive backlog of Terrain painting that needs to be done, all while burning through a 40 hour work week and the start of school once more. I'm pretty sure my camera is broken (FML!), so detailed pictorial updates will cease until I purchase a new one (read: when I get my student aid check :)).

However, I set up all my Marine models before I went to work today, and it would be a shame to take them all down w/o giving you a peak at the full army.

So until I can get a new camera, a cell phone picture will have to do. *apologies*

- Primed: 2 Chimeras, Stormtrooper, Ironclad Dreadnought, JP Captain, Aegis Walls, etc.
- Clipped and went through about 20 different sprues laying about, as well as reorganized my bitz boxes.

Tonight I will quickly bang out that last Veteran, and start on the JP Captain...that is if I don't play a game.

*UPDATE*

Posting updates to a visual log without pictures is kind of like a blind guy watching porn: You get to hear what is going on, but can't fully picture it :(

My student loan refund is "being processed", so a camera should be in my hands no later than another week and a half.

I apologize for the lack of pictures, but the drought continues.

I did manage to finish off the Jump Pack Captain in between my first few days of f classes, so he will be making an appearance as soon as I get photographically equipped once more.

The last Meltagunner Veteran/Stormtrooper has been completed, and will join the rest of his waiting squad.

Starting to finish off the 5-man assault squad and start working on the Ironclad, as well as a few Chimeras :)

*UPDATE*

Fear not, my picture-deprived followers! I got my student aid check today, and once the funds are available for use (tomorrow morning!) I will be heading to Best Buy to pick up a shiny new camera!

NEW CAMERA! (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9252211&type=product&id=1218068778550)

That being said, I did make some more painting progress.
- I finished the rest of Straken's Command Squad (or, effectively, any Command Squad that will utilize 3-4 flamers)
- Between Se7en and Total Recall, I also managed to start and finish a second Chimera for my forces. Yayz.
- I assembled what amounts to 10 troopers with special weapons, as well as two more officers/sergeants, and a scratch-built Master of Ordnance. They will be primed shortly.

I just need to pick up another Heavy Weapons Platoon in order to fully put in to effect the first phase of Mechanizing my guard. Huzzah!

Updates (WITH PICTURES!!!!!) tomorrow!

Pictures dammit!

:p

Forgive me, my new camera had to charge its rechargeable battery!

Yes, the picture drought is over! Ahh, sweet, sweet Kodak 10.2 MP camera!

Somethings might look slightly different until I fully get the hang of it, but bare with me.

To kick things off, I present Captain Brosious, equipped with Jump Pack, Relic Blade, and Storm Shield!

*UPDATE* MOAAAAR!

Here is the second of four chimeras. It is only missing my traditional massive wash of Badab Black, basic highlighting, as well as squad markings.

We also have the completed Special Weapons section of my Veteran/Stormtrooper squad. As they are now, I can field max Meltas in either the Veteran Squad (3) or a Stormtrooper Squad (2). Yayz.
I will probably end up leaving them as a Cadian Veteran squad, and convert up a Lucas Bastonne model to go with them. Hmmm...options...

Here is the completed command squad for Col. Straken (or one of my Mech Platoon Command Squads)
