View Full Version : Q&A with Jervis

Hello Warseers, (again, because some kind mod. moved this without reading it)

For those of you that have seen this month's White Dwarf, Warpcon is taking place in a fortnight and Jervis and someone one else will be staging a Q&A. We're trying to get some questions answered, including some rules questions such as what is the real answer of the drop pod hull issue.

I'll have the whole weekend to follow the guys around and try and get everything answered.

Don't ask any questions about why Army X is better than Army Y, or why GW is so expensive .Rules q's and model releases etc. are welcome.

Brother Gabriel

Pointless question. That's like asking "Will the Argos Catalogue get better?"

Try do GW have any plans to encourage, support and reward their veteran base?

Can trukks with the ram actually Ram or only Tank Shock?
Can Deffrollas be used in a Ram or inly in Tank Shock?

Do SoB, GK and =][= allies gain the benefits from the Salamanders special character? (Forgot his name)
Does Legion of the Damn gain the benefits? (For the same reason, they don't share the Salamanders's stockpile of equipment)
How does the sustained attack for daemons work in relation the Grey Knights. Is it still valid?
Why do the Sisters and Grey Knights not get a mention in the main rule book fluff section?

I'd like to hear about what plans, if any, there are to rectify the massive incongruities between the Imperial Codexes as far as weapon stats, transport capacities, Org Chart slots, etc. The FAQ answer of 'eh, whatever, do what you want' is massively unsatisfying at the moment.

Most of these have been answered or are stupid.

Jervis is going to be very bored :P

Is there a plan for a more organised approach to FAQs, erratas and 5th edition/old codex compatability issues, so that they tackle the questions that are being asked alot?
In particular, any plans to do something with the assorted marine codexs, so they all have the same assault cannons, land raiders, storm shields etc?

Can you define "army", to deal with the various army wide special rules that kick in due to special characters? Vulkan + Inq. allies is the best example, but a general answer would be better.

Fortune, guide etc, ie powers cast on a unit. What happens when an IC joins or leaves the unit? Again, a general answer to cover more instances would be better.

EDIT. No Retreat and multiple combats- Was it really intended that powerful units eg Tyranid MC- take wounds from this if the weak units- eg gaunt horde- they are supporting gets badly beaten in combat?

I'm sure I'll think of a few more.

Seconding on all questions regarding decent FAQs (including wargear compatibility; if it can change a rule, it can change a points cost, so there's no excuse) and release estimates thereof.

What is the general design philosophy for 5th edition? Is this era of Special Characters everywhere to be expected with future codecies, or was it just a (Ultra)Marine thing?

Which codexes were designed with 5th in mind, and how much of an idea did the designers all have for each book at the time of writing of how 5th would work?

After the Baneblade, the Stompa, and the virtually-guaranteed Valkyrie, will we be seeing any other plastic titan / flyer / formerly FW-only models? (C'mon, Trygon, Trygon, Trygon...)

Ok guys just stop the silly questions

Not really question, but I'd like to see somewhere the big question about Righteous Zeal (Black Templar) solved (as the formulation is not great) : if I have accuratly understood the rule, the direction of the move is compulsary, not the act to move (as it's a consolidation move, and so you can always choose to stay still). Could the rule be rephrased for a better understanding ?

One other thing : can it be graciously allowed for the Emperor Champion to be put in a drop pod taken by units that can have it as transport (like he can be added in a rhino, razorback or land raider)? It's really silly in a full drop-pod army to have one quite expensive man standing all alone in the middle of the battlefield...

2. Does a Painboy's tool kit confer FNP to ICs that join a unit of Nobs or Flashgits that have a painboy? Also Apothecaries, Same Question.

Nope, it's not the fearless rule, "God of War" just assumes the Ld test you would have taken was successful.

Last I heard JJ doesn't have much of a say in the financial workings of the company, so I wouldn't waste his time asking that especially as he probably has even less of a say in Gordon Brown's decision to trim down V.A.T to keep the economy floating (if you're paying in euros, chances are you ain't in blighty anyway, so not likely to be excused the V.A.T).

Here's what I'd ask JJ

1: What projects are you really buzzed about working on in the future?
2: What projects that you're not working on are you most looking forward to seeing?
3: What projects would you like to do if you had the time and full freedom?
4: Tell us one thing that's hitting 40K in the next 12 months that we don't know about.

I have a couple questions.

First off, is do they have any plans for a more comprehensive round of FAQ's? The recent ones they put out were really, really poor and appeared very rushed.

Second, are there any plans for plastic greatcoat Imperial Guard models at any point in time?

third, any information on a "Legions" CSM codex, specifically if such (if it's going to occur at all) will be just "Cults" or all "Legions".

Fourth, what on earth was their rationale for not making the vehicle and wargear changes (Land Raider transport capacity, stormshields, etc) in the SM codex retroactive for other Space Marine books?

My questions:

1) When can we expect a 5th edition tyranid codex?

2) Will GW ever have an open forum where people can make suggestions for changes/updates on proposed new rulebooks/codexes?

3) Will GW consider releasing an eratta to give lash of submission a 0-1 limit?

4) What would I need to do to be on the committee that decides what goes into new codexes?

5) Would GW ever consider outsourcing the rules/codex element to the hobby to a pofessional group who can ensure no ambiguity and consistency between each codex and the rules in general, and thereby free up GW to focus on releasing more models?

6) Has GW seen any significant sales increases around the time of dawn of war games releases or is the opposite true as most 40k gamers spend more time in front of a PC than their game board?

7) Will GW ever decide to take the plunge and convert all their model ranges that are still metal to plastic?

8) Will GW decide to focus on their propriety model range and consider selling off the Lord of the Rings franchise since it has no relevance to the warhammer and 40k systems and is not even represented internationally at tournaments, and most independant stockists don't keep any of the models?

9) Is GW oversimplifying 40k in order to make it more accessable to young children at the expense of more mature veterans?

10) How can I get my wife more interested in 40k?

When/Will GW adopt a "Most Recent Printing" standard regarding units/weapons/equipment/wargear of the same name that exists in different codices. If GW is chosing *NOT* to do so, what is the actual rules reason for doing so, not the "background" reason?

borithan
14-01-2009, 12:45
Don't we already know the rules reason? Ie, that the codexes were designed with those rules in mind, and that if you did do a "most recent printing" ruling then people would need more than one codex to run an army?

Surely more problematic in terms of common sense is the background reason, as rules wise it is simple: Those are the rules. However, background wise it makes little sense to have things called the same thing having different performances...

Not that I am particularly bothered, but I think those 4 selected by someone as good questions are good ones...

Ok, since my question seems to interest no one, my personal contribution to this thread will be to try to summarise previous questions (if there are no big mistakes it could be nice to be putt at the beginning of the topic)

Rules related questions :
- Can Deffrollas be used in a Ram or only in Tank Shock?
- Is a Thundefire Cannon and Techmarine worth 1 or 2 KP?
- Is a tank with Chronus worth 1 or 2 KP?
- Clarification for rules giving capacities to an «army» (Do SoB, GK and =][= allies gain the benefits from Vulkan He'Stan ? And the legion of the Damned ?)
- Fortune, guide etc, ie powers cast on a unit. What happens when an IC joins or leaves the unit? Again, a general answer to cover more instances would be better.
- No Retreat and multiple combats- Was it really intended that powerful units eg Tyranid MC- take wounds from this if the weak units- eg gaunt horde- they are supporting gets badly beaten in combat?
- Does a Painboy's tool kit confer FNP to ICs that join a unit of Nobs or Flashgits that have a painboy? Also Apothecaries, Same Question.

Rule «improvement» request :
- For the GK, does sustained attack designed against CSM deamons have to work the same against a full daemon army ?
- Are the same units/equipement from different imperium codexes going to be standardised (beta version ?)
- When is Jervis going to do the army he created, the Dark Angels, real justice? So their rules fit their fluff nearly 100%, and we're not just a 'beta' for another army
- Will GW consider releasing an eratta to give lash of submission a 0-1 limit?

Release related questions :
- How is the new Dark Eldar codex progressing ?
- Are there old concept items/weapons/special rules (RT, …) that are planned to be recycled (like the thunderfire canon)
- New releases planned for inquisition units ?
- Plastic deamon second wave, plastic prince deamon ?
- any hints about the new IG codex?
- What is the general design philosophy for 5th edition? Is this era of Special Characters everywhere to be expected with future codecies, or was it just a (Ultra)Marine thing?
- After the Baneblade, the Stompa, and the virtually-guaranteed Valkyrie, will we be seeing any other plastic titan / flyer / formerly FW-only models?
- Any information regarding Dark Eldar progress? What can we expect from the codex in terms of new units, rules development, development themes(I.E. speed speed speed, dark mirror of their Craftworld cousins, etc?)
- Any news on the CSM Cult books he mentioned? / What's the plan for the Traitor Legions and their rumoured codex (possibly codices)?
- When will you release the new Dwarf Blood Bowl team that was sculpted ?
- Is there any chance of ever getting any more races (xenos not another division of humans) or has the system/business reached a point where more can't be suported ?
- When will we see the new Kill Team, Combat Patrol rules that are rumored to be out ?
- The use of all monstrous creatures in Tyranids produced an interesting variant list. Would you consider doing another variant where there are no MCs (except Hive Tyrant) but all the small tyranids have the 'winged' biomorph as standard?
- When the second wave marine release will be ?
- When the plastic thunderhawk will be a reality ?
- The planetstrike expansion when that will be hitting ?
- Will we see new Clanrats/Slaves when the Skaven get their new release ?
- Might there be a Wazzdakka model someday ?
- Will we ever see another big-release GW spinoff game, like Space Hulk or Man-o-War or Warhammer Quest, or are those truly gone forever and ever and ever?
- Are there any plans for plastic greatcoat Imperial Guard models at any point in time?
- When can we expect a 5th edition tyranid codex?
- Will GW ever decide to take the plunge and convert all their model ranges that are still metal to plastic ? (and maybe to keep some old metal ones as collector on the online shop)

Other questions :
- What are the conditions of the playtesting before rule release ?
- How often do you read Warhammer-related internet forums, and how often do you want to smack the members of those communities?
- What projects are you really buzzed about working on in the future?
- Tell us one thing that's hitting 40K in the next 12 months that we don't know about.
- any plans for a more comprehensive round of FAQ's? The recent ones they put out were really, really poor and appeared very rushed.
- Will GW ever have an open forum where people can make suggestions for changes/updates on proposed new rulebooks/codexes?
- Has GW seen any significant sales increases around the time of dawn of war games releases or is the opposite true as most 40k gamers spend more time in front of a PC than their game board?
- Will GW decide to focus on their propriety model range and consider selling off the Lord of the Rings franchise since it has no relevance to the warhammer and 40k systems and is not even represented internationally at tournaments, and most independant stockists don't keep any of the models?
- Is GW oversimplifying 40k in order to make it more accessable to young children at the expense of more mature veterans?

Ok, not really "summerized" but maybe easier to react with...

Seconded:D (or thirded or whatever;))
+ the orky ones about Rams being able to Ram.

My pedants one is
Chronus has a servo arm.. but he doesn't have the blessings of ommnissiah.
How did the dev team intend for him to work(what was his creation process).. was it to fix vehicles as well, when inside *his* vehicle or only after it blew? (so he has a purpose when he pops out)..Or just for the attack benefit or neither and its a list typo, he was never meant to have a servo arm in the final print..it just got left in there.

but good luck.. They like answering vague generalisations about methodology rather than exact rules questions.

Don't we already know the rules reason? Ie, that the codexes were designed with those rules in mind, and that if you did do a "most recent printing" ruling then people would need more than one codex to run an army?..

I'd agree with that in principal except for the fact that in many of the codexes in question the rules and costs were just cut and pasted from a previously printed set of rules. Additionally, if the rules for specific items of Imperial kit such as the Land Raider, the Rhino, Power of the Machine Spirit, etc. were specificlly balanced, then what the hell is the deal with the Space Wolves? Is the SW codex somehow magically balanced such that, despite the fact it was written in the grim darkness of 3rd edition, it doesn't become unbalanced with access to the most up to date SM gear and rules?

That's a prime reason why I can't buy the "units were balanced to a specific codex" line.

Furthermore, the idea of "wanting only a single book to refference" goes out the window on 3 of the five outdated imperial codeices that repeat vehicles and equipment found in the SM codex: Space Wolves, Witch Hunters, and Demon Hunters, all of which refference Codex Space Marine for one or more units. Leaving only two *ACTUALLY* printed books Codex Dark Angels and Codex Black Templars, (and Codex Blood Angels) out in the cold, so to speak.

Soupcat
15-01-2009, 06:13
the space wolves issue is simply that its the only way they could take, as its either invalidate the book, or continue to say refer to codex space marines. Any extra stuff they get because of this is stuff they will already have at the end of the year anyways.

Leaving only two *ACTUALLY* printed books Codex Dark Angels and Codex Black Templars, (and Codex Blood Angels) out in the cold, so to speak.

Having a copypaste of the rules can be also a problem, since "we give you the description of the core book rule X" turned to "ok, every one have a new rule, but not you, because it has been written ages ago in your codex" (dedicated transport, etc...). Or a good thing (old smoke rule for Black Templar than can stock with new cover rule for a 4+ save AND only glancing).

GW took the easy way : if they had chosen to make changes, they would have to balance them, test them, etc... I can understand that. They should just have the gust to admit it. So the real question could be : when GW will see us as intelligent beings, and begin to deal with us like so ?

How much time does it actually take to update one previous edition codex to the current 40k edition (rewriting and playtesting included) ?
If a team got together and exclusively did so with all codexes, therefore filling in all potential loopholes, how much time are we looking at ?
Would GW ever consider putting together a gaming group for predetermined fixed period of time to achieve the above ?

If Jackie Chan and Jet Li had an unscripted, no-holds barred fight, who would win?

It would be a tie. The thing is...Jackie Chan and Jet Li are both trained in Jing Ju theater as opposed to any real martial arts with practical applications. They're both familiar with other forms, but not enough to use it effectively.

Jing Ju has an extensive stylized form of combat which is slower than a real fight to allow the audience to enjoy it. The stylization of combat also allows for imitation of various forms of Kung Fu, as demonstrated in the Forbidden Kingdom.

Essentially, they would both default to Jing Ju stage combat and it would enter a sort of unscripted, improvised set of stylized motion.

So the real question could be : when GW will see us as intelligent beings, and begin to deal with us like so ?

I expect when we start acting like intelligent people, when we appreciate that they've just released a new codex and the others will follow in due course, that if you really want green stormshields to be the same as blue ones then just talk to your opponent, and that we understand and respect GW's view on the game has always been and always will be that the rules are a set of guidelines and they can never come up with a rule for every eventuality.

I know that last point will grate on the people wo expect a complete ruleset for everything, with all FAQs answered, everything crystal clear and are not prepared to tinker with the rules.
It has always been a social hobby to be enjoyed among friends and that is who they cater for.

Anyway, my question for Mr Jervis is "will Warhammer Quest ever make it into Specialist Games or are there any plans/hopes to update it to 7th ed forces?"

My questions would be:

Why does it seem to me like the present management of GW wants to make Specialist Games 'disappear'?

Why did you get rid of all the SG related content that had rules for units/models that are not included in the current Citadel range?

Why is everything regarding making conversions getting 'regulated'? Not allowed to use 3rd party bitz, having to base models with the bases they came supplied with.. What's up with this?

Why is WD becoming such a "Pro" mag that it no longer features any 'human' content, like Golden Daemon entries etc?

Where do you see the future of the 'hobby' at in 10 years time? Do you think the hobby demographic will change towards a more younger audience?

Does miniature counterfeiting concern GW?

Why does GW insist on designing the rules for their core games? Isn't GW more about making miniatures, terrain & playing aids?

And, lastly, When can we finally be able to buy Space Hulk again?!!!!??!!!!!!

I expect when we start acting like intelligent people
That's a big problem, you can't expect to have a mature audience when you target 12yo people (among others)...

I know that last point will grate on the people wo expect a complete ruleset for everything, with all FAQs answered, everything crystal clear and are not prepared to tinker with the rules.
It has always been a social hobby to be enjoyed among friends and that is who they cater for.
You don't have to ask GW permission to know if you can agree with rule variants, that's not the point. The idea is to skip the same questions from coming back again and again : this is a *war*game, not a *court of law*game.

The main point of a FAQ is the term "frequently" : it's not an impossible situation created by chance with an almost-null probability, it's a recurrent situation. Standardizing an answer make the game faster, so for the same amount of time more units can be played, so they can be sold, so GW earn nore money.

Errata are something totally different : at first used to correct typo errors, it can be a way to keep rules more or less up to date. Yes, balancing rules is difficult : for one guy creating a rule, there a dozens of them to break it. That don't excuse not even trying.
Every one don't have an internet connection/GW center/club near his place ? That means he play for the fun, does-he really need immediate access to updates ? If he wants to attend a tourney, rules updates could be there at his disposition. He goes to a GW shop ? They can be free to be read.

In short, being (few) update(s) late is better than one/several edition late.
And for a more buisness-oriented argument : some units with time appear useless, and for that reason not purchased. Why wait for several years to make them interesting when you can adjust them in less than a semester and boost your already existing line of production ?

I can make life easier for you here:

Why does it seem to me like the present management of GW wants to make Specialist Games 'disappear'?

It doesn't make the required profit margins.

Why did you get rid of all the SG related content that had rules for units/models that are not included in the current Citadel range?

Because GW don't sell them. Why promote something you can't sell?

Why is everything regarding making conversions getting 'regulated'? Not allowed to use 3rd party bitz, having to base models with the bases they came supplied with.. What's up with this?

That's all crap. It's your models, do what you want. If GW want to be comtrolling about it, then stuff them. There is a reason but it shouldn't worry anybody, it's more of an issue for GW.

Why is WD becoming such a "Pro" mag that it no longer features any 'human' content, like Golden Daemon entries etc?

Because it's their only form of advertising, and is designed specifically for new customers and potential customers. Sometimes it has a window into the life of a committed hobbyist.

Does miniature counterfeiting concern GW?

Yes, so don't do it ;)

Why does GW insist on designing the rules for their core games? Isn't GW more about making miniatures, terrain & playing aids?

Why not? It's fun and gives them total control over production of all their products. In addition the rules act as secondary marketing for their products.

And, lastly, When can we finally be able to buy Space Hulk again?!!!!??!!!!!!

NEVER

I'm affraid I'll have to second the question on prices :

How do you determine the price of one of your product in a given country ?

A box that costs 34£ in the UK or 50$ in the US, ends up costing 50€ in France. Based on the current exchange rate (it's been around that rate for several months now), it should cost 38€.

That's terribly unfair for those of us who can't buy things on the internet.

PS : note that I'm not criticizing GW's overall prices, just wondering why GW products cost that much in the Euro Zone while they're so cheap in the United Kingdom (which is roughly 30kms away from France).

30KM? WTF? When I was driving to work, it was 100km one way. Why don't you just drive there and but from there then? Is cross border shopping that much of a hassel? Is crossing the border that much of a hassel? Just curious.

There are only 30km from UK to France, but 815km from where I live in France to London. ;)

I was only mentionning that distance in case someone said the difference in cost between UK and the rest of Europe was due to shipping fees.

Sammy dosn't have to be taken for the RWA to be scoring. Remeber you are only talking one or two speeders, not all DA speeders. Just RWA Speeders are scoring.

I would like to know if they really want a FAQ or not. If not, why not get rid of it once and for all. If they do want it, why isn't it updated? A FAQ is a frequently asked question. An errata is a change to a codex. Why can't they do this properly?

Question:
"Considering that whenever you do one of these Q&A sessions you seem to get ask a very large number of rules questions and the officialness of customer service calls has been shown in the past to not match to later FAQ's. Have you ever considered following in the footsteps of Wizards of the Coast and establish a dedicated team to manage official rulings?
Could a DCI like body be useful as a final arbiter of rules as, although the spirit of the game is often refered to, most of us gaming geeks would rather slit our own throats than let someone get away with something that gives them an advantage over us without some higher power giving them the OK. This would at least give us someone to complain about, rather than fight over who's interpretation is correct."

Sorry I get a bit verbose when it comes to asking questions as I was always taught that the morre detailed the question, the better the answer.

Ok, in simple terms it boils down to.

"Other games have official rules teams that do nothing but issue faqs and provide a rules answer service. Why don't you?"

The main example is the DCI for all of Hasbros games (including Magic the Gathering)

Because at the moment the job seems to be done by whoever has free time with questionable results.
They use the line "with the spirit of the game" to apply as a catch all when what we really want are a definitive answers.

Magic is an alot more serious game then Warhammer. You can actualy make a living playing MTG as there are decent money prices for the pro-tour. There is also alot more money involved as I am pretty sure that there is a larger profit margin on cards compared to models due to manifacture costs. I also remember some of the golden years for MTG when it outsold the rest of the games industry (models, boardgames, computer games, consoles etc).

This is very diffrent from Warhammer where even most tournaments are just friendly gatherings and GW has some finacial difficulties as well. The only way I can see this change is if GW starts to make alot more profit so that they get spare funds to spend on non essential stuff.

Have a look at the other questions in this thread, most of which seem to be rules queries, then have a look at the arguments over the same in the rules forums.
Then tell me people don't take GW stuff as seriously as Magic.

Ok there isn't the money issue, but that only applies to the top 1% of magic players.
