View Full Version : 2000 point magic-heavy Warriors list - C&C please

Ok, I've a High Elf army that is very "Greek-themed" - that is, lots of spear Infantry and many chariots. It's only minimal magic, with a pair of Level 2's (one dedicated to defence). I've a small Bretonnian army that I may build upon, based around lots of Cavalry, movement and War Machines.

Deciding that I need to experiment with Monsters and lots of Magic, I'm looking into other armies. Either Dark Elves (for Monsters) and Chaos (for magic) - or both, depending on how cheap I can get the armies.

Ok, I've already mentioned this in the tactica: Minimalism thread, and Shamfrit The Narroq knows that this list is very character-heavy (something I may need to address).

I wanted a high-magic force that has a killy General (agian, my HE has only a Foot general, for monster-defence and I fancied something a little more agressive). Please can you tell me what you think of the force, and how you'd improve it (since I've little experience with Chaos).

Sorcerer Lord: Level 4, Mark of Tzeentch, Sword of Might, Armour of Morrslieb, Blasphemous Amulet, Power Stone, Diabolic Splendour & mounted on a Manticore.
This is a very expensive character, and I guess somewhere that could be slimmed down. However, in proxy games, he's been able to take out whole units of enemy troops - the magic spells of Lore of Tzeentch (with an extra 'surprise cast' thanks to the Power Stone), combined with the Sword of Might and the Manticore do a lot of initial damage. The Amulet finishes off anyone in base, and then the Splendour helps break the enemy - who are almost always run down, thanks to the Fly ability of the manticore

Chaos Sorceror: Level 2, Mark of Tzeentch, Dispel Scroll.
A cheap, reasonable caster with a Scroll for defence

Chaos Sorceror: Level 2, Mark of Tzeentch, Dispel Scroll.
Same as the above one.

19 Chaos Marauders: Hand Weapons, Shields, Light Armour, Musician & Standard Bearer.
Sorceror rides in here. Unit is cheap, reasonable in combat. Sorceror acts as the 'unit champion', boosting Ld and being an OK fighter.

19 Chaos Marauders: Hand Weapons, Shields, Light Armour, Musician & Standard Bearer.
same as above, but with the second Sorceror.

12 Chaos Warriors: Hand Weapon, Additional Hand Weapons, Shields & Mark of Tzeentch. Standard Bearer: Banner of Wrath.
Adds some toughness to the force. Banner complements the high-magic nature of the force. AHW to carve through lighter foes, HW&Shield against tougher opponents.

5 Hounds.
Escorts to protect my Knights' flanks, and general baiting/annoyance

5 Hounds.
same as above

5 Chaos Knights: Ensorcelled Weapons, Mark of Tzeentch & Champion.
Champion included simply as I've an idea for a conversion. Used to take on problematic enemy units, since they're really tough fighters from what I've seen.

For some ranged ability, and one that can acutally fight off enemy light units.

The general plan:

Marauders and Warriors form a battle line (Warriors in centre). These units march up to engage the enemy, the Marauders providing ranks and the Warriors providing the killing. The Hellcannon sits on the flank of this formation, bombarding enemy ranged units and charging Fast Cavalry units and the like, preventing my line getting flanked.

The Lord pushes off on his own up the other flank, zapping units with magic and combat, as previously detailed.

Following the Lord would be the Knights (flanked by the Hounds). This is to take advantage of any holes the Lord makes in the enemy line, and to act as a bit of a bodyguard (as the Lord can be beaten by big enough enemy units).

So, what do you think? I kinda want to keep a lord on a Manticore, just because I like the concept. The DE list I was thinking of would have 2x Hydra and perhaps a Lord on a Manticore, so I guess it's not the end of the world if you think I should drop it to free up some points.

One thing that worries me is that I'm spending 955 points on Characters alone - that's nearly 50% of my army! But the Lord is very killy, and causes havoc with low-Ld troops so I almost think it's justified. But then my list is light on numbers...

Any thoughts & comments would be really appreciated.

Bit too small for my liking and not enough threats.

2 quick observations;

chaos warriors should always have halberds over add hand weapons. Run the maths.

Try dropping the hellcannon and warriors for another 2 units of knights. They will never fail you.

I say this because;

1. i think cws suck in a competitive enviroment
2. Hellcannon + lots of wizards + no puppet = possibly massive problem.

Oh and for the sorc id be more tempted to try;

Rune sword, Enchanted shield, Eye of Tzeentch.
