YAY! Pre Heresy Sallies are an awesome scheme. The darker colours suit them IMO although be careful not to make them too dark.

BTW What are you using as reference for the scheme as the Australian GW site still has the pre-heresy coulour schemes for a lot of the chapters if you were curious?

Here begins my delving into a proper Pre-heresy contingent (and other distractions). My previous marines were Dusk Raiders which pre-date the Great Crusade and as such I don't embrace for campaigns/events of the PH nature.

http://fulgrim.com/minis/dr/dr01.jpg

I wanted a proper Crusade era legion to sit aside from the Raiders and after much fiddling (Word Bearers, Iron Hands, Dark Angels, Space Wolves, World Eaters .. ;/.) I settled upon the drakes of Nocturne, Legio XVIII, the Salamanders.

Colour testing ahoy! I settled on a simple Knarlock Green base coat, followed by a wash of Devlan Mud. Re-apply Knarloc and then highlight the edges with 1:1 Knarloc/Goblin green mix. These chaps are at stage 2.

http://fulgrim.com/minis/sally/s01.jpg

The 4/5 pictures in Collected Visions. They seem to be the entirety of PH imagery for the Salamanders sadly. I will be throwing in some gold trimmings where apparent.

Welcome to the Crusade brother, this should be an interesting log. Consider me subscribed as I am doing a Pre-Heresy Ultramarines army and am interested to see how others are doing their Pre-Heresy armies. On a personal note I would say that they could possibly do with being a bit darker on the green armour as they look a little pale. Any ideas on what size a force you will be doing??

Sahaal

Whitehorn
20-01-2009, 11:02
I thought it was too dark - those above have just been washed, so not had a layer of Knarloc yet.

Here was the prototype. End highlights were in Goblin green, which is too far off, so will redo that with the mix mentioned.

Really great looking stuff there, great take on the armour colour.

Whitehorn

Thanks shaw.

My concern is the cloak. It's lizard scale, but I can't help think painting it green is going to be a bit bland.

Having never seen a pre-heresy Salamanders force, this should be quite interesting. Not to mention awesome so far.

Some advice for the cloak, you could do it light greens and yellows or reds. Maybe even greys.

Whitehorn

Dug out those RT pics. Not strictly PH, but the dark green is delicious:

wernt pre heresy that wavy pattern of yellow and black?

Whitehorn
20-01-2009, 12:39
wernt pre heresy that wavy pattern of yellow and black?

No. That's a campaign camouflage scheme (or retconned job) from Rogue Trader - post heresy. Badab War to be specific.

Having posted that picture, I'm quite happy with that metallic yellow included. It's damn near close to my Fuegan (http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/5976/p1010618smpp3.jpg)!

I like the abundance of flames and yellow/metallic yellow sections on the armour. That should break the monotomy a fair bit - especially the vet. sergeant's extra plates.

Nice log and I love people try their hand at pre Heresy stuff but I was reading through collected visions last night and most (not all) sallys were shown yellow and black in it. The Speeder/Bike squads were shown green.

Could you give me some page numbers?

I found a good 5 pictures - all were green with yellow/gold trimmings and black pads.

Since you mention bikes, here's a WIP

22-01-2009, 04:25
the jetbike appears to be a master of the ravenwing bike converted to look less ravenwing-ey... i am proud to see salamanders painted well and even more than that, pre-heresy ones!

Dark Magos Gillam
22-01-2009, 04:41
Nice work so far. No helmetless guys though. I think I might do a pre-heresy army. Red scale cloak or possibly brown with some sort of snake skin pattern would probably look pretty good.

LordKhaine
22-01-2009, 08:44
i dont think thats the ravenwing jetbike, the back of it looks like it i believe, but the front is ALOT smaller, especially the eagle, or maybe my mind plays tricks on me

Whitehorn
22-01-2009, 10:04
The front is a Battlefleet Gothic ship. Some parts from Baneblade and marine bike too.

I primed 5 combat scouts last night, so more than enough bald heads to look forward to painting jet black!

I ran out of unpainted models, will need to get to work on converting/building more, so am going to spend time finishing up the painting on all those seen/mentioned for now and then put the project on hold as I have to paint my Chaos warrior army for Carnage :d

They're from the new Chaos Knights sprues.

Tonberry
09-02-2009, 13:26
Sallies, yay!
He'stan is a techmarine body, right arm from a Sternguard, CSM head, DE corsair cloak, chaos knights shoulder pads and an amalgam of a chaos and a loyalist backpack?
What is the halberd made from? Staff looks like an old rune priest thunder hammer, but I'm not sure...
Great use of the alpha legion shoulder pads, think I'll nick that idea, are the MK IV heads resin or from the black templar sprue?

Whitehorn
09-02-2009, 14:51
The heads are:
FW Red Scorpion resin
Khorne Berserkers
Chaos space marines

The Halberd is the very same techmarine, with the stock of a flamer and blade of a graveguard.

His backpack is all chaos, just trimmed down.

Right hand is from Pedro Kantor.

Nice so far. I am currently attempting to have a salamanders colour scheme like in the Space Marines Codex (The current one), but I am going insane trying to get that shade of green they have. Next to how they got the red for their excorcists I think those are two of the greatest mysteries of the universe.... Or im missing something basic entirely,

shhh don't say it out loud... the Gods of Chaos will ruin you for it.
The salies look great man. particularly the metal Vet Sgt and the Emperor. That scheme is wicked on him.

@ HWD: the shoulder pads are from the plastic Chaos Knights set

Nice emperor, a nice change from the alll gold most people paint him as. I really like your commander, he looks pimp, and somehow he seems salamander when by all right he should look Iron hands with that torso.
5 out a 5.

As others have guess, I assume the lump of metal wires and stuff is the back end of the new FW Brass Scorpion? :)

I have to say that its not often that I comment on a SM log (since there are just so many of them!), but you have really put that extra bit of effort into your minis. The conversions are truly top-notch!

Some progress on Vulkan.

I've put more detail and bulk into his chest piece and begin crafting his cloak/salamander skin. I'm going for a mottled texture and colour rather than uniform scales.

I really need to cut and redo his left leg - the knee is very wrong!

...and I'm back!

The campaign was a lot of fun, I managed to get everything done in 3 colours. Hopefully have some pics lurking about somewhere too!

I am now preparing for the next AOTE campaign in September by taking Sons of Horus. I also have to paint a 1250 FoW force and beginning Daemons for a Tale of.. lots of work!

For now, a WIP of my Sons:

Vassakov
07-06-2009, 10:05
Good grief, this is a good log. The Dread appears to be the =][= Scale Inquisitor in TDA - Tyrus, IIRC? Not sure about the head, doesn't look quite like the FW MkIV Dread Heads, but that could just be the angle.

Either way, excellent work. Keep it up!

The base model is indeed Inquisitor Tyrus.
The head is from Forgeworld - the World Eater IIRC.

Heeey!

I've been busy with all sorts of projects. AOTE was a blast and I'm on top of preparing for the next event - taking Dark mechanicum!

I've been building some vehicles for them, customising towards a WW2 german theme and Wolfenstein inspired infantry. So far I've built a StuG counts-as:

http://fulgrim.com/minis/tanks/stug05.jpg

http://fulgrim.com/minis/tanks/stug06.jpg

I really like the idea of exposed tracks, so will be maintaining this across my Chimera-chassis vehicles too:

http://fulgrim.com/minis/am/DSC00020.jpg

I'm using Deth Korps Grenadiers for Skiitari. Having clipped the tops of their heads and sculpted on hoods, this simple conversion works very nicely

http://fulgrim.com/minis/dark-mechanicum/dm_skiitari_03.JPG

The same goes for a select few Astartes. I hope to build a squad of apprentice tech marines:

http://fulgrim.com/minis/dark-mechanicum/mech-marines.jpg

For my menials, I've made use of the piles of spare Goblins I have from Black Reach. A quick shave of the hood and replacement of the face so far. Somehow they need las pistols and inevitably some wires.

If you would like to be a named Skitarii in my forces, please post your name and some minor details about yourself that I can incorporate. I'm taking a bit of an ad-hoc approach to my Mechanicum. There's so much to do and I can never concentrate on 1 thing at a time. I hope to change that soon though, I need to nail down final lists and work more systematically on units.

Some thoughts on what I do plan to have done by may:

Archmagos prime - built, painting started
Kelbor Hal - not started
Luminen host - Electro avatar and priests

2 squads of Hypaspists
1 squad of sagitarii
3 or 6 Auxilia
5 or so Protectors, I'm doing these as techmarine adepts, admech halberds, DA robes, etc.
Large squad of menials (30). Including at least 2 COGs. My menials are based on Night goblins.

Kaban machine - tracks built, hull started
2 or 4 Chimeras - 3 half built
Executioner - built
1 or 2 Assault Walkers
1 Biologis Land Crawler - hull and legs built
1 Cataphrakt Land Raider - mostly built
2 Warden Sentinels - built
The demons are mostly done:
8 Blood letters
8 Blood letters
7 Plague bearers (pretending to be feral servitors)
7 Plague bearers (pretending to be feral servitors)
2 Soulgrinders
Khorne Daemon Prince

Tempted to get the Nurgle Daemon prince and ad-mech his ass.

Not sure where I'm heading with these chaps yet. Perhaps electro priests as they have lots of exposed flesh to build upon. This modelis from heresy miniatures, they have various had choices too. Just built him a more AM looking weapon for now. Will add a power unit:

http://fulgrim.com/minis/am/priest01.jpg

The CHimeras are itching to be finished. I've settled on leaving the tracks exposed like this, but may add some details on the inside or hide it a little with some schürzen.

http://fulgrim.com/minis/am/DSC00020.jpg

A PIP shot of my Krieg-class Skitarii. The Grenadiers are great base models, particularly because of their plated armour, which normal Kriegers don't have. Quite a simple conversion here - trim the helmet and sculpt on a hood.

That Tech-adept is almost scary, with a superior air of confidence you only enhanced so well. Good cog-axe cutting, by the way, and very promising Skitarii!

This should not be of direct interest to your budding Adeptus Mechanicus, but might provide some ideas, such as for rivetting. So what am I talking about? Well, I'm merely spreading the news of the Rhino Conversion (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=225932), a must to look-up.

As for your Cult Mechanicum conscription, I'm well on! I'd really like to be a robed menial along the skull-gobbos! :D

Let's see, how to make this useful?

Name (barely redone phonetically): Mattheus Richter.
Age: 19.
Nationality (for typical jokes): Swedish (so don't hesitate with viking beards! ;))
Favorite Colour: Blue.
Additional facts: Brown hair, blue eyes, sinewy/lean build. One parent works as a carpenter (a menial carrying an electro-saw perhaps?), obsessively interested in most things, especially nature science, history and the "optic impressional quality" of women (this doesn't end in a model carrying a pin-up History school book, right?).

I'm a devil for babbling - which should be obvious from this post - have been called more often than once a "generous/helpful chap", and really likes Sourcream & Onion potato chips.

Hm, what else? Ah, for 40k I'd like to build a scratch-built/converted Vostroyan force with lots of moustaches, and have considered a full-out Guard force made up entirely of Servo skulls. Of course, not entirely of servo skulls; there must be some Tech-Priests to wind the skulls up and throw into the air!

Pick and choose! :)

Next!

Wow, really nice stuff. I'm especially liking the robed marines, the pipe in the mouth is really effective. And the menials are really cute too :D

Being a fan of the 'pipe in the mouth' look you have going, I reckon doing the same thing to the menials would look sweet. Looking forward to seeing more stuff!

Whitehorn
23-10-2009, 09:30
My stumbling block with the menials is that the TF codex has them geared with laspistols.

So I ordered every laspistol I could find on a bits site. I have 5 las pistols now, hah!

Instead I am going to fiddle with some concepts towards lascutters or other 'instruments'. maybe Dr. Who's silly little spanner.

The Goblin musician models are great in that they have interesting poses and unusual shaped drumsticks (sickles) that could pass as tools.

As for pipes, I'm not sure I want to do that over 20 times to such a small model. I'm sculpting a small power pack to cast and attach to them, but beyond that.. we'll see how I feel :)

The robed marines are 6 strong now, all with hoods and either pipes or respirators. Next I need to make them all power halberds with cog heads, like the IG tech adept.

Whitehorn you're stuff is great. 45 models in 45 days - wow, what a goal!

The assassin looks great, terrifyingly ghostly and I love the sinister and authentic look you've achieved with the Alpha legion marine (best HH book so far imo).

I also love the renegade ogryn swinging a post with that block of concrete, it's so evocative though it looks from the group pic like he's about to take the poor assassins head off!

The cult freehand on the tanks is nice, did I see something simmilar on BoLs recently? You've made them stand out miles with that - nice work.

Look fwd to more.

rev, I haven't actually bought one yet. For the masks, I use a combination of sponge and whatever crappy brush is closest to me. Sponges give a nice noisy coverage, but the brush helps me get paint into awkward areas, under hoods and such.

Tail is good idea. This rudder should be bigger may be twice. How about some smaller boxes on sides of this tail base?

The tail looks absolutely awesome, I'll say go for it :D... Is it supposed to join your dark Mechanicus army, cus then the eagle piece of the tail might be a bit off :D... What is the plan for the colour scheme ??

Dark Flesh, black and cold, dark steel :)

Tail is being remade but staying.

Fair bit yet to do.

To paint:
15 Hypaspists
2 protectors
1 Myrmidon
1 dozer blade, 2 hull guns for Chimeras
Finish Brass Scorpion
Repaint 2 COGs to the new style
Some more menials

Then I need to decide which of the following to do:
More ferals
Kelbor Hal from scratch
Paint a Leman Russ or Land Raider
Finish the Land Crawler?
Paint the Storm Hawk
Finish building Sagitarii?

The tail is ok, but I think (if you can) scratchbuilding a bigger and more angled "rudder" with the "wing" being bigger would definitely tie it together. Also, it looks like it is possible to make the tail a lot further back with a LITTLE modification. (mostly shaving a little detail from the back of the raised piece on the top.) Hopefully this profile view of the T-hawk helps. http://s49.photobucket.com/albums/f252/CanisD/Shipyard/40K/Thunderhawk.png It doesn't have to be the back of the hull, like the hawk (I assume those doors are for the dread), but, like I said, the back of the raised piece on the top.

I apologize if I'm not describing this well :(
