Looking at all the new Lizardmen stuff in my local GW has got me interested in starting to play fantasy. I've never really played, but have played 40k, Warmachine etc...

My question is regarding building an army. What is the restrictions on rare, special, characters etc.... I understand the amounts go up depending on points value of game....Is there a table I can't see somewhere?

cheers guys

It varies from army to army though generally it's (at 1000 or lower) roughly

1+ - Hero
2+Core
0-3? Special
0-1 Rare

Typically, although some armies differ, at 2000 - 2999 points (which is the usual range at which people play) you can have 4 characters, one of which can be a lord. you must have 3 core choices, although you can have as many as you want. you may have up to 4 special choices, and up to 2 rare choices. for every 1000 pts above 2000, add one to each category. for games under 2000pts, you can have 3 characters, none of which can be a lord, 2+ compulsory core choices, up to 3 special choices and up to 1 rare choice.

I think you're allowed one more Special Choice at each level than you mentioned...

To the OP All of the army books have a table at the front explaining this, so just pop into your nearest store and have a browse!

All except High Elves:
Up to 1999 points
1 - 3 Heroes (1 is ALWAYS required)
2+ Core (MUST have at least 2)
0 - 3 Special
0 - 1 Rare

+1 core requirement per 1000 points (2000, 3000 etc)
+1 special allowance per 1000 points (2000, 3000 etc)
+1 rare alowance per 1000 points (2000, 3000 etc)

1 Lord, 3 heroes is allowed at 2000 points (or 4 heroes)
2 Lords, 4 heroes at 3000
this is the only one that changes inconsistently.

Re: All except High Elves...
Bretonnians must have at least 2 characters as they always have to have a Battle Standard Bearer (and a general), due to this they always have the option to have one extra hero than usual.

The page your looking for is usually the one before the character selection in each armies respective book (or codex as you no doubt are calling it.....damn 40k players!).

Remember that, instead of for example 2 lords and 4 heroes, you are also allowed 6 heroes with no lords... The book usually says that you may take so much characters, of which a maximum of X may be lords. But you can also fill your character-bit with just hero-level characters.
