Hello all and welcome to my second attempt at a painting log. Last time I tried to build an army. That didn't work. Mainly due to my wandering eye and general lack of commitment. So this time I'm just going to post up everything 40K that catches my eye. There will be a lean towards Black Legion, as they are the army I've been trying to build, but also some marines and a couple of Eldar if I get round to them. Without futher jibbajabba;

My Chaos Marine Lord. He's painted in my rather subdued Black Legion colour scheme. I don't like Black Legion to have too much red or gold like the studio army. Black all the way. He's painted to what I'd call a tabletop character level. A bit of extra attention over the normal guys, but similar enough to blend in.

Comments and particularly criticism welcome.

01-02-2009, 01:34
Nicely done, I like the bone and the silver banding. The gold is nice and soft too. Makes a nice change to the omgbrightgold.

01-02-2009, 01:36
Next up is my attempt at Sicarius. I bought him because he's a great looking model, but now he's tempting me to build 1000 points of Ultramarines. He was great fun to paint. I lifted the scheme and techniques directly from the White Dwarf 'Eavy Metal Masterclass. This was my first every attempt at free hand, painting banners and controlled shading. I think it's not too bad. He was more or less painted to the best of my ability, except for a few moments when impatiance got the better of me. The free hand is a little rough for example. I'm going to try a little free hand on every non Black Legion character model from now on to try to get better.

Next up for this blog is probably going to be some Black Legion Plague Marines, painted using Latro's cool method.

01-02-2009, 01:40
Nice job. Looking forward to more.

02-02-2009, 22:00
More stuff!

Here's my first attampt at a deamonette. She was fun to paint, the first of a possible six. I went for pale skin and leopard skin markings. I actually stole this scheme from a Warseer member who was doing a cool looking mottled black and red effect on his marines. Does anyone remember his log? I can't find it anymore and would love to find the skin recipe again.

Digital cameras are unforgiving, you can't see that little dot under her eye with the naked eye.

And bringing sexy back;

Next up tonight, my first Plague Marine and maybe some better pictures of my under construction Black Legion.

02-02-2009, 22:17
And while I'm at it, here's the rest of the Black Legion. I've posted most of this before but I've taken some new better photos and might as well put everything together.

First up, the Marine squad. These guys were the first ever thing that I painted that I was happy with. 7 years or so later I think they still hold up.

Then, the Khorne guys. They were painted before I learned how to highlight red, so any appearance of subtlety is purely accidental.

And finally their rhino. Not really happy with the red on here, I think I will go back and paint it in solid colour with edge highlights. And I've just noticed that it's really dusty. Note to self; dust before photographing.

03-02-2009, 00:07
And here's the Plague Marine I've been working on. This is my first attamp at the new wash based painting. I used Latro_'s cool Plague Marine recipe. I tried to stick to the same colours and style as the rest of my Black Legion. The biggest problem was making black look dirty and used but still look like black. I hope the full unit of 7 blends in with the rest of the army.

03-02-2009, 00:25
Looks sweet dude, Its really tricky to do cult marines in a BL army and keep the army unified, you pulled it off though.

06-02-2009, 01:00
Thanks Latro. These plague marines have been sitting in my wardrobe for about 3 years waiting to be painted. I never had the insipation or nerve to try it until I saw your Death Guard.

WIPS. Here's a little comparison so you can see the magic effect of the new washes and Latro's scheme. I won't be using it for any of the rest of my Black Legion, but it looks great on anything Nurgle related. The champion on the right has been washed, the other 3 are exactly the same, pre wash.

I expect to have the full unit of Plague Marines finished by Monday or Tuesday night. Then four more bikers and I finally have a 1000 point 40k army. Woohoo!

Also, does anybody remember the log I mentioned earlier? A guy did a black and red mottled chaos marine army. He painted a squad, a rhino, and some possessed before I lost track of it. It was a really unique scheme and I'd really love to find it again.

08-02-2009, 19:16
A cautionary tale. I think I overdid the washes on these guys. For my next batch of three I'm going to dilute the washes a little bit more. You can't really see it, but I freehanded some broken up Black Legion symbols onto the guys whose shoulder pads wouldn't take a transfer. The static grassing was done by my girlfriend, she'd like everyone to know.

3 more Plague Marines, 2 more bikers!

15-02-2009, 22:55
And after only one week more than I expected, they're finished!

May I present to you, in all their plaguey glory, my completed plague marine squad. As led by aspiring champion Latro. Hope you don't mind the name check.

Only two more bikers for my first ever 1000 points!

25-04-2009, 19:47
Threadromancy! It's been two and a half months since I lasted updated this log. In that time I've moved twice and obviously haven't had a lot of time to get any painting done. Also, in the first place I lived we didn't have internet access. As you can imagine I moved again very quickly. Anyway, back on track.

Here is a bloodletter. He was a great looking bloodletter, if I do say so myself. Then I put a coat of Purity Seal on him and he turned into a blurry, chalky mess. Thanks to the good folks of warseer I learned that a coat of ardcoat can removed the chalkyness. It worked, but now he's much shinier than my other models and most of the detail is very hard to see.

I'm very disappointed with him, you can only really see the original paint work on the forearm. So much blending, gone to waste. Let this be a lesson about checking any spray on varnish before you use it.

Another thing I've noticed is that these guys are very hard to photograph in macro.

More to come!

25-04-2009, 20:21

1000 points of Black Legion. 7 years in the making. Finally finished. Two of these bikers were painted more than a year ago, two are new. One of them has a terminator combi-melta with the bolter parts removed as a melta gun. I can't believe it. They're done.

25-04-2009, 21:36
Very nice models. Really liking the way you've painted them, not over the top in the slightest.

Love them

25-04-2009, 22:39
Its great to see a Black Legion army, and one painted at a good level.

Look forward to seeing more!

25-04-2009, 22:57
We are returned!

Looking great. You're much too modest about the berserkers, they look great.

I'm working on black legion too, and I greatly look forward to stealing ideas, I mean watching your progress!

25-04-2009, 23:17
looking good any more updates?

26-04-2009, 00:10
looking good any more updates?

Seeing as you asked! Here are some random bits and pieces.

This guy has been painted for a couple of years. I think he'll be the first of a unit of chosen. He was my favourite model for a long time, I really like the bone. For some reason his green eyes aren't showing up on camera.

Next up is my objective marker. He used to be a bezerker but met an unfortunate end at the hands of our, now sadly deceased dog bubbles. So now he's an objective marker. 10,000 year old armour has to be worth fighting over.

This guy is the first of the next unit I'm going to paint. They are khorne marked marines. They're made with a combination of berzerker and regular marine parts. They won't have any red to set them apart from the bezerkers.

And finally a concept/WIP for some summoned lesser deamons. I nicked this from an old issue of the online fantasy magazine. I have 2 more built, they take a lot of work. I don't know if I like the typical beastman brown skin, I might repaint it as something more demonic.

27-05-2009, 18:40
It's alive! I've been at painting again. I painted a little force for Lord of the Rings before getting back to 40k. This guy has been a month in the making. Yes, I am a slow painter. Once again, he was ripped directly from an old heavy metal masterclass.

I'm pretty happy with him, he may not be a smooth as my Sicarius figure, but I think the slightly rougher look suits Chaos Marines. Any and all comment or criticism is appreciated.

28-05-2009, 03:03
ah, I see someone read a White Dwarf Master Class . . .

But seriously awesome work on the Blood Reaver. Always had a soft spot for him. Did you do his Hamadrya?

28-05-2009, 19:15
ah, I see someone read a White Dwarf Master Class . . .

But seriously awesome work on the Blood Reaver. Always had a soft spot for him. Did you do his Hamadrya?

You know what, you're right! I had a severe lack of artistic inspiration and copied it stroke for stroke. But on the other hand I think those masterclasses are great. I'm a pretty good painter I think, you can judge for yourself by looking at the pics in my log, and I'm pretty good for 3 reasons.

1) Time. And patience. I've been painting for about 12 years now. I shudder to remember that first box of multipart Chaos Warriors I ever painted.

2) The kind folks of Warseer schooling me in the ways of the greatness of new GW washes.

3) Copying 'Eavy Metal Masterclasses from WD. Even if you just copy it you learn so much about layering and colour combinations it's not even funny.

Anyway, I divest. The Hamadrya is on my to do list, but I'm not too attached to it. I actually have a theory that the Hamadrya is the driving force behind the Red Corsairs, animating the battered remains of Huron to lead the legion. It's just a little too suspicious looking.

Here's my army as it stands now. 1000 points of Black Legion. Anyone out there with some experience taking full army shots, any advice you have for getting a better shot would be great.

And finally for today my next work in progress unit. A Khorne marked marine unit. The are made with a 2:1 mix of standard marine parts and bezerker parts to make them stand out a little. The test mini has been painted, as you can see. I wasn't going to post WIP pictures in this blog originally, but all of the legendary blogs on warseer do it, so who am I to argue with success?

05-06-2009, 16:32
A little bit of progress. And more importantly an couple of pictures to show that painting black is not cheating, or an easy way out. At least four layers of colour on the black, and it's almost unnoticable when the other colours go on. The test mini is hidden away at the back there.

Plus, it's Summer! No more setting up elaborate light setting to take pictures. Good old sunlight does the job now.

05-06-2009, 17:35
Very nice black there! Care to give a tutorial?

06-06-2009, 02:13
It's nothing special really. Spray black, repaint black areas with chaos black, broad highlight 75:25 chaos black:codex grey, next highlight 50:50 chaos black codex grey, final fine highlight codex grey. I'll pop some work in progress shots tomorrow.

06-06-2009, 09:32
they look almost ghostly or source-lit in the pictures. good work

07-06-2009, 17:07
So here's how I do black. IT's quick and messy, but that doesn't matter since it gets tidied up by the other colours when they are added later.

I didn't bother to show repainting the black after the basecoat, it doesn't look very interesting. So, next step, 75/25 black and codex grey in broad highlights.

Then 50/50 of the same colours, narrower strokes.

And finally a fine single line highlight of pure codex grey.

Pardon the variable quality of the photos, I'm relying on natural light. You really can't see how harsh the highlight are once the other colours go on.

Fantastic, fantastic stuff. I'm absolutely loving Sicarius, and everything else for that matter. Great stuff!

16-06-2009, 16:20

Space Marine Bob.

Black Legion took a little bit of a rest this week as I caught the ultramarines bug. Say what you will about the GW promotion of these guys, it is a nice colour scheme.

So, as you can see above, here is the start of my ultramarine squad. It's probably going to end up as only one squad, but you never know. Assault on black reach is looking tempting.

Fantastic, fantastic stuff. I'm absolutely loving Sicarius, and everything else for that matter. Great stuff!

Thank you very much kind sir. The Sicarius love inspired me to paint Space Marine Bob here.

16-06-2009, 17:01
I just can agree with Joewrightgm, AWESOME work.
It would be nice to hear that you would start an eldar army.

10-07-2009, 16:30
Woooo, i like Huron, looks kinda similar . . . i can see you followed the masterclass to the very letter!! i tried but then went AWOL, thats the problem with working with non GW paints :(
i must admit i am using your pictures of huron as inspiration for my own :D
so thanks for that!

10-07-2009, 17:27

Stuff is looking really good, keep it up. Look forward to more updates

10-07-2009, 17:38
Huron looks really really good.
very much liking the look of the Black Legion guys aswell, a mix of everything in there!
The Smurf looks very nice aswell :)

It's alive. After months of being distracted by non 40k stuff I'm back. Those Black Legion marines from a few posts back are well on their way to completion now. I'll probably have pictures tomorrow or Sunday.

In other, semi-related news, I refuse to play Space Hulk with Blood Angels. Loyalist scum. So, two boxes of chaos terminators and two terminator lord kits later and my Black Legion Space Hulk boarding party is well under way. I'm trying to match everything on my guys to the boxed set to avoid confusion. So in the picture you can see the stand ins for Valencio ( twin linked bolter and chainfist, charging in), Leon (autocannon replacing assault cannon, don't think anyone will mind, and powerfist, scanning the room), Sergeant Lorenzo ( pointed bolter, power weapon and cape, with bare head) and one other. The last guy was put together before I decided to copy the blood angels exactly. The bases are just corrugated styrene sheets cut up with a scissors and filed down to take away sharp edges.

Pardon the rush job on the photo, but you can see the jist.

09-09-2009, 20:09
It's alive! I'm back again after various forays into fantasy and Bloodbowl.

These guys are almost finished. Just some touching up of the black to do, and a few little things I may have missed, cables, pouches etc. Unfortunatly they've turned out much better than the last basic marines I painted a few years ago. I suppose that's one of the problems of collecting a neverending army, as you get better you start to see the difference between your old models and your recent ones.

09-09-2009, 20:18
And my 40k Black Legion / Space Hulk terminators. These were really a labour of love. In fact these 12 cost more than the Space Hulk boxed set!

First up, from squad one, left to right; Aiming Guy, Assault Cannon Guy and Power Weapon Captain.

Also from squad one, left to right; Chainfist Guy, Gimme a Hug Lightning Claw Guy and Generic Guy. I didn't have the energy left to model the guy ripping up the floor.

And from squad two; Battledamaged Dead Genestealer Guy, Thunder Hammer Captain (the only one who can't be used in 40k) and Pointing Guy.

Last but not least, from squad 2; Auspex Guy ( in 40k he has ripped it from the hands of a dead marine ), Librarian ( well, Sorceror ) and Heavy Flamer Guy.

As much as possible without very serious conversions I tried to keep them in more or less the same poses as the guys they are replacing from the blood angels side.

09-09-2009, 20:47
Hey there :-)

really really REALLY nice painted chaos marines.
and i really don't say this often ;)

normally I don't like the black legion, but yours have really gotten me the feeling to start them myself....someday :-)

I like all your stuff so far :-)
and 7 years for this 1k pts? wow. that's long but really worth the effort :-)
haha, funny thing: your legion looks really good it their early stages, only with the grey highlights.
I might borrow this for a seperate force.

Your black legion look really great!

19-09-2009, 16:24
Everything is looking really good. I like that shield on the terminator. Keep up the good work.

20-09-2009, 00:01
Work in progress.

Still needs a lot of work obviously, but I'm pretty happy with the face. Pardon the washed out photo.

Slightly better view of the face on this photo.

21-09-2009, 00:13
Nice work so far on the Lord, he looks very "steely"! (I love making up words!)

21-09-2009, 19:54
Nice work so far on the Lord, he looks very "steely"! (I love making up words!)

He's not a Lord, he's a terminator champion. No plastic HQ figures for me!

This guy is being painted to what I've decided to call 'New Tabletop Character Standard'. Catchy title I know. I wanted to knock him out pretty fast but I keep spotting new little details that want painting so he's taking longer, but nothing as smooth as the work I did on Huron or Sicarius. Or Griff from my other log.

Things still to be finished; Highlight the metallic areas.
Paint the bone, horns, skulls and fur.
Clean up where the dark and light parts of the cape meet.

Things I am happy with; The face is one of the best I've painted.
The ax looks pretty cool.
I like the various gems and eye scattered about the model.
The back of the cape looks pretty good.

Things I am unhappy with; His teeth don't look good in macro.
The inside of the cape could be smoother.
That gap at his torso.
My photgraphy skills.

21-09-2009, 23:53
I think the axe looks great. I really like the eyes and the gem on the face on his leg.

22-09-2009, 02:11
He's not a Lord, he's a terminator champion. No plastic HQ figures for me!

Excellent, then I look forward to seeing some Uber HQ models :) your Termie squad has a fine leader in this guy!

Very nice work on the axe, and as mentioned the eyes etc on the leg armour.

13-10-2009, 20:23
Super-dodgy pics update. Bit late at night for setting up good lighting.

First up; Dave. Dave is the stand-in for lightning claw guy. He wants to give you a hug. An evil hug.

And what I have so far.

Again, pardon the terrible photos. This flipping project is taking so long that nobody will be playing Space Hulk anymore by the time I've finished.

13-10-2009, 22:19
Good work, Dave looks like a very sweet guy, I'm sure his hugs won't be that violent! Nice paintjob :)

19-10-2009, 22:19

I bought some rare earth magnets from Hasslefree to magnetise the Terminators so they could be used in 40k and Space Hulk. Not that I play either very much, but you know, it's nice to have options. The first two were a little bit fiddley but I got the hang of it on the third one and it's solid as a rock now. I can't recommend rare earth magnets enough.

And totally unrelated, my Strange Wolves. They are 50% chaos marine/50% space wolves. They are going to be Chosen in the codex. Just a quick question for the Chaos experts; I have the codex and I'm pretty sure this loadout is legal for chosen but would you mind checking.

Aspiring champ with power weapon.
Icon bearer with icon of choas glory.
Chosen with power fist.
Chosen with lightning claws.
2 chosen with plasma guns.
4 chosen with bolter, ccw and BP.

I know it's probably a horrible mess in terms of effectiveness, but it's all about using all the nice options from the box set while still being legal.

19-10-2009, 22:24
Very handsome CSM; the slightly monotone impression adds to the army, and should go well with some colourful spots somewhere. Good marble/engergy effect on that Terminator's power axe by the way!

29-10-2009, 16:46
You only see what your eyes want to see
How can life be what you want it to be
You're Chosen
When your heart's not open

You're so consumed with how much you get
You waste your time with hate and regret
You're Chosen
When your heart's not open

Yes that loadout is legal, you can have 5 guys with special weapon options.
I'm working on a unit of chosen of my own in my blog. Five are sorcerers with either meltaguns or flamers. Can't wait to see yours with paint on them. Good job on the Black Legion!

30-10-2009, 05:14
Man this is gold. A really good example of how to push, push, push through an army and knock them out quick! The one black squad with the hard highlights got me excited as I thought they were sort of CSM versions of thousand sons with the glowing joints but it was just highlights. Brilliantly executed though and bad-ass lord.

15-11-2009, 22:05
Today's episode of TKM's log is called 'Old Chaos Marines are Awesome Too!' or 'The Dangers of Ebay'.

So I was browsing ebay for deals on choas space marines. I came across this box set, from third edition I think, with no bids. I put a maximum bid of 15 euro or so, about how much 5 modern plastic marines cost in Ireland. I won, final bid about 6 euro. Awesome cheap marines!

So they arrived and I started to assemble them. They still look good even after 13 years. But being the pack rat I am, I needed a full squad to match them. Back to ebay and 5 euro later, ta-da! A brilliant power claw champion.

So that bring me up to six, but they are starting to look a little mono-pose. I need some inspiration. Ebay, here I come. First up I got the codex from the same era to try to remember what squads looked like back then, then I found these.

That's another 8 euro thank you very much. At this stage I have nine marines, almost a squad, so I started painting.

They actually blend in pretty well with the current chaos marines if you paint them in a coherent scheme. So now I need to go further. At the moment I'm browsing ebay looking for classic special weapon, heavy weapon and icon bearing marines. Anyone spots a deal on those on ebay then let me know.

16-11-2009, 08:14
Oh man, I love the old 2nd edition Marines, they are going to make a great addition!!

Not exactly Chaos but anyway. CMdante says that he always takes a lot of close ups of wips to help spot any problems early. So here are some wip photos. The head is almost completely done, the armour isn't finished yet. It needs to be shaded and have some paint chips added.

Sweet looking Black Legion, much better than mine ;) Im really fond of the way you're painting Khan too... Subbed :)

14-01-2010, 00:04
Cool log TwoKingMicks!

I like specially the way you paint all the characters, they are really great!

And was a surprise for me seeing somebody making things with those old 2nd edition CSM, I have a load of those guys by here, I'm trying to get rid of them in the link of my signature, if you want more of those guys, let me know :D

Awesome idea with the Chaos terminators, useful both for 40k and Space Hulk, I would never occur to me make that. :)

Keep it up!! ;)

03-02-2010, 17:39
Pardon the slightly washed out photos. I was painting this guy up for the local GW's paint a Vermin Lord exactly like 'eavy metal competition. I started to really like the model, even though I have only a passing interest in fantasy and not much interest at all in Skaven. So in looking for something useful for him to do, he was replaced on a round base and is now a 40k generic summoned greater deamon.

I present Sniffles, Vermin Lord.

04-02-2010, 05:19
Extremely good paint job on Sniffles. Subdued color, but highly detailed. I like it! Though the model itself is a bit blah imo, and I don't care to much for it, the paint gives it cool points, especially the bits of fur.

Thanks for the compliments. As for tutorials, I've mostly used the heavy metal

Thanks. I do a lot of posting on my iPod touch especiallly when working on my models and not near the computer. What I find sometimes that you have to watch for is it will break up your message sometimes by inserting 'returns' where they shouldn't be. I find this usually happens when you scroll through your message and then go back to the end to continue to type...at least that's when it happens to me.
