View Full Version : Dwarves and Goblins, trying to make two balanced armies.

Hi all,

I'm trying to make two balanced armies for lord of the rings so me and some friends can have some hard fought close games. I don't want one side to be overpowered.

I've chosen Goblins and Dwarves because I've already got a Goblin army so I dont really want to change it to much and I really like the look of the dwarf models especially the Khazad guard.

So here are the army list I've come up with.

Goblins 600 Points.

Model count. 68

Durburz Goblin King. 60

Shaman. 45

20 Archers. 100

20 Spears. 100

20 Shields. 100

Cave troll with troll chain. 85

Cave troll with spear. 81

4 Prowlers with two handed weapons. 28 (these I dont actually have yet)

I thought if I wanted to make the Army upto 700 then I would add a Goblin Drum in.


Dwarves 598 Points.

Model count. 40.

Balin. 75
Durins Axe 20

Captain. 60

Dwarf with Banner. 38

8x Khazad Guard. 88

2x Vault Warden Teams. 50

Ballista. 60

4x Two Handed Weapon. 36

8x Shields. 72.

11x Bowmen. 99

And If I wanted to make this army upto 700 I thought about adding six Iron guard leaving me with 12 points.


What do you all think? Do they seem balanced or will one army destoy the other? It kind of looks to me like its in the dwarves favour?

I would personally have the Goblins outnumber the Dwarfs, the higher Fight Value and Defence along with better Heroes and Equipment. Perhaps a 700:500 point ratio in favour of the Goblins?

Both armies are pretty balanced. Moving to 700 you definitely want a second shama. Fury stops goblins melting awaywhen they hit break point.

I don't take vault warden teams, and have a tendency to make pairs of Iron and Khazad Guard (3 dice, one at minus 1, to win the combat, rolling a dice with +1 to kill).

I'd take gimli and more dwarfs rather than Balin with Durins axe against goblins. You are just killing goblins.

Don't be disappointed if one troll gets killed by arrow fire on the way in. And keep moving the archers forwards in order to swarm and surround the enemy.

I will tell you this tactic as i use it in my goblin army. Keep a Shaman (With fury active) within 6" of Durburz as he will automatical pass courage tests when broken which will in turn make all goblins withing 12" of him pass there courage. This is a ver good tactic however there is 1 hole. It doesn't affect Trolls so make sure to keep the sharman near him too.
