I'm kicking around starting a new army. I haven't bought any models yet, so I'll be pretty flexible about suggestions. The three I'm leaning towards are below, but I'm open to suggestions. NO Eldar, of any variety, I don't think they're cheesy I'm just not an elf guy.

Black Templar's with Legion of the Damned Allies: This army would be based on a historical account of a battle that supposedly happened during the first crusade. It would have guys on bikes with lances, neophytes with bolters to represent light infantry auxiliaries, and have LotD squads backing it up. I don't really care about effectiveness as looking good. I don't have the BT codex yet so the list might change, but this gives you an idea.

Kroot Mercs: They just look fun.

Feral Orks: Same reason.

im going feral orks, they fit me very well
but heres what i do
1.look at every topic about said army on this board
2.look at all the minatures the army has
3.read every codex about said army
4.find out what you like about the armies and brainstorm fluffy ideas
5.take months to come to a conclusion
seemed to work for me :)

I'd like to throw everything you've said in the bin and nudge you towards 40k's most overlooked, but most characterful army...

DEATHWING

They're dowsed in character, they're dowsing the enemy in mobile firepower and best of all, you won't have many minis to paint and it's probably the cheapest army to buy.

Kroot Mercs

Just a wonderful army.

Plus it gets some intresting responses when they ask what army you collect and you say Kroot, mostly challenges to a jungle fight from catachan players, always a laugh, that battle.

Feral Orks. The most characterful choice of the bunch.

I've started a Speed Freak army and never had so much fun playing this game in my life. Orks Roks!

are you looking for an army that will play well, or are you wanting something with character and don't particularly care whether it loses? And do you love or hate conversions?

If you love character and conversions, I'd definitely go orks.

I hadn't really thought about Deathwing, actually.

I'm looking for something thats fun to play. I like converting, and I want an army that has alot of character. Most importantly, it MUST be a tactical challenge. I love my Black Legion. I like my Orks and Tau, but want something differant.

Ya know that Deathwing thing is growing on me.

and let it grow all it wants. you have everything in a deathwing army. wat conversions? theres no libraian in termi armor, nor is there a tech marine, nor is there a halfway decent master with termie armor. want tactically challenging armies? try being out numbered 4 or 5 to one. and, best of all, you only need 1 case to transport about... 3000 points of an army.

How about Witch Hunters or Deamon Hunters? They sorta play like marines but require actual tactical thinking rather than pointing a lascannon at tank then screaming BOOM, or throwing a JP chaplin around the battlefield slaughtering anything in its path.

Feral Orcs! Please, for the love of God, not more terminators.

Are we talking about the same army here, when I see deathwing I just see bone coloured terminators which look as though they have no affiliation to Dark Angels whatsoever, with "feathers" on them that look totally out of place.

Is there more background information on them? because my DA codex is pretty useless when it comes to Death Wing, another major downside is they cost more points than regular marine terminators, yet get no real advantage over them..

Yes I second Witch Hunters, possibly the most fun army to play with, using both basic bolter wielding troops as well as plenty of specialist units, not to mention the fun you can have with Faith Points.

From the original list - Feral Orks:D
Other suggestions - Deathwing:skull:

I'm evenly split between these two.:D

wait. what? D.A codex being useless for the Death Wing? page 4, bottom left. tells you exactally whats in a deathwing orginization list. and they cost more cuz theyre fearless and never retreat. and if all youre seeing is bone white termies without character, the army that was painted is either from the guy at 'eavy metal that did the Ogre kingdoms book, or by some kid that dont know how to paint. on line says it all. "tough to feild, tough as nails"

Feral Orks are nice, just try and avoid the mad Boy Blitz and it can be really challenging. I play a small (1,000 pt) feral ork list based on shooting. It can get scary playing that.

If Deathwing is growing on you how about a Bad Moonz Deth Wing. All orks in Mega-armor using the Deathwing Rules. That's got character and is rarely ever seen. I think I heard about one guy doing it. One.

I'm going to tell you what I'll tell anybody, Imperial Guard are THE best army to play, no matter what kind of army you like, no matter what type of play you prefer the IG can provide the goods.

?? that wasn't my point, I was on about actual background on them, something that explains more about their history etc. otherwise to me they are just a bunch of vanilla termies but in an unusual colour.

they aren't fearless, they get the stubborn rule which isn't very useful, since all marines have ATKNF anyway its really a poor upgrade to pay pts for... i'd rather take regular termies anyday and save the points

hmmm Witch Hunters

Very nice army visually and i agree with xander K the acts of faith rock psychic powers are also dead on especially the awesome hammer of the witches :P

As for deathwing well i see it as this just an excuse for beardo players to take a bland lookin army and OD it on assault cannons Things modelled around one variety of model an army it does not make

an army a good one relies on a mixture of models being brought together for a tactical purpose not even the chaos cult lists rely on one specific unit to achieve the task this is what i hate about A: Deathwing armies and B: (although not being one specific sort of model but being one disciplin i.e aspect warriors) is the Biel Tan Swordwind
