Quick question are assault weapons single handed or two handed, specifically melta guns, and sonic weapons. Do not have rule book or codex with me.

Being assault has no relation to the number of hands said weapon requires to use (ref: pistols and storm bolters).

Two handed, unless you're a Biker, in which case one apparently ;)

there is no handedness in the new codex

as long as you still have a CC weapon and one that can be combined to provide an extra attack it tends not to matter if you are carrying somthing else. But many special CC weapons can only be combined with a weapon of the same type.

Ie you have melta gun, as long as you have CC and BP you still get 2 attack in close combat
(which was a mess up on GWs part making the worse plasma pistol more points on raptors)
Bikes don't require any hands to drive ether

(and I've seen a few models that hold the melta or flamer in one hand)

The only ranged weapons who have any kind of rules regarding the number of CC attacks are weapons of the Pistol type. Weapons of the assault type cannot usually be used in combat at all (at least they have no rules for doing so).

Indeed, Assault weapons (which most pistols count as too) have the advantage of being able to fire whilst still allowing the user to assault into combat, the drawback is that they only replace 1 weapon (usually) in the wargear of thier owner (eg bolt pistol for assault marines) so you dont gain the extra attack from having 2 CCW's on that unit (in this case, unit refers to the single marine, rather than the whole squad).. which is usually offset by the additional wounds the replacement weapon can dish out anyway (particularly with flamers, love template weapons!)

One would assume that they are 1-handed weapons in this case, or that their volume of fire means that 1 or 2 handed use matters little, as long as it's pointed in roughly the right direction.

True, but not the case with CSM, who retain their BP and CCW so still get an extra attack in CC.
But the answer is 2 handed, only pistols are one handed.
