Just thought I would post the WIPs for my Space Hulk board game.
I have a Brood of 31 Old School Stealers and a Brood Lord. I am going to paint the Brood in the classical blue and purple colour scheme. I am also going to rebase all of the Stealers using platicard to give them a uniform look that will be detailed and quick to do.
http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk57/GKTerminators/Space%20Hulk/DSCN0960.jpg

And here are some GS Hulk bases that I have made.

These bases will be used for the Brood Lord and the Terminators (I am 90% sure they will be Space Wolves!!).

ME TO!! I just read something about its possible re-release on BOLS. There are not any details as of yet, but the rumour alone is enough to get my heart pumping!!!!

I wonder if the new release will be seperate from the current 40K rules or incorporate them in a kill team sort of game play? I am hoping for a completely seperate system that keeps the game fast and furious!!

Those bases are sweet. I use a bit of laticed wire for mine. I have recently restarted my hulk project after twenty years!

Also having played my first game of Space Hulk in years, today, I have remembered why I loved it. Truly a great, balanced, cinematic experience. I am even more inspired to get all my stealers, even the hybrids from Genestealer painted now. Thanks Brother Constantine.:)

Very Nice! I actually have a 1st Edition in the mail on its way to me that I ordered off of Ebay. My hope is that it will be a way to get my GF into 40k. I hadn't thought to re-base them but I might just have too. GL with the painting. I'm going to watch this thread as I'll have to paint mine too.

The Brood Lord awakens!!! (and streatches LOL!!!)

I just added some venom sacks to his talons for that extra bit of scaryness!!

I have now applied 3-4 layers of the Blue and Purple colours of my Brood Lord.
I intend to detail the carapace further, but the flesh is pretty much where it to going to stay.
I am going to paint the rending, sything claws and toes black in a way that makes them look shinny. The teeth will be regular bone coloured. I am not to sure about the venom sacks yet... I am toying with the idea of giving them Bioluminescence, perhaps green or red. I was also throwing the idea of the BL having glowing eyes. What are your thoughts on the glowing ideas?

i love the back to traditional colour scheme on the 'patriarch ;) rhough to be honest i think i prefer the wolf priest helm when it was still completely the plastic helmet, shaved into a vague wolf-skull shape.

Brother Constantine
20-02-2009, 23:18
The Claws, talons, and tongue have now been done. The claws etc.. were done using Chaos black, Codex grey, and Skull white. For the tongue I used Red Gore, Bleached bone, Blood red, and Skull white.
I have also added some detail to the carapace in the form of dots, I have seen similar patterns in nature and thought that it would break up the solid blue and even hint at the presence of bumps on the carapace adding more texture.

Good idea on including Broodlord in Space Hulk!

Hm, the broodlord's fitting far better in with the classical colour scheme than I ever thought it would. It lacks something however - the addition of adrenal glands/venom sacs to his schything talons was a good move, but the painting might come together if you paint the exposed inner sacs acidic green. The dotted painting of his carapace fits well in - maybe you could add darker/lighter streaks to his purple body areas to make it even more striking?

Classic painting on a classic game. I like it! :)
I also believe painting the inner part of the toxin sacs bright orange will tie in nicely with the blue and purple, while green might make it look too much like the oldschool "disco" style Tyranids; not realy my cup of tea. I'd realy like to see one of your Space Wolf Terminators painted up.

Brother Constantine

How exactly did you paint the blue? It looks fantastic :)

Thank you.
I based him with Ultramarines blue spay paint, washed hin with an old school Citidel dark blue wash, then I proceded to mix regal blue, Ultramarine blue, ice blue, and skull white as I layered him.
I am not a great painter so the skills I use are very basic and the result are difinatly within the reach of most of us mortals :D I just looked at the model before I started to paint it and payed attention to where the "natural" highlights were, then added lighter shades of blue accordingly.

I am still considering painting the venom sacks green, I might even make them glow!!

Thank you all for your feedback. I will try to continue work on this figure and post pics as time permits :skull:

That Broodlord looks really good using the classic colors for genestealers. I'm not a huge fan of that color scheme, but it works wonders with that model.
The wolf priest helmet is looking awesome by itself, can't wait to see it mounted on the body that goes with it :)
Do you play Space Hulk with the original rules or did you make your own?

I have the last boxed set that came out and I use it in terms of rules.

I don't actually have a body for the SW yet :cries: I was just playing around to see if I could sculpt a Wolf Priest's helm. I do have a lot of ideas for him and hopefully I will be able to make them a reality in the not to distante future. I think I am going to paint the helmet to see how the sculpt looks with paint before I commit it to a body. I have a couple of extra Terminator heads lying around so I can still try to improve on the final result if i'm not 100% satisfied with it.

Do you have Termies or 'Stealers that you have worked on?

Looking forward to watching this progress. Space Hulk has always been a firm favourite of mine from the first edition of the game (those plastic genestealers have withstood the test of time well!).

The broodlord (one of the few nid models I like) is shaping up nicely. Loving the retro colour scheme!

Will be watching this one.

Well my Brood Lord is 99% finished!!!
I just need to tidy up the edge of the base and give him a protective coating and he's done. I am happy with the way the Venom sacks Bioluminescence turned out, this was my first attempt at source lighting and I think it's not to bad at all.
I am not sure if I am happy with the eyes though... I think it may be that the eye in the bottom pic is too big. let me know what you think.

No plans for a custom board. Do you have any comments as to what you are not sure about with the source lighting? Is it that you don't like SL or that it is not painted properly?

Do you have Termies or 'Stealers that you have worked on?

I have a bunch of genestealers (both old and new) though they're not nearly as good looking as that broodlord (if you can call a tyranid "good looking"). They were originally for 40k so they're walking on little happy patches of grass when I play them in Space Hulk... must be a botanical garden or something.
And I'm going in with straight marines, no terminators, mostly because I like the weaponry better. I guess that's no longer Space Hulk at this point but Space Crusade :) That's why I was asking about the rules, as you can tell I'm not really playing by the book myself.

Keep the good work on the broodlord. I am definitely looking forward to seeing more of your genestealers in this thread.

I love the bases- I'm starting work on a hulk project (played back in the original all those years ago) but wouldn't get such a good effect. As for the light sourcing- its nice but not very natural, there seems to be light where light wouldn't reach- I might suggest thinking about how a drybrush would pick it up as a rough guide- I'm doing a lot of light sourcing and it is a learning curve.

I can't believe the person who suggested space hulk was balanced!

Anyway, I'm working on a Space Hulk rule mod- just to include chaos termies and a points system for now- oh and the broodlord- if anyone's interested in a copy (i've done quite a lot of game design) PM me- its not groundbreaking but it does work a bit fairer!

I will go on the record as saying that space hulk is indeed more or less balanced. More so than most games GW produces anyways. Unless you use the genestealer expansion, the 'stealers cannot shoot back. This gives the game a tactical challenge in forcing the marine player to best choose his avenues of offense and defense.

As for the chaos termie rules, have you ever seen the space hulk campaign rules? The rules for chaos termies is basically identical to those of the imperial player, with a few weapon tweaks.

Its not a bad attempt at trying to incorporate them into the game, but I am sure they could use a bit of adjustment.

On to the topic at hand, I really like the bases as well. Very sharp. The broodlord should make a more appropriate patriarch model concerning GW's recent fluff changes.

samiens
26-02-2009, 15:50
Yes, I've seen all the expansions but I wanted to bring them in line with current codex chaos- just a bithere and there- plus I have reworked the odd element of normal terminators etc just to get it working a bit more slickly. As for it being balanced- even statistically that isn't the case- don't get me wrong- tactically negaging and unbelievably atmospheric but anyone who's half decent will win all the time with Stealers.

Back on topic- love the broodlord's inclusion and sticking to the classic scheme- just wondering what you were going to do with blips? (mine have mostly disappeared so I've made my own)

Brother Constantine
26-02-2009, 16:41

I know this question wasnt directed at me, but Litko is your friend for blips.

More so, you can get custom blips for little more than what they charge for the blips they have in stock.

For example: I asked Jim to make me a set of 31 blips
30mm opaque dark green with rounded corners using his standard blip face on the front with nine "1's", four "2's", nine "3's", two "4's", two "5's", two "6's", and three "0's" etched on the reverse side of the blip. As well as 2 opaque red blip tokens for ambush blips with nothing on the reverse. (there is no need for the other 6 ambush markers or to reach in a bag and pull an ambush blip to tell you if it is a malfunction of one genestealer. Just roll a D6 when the ambush blip is revealed and on a 5 or 6, it is a single genestealer. All other results are scanner malfunctions)

All solid acrylic etched tokens with high visibility and nice graphics. The total came out to $25. Not bad considering that you would pay $18 for smaller, non-customized blips from him.

For his overwatch tokens, I had him etched the word "Jammed" on the reverse. he charged me $8 for that set which would cost $6 non-customized. (He sells jammed tokens as well, but for the sake of saving space and money, I thought this worked rather well.)

I like the old stuff myself, but after losing mine to water damage from firefighters, I think these work a treat and refuse to pay high ebay costs just to reacquire the older tokens.

Failing that, shrinky dinks make great tokens as well (solid plastic so they will last), and you can print off the original space hulk counters that can be found on numerous places on the net. Its not too pricey, but if you don't have the time to do all the printing and stuff your self, then litko is worth the money to save you that time.

That brood lord ROCKS!
Must admint I don't think the Source Lighting works, just looks like grren bile on it's carapace. But then again I am not a fan of SL in general.
I love the original stealer colours you used, I am going to do the same for my force when I reinvest in the best game GW ever made.
Even if they screw it up this time (portents say yes) then at least the tiles will be available at a reasonable price to use the first edition rules with :)

*Itching to paint red again* - Those sure look the business, albeit I think the red looks too purple.. Perhaps a slight green wash'd do the trick ;)

And that deceased marine needs some dust. It's been lying in there for decades after all..

I think it might be the lighting Goat, they don't look purple in real life. As for the dust...meh, I am saying that the throne room repels dust ;)

Very, very nice work. :) I think that you could enhance the look of the battle damage even more by placing even harder highlights on the lower part of the "holes". Like the lower edge of the dent in the armour reflecting the light.

Shaping up I see? Very nice progress.

And now that more of the minis are painted the red is showing quite normal, you're right it's all about the lighting.
Eyes look nasty. And the metallics are suberb!!

I still have the Helm. I just thought I would focus on one chapter at a time.....I may be making a Space Wolf Terminator squad or two after x-mas.

Great looking Termies, If I may ask what color and how did you get the effect on the eyes, really pops out on the model.

I know that i should be punished for resurecting a thread this old:(, but.......... I have just ordered the Deathwing terminator squad from the Dark Vengeance boxed set and couldn't resist! I am going to be magnatizing the Assault Cannon arm so that I can swap it out with a heavy flamer, and I am going to be magnatizing the terminator's feet so that they can stand on regular, and scratch built Space Hulk specific bases. I am also thinking that this will provide me with the motivation to finish my Blood Angels.

I am thinking about buying an air brush, but want to keep it affordable....Has anyone got experience with non-compressor airbrushes? I would appreciate any comments that could help me in my decision to get an airbrush or not, thx.

I will post on my progress with the Deathwing as soon as I receive the models!

Hey Bro' Constantine, nice to see this thread alive!

I am doing the same with dark vengeance. I purchased it mainly for the chaos business but find myself unable to sell the dark angels simply because I feel compelled to paint up Cloud Runner and a squad.

Must.

Paint.

Deathwing!

Been working our way throught the old campaign book using our own adapted rules between editions to allow use of genestealer and deathwing. Great game.

Your painting is, as discussed, sweet but that was a while ago, finished all your bits yet?

Brother Constantine
23-11-2012, 21:01
@ Brightblade, I would love to see what you are doing with these cool DW models.

I apologize for once again resurrecting this thread, but at least this time I have some significant progress to share! Here is what I have accomplished so far:

I started by "de-twinning" the replica Terminators
http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk57/GKTerminators/Dark%20Angels/DW007.jpg

Next up is my Space Wolf Heavy Flamer conversion. It is magnatized so that I can switch between it and the Assault Cannon. Still needs a little tidying up, but I am pretty happy with it. I decided to keep the original ring of claws on the flamer because I am saying that they will represent 'Stealer trophies :D

http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk57/GKTerminators/Dark%20Angels/DW006.jpg

My first crack at bases

More bases:

http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk57/GKTerminators/Dark%20Angels/DWB006.jpg

Next I am making a base for the chain fist Terminator. I am making this base so that it looks like a broken floor tile. I want to make a base for the sergeant model also, but I want it to be unique... Does anyone have any ideas as to what will look awesome and keep with the theme of the other bases?

Brother Constantine
29-11-2012, 20:43
The "broken base is taking longer than expected, so here is a different tile that I made:

@ Precinctomega: I STILL have 5 Blood Angel Terminators to finish and haven't even thought about the 'Stealers!!! LOL :cries:
@ Lilloser: Thank you! I don't think that I will be making any casts. I could make you an original set though! :)

I just finished my final base this morning, so I will post pics of it soon.

Just read through this whole thread and there is some fantastic work in here. I think I may have been a little hastey in selling my Deathwing termis from DV. I only still have my 2nd edition Space Hulk set but I will pick up at least the tiles for the new edition at some point as threads like this remind me how much I love the game. Keep up the stellar work buddy. :)
