Wow nice lance, those battletech minis looks better than I remember. I've always wanted to play battletech but I could never justify starting another games, especially since I blew 60 bucks on a whole crap ton of Dark Age mechs, man I hate(d) wizkidz.

Thank you very much. Yeah the right one (hatchetman) is dark age. It just sucks because BT is not even at that point in the time line, Wizkidz just got over excited and had to make new mechs.....

nice work! what is battletech all about?

Battletech is about awesome and win. To give the dumbed down version its various medieval style societies duking it out with giant 30+ foot tall mechs and having basically knocked the snot out of eachother for so long that technology has been frozen/degrading for 300+ years and only recently rediscovered technology and the fact everyone too exhauseted from fighting all the time that technology has started to advance again. It's alot (and I mean alot) more involved for that but thats a quick and dirty premise. My semi-involved explanation would be at least 30+ pages long, suffice to say Battletech I'm a bit of a fluff junkie and actually think its even better than 40k. (better may not be right, because they're so hard to compare)

Awesome! Ill post my Davion Foxes teeth lance a little later on when I get home. I dont think my paint job could compare to those masterpieces though!

Battletech sounds fun, I used to love Mechwarrior, but the models...I dunno, I realize that it's impossible for them to really be all that dynamically posed, but every single one is just standing there looking straight forward. None of them are in strafing poses or stepping over debris, they just...stand there. Kinda boring.

That, and because there are few mechs I actually like the look of. The madcat and vulture, maybe a couple of others.

I hear ya. That was my big problem with BT before I started, but the game is just so darn cool I tend to not let the models get to me to much. I did chop the Zeus (big guy in front) legs at the knee and hip to try for a more "walking at ya" pose. It's important to note that they look so static because in this universe there are no mechs like in Gundam or Robotech, it's all slow (relatively) moving monsters doing battle with lots of cool guns (think Robo-jox minus the cool guns part).

These Mechs look really good. I might have to paint mine at some point (I've got roughly two batallions in a box, IS 3025 mostly, my favourite timeline), I haven't dared yet due to the vastly different scale to Warhammer minis. Do you think it's easier or harder to paint these?

The older ones i love, Hatchetman, Thug etc.. but i would love for them to come out again in 1/48? scale last time i saw those in the shop was 20+ years ago, then done by Revell... they would be nice scale to use in 40K as knights.. Nice painting btw!
And whilst on scale, how big are these mini's compared to 40K?

TheDean04
24-02-2009, 15:02
To Bloodknight: I find it is a bit easier only because of the expectations in the Battletech community tend to be much lower as far as painting quality goes. Also I did not use any highlights on the mechs and simply used a .005 micro to do all the black line work. However do you have the plastics or the metal ones, because I find the plastics very hard to paint do to lack of details.

To Rhaivaen: the guy on the far left is about 1cm taller than a marine.

They look great!

Which set are they from? I have been tring to get into Battletech for a while but I have found it hard to work you what sets to get, I mainly what to paint a Madcat :)

Bloodknight
24-02-2009, 23:39
I've got mostly metals (mostly pretty old minis, quite a few Unseen) and a few old plastics from the 2nd edition boxed set which I am not hell-bent on painting because of the reason you gave - utter lack of detail and bad casting quality on the plastics.

As for your minis again: I really love the Zeus cockpit, nicely done. And a question about the Centurion: is that a newer sculpt? The metal Centurions that I have are all in a striding pose with the autocannon arm aiming to the right and the head looking to the right, too.

You make me so happy that I want to cry.:cries:

Battletech was my first love back in '91. I have more than 500 unpainted miniatures here at home and I did just recently begin to paint a few of them.

Those were the days.:cries::cries::cries:

I bought a load of battletech blisters cheap on ebay last year - I got about a dozen or so for a quid each. I've painted a couple and really like them. I intend to get the box set at some point and start playing. I'll post a pic or two when I get home later.

Nice work nanktank! you going to base those fools :) I'm happy to see some other mechs on here!

Chaplin Davius - I did not buy any sets. These were all individual blisters. In hind sight a set may have been good but alas I did not buy one. As far as the Madcat goes he is a clan mech and I think there are a few clan sets but I might be wrong about that.

Bloodknight - The Centurion was purchased last year along with most of my other mechs. I know the one you are talking about. He must be an older version. I know the Iron Wind website sells one with a rotary AC-5.

Seved - 500 mechs! Wow! Get painting sir, I would love to see some more BT up in here! Also do you happen to have an unseen marauder or the MAC II?

well I havent checked in on this thread in a long while but here is a small update:

I voted 5 simply because it was Battle-Tech. My very first miniatures game! The paint jobs are cool, good to see they aren't the lame plastic type things that come in tall boxes like half the other dime a dozen games. I'd love to see you get your hands on an old school Warhammer, Atlas, and Mad-Cat mechs.

I'm actually in the process of stripping a bunch of old and shoddily assembled mechs from years ago. I'm still missing 1 or two, and I dont know where I put them, but my dad painted one so its kinda sentimental.
I know I have a vanquisher, atlas, ragnarok, and a yellow jacket. The others are mostly un-identified.
I also have quite a few Battle Tech Trading cards too.
Buying random battletech with a 3 dollar allowance ftw.

threewolftats

the ruleset is not bad, bit more in depth than 40k, but its only really adding and subtracting 1's and 2's and each weapon hits on 2d6,then an alocation roll to see which area hit. no armour/cover saves, no damage roll, just on to the next weapon system.... the data sheets are a bit complicated looking but once you get used to them it all moves pretty quickly....

The model range isn't all that different, FASA never owned the rights to the "unseen" mechs from Robotech and lost a lawsuit, hence they had to withdraw a lot of original designs. They kinda replaced those with the TRO Phoenix stuff which mostly look vaguely similar to the originals, if you squint when you look at em...

I myself have Draconis Combine: Fifth Sword of Light, some Davion's (Fox's Teeth), Marian Hegemony: Legio I Victix, Generic Urban Camo Mercs 'Bloody Cross' and currently working on a star of Jade Falcon from the Gamma Galaxy.

The Dracs, Marians and Falcons are by far my fav factions.
I've only recently gotten into the game decently though I've been a fluff fan for a while.

Pre and during Clan Invasion has always been my fav era to read about and play in.

They kinda replaced those with the TRO Phoenix stuff which mostly look vaguely similar to the originals, if you squint when you look at em...

Actually... FASA owned the rights through one of the three companies that made the Robotech Series, Harmony Gold owned the rights through a separate one of those three companies. FASA took playmates to court after they started making the Robotech line of toys, Harmony Gold countersued. The case was settled out of court, not lost. Part of the Agreement was that FASA would not use the Robotech line going forward.

Now the reason I bring this up: Harmony Gold got their exclusive worldwide (outside of Japan) license from a company called Tatsunoko. Tatsunko and the company that designed the mechs called Studio Nue, have been having legal battles in Japan over exactly who owns what for rights to Robotech. Tatsunoko (in Japan, and hence Harmony Gold outside of Japan) has the exclusive right to distribute and merchandise the Macross show that’s been made already and all elements within it; Big West and Studio Nue have the exclusive right to make new derivative works based on those elements. Studio Nue has worked with FASA before. Smith and Tinker (the company working on Mechwarrior 5) is led by Jordan Weissman, co-founder of FASA. The Mechwarrior 5 trailer clearly shows a Warhammer.

Long story short, those designs may in the not too distant future be returning to the official Battletech universe.

On topic. Your mechs are great. I'll try to get some pics of mine over the weekend and put them up too. Maybe some of the guys down at the shops mechs too.

It is actually incredibly simple to play the basic game (although I hear it gets more complicated). The most math intensive part is building a custom mech.

Seeing these great paint jobs (love that Sagittaire, was always one of my favorites) makes me want to paint up that Dire Wolf (Daishi) that I bought on a whim years ago.

The game becomes less fun the more custom mechs you use. Pick a faction, use mechs specific to that faction. Also use the optional unit specific special rules. The combination of these two things keeps Battletech much more flavorful.

While I personally agree with you 100%, I think its down to personal preference, really.

I know a lot of people who think that the 'Mech customization rules are their favorite part of the game. I myself always preferred to run only "official" 'Mechs and in accordance with the cannon factions. It can be a bit hard to mix the two play styles, however, as many if not most of the offical 'Mechs have some significant flaws in their designs, which can make them somewhat less competative against über-optimized custom designs which ignore the setting.

Great mechs both of you, I too stated my table top gaming career with Battletech. My poor mother didn't know what she started when she brought home Bloodname from the library. My dad and I became interested and found the starter box when we went to the aptly named Sci-Fi World store looking for more books (we found the rest of the Jade Phoenix trilogy too). The first model I ever painted was a Hellbringer.

Nice work and I'd love to see more!

Whenever someone would want to build a custom mech, we would always impose a credit limit. It is a lot harder to build das ubermech with only 10K creds.

29-10-2010, 00:21
When we used to play battle tech we tended to use official mechs, but over the course of our campaign (set during the clan invasion) we allowed the inner sphere guys to start to salvage and perform limited customisation of mechs.

Occasionally we did have games where we set credit limits and then designed the mechs to that limit, had some interesting mechs turn up, including one that alpha striked and promptly melt down due to a severe shortage of heatsinks.

Love this thread, I might have to dig out my old figures and have another crack at them.

Cry of the Wind
29-10-2010, 01:04
Haha I remember building a mech with a heat sink deficiency in Mechwarrior 3. Fire all the lasers (can't remember what kind anymore) and the mech would shut down, override with coolant flush then fire a couple more shots, do an alpha strike before cool down and BOOM! Good times.

Cry of the Wind
29-10-2010, 05:24
And just for giggles here is a picture of that first model. I was 7 years old at the time of painting. I had a bit of help and lots of coaching.

99617

Funny thing with all my Battletech stuff is that almost no mech has a similar paint scheme. My dad told me at the time "why make them all look the same, its more interesting if you try different colours". Of course I listened to him instead of making my arctic Ghost Bear Trinary but hey, I did get to play with more colours that way.
