Ah, Chaos and the glory of music.

No Heavy, Trash, Death or other- Metal

No... some other music is needed, most certainly needed.

The works of Orff have some absolutely awesome music as well, and not only the typical O Fortuna (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrtjV8xHEgY). These two for instance, excellently portraying either aspects of chaos or the fall to chaos (In Taberna turns from joyful to madness, just listen to it)

Orcs and Goblins listen to a mix of Iggy Pop, the New York Dolls, and the Dictators. 1970's proto-punk is the soundtrack of a green Waaagh pillaging your village.

Why you ask?

This is why.

"If I don't terrorize, I'm not Pop." - Iggy Pop

"Well, I don't use the toilet much to pee in. I almost always pee in the yard or the garden, because I like to pee on my estate." -Iggy Pop

"What I do on stage has utterly no purpose." - you guessed it

These quotes do not simply hint at the brilliance of one of America's greatest living contributions to world culture, but also that Mr. Pop possesses the same general worldview of the typical anarchic, manic, and socially-dysfuntional Night Goblin.

And this should be the Greenskin anthem!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuM8EqL7g98

Whenever a Doom Diver is fired, this should be played. At 11, of course!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Y8-CBXfzhE

I agree that Orcs would be very much into early punk. I think the first concept of Orcs was probably made after watching a bunch of drunk lads in steel toecaps bouncing and windmilling into each other. Though possibly they might not pick an artist who stars in his own car insurance adverts :)

Wood Elves I feel would go for the kind of acoustic, artsy conceptual stuff, such as about 50% of Bright Eyes' output (I realise putting actual band names down is fairly irrelevant, as 95% of viewers won't know who anyone is, so I shall avoid it) - but with occasional patches of violent, discordiant hell-screaming.

Chaos Dwarfs would be into full on thrash metal - no breakdown, no recognisable lyrics, just constant and pumped loud enough into their helmets to be heard over the forge.

Nurgle-affiliates would be all over slow, dirge-like doom metal.

So if anything It'd work for armies with trolls in them. If you meant with it being a beer song then yeah.

yea, it could work for O&G as well, I would just assume that most people that don't listen to music with these type of singing would be the equivelant of the dwarven banner, the one that has something to do with the dwarves speaking gibberish or whatnot :p

I'm sure the Orcs would understand the need to get paid.

Speaking of which, I think Dogs of War of all stripes could appreciate this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E07uB_QT31A

"Got my mind on my money, and my money on my mind."

Bright Eyes would seem to appeal to the Wood Elves' particular sensibilities, although I've always suspected that the fairy folk would also enjoy either Goldfrapp or early Roxy Music; anything "cooler than thou" really. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Chaos Dwarfs would definately be fans of Parliament Funkadelic. I just get the impression that they are funky as hell.

j-pop... no.

just no.

vampires hit up the impossibly appropriate death metal.

look up the lyrics for "what a horrible night to have a curse" by the black dahlia murder,

or listen to the epic brutality of "like carrion birds" by abigail williams.

i'm always a fan of disfiguring the goddess for them as well.

orcs obviously listen to punk and hardcore.

i mean real hardcore, along the likes of have heart and verse.

daemons and warriors of chaos i picture being more of the grind type.

rotten sound, malodorous, skinless etc.

and dwarves obviously listen to falsetto-ridden power metal.

duh.

Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin will always be the best for marauder hordes.

A great "entrance" tune for an elector count and his retinues: Gypsy Dance Number Six by Dvorac

Well, if I ever had gold plate mail and a barded charger whenever I made a grand entrance into any celebration (wedding? battle? (same thing)), that's what I'd want.

Whenever you're playing against a power gamer, during the deployment phase you gotta play "I Don't Like You" by the Coal Bin Bros.

Vampire counts= The Nekromantics or another suitable phsycobilly band.

Eastern empire and Kislev = Gogol Bordello

Dwarves= The Dropkick Murphy's

Dark elves= Nine inch nails

High elves= John Denver ( I don't know why, it just poped into my head)

Stirland= Charlie Daniels

Wood Elves= The Pougues

Bretonnia= Babylon Circus

Orcs and Goblins= Any of thosed lame ass metal bands that people listened to in Highschool (i.e Static x, Slipnot, Godsmack and the such)

Tomb Kings= they listen to mimes... Why? you may ask.. because they understand the language of silence.

Beasts of Chaos= Ramstein

Deamons of Chaos= Ozzy?? all I could think of.

Lizzardmen= Mariachi

Warriors of chaos/ Ogre kingdoms= Music with big Samoan guys chanting and hitting
drums.

Skaven= Well them being the lamest race in the Warhammer world , I supose that they would liusten to the lamest music, So I would say that any hip-hop/rap artist belongs in this category..... Though my opinion might change once the new skaven book comes out.

Compiled a few more songs, this time, about the different chaos gods.

And no, the gods does NOT equal "RAAAR!"

This is the fall to Slaanesh to me, it starts out big and glorious and gets more and more deranged the more it continues on, I reckommend listening to them in order, couldn't find the english translated lyric text though.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=au8h7rPEDk0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ARLlQajkXs

And a slightly more modern piece, although cliché, I feel this REALLY fits for Slaanesh, big, bombastic, huge choir that isn't always in tune... really.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7wJ8pE2qKU

As for Tzeentch, I always feel Erhu is THE instrument to use, and I mean really THE.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejnrt0s5ZTY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiOgOQcWGsc&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6V9JinlbpHw&feature=related

and to add some with a bit more modern influence as well. Do listen, even if it is an animé, there are no vocals or anything, this is just pure wonderful music.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGcz3fbW-dw

As for Nurgle, it should be, I don't really know... Slaanesh and Nurgle intermingle for me, but something long, drawn, stagnant that still leave a taste of madness and despair. Otherwise, something soft and beautiful that makes you want to stay time, something that never should end, there should be love in it as well, he is indeed, the hardest one to pick for.

.... YES, took me half an hour of youtubing untill I stumbled upon Nox Arcana and their music, composers of classical music doing it in a Gothic fasion, perfect for nurgle

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0LDtwAaJBo&feature=related

and this last one, probably the best one at that
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHM0xcJtT0o&feature=related

Note that they use the same intro for all of their songs so far, but with slightly different instruments or slight variations, nice touch.

For Khorne, I think we should have something violent and something arousing, that really throws you into the mood for battle.

Otherwise, the very big and strong classical pieces work decently

Especially thisone if you do listen onto the second part as well

But it is difficult finding proper classical/non-metal pieces expressing teh agression most people associate with Khorne, I chose the durms because they also represent the martial part, the merciless and ongoing part of Khorne. Khorne is not Vor, the Big Red Angry God of Kobolds, he is Khorne, lord of War, father of Rage, king of Skulls and birther of all things martial.

Anyhow, that's a rather... erm... short, compilation of alternate music for the gods rather than random bouts of various types of metal.

From how many people wear their music tastes on their sleeves, they certainly seem to think that there is "cool" and "un-cool" music.

What's so bad about telling other people what kind of music do you enjoy?
Or are you referring to the " 90% of people listen to a music style I don't like. If you are part of the 10% who listen to real music..." signatures?
I think sharing with others your musical likes while respecting the other people ones isn't open to cryticism.

Why random? Aren't they as respectable as your "classical or nothing" elitist post?
I also like symphonic music for atmosphere on most of my games( Nox Arcana is one of my preferred bands for that), but there are moments when you need something to pump you up, and metal is what works for me on that. There is a place for both in Warhammer games( IMHO)

In the end, it all comes down to preferences.

Now, I like to listen to Mortal Kombat before a match, to clear my mind after having the LotR OST going on in the background. Those hobbits should know where they can get off.

Well my VCs march to war listening to a variety of things either:
Foo Fighters - The Pretender
G Tom Mac - Cry Little Sister (The Lost Boys)
or a bit of My Chemical Romance particularly The Sharpest Lives as a verse goes 'A light to burn all the empires so bright the sun is ashamed to rise and be in love with all these vampires' I just picture a city of the empire in flames due to a massive undead horde lead by Mannfred von Carstein

To me, Metal has never fit into a fantasy setting, fantasy fits into metal, but not the other way around, that is MY opinnion. As such, I find that a lot of songs people post are posted solely because they are metal. You have to remember that this poll is about personal opinnion, and I do like metal, I just think metal shouldn't be accompanying fantasy armies marching to war, but fantasy armies marching to war can accompany several forms of metal with little effort.

Fair enough. I think picking a random metal song and playing it on a game doesn't work. Choosing one with lyrics/general feel fitting with your army's theme does.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand it. If a metal song can be themed on fantasy, why wouldn't that fantasy-themed song fit on fantasy games?

Electric guitars with ironclad warriors playing it works, because the warriors are the ones accompanying the music.

Throwing electric guitars into a fantasy setting doesn't mesh well in my eyes.

"The dancers moved perfectly against one another, their coreography meshing wonderfully with the heavy beating of the drums and the empowering riffs of the first guitar. The singer took the microphone and his tenor voice rung across the sea of people listening before him, envisaging themselves enthralled in a fantastical world where heroes and dragons walked the earth."

vs.

"The ground had turned into a slippery mud of spillt guts and blood, and the air reeked of bitter gunpowder and scorched flesh. The iron clad warriors of the dark north heaving their axes and maces and swords, slaughtering the few stalwart men that dared stand against them, and in the midst of them, the warriors pulled a large stage where one man hollered and howled with a guttural voice whilst strange guitars infused by daemonic energies screamed their powerful metal riffs."

Sure, they wont be carrying a symphonical orchestra with them either, but wardrums can work then and there. Basically, it might be the cinemaniac in me, but I like the imagery of fantasy battles accompanied by classical or at least classically inspired scores, be they eastern or western.

Electric Guitars with a music video of fantasy armies? Yes.
Lord of the Rings with metal soundtrack? In my opionnion, no.

I'm kind of with Neknoh on this one. Metal music, irrespective of my personal taste just doesn't fit. Drawing on the setting we're attempting to set music to should be a priority, and since it's a fantasy setting, we should be looking at music drawn from that time period. On Earth, that's Classical, but with an electronic/repetative or overblown touch to represent war.

I'll have a go at this, since I'm bored and I've got thirty minutes off between 500 words on my assignment:

The Empire: since this is based on middle Europe/Germany with a hint of Russia, it felt prudent to go classical and Rachmaninov stuck out, Opus No.3 for an after battle scene, dead bodies everywhere, Warrior Priests striding through the flames blessing the dead.

Rach 3 is worthy of note too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LY4kojG0tQk

Then the obvious one came to mind, Hell March from Command and Conquer 3, suitably heavy and metal I know, but it's very Soviet/German. The chants obviously are hordes of fanatics running over the battlefield!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nFKPVfDrgU

Lizardmen: A tricky one, especially if you want to avoid cliches. So, after some digging I picked out a slightly world music influenced trip/hop guitar track by a Dredj, whose motif is the symbol for a Chameleon, and is very suitable for battle music for Lizardmen.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUWf8ZVuU5E

Thievery Corporation could be a good source of inspiration, heavy cultural music with deep beats, although I could only recommend Sun Moon and Stars off the top of my head:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpVJznODHwQ&feature=related

High Elves: There are so many cliched ways to go with this...but, I think something more modern would work, instead of tinkering strings and cliched jabs at sexual promiscuity, so, let's throw these out there - big choral highs and erratic sympthanies seem to be high elves, although they're Order, they're still tensely wound individuals, so here's something you may have seen before to kick us off:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJB5Rqc1m0Y&feature=related

Even when it kicks off it oddly still works, swinging Swordmasters and fiery Phoenix Guard at the heart of the melee.

My second recommendation for High Elf music has to be:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vl5McGN2L-E

This track is epic in it's own right, but I think it conjures both the dragon riders flying through the sky, the last charge of Dragon Princes, the twilight hours of battle, the contemplative nature of Mages casting spells across dying kin, or the keel of a long white ship marching upon Naggaroth.

Dark Elves: Trying to get a contrast to the High Elf selections was difficult, but flicking through any of the following could work, depending on the army and mood etc:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MD7dsz0afFA (Fitting theme.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbeGTgt0RWQ (This is more a Khainite Bloodbath.)

Orcs and Goblins/Dwarves/Ogres:

A combination of Gustav Holts Planets and Danny Elfman works for any of these 3 armies, Mars especially, for Dwarves and Greenskins.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0bcRCCg01I

Wood Elves:

Grand and alarming, silent stalkers and forest spirit hosts and treeman titans, it has to be Dvorak's 9th (I'm glad I paid attention in school!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vlci-kCEaKE&NR=1

Anything by Dead Can Dance works too.

I wrote a lenghty post about why I like to combine Nox Arcana like soundtracks with teh odd metal theme for the adrenaline rush=>morale boost, but my mouse attacked again to erase it.

So I will simply say I understand your opinion, as I hope you understand mine. I picture games as a movie with a soundtrack, and the soundtrack doesn't need to be "historically accurate" because there is no need of a real Rennaissance band playing hidden behind some bush on the battlefield ^^

And I bear a personal hatred toward the big orchestral Requiem, I much preffer thisone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmijKjosplM&feature=related or rather, one that is even thinner than that, but couldn't find it, so it'll have to do.

Also, Kurosawa (IIRC), made a movie or a short where he used only wooden sounds, pretty darn creepy at that, but my guess is that THAT would be the ultimate sound for wood elves. Knives slashing through wood, clattering, ripping etc. only sounds produced from wood but in so many different ways

I used this song when I borrowed my brothers VC army once. My friend actually was a little startled by the ambient tunes, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q79VKiulRcI Lustmord - Black Star

During the most epic battle with my general I had to play the "Dracula Theme" I love that song, haha :p. A friend of mine playing VC always use that theme song.

That would freak the crap out of your opponent if you were blasting Japanese flutes out of a hidden stereo everytime he declared a charge at your dryads.

Good call on the Imperial Guard, that is one of the types of music they would listen to I reckon, a kind of "let's get happy here lads!"

Otherwise, the russian red army choir is probably one of the better ones when it comes to Guard Music I think.

as long as the metal is good metal, chances are it'll accompany the gratuitous amounts of gore and viscera represented by the dice you're rolling.

metal is brutal.

warhammer is brutal.

that doesn't necessarily mean metal is the only thing that goes with warhammer.

I've never understood why people associate contemporary music, like Metal or hard rock, with Warhammer Fantasy. 40k, perhaps understandable, but the correct music for fantasy is something orchestral and big, not guitars and screaming.

Well, chaos=death-speed metal quite likely.
Orcs love modern pop music, sorry i am unable to differentiate much.
I think no DE sorceress ever goes to war without singing the "night queen" aria from Mozart's "the Magic Flute".
Other DE probably listen to Wagner, and "dies ira" from carmina burana.
Skaven...well i dont know, i'd say the artist formerly known as Prince.
He's always been somewhat "ratty" in my opinion.
High Elves just play Elton John (spelling?)
Dwarves probably love techno-industrial (does it still exist?).
Bretonnians obviously think Beyonce is the Lady of the Lake.
Empire...well Falco, or Rammstein for the hardend veterans with bloody temper.
Wood elves.. i'd say Poison , Motley Crue and Europe. That's based on the look more than anything else.
Am i missing anyone? Yup, it's definitely Fatboy Slim for Beasts of Chaos and
some fat rapper for ogres.
Oops, forgot the undead!
Ok, anything involving an organ for VCs and walk like an egyptian for tomb kings.
