View Full Version : What ‘Official’ Codex Is Best Suited For An All Kroot Army?

I’m fed up with shooty armies such as my Guard and Necrons and I’m now looking for an army that focuses on close quarters instead of avoiding it.

But like all my armies I love the challenge of converting a entire army to give it a truly unique look, so I’ve chosen to build an army based purely on a Kroot theme.

Now I posted up a thread about representing Kroot with Deamons a while ago, but I got a lot of negative replies so the question now is what Codex do you believe I should use for a Kroot Army?
I know all about the ‘Chapter Approved’ list however it is not legal at tournaments which is where all my armies end up so I’d rather select a Codex and convert the models to match up with the unit they represent. (Which I’ve always been good at)

These are the Codexes I’m considering so far.

Orks
The Orks have low armour and are quite numerous which is very good for representing the Kroot, most of the ork tech can be converted into the Kroot theme such as storm boyz being winged Kroot and bikers being Kroot riders.

Tyranids
Not my favourite choice but Kroot do evolve based of what they eat so it is possible. A Kroot can easily be represented by a Termagant with a Broodlord and warriors representing shapers. Maybe have the larger Kroot beasts representing Carnifexes and Kroot Psykers as Zoalthropes.

Deamons
An elite Kroot Kindred that possesses superior speed and stealth skills. With Inv saves and deep strike representing their ability to dodge (like assassins) and setup an ambush. All of the Kroot beasts can be easily be played as one of the deamon units available in the codex.

So which army do you think would be best for a Kroot Theme?

you could just get the IA3: the taros campiegn. It has a full (legal) kroot mercenerys list.

I agree. Makes sense to use the official rules, or you could find the PDF unofficial version.

The only issue with using IA3 or the Chapter Approved is that he can't use the army an any major tournament and most local tournaments.

Personally I vote for Orks, simply because kroot can adapt and create new things, so they are bound to have an orky look to them due to lack of materials and pillaging.

However, I was in the same boat as you and though you don't like using a shooting army, just using regular tau could be the way to go and you can do some awesome conversion work with it as well.

Below are some of my army pics

I'd probably say Orks, but I'm not sure what you could use as an analog for Hounds and Krootox.

I love the "broadside."

Really, the kroot are so different from any other army that you would have to stretch them a lot to fit any.

Orks are probably the best fit from a looting POV and you can get them to be mainly assault.

Nids have the problem of synapse control

Demons I do not know enough about. They actually might be a better choice than orks.

Thanks, though it still isn't quite done yet.

If he wanted "packs" of Hounds, he could run them as Gretchin. :)

And a Krootox could easily be a Killer Kan, or even a War Buggy.

Yeah, Orks could work. They got my vote.

Sure enough, the first couple of replies are as if they only read the threads title :)

I'm thinking Orks, so long as you don't go too crazy on things like mega armoured nobs. I really can't see kroot being all that strong, unless you convert the basic kroot body shape.

The guard list, with hardened fighters (or is it hardened veterans?) and warrior weapons could have been useful, along with maybe jungle fighters traits. Sadly, I've not heard that an upgrade to WS and close combat weapons will make it to the new list.

I like Stillfrosty's idea of using the Tau list. Max out on kroot, convert some sniper looking ones for pulse rifle armed fire warriors and find uses for the rest of the list. Short ranged weapons would be characterful. I like the sound of using winged kroot as vespid steel wings... one day I might :)

I say either the Tau codex or IA3.

Why not Dark Eldar? You could convert some Knarloc Howda's to be Raiders, their low pts cost and weapons are broadly similar and Winged Kroot = Hellions, Winged Snipers = Scourges, Tracker Kroot = Mandrakes and Talos = Great Knarloc. Haemonculi could easily be Shapers (with poisened attacks) and a Lord would make a good master shaper.

Tyranids. They have monsters, a great variety in troops and elites and reasonable shooting, plus their statlines can look very similar (beiggest difference being Ld). Orks have vehicles which Kroot don't have, no shooting skill, very different stat lines and a lot of random stuff which doesn't fit kroot.

Seconded. Kroot are unarmoured but fast. Add jetbike=Knarloc Riders and perhaps something like Jabba's desert skiffs (with added Kroot trophies) as Raiders.

Outside tournaments there is this fan-made 4th edition extension of the original Kroot mercenary list:

Guess you are aware of the Kroot Apocalypse data sheet for such games.

Orks are the only ones as open minded .But they had enslaved the kroot long ago so relationship should be tense so i'll go with eldar.

I would say Daemons could work, as could Orks, Tau, or Tyranid.

Id personally use a Tau list, Orks are close but still fairly different.

Tau or IA3.

I like the idea of using the dark eldar list too, something that wouldn't have normally occured to me.

I voted Daemons, but then I read about DEldar, and that's just to perfect.

What about the actual Kroot list? Oh yeah, that's right you can't use it at your "Gwand Tornimint" which actually has no bearing on any games ones plays at a shop or a club.... :eyebrows:

Sure is fun when people refuse to play you on the grounds that your army isn't listed in any bookdex ...

I know there are some rules for Human Mercs, but this is the first I've heard of IA3 having a Kroot list ANYWHERE... are you sure?

I've held back buying it because the only thing I need it for is Sensor Towers. If it has a full Kroot army list, I'll pick it up.

Actually, there is NO Kroot Mercenary list in "IA3:Taros Campaign" (except for Epic). You get official rules for Great Knarlocs and Knarloc riders which is an important addition, but far from a complete and balanced list.

I think maybe Eldar, they have the right kind of balance between good skills and equipment and low toughness and armour. Gaurdians would be ok to do squads of normal kroot with the Krootox acting as the support weapon, Pathfinders would be great for kroot evolved with better shooting, swooping hawks for vulture kin, maybe banshees or harlequins as some sort of close combat specialist, and wraithlords and warwalkers for the different Knarlocs. Makes sense to me anyway :)
You could also do krootox as Wraithgaurd but the gun would need doing over.
The hardest bit is the HQ, maybe a cheap farseer as a Shaper and just really tone down the pshycic powers?

I think you should just wait for the new odex: Imperial Guard and see how useable that is.

Also, I think Codex: Eldar or Dark Eldar could be useable.

The important thing here is that unlike Orks, humans and space elfs are both toughness 3.
