My friends and I are looking to get into 40k. I'm going to buy the starter set and sell the Orks to one friend and the SM to another. Meanwhile, I will be building an Eldar army to fight them.

I don't have an Ork or SM codex, but about how many points does each side have? I'm guessing around 500 points, but I don't know much about 40k. I just want to know how many points of Eldar to initially buy.

Thanks for any answers. <3

I did the math and the ork force comes in at ~400-450 pts and the sm force is about 550-600. niether are truly legal armies as they are intended to only have 1 troop choice when you need atleast 2

maybe you and your friends should look at 750pt armies to start with to balance it out. That would probably be for your eldar around 100-150USD depending on were you buy from.

hope this helps!

Awesome, thanks.

Yeah I'll ask them to see if they'd be willing to buy an extra unit or 2 to get it to 750... I don't really care if they don't have 2 troop choices at 500 though, we'll just be getting a feel for the rules.

Thanks again for the quick answer.

If you can find the rules for Combat Patrol, that's a fun way to play small games in 40k.

The orcs are about 450 points and the space marines are about 550

If you add three more of the Deathcoptas, the Orks match the Marines pointwise.

They're both 600 pts bang on if you give the orks 4+ armour.

Buy two AoBR sets, get double the *extras* and pick up 750-1000pt of your army (in this case Eldar). :) Best value for the bucks. :)

Then they can boost their forces with whatever they think is lacking. :)

For Orks Im getting 450ish points but thats only if you foolishly foolishly assume none of your Orks are wearing armor. :D

If you give your Warboss eavy armor and a Cybork body (for invulnerable saves) and your nobs eavy armor then thats 40 more points straight away.

You could also give your boyz eavy armor but honestly it doesnt look like they have eavy armor so that would be pushing it a bit.

Technically you can make a legal army with the AOBR box Orks. Those 20 boys you get can be divided into 2 minimum sized squads or better yet the Warboss allows those 5 Nobz to count as troops.

According to the book the Space Marine Taskforce = 585 points, and the Ork Warband = 450 points, page 14. I haven't added it up myself but I think that is just basic wysiwyg. You can change the points totals with optional wargear.

Assault on Black Reach is a good kit for starting. You will find it better if everybody has their own rulebook to read though. You can get the AoBR mini rulebooks on ebay really cheap. It's better than paying $50 for a hardback or getting stuck with minis you don't want/need.

The Ork army is perfectly legal. With the Boss in the army, the Nobs are a Troop choice.

Equally, the marines can be 2 tactical squads of 5 men. Just pretend they all have bolters ;)
