Ok, a couple of things.

Whats on the stegadon: 4 crew, 1x hero.

A: How does the cannonball work if it hits the stegadon? I presume you randomise just like a ridden monster, but what happens when it hits the crew (5-6)

B: If it hits the crew, how many do you hit?

C: What must you roll to hit the hero? (does it require 2x randomisation?)

A&C. Randomize just like any other hit on a Stegadon. The specific randomization scheme for stegadons is included in their own special rules, right down to how it works for the character.

B. The crew do not have ranks, so only one is hit.

For randomizing I think it's 1-3 beastie, 4-5 crew, and 6 hero.

almost.

1-4 is beastie, 5 is crew, 6 is hero (if present)

Wow, 1/6 chance to knock a hero off of a Stegadon? I would have thought it would be harder than that.

After that you could still fail to wound it, or do only 1 wound out of a d3, and if an engine is nearby it could be saved on a 5+.

All valid points. I guess it just surprised me more than it should have.

I guess it's the same chances of knocking a hero off a chariot.

Actually, is it? What are the rules for firing at character-mounted chariots?

1-5 hits chariot, 6 hits character. Same as steg, with room made for crew.

Steggies appear to have been modeled much more after chariots than monsters -- they're more "monster chariots" than "chariot monsters," IMO. Not that I'm complaining *grin*.

A look at the LM army book gives you all the rules, which is nice :) Certainly the "howdah" is chariot like in protection - in fact even better than a chariot in that respect, as not many chariots offer a 2+ AS.

Makes up for T2 riders i guess....

Actually, I thought (judging from the Skaven FAQ about a BT hitting a Screaming Bell in unit) that a cannon ball hits both the mount AND its rider. I would play this as hit the mount, the skink and one of the crew. I'm willing to say otherwise, but this is just how I'd do it by other FAQs. GW is not known for consistancy, however.

You hit one crew, one character or one monster (you've only caused one 'hit' on the model & its randomised)

Have a look at p. 87- Firing a cannon, this deals with exactly the situation being discussed.

You hit one "component", based on a random roll.

it's particularly 'fun' when it's turn one, and the engine's priest gets picked off before he's even turned the thing on...

can the engine not be activated without a priest?

Sadly not. several hundred points of fail that game...

Hide it for the first turn if you think its going to be an issue, that's what I do with my big creatures. Of course hiding it is going to hamper your tactics if you want it somewhere else so you'll have to gamble that it survives if you want to maximise its usefulness.

Should have bought the charm of itzl, my priest never leaves home to fight cannons without it.

Thanks for all the replies guys, glad to know the cannon can only kill one guy! (even if it might be the steg :/)

It's stone throwers you have to watch out for. If the Engine is hit by a Stone Thrower, then first you randomise to see which bit is "under the hole" (suffering S8 hit D6 wounds), then you do partials on all the crew and the rider, who each may suffer S4 D6 wounds no armour hits. Lethal!

Needing a 6 to hit the skink characters is exactly the same odds as the character in a unit that got magically aimed at with a cannon ball failing to hear the magic 'look out, sir' being yelled in his ear.

I don't there's any way to protect characters better than that while staying within LOS of a cannon.

Btw, I just find it wrong that apparently every 6th cannon ball hits the most experienced guy in the unit.
