View Full Version : Poll: Where do you do most of your tabletop gaming?

10-03-2009, 19:14
I'm just now getting back into tabletop gaming, last time I played was in third edition 40k. Looking back I mainly played at friend's houses (most of the time garages as we were teens back then), maybe something like 75 percent of my total gaming was done that way with the remaining 25 at our FLGS.

Nowadays I'm getting my little bro into the 5th edition and he seems hesitant of checking out the LGS (I'm basically going to drag him along after we get accustomed to the rules since he'll probably enjoy it) but I foresee most of my tabletop gaming happening outside of stores and inside homes because its just more chill, easier, etc.

To the Warseer mods: Sorry about the first topic, my browser and I screwed up the polling feature.

None of the above... I do most of my gaming in MY home!

Mostly Mordheim, D&D, and boardgames.

10-03-2009, 19:22
Whoops, consider the second option to be any kind of personal home :chrome:

10-03-2009, 19:24
Done. (I'm winning!).

10-03-2009, 19:43
I play at my place or at friends homes exclusively (well I played once at the FLGS). I just find it more practical and fun. You can play whenever you want, you can bring beer, there's nobody interfering with your game, it's more relaxed, you don't feel like you have to buy something and best of all you are amongst friends and it's much easier to have a multiplayer game on a big enough surface. I have 7 friends who play the game, so I certainly don't have to play against the same army all the time, most of us even have more than one army.

Currently I go to a GW store (biggest in continental europe IIRC), but as soon the spring comes back I will finish my own tabletop (too cold to play in the garage for now ^^)

FLGS is nice to find new players, but it is open mostly during work hours... (he ! money for all this stuff must come from somewhere -_-)

I tend to either play at my place or my mate's place. I prefer the more relaxed environment and I can have a thew beer's too.

My FLGS has games nights twice a week, but i only game there once a month at the most, can get to crowded and recently a few annoying 40k kids have discovered it ruining the average age of late 20's of the locals >_<

Iv been doing most of my gaming either round my house or a mates house, where a group of us have a Warhammer Campaign on the go as well as abit of Necromunda/ Blood Bowl and the ocasional 40k game, the Warhammer Realm of Battle board i bought has really been useful :)

Exclusively at either my place or other Group's homes.
Same reasons as others...friendly atmosphere, zero chance of running into ********* and/or ruining the game by having inane nonsensical rules-lawyering arguments.
Plenty of Refreshments and general Banter going on. Been able to leave minis on the Boards mid-game is a huge plus for us, so an Apoc game can be played over a few weekends.

Never been to a Tourney and have no interest in doing so.

It really depends on the FLGS. I've been to FLGS before that were brutal, poor terrain, unpainted army, and jerks either in or running the store. Now I play at a fantastic one here in Vancouver (Strategies games and hobbies) with great terrain, good management, and good people.

It really depends on where you are and what the local scene is like. Some FLGS are fantastic and improve the hobby imo, others are downright brutal and lessen my interest in the hobby.

I think a lot of it has to do with age as well. When I was younger, I'd have games every weekend, sometimes multiple games at friend's houses or my own. Now that I have more responsibilities and can only get a game in once or twice a month, going down to the store is the best bet because I'm pretty much guaranteed to find a game on a game day, and it requires little if any planning.

10-03-2009, 23:42
I think you would have to be mad to play at in store...most of them don't have a lot of space, most of them set time limits and most of them have a lot of background noise...

My group play at my place or at tournaments.

10-03-2009, 23:49
the problem is if you don't have any friends that play, then you have to play at a store. that's my situation.

11-03-2009, 10:18
None of the above. Gaming club. They still have those.

11-03-2009, 10:27
Again, gaming club.

11-03-2009, 10:32
No option for 'My home' but a good number of select friends descend on my house every Thursday to play games and have a laugh. Mostly specialist games but the occasional 40k and possibly Fantasy in the future, time permitting.

Gives us the freedom to play what we want, when we want to.

11-03-2009, 10:41
At home. Don't like tournaments. Don't like my gamer-fug-permeated, teenage-infested local stores. And I've got easy access to my fridge!

11-03-2009, 13:38
Never been to a tournament and never played in a store.

A gaming club, can't believe thats not an option!

A gaming club, can't believe thats not an option!

Don't gaming clubs mainly play in people's homes?

No, who would call playing at a mates house a club?

11-03-2009, 15:09
I've never been a member of a gaming club but I'm sure you guys frequent some sort of avenue whether its a FLGS, home, or tournaments more often than the other? I can't think of anywhere else one would tabletop game so feel free to help me out :chrome:

Cane: "Don't gaming clubs mainly play in people's homes?"

Not usualy, in my experience, usualy pubs function rooms, church halls, etc.

I voted tournaments since I seem to attending one about every 6 weeks now, so my gaming life feels dominated by them, although I get a game in at GW Kensington most Thursdays, might get involved in the campaign there, since all I've done since Xmas is polish tournament lists.

Been wargaming for 40 plus years. We/I started by placing books for hills, tin cans for towers, using blue cut up paper for a river....all that went onto an attic floor. We pushed/moved the minies around one at a time.

I am NOT a GW only user/gamer. There are several good sets of rules my regular opponents and I use. Different minies too.:D

These days, the GW store bugged out of the area. The couple of indies that still handle GW's stuff......might take up the slack. But then, those indies do just fine without GW only users cluttering up all their tables.

By the by.......for the first couple of years after the GW store had opened up, we did our GW rules/minies gaming at their store. 5-6 years later, it's gone. Sooo much for GW's efort to build up the hobby of GW.

Pretty much always game at my local GW (previously Doncaster, now Nottingham or WHW). Used to game a fair bit at my local gaming club as well back in Doncaster, but now my local gaming club (1st Company vets) is pretty much the same as GW store, since they meet at WHW. Food, alcohol and a massive gaming hall with fantastic terrain and a great assortment of gamers-fits the bill nicely!

20-03-2009, 22:38
You forgot something...

How about own home? I've never played outside of my own home.

20-03-2009, 23:16
No, who would call playing at a mates house a club?

I do, actually. Having a rather large spare room and kitting it out with 3x 6'4' tables turns my home into a club every Thursday night.

I play only an the gamestore. It's a lot of fun and friendship.

I mostly play at the game store, but a close second is my mates place. I don't have my gaming room set up yet, and the problem with my mates place is time. He has two small children, so dinner time (between 6 and 8) usually means no gaming. So we either have to make it before lunch, and finish before dinner, or after dinner and make it an evening session. Both of which are obviously dependant on our work timetables!

On the other hand, getting a 'leave pass' from the significant other to get down to the FLGS for a couple of hours is a bit easier.

22-03-2009, 00:45
The game club I run at Work. So none of the above. Nice big space to play and model. Currently working on 16x4 feet of Mordheim tables and scenery.

This is true! What bloomin' fun it is too!

Although soon, I'll have to do most of my gaming at GW Ipswich and at a local club there. :)

23-03-2009, 22:19
At the gaming club I attend. Tuesday evenings and all day Sunday. It's above a pub, so we get the sport on if we want and there's a decent bar :D

24-03-2009, 00:29
I do most of my gaming at my local GW but my brother and I do have a board that we play on when we can.

This thread has just reminded me that I need to finish off painting the terrain I forgot to finish :(

24-03-2009, 04:17
LGS. I quite like it as it's central, provides scenery and chance to meet new people. I can understand why some wouldn't though especially with loud apocalypse players ;)

24-03-2009, 11:47
Gaming Club (which is not listed)

24-03-2009, 15:47
Currently at my local GW. Why, because they have lots of tables (at least for our area, 7 is considered a lot of tables), if I can't pick up a game I can sit and do some hobby work, and if hungry/thirsty can hop across the square and get some wings, pizza, sandwiches, and drinks (including preferred adult beverages). Prior to GW, some 12 years ago, would play mostly at a LGS that had 4 tables (which at the time was a lot for this area) in a back room that they kept open late after the store closed.

24-03-2009, 16:50
In 11 years of playing Games Workshop games I have never played in a Store, GW or other wise. I have always played at a friend's house.

24-03-2009, 16:54
In my home. My basement exactly. Its the only place my wife let me put my stuff up :D

Several of my longtime/regular, old fart opponents have tables in their basements.

A couple of us also get in an occasional game at a couple of local indie stores. Heck, one of those stores is seeking GW rules systems players, Fantasy and or 40K.

There is also a NON-GW club. They have been doing all kinds of wargaming for 10-15 years. They normally get together about an hour or two from my place. They are big on ACW, WWII......historical wargaming.

26-03-2009, 04:19
we don't have basements in our part of Texas......water table is too high :cries: Just another reason why I play mostly at stores since I currently don't have space for a dedicated gaming table (If I could only talk the wife into converting the formal dining room into a game room, it's not like we eat in there but maybe once a year!)

26-03-2009, 13:40
Well I don't play mainstream GW anymore. So Games club for me. We meet in an old scout hut the club bought.

Frankly at university with everyone in little flats nobody I know has the money or space for GW at home. Bit of a nuisance really, we've migrated to boardgames or going to local clubs instead.

When younger we never played in GW stores though, always at a parents house. There's an important distinction there _
