I currently have several 40K armies, Dark Angels, Tau, eldar, Daemon hunters, and Imperial Guard. I'm currently in that state of how much more do i want/need to add to these armies until they could be considered finished.

Does anyone have a minimum or maximum size that an army list should be?

I am tossing around Apocalypse level 3000pts.

Minimum I'd say about 700 - 1,500 points. As for maxmim 3,000 -4,000. That's just me.

About 1000pts is a sensible minimum, and about 3000 as much as you need.

Of course, you can build some very small legal armies- ie a Fully legal IG list can be as little as 306pts, in the current book, and others can be equally small.

I agree with Bunnahabhain, 1000 points is a pretty good size to aim for with any army for certain Legues/Local Tourneys.

As far as Apoc is concerned, I think that 10,000 is the best way to go :D You can never have enough for the Apoc Games ;)

I'd say 1000pts min and 3500pts max, but then you might want more units to be able to play varied lists.

On the how small can you legally go, an ork army can be as low as 115 pts for a legal army (1 hq 2 troops)

I've played some fun games 600 to 1000 pts. I prefer 1500 +

If you use the 4th edition combat patrol restrictions. Small games of 400-500pts are really fun and can be played in an hour or less. As far as 'whats the largest for apoc games?'. I don't really feel that there is a 'largest' sized army. Its down to however many points you and your friends want to play.

:skull: I think 400-500 point armies work really well using the Combat Patrol rules like
Aegius said. As for a maximum size is there such a thing??? I hope to never be finished with my orks :skull:

For maximum:

Dark Angels - One full company (mixed) + Support, or 3 full companies (1 Deathwing, 1 Ravenwing, 1 Battle) + Support

Tau - 1 full Hunter Cadre as defined in the codex with options to flex a few of the options.

Daemon Hunters - 1 full Grey Knights Company and 1 full Inquisitor List with full conscripts options.

IG - a full Regiment should be a good start.

Of course, you could just get the maximum number of each unit type you could field in a standard FOC (i.e. for Tau: 15 Crisis Suits, 18 Stealth Suits, 72 Fire Warriors, 100 Kroot, 50 Kroot Hounds, 174 Gun Drones, 102 Shield Drones, 102 Marker Drones, 15 Pirahna, 24 Pathfinders, 9 Pathfinders with Rail Rifles, 9 Devilfish, 30 Vespid, 3 Sniper Drone Squads, 9 Broadside Suits, 3 Railgun Hammerheads, 3 Ion Cannon Hammerheads, and 3 Sky Rays {woof, did I miss anything?}), and you'd be ready for anything.

The minimum ... however much you need to have fun to play with. Can be a 400pt combat patrol or 1K list ... whatever you think is fun.

As for a maximum ... it's whenever you don't feel you need to collect any more. Apoc games being what they are, I'd say aiming for 4K is good. The good part is that Imperial Super Heavies can serve in all Imperial armies, so it's a bit less expensive.

I think 1500 should be at leas the minimum since most tournys
are 1500 points but is slowly creeping up to 1750, anyway find
out what the minimum is at your gameing store, or what point
limit is mostly played their.

Minimum 1500 pts, max how much can you afford? 20,000 pts of Marines is always fun in Apoc games...

Minimum for me is 2250 pts as that is the level my Gaming group plays at. For maximum we usually aim for a full FOC which normally comes to around the 3K-3.5K mark.

Apoc we just ally the appropriate Armylists together...so we follow the chart in the Apoc book.

Minimum - 1500 for pick up and play.

Maximum - Whatever you or your car can carry to game.

1000 for a pick up game, then as high as you want to for other stuff.

1000 gives a good enough list with some elites, fast and heavy, not just boringtroops (eldarwise anyway)

I like to think of it in terms of do all you want to do with an army before you start another one. Now, one of these days, I'll take my own advice.

I've between 4000 and 5000 points of Orks at present and I figure I'll call them done round the 7000 point mark since I'm not even really into vehicles yet.

My Witch Hunters were started with the intention of them being a smaller army (and they will be) but I'll likely call them finished around the 3500 point mark, which should be once I paint everything I want to paint.

Realistically, I'd say that you're done with an army once you've done what you want and you can play the games you want to play. If you like a taste of each army and Combat Patrol games, you can get by pretty easily with 500 point armies (and probably have room to spare). I've a friend who just makes up tournament armies at 1850 a piece. Personally, I like variety in may armies and in my painting, so I'm currently working toward 'getting things done' by modeling and painting everything I want to make and everything I want to play. It's really rather like good and evil. They're both fine choices if you have to make one.

at leawst is what ever you can afford, at max is when 50% of your income is going towards tabletop. if you spend that much then you should probably stop and get a different army. my daemons dont have a stop point value so much as im stopping at the point of me having enough models to do every chaos daemon formation, except the bloodthrister one. i dont really like them and having 8 of my least favorite Greater daemon is not in my plans

i like 1000 - 1200 for a small game. Eldar can be made as low as 190pts, autarch and 2, 5 man dire avenger squads.

LoL. You play the exact armies I play! (I also have a second chapter, but close enough.)
This might help to give you an idea of how many points I play.
Dark Angels = ~3000 pts (about 1000pts to still build)
Tau = ~4000 pts (I bought the Hunter Cadre apocalypse set when I already had a playable 2000pts.)
Eldar = Far too much. As of what I can field, ~3500pts, with another 2000+ (including a Cloudstrike Formation) to build.
Daemonhunters = ~1500... awesome army but chips far to easy. Needs to be striped, repainted a properly sealed. (If the plastic GK rumor is true it will be expanding.)
Imperial Guard = ~600... waiting for new stuff to come out.

Unless you're using the old combat patrol rules, it's hardly worth setting up a board for less than 500 pts. I think 1000 is a good size for quick afternoon's game at home, or if going out to a pick-up game in a store/ club it's also not too much to carry around. If you're planning on playing tournies, 1500 is really the standard size I think. I see some at 1250 or 1750, which I'm not a fan of.It seems an odd size, keep it in 500pt blocks. The extra 250 sounds to me like a 1k or 1500 pt game but then going "I want to take a few extra upgrades".

The last alternative is going all out Apoc. style, with 3000 at least. It's up to you though, and will also depend on what army I guess. 3000pts of marines is not as many models as 3k worth of guard. I usually go for 1000 as I'm addicted to doing lots of armies, so I can do one fairly quickly then move on to the next!

Try 500 point blocks.
500>1000>1500>2000
2000 is enough for most games and you can always ally armies together for Apoc.
To have enough to vary your army beyond 1 or 2 similar lists, around 3000 is good.

That said, I have a full company of dark angels and 50 deathwing which very rarely see use anymore and instead I am working on an exactly 1500 point Crimson Fists army.

Basically as others have stated
How much can you afford?
Are there any models you want?

Well I have a 750pt Imperial Guard Army, that's my minimum.
Whereas my Thousand Sons range well up to 5000.
Toss in Tau and Tyranids in between and there ya have it.

Though by no means do I call my Thousand Sons finished... I need a Fast Attack choice first :D

i think minimum is around 750 pts. you will be able to play a game of 1hr to 2 hrs with this amount of points

I find that the game doesn't get interesting until you hit 1500 points. At that level most armies have the ability to take a diverse force. It allows a general/commander to take the basic components that are required, along with a few toys.

3K is a good stopping point, but some armies can get to 6-7K before you can sample everything that is offered in a codex.
